Cardinals split series with the Pirates

The Cardinals and Pirates split their 4 game series in Pittsburgh over the weekend as they alternated wins. The Cardinals won Thursday and Saturday, while the Pirates won Friday and Sunday.

Andrew Knizner continues to be hot at the plate as he extended his hitting streak to 12 games during the series and Dylan Carlson continues to fill in for Juan Fabregas who was lost for the season, as he is hitting nearly .400 in his past 5 games.

The Cardinals trail the Marlins by 2 games for the 2nd best record in the National League and the Giants by 4 for the best overall record. With 6 to play, its likely the Cardinals will only be able to overtake the Marlins at best.

The Cardinals are off Monday before they host the wildcard battling Reds for 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday, and conclude the 2025 season with a 4 game series with the Brewers who are also battling for the 2nd wildcard. Both series are at Busch.

Sorry to interrupt the flow of stories, but I figured you guys would know best...

I'm about midway through Spring Training and I noticed that every player on my team received identical attribute adjustments (i.e., all position players got -3 vision, +2 discipline, +2 speed, etc.; same sort of thing with the pitchers).

Has anyone ever seen that before? I thought maybe it could be from my coaching staff's attributes influence, but they didn't really match up.

If it keeps doing this throughout the season I'll probably just reset everyone to their default attributes and make my own changes based on performance, but I wanted to see if anybody else has experienced this.

I’m about 2 games from the all star break and the Pirates for whatever reason put Josh Bell on the trade block. I believe he’s been there for some time so I bit and traded for him. I needed an upgrade at first but man this team is stacked now.

        My 3-6 hitters are
        Nolan Arenado
Joey Gallo (39 HRs and 100 RBIs. Might break Bonds record)
        Josh Bell
Danny Santana (hitting .400 and has 42 doubles. Will probably break that record too lol)

It’s the attribute effect of your coaching staff that you’re seeing. Assume you are seeing this in the lineup selection screen before starting a game? The players’ unadjusted stats and progression can be seen on their player cards in the regular franchise menu.

            PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

            April 23, 2020

Pirates get swept at home by the Brewers to drop back below .500 at 12-13. The team has lost 5 in a row now and can’t seem to hit and pitch on the same day. Bryan Reynolds went 0-13 in the Brewers series and Mitch Keller failed to survive more than 3 innings for the second start in a row. Ouch. Dodgers are coming to town next so we face the improbable odds of trying to get back on track against Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler.

It’s bad news in the minors as well. 2018 first rounder and current #3 Pirates prospect Travis Swaggerty broke his leg sliding into second base on a steal attempt. Swaggerty was off to a roaring start in AA, batting over .340 with 5 stolen bases. The silver lining is the break was relatively minor and he should be back on the field this summer.

A’s righty Paul Blackburn, yes Paul Blackburn, pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians in Oakland.

The Cubs pitching has performed better as of late, youngster Bernard Nowak has stringed together some impressive outings and has his ERA at 4.42 with 99K’s in 95IP/

Jose Berrios continues to dominate and looks primed to be an all-star selection with a 10-4, 2.58ERA through 17 starts.

The offense has been the downfall of the Cubs, they suffered many games where they were shutout or scoring 1-2 runs. They are 28th in the MLB in average, and 30th in OBP, dead last in MLB. The offense needs a spark and in a contract year the Cubs would really like to see 1B Anthony Rizzo step up who is only hitting .252/10HR/36RBI through 72 games.

The Cubs may look to make a move in July to improve the lineups performance.

Cubs sit at 44-40 just over the halfway mark of the season.

The first half of July was no other word then awful for the Cubs as they started the month going 0-7. They went 3-2 In the last 5 heading into the AS break to enter as a team at 48-49. The division is 8.5GB and the WC if 5.5GB. Not completely out of reach, but it compelled the Cubs to make some moves that will help the future.

The Cubs had 3 all stars at the deadline, Javier Baez, Aroldis Chapman, and Jose Berrios.

That was the only good news, as during that stretch a major bittersweet trade happened that sent two Cubs packing in 1B Anthony Rizzo and CP Aroldis Chapman both in contract years were sent to the 59-36 Diamondbacks.

The D-Backs are looking to go all in on a World Series and have the best record in the MLB and filled both holes on the team, the Cubs were able to nab top 10 Prospect CF Mario Dorta who has been blocked by Ketel Marte and another young CF Corbin Carroll.

The Cubs also shipped SP Lance Lynn to the Rockies for RP prospect Tommie
                    Kendrick.

The Cubs seem to officially be in sell mode at the AS break, and it will be interesting to see how the Cubs locker room will handle the moves. Rumors are the Cubs may not be done yet, but expect to see Mario Dorta and
possibly top prospect Jose Serrano at Wrigley soon.

Cubs are 48-49 at the break.
The rest of July was a wild one. The Cubs lost Miguel Sano, Javier Baez, Henry Browning, and Doug Paolucci to inury. All of them required to be placed on the 60 day DL with injuries ranging from 2-3 months. All of the injuries happened within the AS break and the July 31st deadline.
Somehow, the Cubs were able to finish the month 56-54, going 12-14 overall in the month after the 0-7 start.

Prized prospects SP Jose Serrano and CF Mario Dorta (Rizzo Trade) were called up for the first game after the AS break. Serrano had two starts in July and is 2-0, 4.50ERA.

CF Mario Dorta is hitting .286/1HR/4RBI/4SB through 40 AB’s.
With all the injuries the Cubs had to dip in the pool of veterans still looking for a job in free agency.

Cubs signed UTIL IF Marwin Gonzalez for the remainder of the season

Cubs Signed 3B Josh Donaldson for the remainder of the season.

Both are older vets that will possibly see substantial playing time moving forward with the injuries. Cubs also called up SS Sherman Stark, OF Derek Tate, to keep the roster at 26.

Cubs are 56-54 heading into August, and although they have shown they are in seller mode, they remain only 5GB of the 2nd NL WC spot.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

The 2020 Cubs entered spring training as an organization at a crossroads. After winning their first championship in a century back in 2016, the club looked poised to make it to multiple World Series. This dream did not come to fruition as the Cubs were not able to recapture the spark of the ‘16 season. Fast forward 4 years, the Cubs have major questions that will need to be answered as they decide on making moves to extend their window or rebuild/reload as key contributors will be looking for big pay days. Theo Epstein came into spring training with two objectives 1) Find ways to lock up the core of Baez, Schwarber, Contreas & Bryant 2) replenish the farm system to provide cheap quality players to surround them.

As spring training neared its end the platoon of Almora and Happ in centerfield was underwhelming. The cubs brought in Ben Revere, who was trying to resurrect his career after being out of baseball for several years. Manager David Ross planned to bat the speedster 2nd after Bryant as the club greatly needed an infusion of speed on the basepaths.

The season did not get off to a great start as Yu Darvish was gave up 5 in the first 3 innings and ultimately left the game in the 5th with a calf injury that would put him on the Injury List. Unfortunately this would ultimately be the first of 3 trips to the IL for the starter as he did not have the bounce back season he was looking for; at seasons end he would go 11-8 with a 4.66 ERA. Even with their Ace not performing, the North Siders were able to bounce back after losing the opening series to the Brew Crew. The cubs were on top of the division with a large lead by the end of April. Kris Bryant led the club with a 345 average and Schwarber topped the NL with home runs.

The Cubs continued to roll through the division as they entered June with a 8 game lead. Revere looked to be a key pickup as he was slashing with a .320 line hitting in between Bryant, & Wilson Contreas.. Bryant and Schwarber represented the Cubbies in the home run derby but could not come away with JD Martinez, who was leading majors in dingers came out on top. The Cubs have 4 representatives to the All Star game as Bryant, Contreas, Schwarber and Kyle Hendricks. The Cubs essentially had the Central wrapped up as the Brewers floundered and the Cardinals looked to move contracts as they moved Paul Goldschmidt to the Yankees. The cubs took advantage of the fire sale in St. Louis as they were able to trade for left Andrew Miller. The Cubs weren’t done making moves as they added Nate Jones from the Rangers. Once a question mark; opposing teams would now have a formidable task of getting through the 7th 8th and 9th innings with the key additions to go along with Kimbrel and Brandon Morrow who return to the big club in June. The cubs also set their eyes to the future as they signed potential 2 way player Oscar Colas from Cuba who was playing in Japan. The 21 year old lefty also could play the corner outfield & was moved to triple A and had potential of being a call up in Sept. if he got to a fast start. To end July the Cubbies took advantage of the extension period to lock up Baez and Rizzo to 6 and 5 year deals. Many were skeptical of management’s decision to sign the first basemen to a deal that they likely won’t get the return for during the later years - time will tell if this decision will have consequences in the future.

As the summer waned on, the Cubs looked to be a virtual lock to make the fall classic as they lead the league in wins and had the Central locked up by August. Trouble was brewing though as the once hot bats started to cool. Ben Revere was not able to keep his hot start going as faltered mightly in the 2nd half. After hitting .300 playing 75% of the starts in CF, his bat became nonexistent in the 2nd half as he finished hitting .259 but did produce on the basepaths as he led the NL with 42 stolen bases. The slump bug hit Bryant as well as he was in the running for MVP at the All Star break batting .320 but ended poorly as his average went down to .283 by seasons end. With a playoff spot secured Manager Davi Ross elected to give his stars plenty of rest as Oscar Colas and Nico Hoerner were called up in Sept. Nico produced well enough to make the playoff roster; mainly as a defensive replacement at 2nd. Kyle Scwarber and Rizzo were able to keep the cubs in games and the squad still won 104 games as Schwarber batted .247 and smacked 46 home runs.

In the NLDS the Cubs faced off against the up and coming Padres. In hindsight it appears the Cubs took the friars too lightly as they may have been looking ahead to the next round where they would have to face either the Dodgers or Nationals. The Padres were young and hungry, but few gave them a chance as Manny Machado started the playoffs on the IL with a shoulder injury. San Diego was able to get to Kyle Hendricks to take a 3-0 lead in the 2nd. As was the trend for most of the second half of the season. The cubs were not able to get timely hitting as the bats fell quiet; they managed to get 2 over in the 6 and 7th but could not produce anymore as the Padres were able to steal the game one win. In game 2 the cubs were able to take back control of the series as Darvish gave the club 6 and ⅔ solid innings as the cubs were able to produce 6 runs. The Padres also suffered a blow as Fernando Tatis Jr. came out of the game with a sprained ankle. X Rays were negative but the Friars were going to be without the left side of their infield for the rest of the series. In game 3, the cubs looked to take the lead in the series but struggled to produce at the plate early on. Quintana was shaky early on as the Padres depleted lineup was able to scratch out runs. Behind 4-1, the Cubs had a chance in the 9th as Bryant blasted a solo shot to left with 1 out. A storm looked to be brewing as Rizzo, who was moved up to batting second in the later stages of the season, singled to center field and Wilson Contreas took 6 pitches and earned the walk. With the heart of the line up and runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out, Scwarber came to the plate with a chance to take the lead but only was able to advance the runner to 3rd on a long fly out that he just got under. Baez was up next and took the first pitch right field that scored 1 and left the cubs with runners at the corners with 2 outs for Ian Happ. Yates was able to gather his composure though as he shut the door on the cubs rally as he got Happ to ground out. In the pivotal game 4 Jon Lester took the mound as the cubs looked to turn things around. The game was tight as Lester and Dineslon Lamet were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first 6 innings. David Ross' decision to keep Lester in for the 7th in the scoreless game proved costly as the Padres outfield Tram was able to get a triple to start the innings. The cubs with Nate Jones but the rally could not be squashed a two run shot to center produced the game's only runs as the cubs were shut out and went back to Chicago to watch the rest of the playoffs thinking about what might have been.

Whats your line up look like with all those injuries? If you can sneak in the playoffs and get Baez or others back that would be a nice jolt

Yankees Activate Aaron Hicks From IL, Sweep Rays

This was a series of what could’ve been for Tampa. The Rays let game 1 slip away after Renfroe tied it in the 9th 3-3 with a 2 run bomb off Tyler Clippard, in the bottom half Gio Urshela would walk it off with a Solo HR into the Rays bullpen to lead off the inning.

In game 2, a 3 run HR from Aaron Hicks in just his 2nd game back from injury off Blake Snell in the 4th would define the game. The Rays lone run came in the 1st. Yankees go on to win 3-1.

In game 3 the Rays headed to the 9th up 4-2 on the brink of salvaging the finale of this 3 game set. Closer Nick Anderson entered the game. First man up, Urshela solo HR to left 389 feet to cut it to 4-3! Up steps Mike Ford. 428 foot blast to right! Back to back to tie the game at 4! Still no outs....Aaron Hicks up to bat. The new 3 batter rule forces Anderson to stick around. A drive from Hicks! Gone! Back to back to back to win it, capped off with a 387 foot slam from Hicks! The new Ray Killer.

Next up: a day off, then we welcome the 26-40 Royals to town for 3 games.

                              News:
Yankees SP Domingo German Back From Suspension
This left us with a tough decision. No one in the rotation of Cole, Paxton, Tanaka, Schmidt, and Happ, deserves to lose their rotation spot. We optioned Montgomery to AAA to create room for German. The decision is to slide Happ to the bullpen as the LR at least for now. German will take over the 5th spot.

Orioles snap 7 game losing streak with 3-1 win over Tampa! It’s their first win against Tampa in six tries. The win brings their record to 27-44. Before the game they traded Wade LeBlanc to the Cardinals for 2019 third round pick P Tony Locey. Up next for the birds is a trip to Ohio to take on the Indians
