Odorizzi Dazzles Orioles
Eight shutout innings from right hander
May 19, 2020
Minneapolis--- Jake Odorizzi tossed eight shutout innings and the Twins hit three homeruns on their way to a 6-1 win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon.
Odorizzi (2-3) was sharp from the start as he shut down the first seven men he faced. Over his eight innings, he allowed just four hits and two walks, to go with his season-high eleven strikeouts.
“That felt good,” commented Odorizzi. “This has been a frustrating year so far. I throw the ball well, but just not well enough, or I throw a clunker. Hopefully this one will get me on track.”
The Twins bats did their part in helping Odorizzi settle in. They scored two in the second, one more in the third, and then broke it open with three in the sixth.
Homeruns from Mitch Garver, Jorge Polanco and Nelson Cruz kept the Twins ahead of their record setting pace last season.
“We just keep hitting them,” commented Cruz. “There was a lot of talk last year about juiced baseballs, and how they were going to change them this year. We just have a stacked lineup and we make pitchers pay for their mistakes.”
Austin Hays hit a solo homer off Matt Wisler with two outs in the ninth to break the shutout.
The Twins will continue their 19 games in 19 days stretch tomorrow night as they will welcome in the Chicago White Sox for a four-game set at Target Field. The Twins will send out Michael Pineda (0-2, 12.86) to try to right his ship, while the White Sox will send flame-throwing Michael Kopech (5-3, 3.00) to the bump.
