Javier Baez is with the Rangers

David Bote, Willson Contreras, and Mark Zagunis are about the only ones left off the top of my head.

They signed Alex Bregman to replace Russell/Bryant a couple of seasons ago.

They also have a lot of young talent on this team though, the likes Jeimer Candelerio (SP?), Gleybar Torres, Casey Mize, Nico Hoerner, and others (sorry can't think)

They are actually really good, but a few key injuries early in the year set them back.

If we are able to hold them off I suspect they'll make it as a wildcard team and I wouldn't want to play them.

      Cardinals drop series to Diamondbacks

Cardinals lost 2 of their 3 games against the Diamondbacks over the weekend and now hold a 4 game lead over the second place Cubs.

The Cardinals appeared to bring toothpicks instead of bats to Arizona with them, as the offense sputtered to not only score runs and get hits, but just make contact. The Cardinals struck out a total of 41 times in the 3 game series. That equates to 1.5 strikeouts per inning.

The only game the Cardinals won, Saturday nights tilt, was a 3-2 win in which Jack Flaherty was masterful going 7 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 11. All 3 runs came on one hit as Nolan Gorman hit his 18th homerun of the season, a 3 run shot in the 5th after Ortiz walked and J.J. Bleday reached via an error.

The other two games, the Cardinals were just absolutely beaten down by the D'Backs. Arizona won game one 12-1 and Sunday's finale 13-0.

The Cardinals will travel to San Francisco to face the Giants in a 3 game series to start the week. The Giants currently hold the best record in the National League. Michael Wacha, Junior Fernandez, and Kyle Funkhouser are scheduled to be the starters of the 3 game series.

Waiting until after the Trade Deadline to begin my Padres dynasty, but in the meantime, I've been playing around the Minors to get used to the prospects.

Started with Triple-A El Paso which is home to some powerhouse prospects like (#5) SP MacKenzie Gore, (#26) SS CJ Abrams, (#28) SP Luis Patino, and (#60) CF Taylor Trammell. Realistically, I'd probably have most of these guys on the Double-A squad if I were actually playing this...

We had Gore start off on the mound and he looked good against the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A team, home to (#6) RF Jo Adell. He chucked (7.0 IP - 5 H - 1 ER - 6 K - 0 BB - 1 HR), with the one long ball and ER coming from Adell. It wasn't until the latter portion of his outing that he began striking players out, but for the most part, he kept the ball from being hit hard.

The main beast was actually 2B Tucupita Marcano who ranks as the #13 player in our organization. I didn't get through all 9 innings yet, but entering the 8th, he is (3/4 - 1 2B - 1 HR - 4 RBI - 1 SB). He got caught stealing 3B after stealing 2B, but every hit he's gotten, including a line out, have been rockets.

I'll finish this game out and play some of the Double-A game which will have (#54) C Luis Campusano behind the plate, (#85) OF Robert Hassell, our first round pick from 2020, and SP Ryan Weathers, the #9 player in our organization, on the mound.

          Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Atlanta Adds to the Cubs Woes

The Cubs locked up with the Braves at Wrigley for a 3 game series. Atlanta sits in 2nd place behind the Mets but had a small lead in the 2nd wildcard spot. The Cubs were able to get out to the early 4-0 lead as they moved runners and played a bit of small ball. Brailyn Marquez pitched well as he struck out 8 but the decision to leave in him in the 8th backfired as he gave up a 2 run home run before betting pulled. In the 9th Emmanuel Clase took the mound but melted down in what has been a theme for the Cubs of late. Acuna got the Braves within 1 run with a solo shot to left. After getting an out, Joey Gallo doubled to right field was followed by a homerun by Yasiel Puig as Atlanta took their first lead of the game in the 9th. Rafael Guerra was able to get on with one out Willson Contreras could not play hero as he grounded into a game ending double play. The loss marks the 3rd loss for the Cubs in as many games and all of them coming with implosions in the bullpen.

In Game 2 the Cubs again got a solid outing by their starting pitcher as Kyle Hendricks went 7 innings giving up 3 hits and a walk and allowing one 1 to score. The Cubs went to their bullpen in the 8th leading 3-1 but it again ran into trouble as Rowan Wick got a quick out and then gave up a walk and a single. The Cubs had a short least and Kyle Ryan came to face Albies. The move was not fruitful as the infielder drove in a run to make it 3-2 Cubs. Clase started to warm up as the Cubs played the match ups by walking Acuna to have a lefty on lefty with Freeman up. Freeman was able to pull a ball to bring in the 3rd run to tie it up. Clase was able to come in to get out of the inning but the damage had been done. The Cubs went scoreless in the 9th but got a run in in the 10th Jovanny Cruz came in to try and seal the win but a 2 run shot by Acuna dashed those hopes to make it 5-4. The Cubs bats were not able to produce anything in the bottom of the 10 and the Cubs fell again their 4th in a row.
In the last game of the series, Oscar Colas took the mound on short rest and was able to go 5 and 1/3 innings but left as the cubs trailed 3-1. Duane Underwood Jr put in 2 and 2/3 innings of scoreless work as the Cubs added a run in the 6th. In the 7th Nico Hoerner drew a walk to start off the inning and Kyle Scwarber left the bench as a pinch hitter. The slugger was able to knock the cover off the ball for a 2 run home run to right. The Cubs bullpen was able to keep the lead this time and the Cubs avoided the sweep winning 4-3. With the win the Cubs officially clinched the Central and the best record in the NL; they are tied with Boston for the best record in baseball.

Cubs and Brewers set to play 4

The Cubs headed to Milwaukee for a 4 game Series. The Brewers sit at 89 wins and have been eliminated from the NL Central race but have the 2nd best record in the NL and are leading the wildcard spot; the Brew Crew can lock up a playoff spot depending on how the series with Chicago goes. Milkwaukee had played the cubs tight early in the season as the series was split at 4-4 early in the year but the Cubs have had their number since as the Cubbies have rolled off 7 straight wins against their rivals to the North. Milkwaukee’s big acquisition in July did not go as planned as Adalberto Mondesi was placed on the IL in mid August after injuring his calf. Mondesi is a free agent at the end of the year so the trade may have a high price in the long run if they do not retain the infielder after giving up 3 high end prospects.
In game 1 of the 4 game set, AJ Puk was dealing from the get go as he struck out 4 of the first 6 batters and didn’t allow a hit until the 3rd inning. The Cubs struck first in the 3rd with a solo blast by Kyle Scwarber, his 38th home run on the year. The Cubs were able to add insurance as Anthony Rizzo hit a ball to deep centerfield that scored Nico Hoerner from 3rd. in the 7th Puk was still in the game with Tim Anderson up to the plate. Anderson smacked a ball to right field but Rookie Rafael Guerra was able to make a stellar grab to save a run. Puk was able to go all the way as he got the complete game shutout, allowing 4 hits and striking out 7.

In Game 2 Freddy Peralta took on Yu Darvish. Peralta is in the running for the CY Young as he boasts a 14-6 record over 200 Ks on the year and a ERA under 2.60 Peralta struggled with command as he walked 4 but only gave up 2 hits in 6 innings of work. the Cubs were able to strike in the 3rd but that would be their only run of the day. Tim Anderson got the Brewers on the board as he took a ball to left field for a 2 run home run. The Brewers added another 2 run shot in the 6th as Darvish got ran from the game. The game went scoreless the rest of the way as the Brewers end their 8 game losing streak to the Cubs 4-1, winning their 90th on the year. The Cubs and Brewers will face off 2 more times before the Cubs head to Cincinnati for a 3 game slate.

            Mets Blast Dbacks, Sweep Series
            May 29, 2024

The Mets scored two runs in the first inning of this series thanks to a RF Braxton Davidson home run, and they didn't stop until the wheels were up in Arizona. The Mets scored a total of 33 runs on 44 hits, en route to a convincing sweep. They now hold a 6 game lead over the second place Marlins and sit at 38-22.

The Mets will get a day off and then finish the month of May/kick off June with a 3-game set against the Marlins at Citi Field. This is a big series, as the winner will gain ground in the division one way or the other.

Mets Make a Move at Catcher, Promote Fabregas

The Mets have made a move at the backstop position, promoting Eddy Fabregas to the big leagues for the first time in his career. The 27 year old has been a career minor leaguer, and has finally earned his way onto a big league club. Fabregas is hitting .313 with 6 HR, 23 RBI, and 10 steals in 147 AB down at Triple-A Syracuse. Fabregas will wear #77.

Fabregas will be replacing C Luke Wray, who was intended to be the catcher of the future in Mets' Land, but he has not lived up to the hype. Profiled as an offense-first, power-hitting catcher, Wray was supposed to be the next Mike Piazza. Unfortunately, Wray hasn't hit for power, or at all in his time in the majors - he's batting .170 with 3 HR, and 8 RBI in 88 AB. Pair that with below-average defensive player, and it's hard to find a reason to keep him on the roster, especially with Fabregas raking in the minors.

While Fabregas has been solid at the plate, the one knock on him is his defense. While he may be a slight upgrade over Wray in that area, it's nothing to write home about. He'll need to earn his way onto the team with his bat, and the chances will be frequent with aging Jonathan Lucroy manning the starting position.

The Mets' future at Catcher is wide open right now.

Cardinals take series against Giants..Cubs up next

The Cardinals took 2 of 3 against the best team in the National League, the San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals drop the series opener on Monday after they were completely dismantled, but were able to win both Tuesday and Wednesday and now lead the Central by 3 games over the Cubs. Speaking of the Cubs, they will be coming to St.Louis for a key 4 game weekend series. In fact, the Cardinals have 17 games left in the regular season, 7 of those (4 home/3 road) are against the Cubs.

Cardinals activate Yoan Moncada from IL

The Cardinals have activated Yoan Moncada from the 10 Day IL and will welcome him back into the lineup for a key series starting on Thursday against the Cubs.

Moncada is hitting .292 with 14 homeruns and 59 RBI's this year.

Chris Taylor was optioned back to Memphis to open up a roster spot.

3B Sato Optioned to Triple-A, Mets Promote Top Prospect, Durango
                May 31, 2024

The Mets have made their second roster move this week due to poor performance. 3B Walter Sato has been the utility infielder off the bench this year, but he will be optioned to Triple-A. In 101 AB he's slashing .198/.282/.327 with 3 HR and 15 RBI. His glove leaves a lot to be desired, so his lack of offense really makes it difficult keeping him on the roster.

Mets fans are excited about his replacement, though. This will be their first glimpse at #1 prospect 2B Brent Durango. The 23-year old is currently listed as the #16 prospect in baseball and is hitting .281 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, 25 R, and 9 SB down in Triple-A Syracuse. While he will never be a power hitter, he has the ability to hit for average and has great plate discipline, making him an ideal candidate for the top of the order. The Mets are hoping that Durango can slide into the 2B spot once Worley hits free agency in a couple of years. Durango will wear #17.

The Mets look to bounce back against the Marlins after a 5-2 loss in game 1 of the series.

Cubs face off against Milkwakuee for final 2 of 4 game series.

The Cubs were able to get back in the win column as Brailyn Marquez went 6 innings and struck out 7. The Cubs took a big 4th and 5th inning on the way to victory as they got 5 in the 4th to run Adrian Houser from the game and another 4 in the 5th as Schwarber added his 39th home run.

In the final game the Cubs again held the Brewers to one run as KH got his 13th win on the year going 7 and ⅔ innings and Schwarber fully entered himself into the home run race as he knocked 2 balls out of Miller park as he is now tied with Contreras with 41 home runs.

After a day off the Cubs rested their starters and lose a quick series to the Brewers 5-6 and 7-9. The Cubs returned home for a 4 game slate to end the regular season. The Cubs monitored their pitching staff throughout the series and no starter went past 5 innings and starts were out of the game by the 6th. The Cubs were able to go 4 and 1 to end the year and seem more confident in their bullpen. In the 2nd game of the series the Cubs only featured relieves as Emmanuel Clase started the game and went 2 and ⅔ innings and only allowed one hit. The Cubs were able to get Ian Hap back on the last day of the regular season and will be at full strength as the enter the post season.

Chicago finished the year at 110 and 52 but Boston had the best record as they won 111. The Braves and Dodgers had to settle the 2nd wildcard in game 163; the Dodgers prevailed in a 1-0 win as Kershaw went the distance for the shut out and struck out 11.

                  NL East - Mets 88-74

Kris Bryant lead the NL with runs with 115. Contreras just missed out as NL Home run King as Arenado hit 44 to Contreras and Schwarbers 43; but the Cubs catcher did lead baseball in slugging and captured his 3rd straight silver slugger award. The Cubs led the NL in fielding - Colas and Baez were named Gold Glove winners while Kris Bryant just missed the cut.

Wildcard Games live up to their names

The Wildcard games both came down to the final at bats as the Dodgers fell to the Brewers 4-3. The Brewers got off to a hot start and were up 3-0 after 3 innings but the Dodgers were able to get 2 on Hader on the 9th before the Brewers closed the door. Braves took 2 out of 3 from the Marlins @ Truist Park

We started off our Home opener series for 2020 on the right foot. Game 1, great pitching performance from Newcomb he went 7 IP again but got a no decision. The game went to extra innings and the red hott Acuna Jr. drove in OF Heyward from 2B on a deep 1B to CF. We won 3-2!

Marlins took game 2. SP Folty had a great, but couldn't get past the 6th inn. Bullpen didn't do him any favors either.

Game 3, Offensively got some run production from a new face. 3B Arenado went 3 for 4, HR,2B & 3 RBI. C McCann 3 for 4, 2B & RBI and also SS Pinder one long 3R HR shot to LF...SP Teheran was the benefactor of the run production, but he went 7.0IP,4ER,0BB & 12K... CP Kimbrel nailed down his 3rd SV and his 999,1,000 & 1,001 strikeout's. We won 8-5!

Padres are coming into town for a 3 game series. We looking for some payback against them.

27 games left as I follow the original MLB schedule. I've played probably 95% of the games on the actual day too going back to March/April. 8 games below .500 with the Tigers. Legend sliders.

This would be the 3rd time I've played all 162. Oddly, I never carried the other ones over. [emoji2357]

                        First-Year Player Draft Results
                        June 1, 2024

Today marked the first-year player draft, and the Mets had the 30th pick in each of the 6 rounds, as well as one compensatory pick after round 2.

This was not the best draft the Mets have had in recent years, although there are a few pieces that could be considered exciting. Overall, I'd grade their draft at a B-.

                        Round 1 - CF Fernando Cruz - 21 | 54OVR | 77POT
This is where the Mets draft took a big hit, and unfortunately it was in the first round. The Mets took a chance on a little scouted player in order to fill a need - a speedy, contact hitting position player. The Mets have 2 stolen bases on the season, both belonging to 3B Walter Sato, who just got optioned to the minors. There is little to no speed on this team, and the Mets were hoping to add a future piece that would rectify that. Unfortunately, it looks like Cruz will top out as a 4th outfielder/defensive replacement, and isn't expected to make the majors for several years.

                        Round 2 - SS Brad Skattum - 19 | 55OVR | 85POT
The Mets are happy with this pick. The SS is one of the organizational weaknesses, especially behind Richard Urena, and this pick helps to improve that position and the future outlook of the middle infield. At 6'5, Skattum is taller than most shortstops but he's got enough athleticism to play the position well defensively. He also projects as a good contact hitter, and with Urena locked in for the next 3 years at least, he's got some time to develop at the plate and improve his power.

                        Compensatory Round - SP Leo Williams - 22 | 55OVR | 88POT
A nice pickup here with their compensatory pick. Williams is a 5'11 righty, and has a Tim Lincecum comp. He's got a low-mid 90s fastball, but his breaking stuff is deadly. He'll need to improve his control and ability to limit balls in play, but he's got a 5-pitch repertoire that will keep hitters off balanced. The Mets are hoping he can progress quickly and be knocking on the door to the majors by 2027.

                        Round 3 - 2B Diego Flores - 20 | 61OVR | 75POT
Diego Flores provides MLB ready defense and speed at the middle infield positions, something the Mets are lacking. What he does not provide yet is a productive bat. Look for Flores to be a defensive utility infielder by the time he breaks into the majors.

                        Round 4 - RP Coleman Denney - 21 | 54OVR | 89POT
This was the pick of the draft for the Mets considering which round he went. Denney is a 6'5 power lefty with a high 90s fastball and a nasty slider. He's got a chance to be a deadly back of the bullpen arm for the Mets, and their hoping he can progress rather quickly as that will be a area of need after the next couple of seasons and their bullpen pieces move on. If he is in the majors by 25, the Mets will be very pleased.

                        Round 5 - SP Derek Favreau - 19 | 52OVR | 73POT
Favreau is a project piece. Being just 19 years old the Mets are in no rush to get him to the majors, and he'll have to make significant improvements before they'll give him a serious look. Chances of him making the Mets roster in the future is slim, thanks to the abundance of solid (not great) arms in the farm system, but the organization is willing to give him a chance.

                        Round 6 - CF Rick Rutherford - 22 | 67OVR | 66POT
Rutherford will provide immediate outfield depth next year, and is a speedster and has a good glove. The Mets are still weighing whether or not to extend a contract in his direction, as their outfield is loaded with talent across all 3 levels. Rutherford's advantage is his speed, something that is sorely missing from the organization.

                          Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2023

Playoff Edition of I-94 Rivalry Set for NLDS

The Divisional rounds started off with day time baseball at Wrigley as the Cubs hosted the Brewers for Game 1. Oscar Colas was on the mound for the Cubs and Milwaukee had Freddy Peralta on the bump. Colas started 24 games for the Cubs and had a lot of solid starts as shown by his 14-2 record and a WHIP under 1.10. Freddy Peralta had a dominate season for the Brewers as he came up just short for the NL Cy Young. The game was a pitching duel as both pitchers were able to stifle hitters. The Brewers got on the board first after Christian Yellich was able to get on board with a 1 out double in the 4th. Yellich attempted to steal 3rd and the throw from Contreras was over the head of Bryant allowing Yellich to score. The Cubs were able to get 3 walks out of Peralta but only had 1 hit while he was on the mound and could not muster any runs through 7 innings. The Brewers added another run in the 9th as Huira went hard. The Cubs were able to get a runner on in the bottom of the 9th but a grounder lead to a double play that allowed the Brewers to steal game 1. The Cubs lineup wasted a great outing by Colas as he went 7 innings and only allowing 4 base runners while striking out 6.

The Mets and Padres also squared off for game 1 and the Friars were able to get the better of New York 3-0 as Paddack was able to outlast Degrom.

Cubs Look to Rebound in Game 2.

In game 2 the Cubs looked to even the series and would need the bats to show up as the Cubs went with Kyle Hendricks while the Brewers would have Adrian Houser starting the gameThe Cubs were able to get on the board in the first as Bryant walked and Contreras single that lead to Kyle Schwarber at the plate. Schwarber was able to take a 1-2 fastball to right center field to get the Cubs on the board early.

Kyle Hendricks pitched 2 perfect innings but allowed a bloop single in the 3rd; for the 2nd consecutive year Hendricks would have to leave a playoff start early with injury. In last year’s world series the professor left game 2 of the world series and would miss the rest of the post season with blisters. This time it was a hamstring injury that would pull him for the game. Yu Darvish entered and gave up another hit before getting a an out and a double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the 3rd the Happ hit a solo blast to make the score 4-0 before Reyes knocked in another runner two batters later on a line drive double.

Yu Darvish pitched 4 innings allowing 1 run before the Cubs pulled him; Darvish was going strong but without knowing how long Hendricks would be out, they decided to not waste his arm in case he is needed to start game 5. The bullpen was able to get it to the 9th keeping the score at 5-1; in the 9th Clase gave up a solo home run to Corey ray but would not let the Brewers get any closer as the Cubs tied up the series with a 5-2 victory. The Cubs got a break as Kyle Hendricks was diagnosed with hamstring tightness but will be ready to go for game 5 if needed.

The Mets evened their series as they beat the Friars 2-1 behind a solid start from Syndergaard. Boston was able to get past the White Sox 9-4; the AL Cy Young winner Jose Berrios got roughed up a bit giving up 4 runs but struck out 9 and the Bo Sox lineup did enough to push them past Chicago. The Angels and Twins combined for 6 home runs in a barn burner as the Angels were able to outlast the Twins 13-10.

The Cubs and Brewers will have a day off as they travel 90 miles up I-94. In Game 2 of the ALDS the Angels went up 2-0 on a 9-4 win. Mike Trout has struggled in his post season as he is hitting under .200 but Los Angeles has found other ways to get runs in without their star producing. Boston was also able to go up 2 games as they outlasted Chicago 5-4. Chris Sale went 8 innings but the bullpen gave up 2 in the 9th as they squeaked by the south siders.

Cardinals split series with Cubs. Lead still 3 games

The Cardinals and Cubs split their 4 game series in St.Louis and the Cardinals lead remains at 3 games. The Cardinals won the series opener and series finale with the Cubs winning Friday and Saturday.

Biggest takeaway from the series is that the Cardinals pitching staff is just struggling as either the starters are getting beat up or the bullpen can't hold leads. Really need to find consistency again within the staff if the Cardinals want to not only make a run in the playoffs, but reach the playoffs.

Cardinals are off on Monday and will stay in St.Louis and welcome their AL rivals, the Royals to Busch Stadium for a quick 2 game mid-week series.

Cardinals sweep mini series with Royals

The Cardinals swept their mini two game mid-week series with the Royals. The Cardinals will maintain a 2 1/2 game lead over the Cubs with 10 games left on the regular season slate.

Kyle Funkhouser and Jack Flaherty both earned wins this series, with Funkhouser's being an odd win, as he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 5th, trailing 5-0, and the Cardinals proceeded to put 7 runs on the board, followed by 3 in the 6th, to win the game 10-5 over the Royals.

Jack Flaherty looked like the Flaherty the Cardinals had hoped for when signing him to a multi year deal in the offseaon, going 8 innings striking out 12 and allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits. Flaherty didn't get a chance at a complete game, even though up 6-2 in the 8th, due to being at 126 pitches.

The Cardinals will now travel to Cincinnati for a 4 game weekend series against the Reds who are fighting for a playoff spot.

                              Remaining schedule:

                              4 @ CIN
                              3 vs MIL
                              3 @ CHC

Cardinals claim Brandon Workman off waivers from Red Sox

The Cardinals have claimed 35 year old RHP Brandon Workman off waivers from the Red Sox. Workman is 4-5 this year with a 3.95 ERA and 1 save. The Red Sox put him on waivers after activating Tyler Jay from the 15 day IL.

The Cardinals are hopeful that Workman can help stabilize a bullpen that has been rocky for the last 3 weeks.

Griffin Roberts was optioned back to the minors to make room

Mets Swept by Marlins, Division Lead Cut in Half
                                June 2, 2024

The Mets came into this series having won 6 straight and holding a 6-game lead in the division over the Marlins. Unfortunately, the Marlins were the ones to take advantage of the head-to-head matchup and won all 3 games, neutralizing the Mets' bats for most of the series, and cutting their deficit to 3 games in the division.

The series finale was the only game that provided any excitement. The Mets were able to fight back and tie the game in the bottom of the 8th before the Marlins took back the lead in the top of the 9th against Kelvin Herrera.

Both C Eddy Fabregas and 2B Brent Durango made their MLB debuts in the series finale. Fabregas went hitless and Durango had a single in his first AB, but was held hitless afterwards.

The Houston Astros (31-33) come to town tomorrow, and the Mets hope to reboot their offense, which had been firing on all cylinders before the Marlins series.
