    PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

    August 12, 2020

The Pirates split the final two games against the Diamondbacks at home, before heading to St. Louis where they’d take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals. Make that 5-2 over our last 7, and a new high watermark of 15 games over .500.

Next up we head to Cincinnati for a HUGE 4 game set with the Reds. The Buccos currently trail the Reds by 2.5 games in the division, so here’s our chance to hammer away at that lead a bit if we can steal a series win. This is our last time playing the Reds until the very last series of the year, which will be a 4 game set at home n Pittsburgh.

After Cincinnati, we FINALLY get an off day. It will have been 17 straight games without one. It’s been a brutal stretch that’s taxed our bullpen and starting lineup heavily.

Erik Gonzalez has wrestled the starting second base job away from Kevin Kramer. Kramer started strong when he got called up from AAA, but has cooled off a bit the past few weeks. Gonzalez meanwhile has rode an 8-game hitting streak to a very solid stat line. In a career-high 157 at-bats on the season, he’s slashing .312/.341/.452. Kevin Newman is rehabbing a torn finger ligament and should return from the IL in about two weeks.

Trade deadline acquisition Sean Manaea got roughed up in his first start as a Pirate, but since then he’s been everything we could have hoped for. His numbers over his last 2 outings are beastly: 16 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 15 K, and ZERO runs allowed.

The team is 68-53. We hold the second wild card spot, and the Phillies hold the top spot by just a half game. The Cubs and Diamondbacks are both 3.0 behind us, with the Mets lurking (5.5) and the Brewers (7.0) a bit of a longshot.

The Braves and Phillies are separated by just a half game in the East, and they’ve been duking it out for the top spot pretty much all year. The Dodgers are running and hiding with a 15.5 game lead in the west. They have the best record in baseball (81-41).

In the AL, the Yankees have the best record at 73-48 and lead the East by 11.5 games over the Rays. The central division is a tight one: the Twins currently lead but the Tribe and White Sox are both within 3 games. The Astros lead the Angels by 6 games in the West.

The Indians and White Sox hold the two wild card spots with the Angels (2.5 out), Rangers (5.0), and Rays (6.5) still in the hunt.

Dodgers-Yankees has felt like destiny for a while now, and is still the popular choice for a world series matchup.

    Other storylines to watch:

Mike Trout is having an unreal season (who’s surprised?) He’s slashing .354/.448/.723 and has a 9.4 WAR already. We could be talking about one of the greatest seasons in baseball history if he keeps up the pace.

Justin Turner leads the majors with 38 home runs. He’s also batting .320 and is the frontrunner for NL MVP. Some guys just get better with age.

Bullpen woes cost Cardinals series with Orioles

The Cardinals (4-5) won the series opener, their home opener, against the Orioles on Thursday to start a 3 game series with the Orioles. The Cardinals wouldn't win again this series thanks in large part to the bullpen being unable to keep them in the game. The bullpen combined to give up 13 runs this series with 9 of those occurring in games 2 and 3.

Jordan Hicks continues to struggle as he was the game 2 loser giving up 4 runs without recording an out. Corey Littrell and Adam Cimber would doom the Cardinals in the series finale.

This is a reoccurring theme with this ball club as each offseason the Cardinals set out to rebuild their bullpen and every year it seems to be an issue. 9 games into the 2026 season and the same flags are again rising.

Another point of worry is Kolten Wong who is just 2 for 31 on the season and has committed 3 errors in the field. The Cardinals hope that at some point he can find his old self and get back to getting timely hits and drawing walks.

The Cardinals will get back at it Monday night when the Dodgers come to town for a 4 game series.

Cardinals place DeJong on 10 Day IL

The Cardinals have place IF Paul DeJong on the 10 day IL due to an elbow sprain. DeJong has only started one game for the Cardinals this year and has limited at-bats.

The Cardinals have recalled Chris Taylor from Memphis.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I find the game too easy I am always the best team in the league, win the series, playing on Legend..Mainly because pitching is too easy...Might finally be time to take a break form the show.

          TRUE TO THE BLUE

Mariners Move on to May Friday, May 1st, 2020
After opening the 2020 season with a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak, the Mariners went 11-16 in April and enter May with a record of 11-22. This leaves them at 5th place in the AL West. They are tied for the worst record in the majors with the Rays, Orioles, and Padres. Despite their losing ways, the M's bats have not been a cause for concern. The Mariners enter May ranking 14th in Runs Scored (140), 9th in Batting Average (.276), 10th in On-Base Percentage (.349), 19th in Slugging Percentage (.413), 23rd in Home Runs (35), and 8th in Stolen Bases (22). While the team would certainly welcome more extra-base hits, it has been the pitching staff that has kept them from winning more games. The M's pitching currently ranks dead last in the following categories: Runs Allowed (186), HR Allowed (62), Strikeouts (172), and ERA (5.61).

Yohan Ramirez (0-6), a Rule 5 pick from the Astros, has only had two quality starts in the first six of his career. He has been hit around to the tune of an 8.80 ERA and 1.82 WHIP. The Mariners believe in his stuff and plan on using him out of the bullpen rather than returning him to Houston. Whether or not he will pitch effectively in shorter outings remains to be seen, but it does leave an open spot in the M’s rotation. Several candidates are likely to take the rubber in place of Ramirez, including the Mariners #3 pitching prospect Justin Dunn. Dunn, who struggled in his two starts earlier in the season filling in for the injured Yusei Kikuchi, has not turned things around in AA. In his five starts across both levels this year, he holds an ERA above 8.00 and a BB/9 over 3.00. The other two candidates, veteran Andrew Cashner, who signed a minor league contract with the M’s, and their #1 pitching prospect Logan Gilbert, are not on the 40-man roster. Creating space on the roster for these two pitchers should not be a major hurdle, as both of them represent an improvement to the M’s starting staff. The 33-year old Cashner has turned in three quality starts at the AAA level and holds a 1.89 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 19 IP. Gilbert has impressed in AA, posting a 2.00 ERA and 10.00 K/9, but will most likely not get the call until he can improve his control and lower his BB/9 of 5.00.

The Mariners expect Rookie first basemen Evan White (fractured shin) to return to the lineup sometime in late May and will have to get creative in order to find at-bats for his replacement, Patrick Wisdom. In 22 games since joining the major league club, Wisdom has slashed .298/.344/.476 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. While Wisdom has only manned the corner infield positions for the M's this year, he has experience patrolling the outfield in the past and will likely see playing time there in order to spell outfielders Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis moving forward.

          Here's a look at Seattle's 26-man roster entering May:

Yankees Swept Out Of Minnesota In 4

Our struggles against the now 56-23 Twins continue as after dropping 2 out of 3 to them late last month we’ve now been swept on the road by scores of 5-7, 0-2, 11-12, and 2-5. More close games with them decided by only a few runs that we just can’t seem to come out on top in. We end our season series with them going 1-6 against them. That’s not what you want when there’s a strong chance we’ll run into them in the playoffs.

Our record drops to 51-27 and the Blue Jays have taken advantage of our recent slide creeping up to only 5.5 games behind us now.

We have finally finalized a contract with FA James Shields. The contract is 970K for one year.

Next up: The Yankees return home looking to get back on track as the 24-54 Orioles arrive for a 3 game series before an off day. After that we have another tough test as the 49-29 Cubs roll into the Bronx for a 3 game set.

            News:
            Yankees Complete Minor Swap
The Yankees announced they’ve dealt depth RP Dan Otero to the Nationals in exchange for depth RP Fernando Abad. This was a mostly financially motivated move. Otero is on a 1.2M salary this year compared to Abad’s 590K. Otero has pitched to a 1.17 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP through 46 IP in AAA. Was he the return in the deal partly for the sake of an opportunity to make ABAD name joke here and there? Maybe. Say what you want about this one, but it’s really not ABAD move.

            Twins Making Run At History?
After a huge 4 game sweep over the Yankees, the Twins winning streak is up to 19 games. The 2017 Indians hold the record in AL history with 22 straight wins. As for MLB history, that record belongs to the 1916 New York Giants with 26 straight wins.

              The Amazins

              Marlins Spoil Opening Day
              March 24, 2024

To steal a line from CB, let me know if you've heard this one before.

Mets Closer, Nick Burdi, took a 4-run lead into the top of the 9th against the Marlins. A Jessie Winkler grand slam and a Miguel Sano HR later, and the Marlins were walking out of Citi Field with a 5-4 Opening Day win.

The 2024 season opened up almost exactly how the 2023 season ended. It goes without saying that there was an eery feeling as the fans were walking out of Citi Field this afternoon.

Fortunately, we got 161 more of these to play, and they won't all be this bad (hopefully). Tomorrow will mark Amir Garrett's first start in a Mets uniform.

              Dow Clears Waivers

26 year old LF Randall Dow cleared waivers earlier today, and will remain in Syracuse. Dow had a brief stint in the majors in 2020, but has been stuck in AAA since. There hasn't been much that he could do, however, as the Mets outfield has been a strength in recent years. Dow will provide key depth in the outfield, and is the clear 'next man up' if someone should get injured.

Everything went cold for the Cubs. The record setting April bats, the rotation was ok, but Bernard Nowak has a 6.82ERA after May. The bullpen held together, but the Cubs for the 3rd year in a row has lost Miguel Sano to a significant injury. Sano fractured his shin a week into the month and will miss 2 months of time.

The Cubs have yet to have a season where Sano appears in 100 games, and the streak looks to unfortunately continue. Doug Paloucci who has been very productive in the past will man the hot corner while Sano is gone.
Alec Mills(13.00ERA in 13IP) of the bullpen was sent down for Brett Martin.

The Cubs are 35-24 after May and are 2.5GB of the division now.
June was just as bad as May as the Cubs went 10-16 in the month, and have faltered to 45-40 entering July.

The Cubs team that started off blistering hot starting 24-7 have now found themselves a massive 14GB of the MLB best Brewers and 1.5GB of the 2nd WC spot in the NL. The Cubs have been collapsing at a fast rate.
Nearly every player has cooled off, the rotation has everyone with a 4.00ERA or higher outside of Julio Urias, and the lineup has cooled off immensely.

July will be a big month as the AS break nears. The Cubs will likely have a few All Stars and will look to use the break as a recharger for the 2nd half of the season. It remains to be seen what kind of moves the Cubs make in July to stay in playoff contention moving forward. The fans are not happy with the way this team has been in the last 2 months (22-33). Cubs are 45-40 heading into July.
July again was an up and down month for the Cubs, and despite losing 4 out of 5 to end the month, they still managed to finish the month above .500 at 13-11.

The Cubs did have Juan Soto in the HR derby and he ended up winning with an amazing performance. The Cubs had 3 All-Star selections. LF Henry Browning (1st), LF Juan Soto and CP Clyde Booker. With Browning beating out his teammate to be the starting LF. It has been an amazing bounce back year for Browning who is hitting .318/20HR/54RBI/42SB heading into August.

SP Bernard Nowak continued to struggle and has been replaced in the rotation by another youngster in Francis Easley. The Cubs also signed former Cub hero Sp Kyle Hendricks, who has been waiting for an opportunity. He will spot start here and there and be in the bullpen.

Miguel Sano returned from Injury in the middle of the month and hopes to be a stable middle of the order bat for the coming months. When healthy he has been terrific hitting

                .329/13HR/37RBI in 228AB’s.

The Cubs decided not to make any big moves at the deadline, but a above .500 month was key for them as they are 58-51, and 1GB of the 2nd WC spot. The Brewers are 73-35 and may be the best team in the MLB. Can the Cubs hold on and make a playoff push? These last couple months will be interesting.

                  PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

                  August 19, 2020

The Pirates split a very competitive 4-game series with the first place Reds in Cincinnati, then came home and swept a 2-game interleague series against the 45-82 Tigers. We continue to climb in the standings, now a season-high 17 games over .500 at 72-55. We are 1.5 games out of first and hold the top wild card spot by 3 games over the Braves.

The last-place Marlins come to town next, then a road trip through Philly and St. Louis to wrap up the month of August.

Sean Manaea continues his unbelievable run of dominance, and is probably the hottest pitcher in the game right now. He struck out 13 Tigers over 7 innings in his last start and allowed just 2 unearned runs. His last 3 starts have been phenomenal: 23.0 IP, 10 H, 2 BB, 28 K’s, and just the 2 unearned runs. He’s already set career highs this season for innings pitched (163) and strikeouts (165).

Some injury updates: Second baseman Kevin Newman has nearly completed his rehab from a torn finger ligament. He’s scheduled to rejoin the team during our next road trip.

Righty Trevor Williams (shoulder separation) has begun throwing from a short distance and is progressing faster than expected. He should be cleared to return to the team before the end of the season.

Righty Jameson Taillon (Tommy John Surgery) has begun facing live batters in simulated games at the team’s extended Spring Training facility in Bradenton, FL. With only about 2 weeks left in the minor league season, Taillon won’t get a chance to have a traditional rehab assignment. Instead, he’ll pitch in the Arizona Fall League with eyes on a return to full strength in 2021.

                  News from around the league:

Cubs righty Yu Darvish is out for the season after being diagnosed with a torn labrum. He’s having a decent year, 9-6 with a 3.41 ERA and an impressive 161 K’s in 142.1 IP. The Cubs are just 3 games behind us in the division and wild card.

White Sox SS Tim Anderson is also out for the year after falling victim to the dreaded dislocated ankle. He’s been one of the top offensive players in the AL this season, slashing .331/.382/.550 with 16 HR and 64 RBI. His 4.9 WAR is easily the highest on the team. Sox currently hold the 2nd AL WC spot by 4 games over the Angels.

Those darn Dodgers are playing like that in my franchise. They're about to clinch the west with 23 games remaining. As a matter of fact the Astros too.

You have done well. You took it game by game & now you are in play-off push & now have a chance at the division.

Thanks man! This has been a really fun run so far, especially since I was expecting a full rebuild. This team got off to a good start and just kept the momentum going. I’m not there yet but we’re definitely in the hunt.

The cubs entered spring training with several positions up for grabs. The front office has made it known throughout the off-season that they wanted the future to be now as Nico Hoerner would have every opportunity to win the job at second base. The youngster had struggled in his first full year in the majors batting below 200 much of the season. He was able to finish the 2021 campaign on a bit of a up swing he finished with a .224 batting line and had some timely hits in the post season. In centerfield the Gordon and Ben revere were slated to handle much of the duties but Brennen Davis did get ample playing time in the spring to see if he could earn a spot on the 26 man roster. In the end he did not perform well enough at the plate to supplant either of the veterans and was option to AA to refine his skill. The Cubs had the majority of their starting rotation set behind Darvish Hendricks Alex wood and Oscar colas. The fifth spot and the six starter/long arm in the pen we’re up to grabs with AJ Puk, Verlander, Marquis and Oscar De La Cruz all fighting for the final two spots. In the end skipper David Ross decided to roll with Verlander and AJ Puk. Skipper David Ross was impressed Puk’s resiliency in his short time with the Cubs; “The kid came here with label as damage goods, he had his struggles in the Oakland and had to battle injuries and I think got in his head a little bit. AJ came on a little bit to end the season but was disappointed he didn’t make the playoff roster last year. I think certain players would struggled with that but he worked his tail off in the offseason and I think he is going to have a good year for us, he has the stuff its all between the ears at this point”

The bull pen was mostly set as well as the Cubs decided to keep 3 lefties as Andre Chacin, the Cubs 2020 first round pick, will start the season in the majors to go along with Kyle Ryan and Andrew Miller.

The Cubs also were able lock up Willson Contreras to a 4 year 124m deal. The Cubs finalized their roster as Miguel Amaya made the show. With the Contreras deal and Amaya call up, many around the league expect the Cubs to have Victor Caratini on the trade block. The catcher had preformed well batting .320 in a limited role last season but the budget may not allow the club invest what the back up catcher will call for on the open market. With the North Siders bring in Justin Turner, Kris Bryant is forecasted to spend more time in the outfield then in previous seasons to get Turner’s bat in the lineup. As the team broke camp Bryant said he was ready for the challenge, “It’s definitely an adjustment but its all about preparation. Rossy and I talked and I think I’ll see most of my time in right when I’m not playing 3rd. I have a good feel for the jumps but it’s a whole different ballgame playing in Arizona compared to Wrigley hopefully we get some good weather early on so the Ivy can grow and cushion that outfield wall a bit.”

                          C. Kimbrel
No team has won back to back World Series since the Yankees 3 peat 1998-2000 but the Cubs looked like a squad primed to break that drought as they started the 2022 campaign. the Cubbies were lead by strong performances on the mound to start the first month plus of the season. Andrew Miller has been dominating for the club as he ended April with a ERA under 1 and 1.9k per inning line. Kimbrel also has done his part as he was 9 for 9 in save opportunities in the young season. The cubs lineup was lead by Rizzo, Bryant and Justin Turner. Bryant just missed out on player of the month for the NL as he batted .335 and has 10 homeruns as the Calendar flips to May. Bryant would have taken home the accolade if it weren’t for Josh Bell who has started the season red hot batting over .350 and currently has the lead for homeruns. Rizzo also has given the Cubs a 1-2 punch at the start of the lineup as his batting average stands at .310. Dee Gordon and Kyle Schwarber have struggled to get it going as they currently are batting .167 and .200 respectively. The cubs also have been bitten by the injury bug as quite a few players have struggled with nagging injuries to start the year. Centerfield as been hit particularly hard as Both Gordon and Revere have missed time. First Ben Revere was placed on the IL with a MCL sprain against the Brewers. In the next game, Gordon went down with a hamstring strain; he was able to avoid the IL was held out for about a week. Brennen Davis was called up from AA Tennessee with an opportunity to seize a spot in the show if he was able to show strong play; unfortunately things did not pan out for the youngster, in his second game of the year he had to leave the game in the 5th after breaking his thumb attempting to steal second. Time will tell how the injury affects the young centerfielder’s growth as he had been raking in the early minor league season. While the Cubs have improved their farm system; the last two drafts have mainly focused on pitching & the front office did not feel that they have any outfielders in the minors that they felt were ready to contribute. Tommy La Stella, who signed a minor league deal in the off season was brought up for insurance. Due to the lack of centerfielders available, Javy Baez shifted to the outfield while Nico Hoener took over at short until Gordon was cleared by the medical staff.

Even with the injuries, the cubs average over 4 runs a game to start the season as they lead the Central with a 24-10 record and currently have a 5.5 game lead over the pirates.

                            Cardinals sweep Dodgers

The Cardinals (8-5) earned their first series sweep of the 2026 season by winning all 4 games of their series against the Dodgers in Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals offense was on fire this series scoring 5+ runs in each game and only once having less than double digit hits. Samuel Franco was the star at the plate going 11 for 15 in this series with 2 homeruns, 3 doubles, and 8 RBI's. Brendan McKay finally got back into MVP form from last year as he recorded a hit in all 4 games and having Juan Fabregas back in the lineup was a boost to the offense as he had 7 RBI's on the series.

The bullpen continues to be shaky for the Cardinals, especially Jordan Hicks who in the series finale was brought into an 8-2 game to get some work and left without recording an out and the score 8-6. Hicks has appeared in 5 games, has pitched this 1 2/3 innings and has an ERA over 34 and a WHIP over 6. Mike Matheny's patience with the 29 year old has just about run its course through 13 games. Hicks struggled last year and was upset he wasn't the team's closer and that frustration has apparently carried over to this season.

The Cardinals who trail the Cubs by a game early in the standings will travel to the Windy City to face their rivals at Wrigley Field for a 3 game weekend series.

Cardinals expected to DFA Jordan Hicks

The Cardinals, aside from injuries, generally do not make any roster moves based on performance until after the month of April and typically wait until mid-May when possible.

But...….with the completely disastrous start to the 2026 season for Jordan Hicks, the frustration that carried over from last year and the turmoil he is bringing to the clubhouse, its expected the Cardinals will designate the 29 year old for assignment. Hicks was upset he wasn't named the team's closer last year when Rosenthal moved on. He was even more upset when Matheny removed Osuna from the closer role and the team acquired Tyler Jay and Greg Holland to handle the role. And when the team didn't re-sign Holland in the offseason and made it known that Jay would be a set up man, he was frustrated the team went back to Osuna. This frustration has led Hicks to a dismal 34+ ERA, 6+ WHIP and while he's appeared in 5 games, he's only completed 1 2/3 innings.

Hicks, who is out of options, will definitely not clear waivers so expect the Cardinals to engage in early season trade discussion with the 29 other clubs during the 10 day assignment period.

Hicks had so much promise but his ego and frustration got in the way of him continuing to work at improving his consistency that would've likely led him to the closer role or set up role he desired. Instead, his ego is likely going to find him a new home.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

The Cubs decided not to for them as they are 58-51, and 1GB of the 2nd WC spot. The Brewers are 73-35 and may be the best team in the MLB. Can the Cubs hold on and make a playoff push? These last couple months will be interesting.
                                Cubs 2025 Season

The Cubs went 17-11 in August, and are at 75-62 overall. Everybody stepped up and has been delivering as of late. Sano has been an absolute beast since return from injury. Browning and Soto continue to play at All-Star levels, and Javier Baez is having his best offensive season since 2021. 2nd year pro 1B Devin Jackson has belted 28HR’s as well. Even Kyle Schwarber who had been the Cubs worst hitter this season by far, has turned it around and is producing solid numbers now.

The rotation still only has 1 starter under a 4ERA in the rotation, but they have all been consistently average, with the Cubs offense keeping them in the games. The bullpen is trusted and the Cubs look primed for a playoff push.

The Giants are 0.5 up on the Cubs for the 2nd WC spot, and the first series of September is a 3 game set vs the Giants. This could be a big swing early in the month. The Mets and Phillies also find themselves within 5 games of the spot. The Cubs only face 1 other team above .500 in September, but it’s the Cardinals (88-48) who they matchup with 7 times.

Cubs 75-62 (0.5GB of WC2) heading into September.
