    Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs Travel to A town as First Place Team Square off

The Cubs had a day off and would travel to Atlanta to play the first place Braves. The Braves sit at 25 wins and 15 losses on the young year and return a most of their core from a year ago. Puig moved on but Justin Dean has taken off the right field duties. The Braves have a solid pitching staff and are aided by returning 4 Gold Glovers from a year ago: Langielers at Catcher, Freeman at 1st, Ozzie Albies at 2nd and Acuna in 2nd. In the first game Sean Newcomb would take on Kyle Hendricks. The Cubs had early success in running up Newcomb’s pitch count but it did not translate into runs until the 5th when Nico Hoerner was able to walk and 2 batters later Kris Bryant was able to get on with a single to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Rafeal Guerra was up and said when Newcomb had a pick off attempt sail into the stands to move the runners in scoring position. Guerra was able to single up the middle to score Nico to take the lead. The Braves would respond in the bottom of the 5th with a Austin Riley solo shot but Hendricks would keep continue his impressive run as he went 7innings giving up 6 hits and striking out 5. In the 7th the Cubs were in business with runners at 3rd and 1st as Kyle Schwarber came up as a pinch hitter and 1 out. Schwarber would miss on a pitch but got enough for it to take a odd bounce; Nico was able to score and Brennan Davis got to 2nd safely to make it 2-1. Carl Edwards Jr and Clase again showed to be a great 1-2 punch in the 8th and 9th as they held the Braves scoreless to seal the win.

In game 2 DeGrom gave up a early home run to Gallo but settled in after that as he gave up just 2 hits in 7 innings and struck out 11. The Cubs tied it in the 4th on a Victory Reyes double. The Cubs would give Degrom the win when JD Martinez got on with a single and Brennan Davis pinch run and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Cubs would make it 3-1 with a Rizzo sac fly. Contreras homered in the 8th to make it 4-1 and that would be the ball game. Besides the Gallo home run, Atlanta was held in check as they would go down swinging 15 times.

In the 3rd game Colas struggled as he could only go 4.1 innings and gave up 7 runs including home runs to Acuna, Langeliers and Gallo in the 10-1 loss.

The Cubs would struggle in the next series as they split the 4 gamer against the Marlins 2-2. AJ Puk will spend some time out as was moved to the IL with a hamstring injury as he could only go 4 innings before being removed from the game as a precaution. Duane Underwood Jr to the show. The Series also saw Kyle Hendricks lose his first game after going 8-0 in his first 8 starts. Hendricks gave up 2 runs in 6 innings but the Cubs offense couldn’t produce enough to keep his streak alive. After the Series the Cubs announced that they are going to tweak their order. Anthony Rizzo has not rebounded from a down year the previous season and has struggled to get on base consistently to the tune of a .250 average. Rizzo will be dropped in the order he will bat 6th. Nico Hoerner has kept his hot start as hits over 300 and will now bat second between Bryant and Contreras. Chicago also announced that Richard Kell was optioned to AAA Iowa. Kell has struggled since his break out year 2 seasons ago. With Hoerner’s strong play he has had limited at bats & he is hitting under .200 and the Cubs brought Mariano Velaquez backup from Iowa. The Cubs are hopeful that Kell can rejoin the club later in the year if he can regain his swing with consistent at bats. The Cubs will face off against Colorado at Wrigley before facing the Marlins again as May comes to a close. The Cubs are 1.5 games ahead of the Brewers and 8 games head of the Pirates.

Rangers Split Season Opening Series Vs Astros 2-2

To start our season we would flip flop wins with an 11-8 opening day win, a 5-9 loss, a 4-3 win, and a 7-2 loss. Kluber, Lynn, and Minor were all solid in their season debut’s. Gibson was mauled for 13 hits and 7 runs over 5 innings in Game 4.

      Notes From The Series:

Mark Canha Injured In G2, Out 1-2 Months With Separated Shoulder
Brock Holt would replace him in LF in that game coming up with a clutch 2 hit 2 RBI performance, but this is definitely a blow to the lineup.

      A Greg Bird Breakout?
It’s only been 3 games for him, but so far Bird has carried over his hot spring training into the regular season and shown the potential the Yankees saw in him. In his first 8 AB’s of 2021, he has 4 hits, 2 HR’s, 4 RBI’s, and a walk.

      Next:
We head to LA to take on a still undefeated 4-0 Angels team. After that, we’ll be back at it against the Astros for 3 games in Houston.

      News:
Rangers Claim OF Jay Bruce Off Waivers From Red Sox
Boston signed Bruce to a cheap 2.5M 1 year deal over the offseason but he didn’t end up on the opening day roster and was placed on waivers. With Canha out 1-2 months, Bruce will likely fill in until Canha returns. The 32 year old, born in Texas, only played in 55 games last year with Philly, struggling to a 243\286\438 line.

Red Sox SP Jameson Taillon’s Season Over With Head Fracture
Boston acquired an injured Taillon from the Pirates at last year’s trade deadline, hoping he could help propel them back into contention this year as their #2 starter behind Ace Chris Sale. To make it worse, next season is his final year of ARB control. So they ended up trading to get just 1 season of Taillon a year and a half later.

Orioles SP Alex Cobb Tears Rotator Cuff, Season Over
With how that contract has gone for them I think this about sums up Orioles fans reaction: Oh no! Anyway.....

Mets Finally Break The Streak, But Lose Series

        August 11, 2024

The Mets were finally able to get back in the win column with a win this afternoon in the series finale against St. Louis. Dakota Chalmers gave up 1 run over 6 innings, and Eloy Jimenez delivered the big hit, a 3 run triple in the 5th inning. The Mets would go on to win 5-1.

The Mets looked like they might break through in Games 1 & 2, but the Cardinals would win both in dramatic fashion. First, in Game 1, Syndergaard tried to put the team on his back, pitching 7 no hit innings. A triple and a single in the bottom of the 8th would tie it, and a home run by former Met, OF Brandon Nimmo, would give the Cardinals the 2-1 win.

The Mets struck first in Game 2, putting up 4 runs in the first inning. The Cardinals would chip away though, finally tying the game in the bottom of the 6th inning before winning it on a walk-off bases loaded single in the 9th.

It feels good to be back in the win column, but the Mets lost 15 straight before doing so. Their division lead has been cut to 5 games, and they head to Washington next in hopes of putting this losing streak behind them.

            2. Sometimes the issue isn't the player, but me (or possibly you in this case). You've already mentioned you're pushing too hard. I find often when I break these slumps, it's when I'm not thinking about breaking the slump. A few ways you can fool yourself into not thinking about it: Mix up his spot in the order. Skip batting intro cutscenes for a game to help you lose track of who is at bat. Pause and toss on some music when he comes to the plate.

            3. If things get drastic, and you're ok with making player edits, try editing the players swing to a swing you feel more compatible with. This can sometimes make all the difference. Think of it like a player retooling their swing.
I have put him in different spots in the line-up. I use zone, but i gotta start making him work the count better. I will try editing his swing a tad and see how it works.

              Mets Weekly Report

Home to take on the Diamondbacks, the Mets look to get some distance from the second place Braves.

Noah Syndergaard was the story of the first game. As he went a full 9 and striking out 13. He had Arizona guessing the whole game with all his pitches working. Especially his change-up which help propel the Mets to the 8-0 win.

In game two the Mets got another good outing from Marcus Stroman who pitched 7 unnings while giving up 1 run off 5 hits. Michael Conforto continues to have a sould first half with 2 doubles. And Ken Giles closed out the game for his 12th save in the 3-1 win.

Looking for the sweep New York jumped Madison Bumgarner for 3 runs in the first inning. That would be all they would score but they held on as Stephen Gonsalves who went 7 innings giving up just 2 runs on four hits got help from the pen again. Jen Giles closed it out again to earn his 13th save.

Up next came the Phillies. The Mets ran out front by scoring 7 runs in the first 3 innings. But Philadelphia didn't quit. Down 7-2 in the fourth they got to emergency starter Yefry Ramirez. He replaced Thomas Szapucki who was stricken with the flu bug going around. Ramirez gave up another 6 5 runs to allow the Phillies to tie it. Trying not to blow up the pen Ramirez went out for the start of the 6th and failed to get another out allowing Philly to take the lead 8-7. Both pens would hold strong till the end which allowed Philadelphia to claim the 8-7 victory.

In game two Jacob deGrom wasn't he CY Young self. Philadelphia got to him in the fourth inning for 3 runs on 7 hits. The offense could help out as the 3-2 loss gave the Phillies the series win.

Looking to avoid the sweep the Mets jumped out front with 3 runs in the first inning. Noah Syndergaard took the help and ran with it as ge shockingly went 9 innings again in back to back starts. Striking out 8 and giving up just 5 scattered hits for the complete game shut-out. J.T. Realmuto was the main contributor to the offense going 2-4 with a Homer and 5 rbi in the 8-0 win.

New York will head to Milwaukee for a quick three game road trip, then come back home for a 6 game homestead against the Rockies and Pirates.

Jeff McNeil was seen doing extra work in the cages working on what he calls "minor adjustments" to his swing and approach at the plate. Hopefully this will help him get back to form. It has to, It can't get any worse then it is right now, can it?

                Cardinals sweep Mets

The Cardinals (15-13) swept the Mets over the weekend as they look to put a winning streak together after playing .500 baseball for the first full month of the season.

The Cardinals did it with a combination of pitching and hitting as this was the most balanced series of the young season for the defending World Series Champions. When the Cardinals needed pitching to keep the scores low to help out an offensive slump they did it and when the bats needed to pick up the pitching, they did it.

Cardinals also got a second terrific start from veteran LHP Austin Gomber who is now 2-0 on the year with a 0.98 ERA in 14 1/3 innings of work thus far. The Cardinals will have a roster decision to make when Jack Flaherty returns from the IL here in about a week.

The Cardinals will stay in St.Louis as they welcome the Brewers to town for a three game series beginning tomorrow night, concluding on Wednesday. The Cards are off on Thursday as they fly out west for a series with the Giants.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

                  The Amazins

Mets Take Series, Their First Since July
                  August 14, 2024

The Mets took 2 of 3 from the rival Nationals, dropping the middle game over the weekend.

Michael Conforto played hero in Game 1, hitting his 30th HR of the season, a 2-run shot, in the top of the 9th to give the Mets a 5-3 victory. In Game 3, the Mets offense exploded for 12 runs on 20 hits.

It is encouraging to see some life out of New York after that 2 week losing streak. There had been some grumblings coming from the front office about Manager Mickey Callaway, but those have since been silenced. Winning really does fix everything.

The Mets get a day off and then host to Miami for 2 games before heading to Chicago to face the Cubs for 4. The Marlins, who have also struggled as of late, are 7 games behind the Mets for the division.

                  Lucroy Returns from IL

Jonathan Lucroy returned from the IL before Game 2 of the series against the Nationals. He went 2-8 with a walk and a strikeout in the last two games of the series. Lucroy has enjoyed a career resurgence since joining the Mets a year ago. He was the backup in Miami and now has the starting role for the division leaders. He has a .735 OPS over the last two seasons and has played solid defense behind the plate, not to mention the veteran leadership he brings to the clubhouse.

Regardless of how the rest of this year goes, it will likely be his last in NY. Lucroy is likely to retire, and if he doesn't the Mets plan on Eddy Fabregas and Luke Wray to split the position next year.

Wray was sent down to Syracuse to make room on the roster.

Amir Garrett Headed Back To IL

In just his third start since returning from injury, Amir Garrett finds himself headed right back to the 15-Day IL. He came up lame in the 4th inning of Game 2 against the Nationals complaining of back pain. It's no more serious than a pulled muscle, but back issues can linger and the Mets want to make sure Garrett is right for the homestretch of the season.

Julio Fernandez will be recalled to fill his spot in the rotation. The Mets are excited to see more of the youngster.

Mets Sweep 2 Games Against Marlins
                      August 17, 2024

The Mets took care of the Marlins in their quick 2-game set this week, pushing their division lead back up to 9 games. Fortunately, it looks like the Mets might survive their mid-summer collapse.

The sweep featured a 1-0 win in the finale thanks to Dakota Chalmers and the bullpen. Chalmers went 6.2 IP giving up 4 H and 3 BB while striking out 9. The young righty is in his first full year in the rotation and he has already proven himself formidable. On the year he's 13-5 with a 2.86 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, both good for the best among Mets starters.

The Mets (73-54) now head to Chicago to take on the first place Cubs (69-58).

Rotation Takes Another Blow, Machado Headed to IL

One of the risks of trading Dave Monahan at the deadline was the fact that it would leave the Mets rotation depth a little thin. Now that Sean Machado will be joining Amir Garrett on the IL, their biggest fear has been realized.

Machado will be replaced by another lefty, 24-year old Bruno Mora. Mora has a 3.60 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 127 K in 127.2 IP down in Triple-A Syracuse this season. This will be his first major league experience, and he'll likely get 2 starts under his belt before Amir Garrett returns from the IL.

Cardinals finish April with .500 record

The Cardinals have completed the month of April and have a .500 record overall sitting at 15-15. Its been a tough start to the 2027 season for the defending World Series Champions as they cannot put together a decent winning streak to get themselves into a groove and feeling as though they will be competitive this year. Right now, they sit in 3rd place in the Central, 4 1/2 games behind the Reds.

Manager Mike Matheny is hopeful its just World Series hangover and as the calendar flips to May, the Cardinals will find their footing and win 7/8 out of 10 and get things heading in a more positive direction. Right now, they are just treading water.

The Cardinals first full series of the month of May will be a 4 game weekend set in San Francisco against the Giants.

                            Mets Weekly Report

In a NLDS rematch thr Metropolitans repeated what the did last fall to the Brewers. In the first game Michael Conforto (2-4, HR, 4 rbi) carried the team again in route to a 7-3 victory. In Game 2 Stephen Gonsalves threw a soild 7 innings of work, giving up just one run in the win, his 6th of the seasin. Ken Giles closed out the 2-1 win with his 14th save of the year. In game three Thomas Szapucki tossed 7 innings allowing 2 runs in 6 hits, the offense kept him in front with 8 runs of support. Whit Merrifield and Amed Rosario both came up with three hit games on the 8-2 win.

Home to take on the Rockied, Pete Alonso was the star of the show going 4-5 with 2 homeruns and 5 rbi in a 13-2 drubbing of the Rockies. In game 2 New York hit five home runs as a team (McNeil, Conforto, Springer, Alonso 2) on the way to a 9-3 win.
In the third game New York continued their dominance over Colorado. George Springer went 3-4, HR, 3 rbi, in a 8-4 victory. Jeff McNeil seems to have found something with a 1-3 day and a homerun. The win is New York's seventh in a row.

The Mets will stay home to take on the Pirates, then are off to the West to take on the Rockies then Arizona.

Cardinals option Corey Littrell to Memphis

The Cardinals typically wait until May before making roster moves on performance, but once it hits May, they don't usually hesitate.

And that is the case here with Corey Littrell who the Cardinals have optioned to Memphis. The 35 year LHP has been a cornerstone of the bullpen the past few years, but this year he has struggled to the tune of a 6.00 ERA and has allowed 4 homeruns in just 7 innings of work. He allowed 3 homeruns all of last year.

25 year old LHP Jose Quijada has been recalled in his place.

                                Cardinals split series with Giants

The Cardinals and Giants split their 4 game weekend series in San Francisco. The two teams alternated wins with each time, the winning team shutout the other.

As odd as it may seem over the 4 game series, no homeruns were hit.

The Cardinals remain in 3rd place of the Central, 5 games behind the Reds and 1/2 game behind the Pirates.

The Cardinals will travel to Colorado for a 3 game series with the Rockies to start the week.
