Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

It's that time of the year again where I start my Chicago Cubs franchise and I am so excited that I will be able to get it as close to realistic as possible with the inclusion of most of the real minors. I may have to restart after the new roster update adding more minor leaguers to the fold. This will all depend on who is added though.
Oversight: My difficulty will be as followed
    Batting: Hall of Fame
    Pitching: Legend
I will be using Mike Lowe's sliders as I feel they give me the most realistic stats. I will be posting next a roster break down from coming out of spring training as well as the three series I have already played to start the season.

Hey guys, for the time being, I will be suspending my Brewers franchise for a little bit. (no, not because of the COVID-19). But I ended up starting a new franchise with a created team and I am having way too much fun to play any other franchise right now. I am posting under the Dynasty HQ forum. I'll have the link below, if you could check it out that would be awesome, as i'll likely keep updating it on there.

The Blue Jays move to 2-0 on the season beating the Red Sox 4-3 on a walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th by Vlad Jr. the Jays took the early lead with a RBI single by Panik in the 3rd. Roark making his first start for Toronto had trouble only in the 4th when he gave up a 3-run shot to Moreland. Panik added another RBI single in the 5th followed by A Vlad solo homer in the 6th to tie it. It would remain scoreless until the bottom of the 9th when Vlad crushed a rocket to LF on a first pitch change up by Hildenberger, his second homer of the game and a walk off to send the fans home happy.

So according to Ridin, not all options will be fixed this weekend so then would you recommend just waiting for the roster this weekend and then doing 30 team control anyway?

You can still go into mode specific profile settings in franchise and change all teams to manual. If you have a separate profile for the computer.

            Cardinals Camp Battles - Catchers

The Cardinals ended the 2024 season and went into the offseason with the idea that top prospect Devon Snow would be the everyday catcher and Andrew Knizner would serve as his backup. The Cardinals bought into this idea so much they traded Carson Kelly to the Padres for RHP Jacob Nix even though Kelly was having a breakout year at the plate and was again solid behind the dish.

The Cardinals continued to maintain that approach throughout the offseason and winter meetings, but when they saw Kelly still unsigned in mid-February the front office decided to bring the 32 year old back on a one year deal to serve as the 3rd catcher, a mentor of sort during spring training, as they didn't feel comfortable with their other catchers on the depth chart as being ready for the big leagues.

Now in camp, Carson Kelly may be proving to be the best all around catcher the Cardinals have in Florida, and its quite possible that Snow ends up back in Memphis for another year of development, or Andrew Knizner is passed thru waivers which he will likely not go unclaimed.

The Cardinals are wanting Snow to take the reigns, but he continues to really struggle against big league pitching as he has just one hit this spring in 16 at-bats and has only one walk. Knizner is hitting much better but his defense and game managing leave something to be desired. He has 3 errors on the spring in limited action.

And then there is Kelly. While he's not tearing the cover off the ball, he is hitting .262 with 4 RBI's and has managed his games quite well, in fact the Cardinals have 3 wins this spring all with Kelly starting behind the plate. His defense and arm isn't as strong as Snow or Knizner but he is still able to keep the running game in check to a degree.

So who will the Cardinals tag as their opening day/everyday catcher? That assuredly is still up for debate, but if they were cutting to the 26 man roster today, you would be hard pressed not to give the job to Carson Kelly.

I've wanted to start a franchise since last Friday but these rosters are so bad that i'm holding off until we get Ridin's rosters this weekend. So disappointed with the rosters we were given on release day.

Cardinals Camp Battles - Starting Pitching

The Cardinals entered camp with 4 of their 5 rotation spots pretty much locked, unless something unforeseen occurred during Spring Training. Kyle Funkhouser, Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez, and Jack Flaherty are almost a certainty to be part of the rotation when camp breaks in 2 weeks. The 5th spot however is still up for grabs between 3 players; Junior Fernandez, Steven Matz, and Dakota Hudson.

Junior Fernandez pitched during September call ups last year and did a decent job in 3 starts going 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA. He's a pitch to contact pitcher, but he has enough makeup to miss the barrel of bats more often than not. This Spring he's pitched just 2 innings where he allowed 1 run on 4 hits and he did strikeout 2 during those two frames. Fernandez was the favorite to win the 5th rotation spot and thus far he hasn't given a reason to remove him from that role.

Steven Matz was a surprise signing by the Cardinals this offseason, but the Cardinals have been known to covet left handed starting pitching. After dealing away Drew Harrington last year, the Cardinals weren't really looking for left handed starters, but with Matz coming off an injury plagued season, they were able to sign him to a one year $7MM deal to take a shot. Matz has been solid this spring as he's gotten in a bit more work than Fernandez, pitching often from the pen. He's logged 6 innings of work allowing 2 runs and just 5 hits. He's been the unfortunate receipient of poor defense while he's on the mound. Matz could make a push to be the 5th starter, or he could be moved to the pen as a spot starter.

Dakota Hudson is probably on his last leg to crack the rotation for the Cardinals. While the chances are slim he does it this spring, Hudson could pitch well enough in the minors to be a top list recall should/when it is required. Hudson has been given opportunities over the last few years, but has never really cemented himself into the big league rotation, and has struggled to stay in the rotation at Memphis.

Don't expect the Cardinals to give anyone else but these 3 a shot at the rotation, but never say never. With teams still figuring things out, it is possible for a new candidate to emerge.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

20 games into the 2020 season with my Red Sox. It's been a mixed bag so far. Sitting at 11-9 and 4.5 games back of the Yankees who are on a 11 game winning streak and sit a 15-4.

The offense has done it's part, leading baseball with 121 runs. The leaders have been who we'd thought they be with Benintendi, Bogaerts, Martinez, and Devers. Benintendi has taken to the lead off spot and currently has a walk rate of 19.5% and an on base % of .476. Martinez leads the team with 7 home runs in 79 at bats. However Bogaerts has been the star out of the 2 spot, hitting .417/.495/.702 with 11 doubles, 2 triples, and 3 home runs. The only disappointment so far has been 2B Jose Peraza, who's hit .191/.191/.255 and is probably gonna be a platoon only player unless he gets going again.

The pitching has been rough outside of a few bright spots. Eduardo Rodriguez has made 4 starts with 4 wins and a 32 to 6 strikeout to walk ratio in 26.1 IP with a 1.71 ERA. Looking like he might be making another jump after a breakout 2019. However the second best ERA in the rotation belongs to Ryan Weber with a 5.40 ERA. Might have to start churning through starters to see if any can perform better.

In the bullpen, Barnes and Workman have been solid. Both with an ERA around 2 and Workman has 6 saves with blowing one yet. The biggest surprise has been Marcus Walden with a 13 to 0 K/BB ratio in 10 innings but he just went on the injured list with a fractured arm. Should be out between 4 to 8 weeks. The wild card is Darwinzon Hernandez. He's thrown 9.2 IP with 15 strikeouts and only 4 hits allowed but also 10 walks, leading to a 4.66 ERA. If he can get ahold of the walks, he could be a dangerous piece going forward.

All in all, I'm gonna wait to see how the next 15 to 20 games go before making any real changes. I might change the bench and back half of the rotation but I'm gonna give guys a chance to dig themselves out before I move on from anyone.

I think I found a bug I'm at the end of spring training about to send some players down and set my 26 man roster and my rookie players with no service time players like Miguel Amaya and Zack Short options are all 2/3 used.Anyone else have this issue?

Not a bug, that's how Sony put in the minor leaguers this year...the majority only have 1 option.

Eloy is ready to continue towards stardom. I've resigned Edwin Encarnacion to a 2yr deal with player option for the 2nd season. I've sent Madrigal back down to AAA till at least mid season. Luis Robert will start the season as our CF of the future, splitting time with Adam Engel. The only real FA move I've made was signing Puig and adding to our latin flavor in the squad. Expecting 1 more season before I'm truly competing, maybe getting a wildcard spot this season if we are lucky.

Game 1 against the Royals: 2nd pitch of the season for our hitters and Leury Garcia goes yard. His next at bat in the 4th he does it again. 2 HR's to open the season for Garcia and Encarnacion gets one for himself.
We are up 3-0 going into the 5th and looking good. Then KC's bats woke up.... A HR in the 5th by O' Hearn and 2 more runs in the 7th tied it up. Brought Colome in, in the 8th to get us to the 9th....Mistakes were made. Sent him back out in the 9th and gave up a 2 run HR to Salvador Perez. The Royals sent Tim Hill out to close. He gave up 1 hit and struck out 2 to send KC to victory 6-4 in game 1 of 162. A dissapointing loss to a promising season for the Whitesox to say the least. One positive was Luis Robert got his first major league hit in the 7th with a bloop single to right, going 1/4 in the day.
Back at it for game 2 tomorrow.

Game 4 vs Indians: Jace Fry is terrible. I can't pitch with him and have blown 2 leads with him so far. Gave up the lead in the 7th to a winless Cleveland who had Brad Hand shut us down in the 9th to get their first win of the season.

Game 7 vs Red Sox: We took game 1 with a 3 run 7th to win 9-7, even after our closer was hit in the face after getting the first out of the 9th. Brought Jace Fry in to get the last 2 outs and after walking a batter he settled in and finished the save. We scored at least 1 run in every inning except the 1st, 2nd and 9th. In fact in a 4 game series we swept Boston after they started the season 6-1. We are now sitting at 6-3 at the top of the AL Central. Next up is Seattle. Michael Kopech vs Marco Gonzales.

These were very great battles this spring and a few succeed expectation while some just barely made it. One of the biggest surprises was Adbert Alzolay getting the opportunity and running with it. Another bright spot was to see that Jason Kipnis still has alot left in the tank and won a spot on the opening day roster. Nico Hoerner had a great spring but will start the season at triple A with David Bote and Kipnis getting time at second base to start the season. Hernan Perez was everything we had hoped to be our Utility man this season. Ian Happ and Albert Almora will split time in center field this season with the Cubs hoping one of them can break through and be the everyday center fielder they desperately need. Below is a break down of the Opening day Roster the Cubs took into Milwaukee:

                          Opening Day Roster:

                          Starting Rotation:
                          1. Yu Darvish
                          2. Kyle Hendricks
                          3. Jon Lester
                          4. Jose Quintana
                          5. Adbert Alzolay

                          Bullpen:

To start the season we were looking sharp Yu Darvish dominated in his Opening day start. Kyle Hendricks looked sharp as well but we fell short in 13 innings. Jon Lester looked as player of old dominating the brewers for 7 strong in a 10-0 victory. In our home opener we swept the Pirates. The Next series we faced a red hot D-Backs team that would not be denied as they swept us at home, the only bright spot from that series was all the games were decided by 1-2 runs.

Our bright spots so far is Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Kyle Schwarber, and Willson Contreras are all hitting to MVP type players to start the season. David Bote struggled to even record a hit in the first 12 games, so he was optioned to triple A and Nico Hoerner was given a shot and he has not disappointed.

Hope everyone follows this exciting season and many more to come. Sorry so long but alot of info to start the season, I will be updating after every series from here on out.

2020 Chicago Cubs: A Windy City Story:

After being swept at home by a red hot D-Backs team the Cubs would travel to Pittsburg to take on the Pirates in a 4 game series. Games 1 and 2 saw the cubs shut out the Pirates in both games. With the hot start on the quick 4 game road series the Cubs fell to the Pirates in the last two with Hendricks and Lester both suffering their first losses of the season. The 4th game was a nail bitter that saw alot of back and forth between the two teams. with Pirates leading 4-3 in the 9th Perez hits a 1 out double, but the next two batters were un able to drive him in.

Next series up will be a quick 3 game home series against the division rival Cardinals.
                            Pitching Match Up Preview:
Daniel Ponce De Leon(STL) vs Jose Quintana(Cubs)
                            Dakota Hudson(STL) vs Adbert Alzolay(Cubs)

Chicago Cubs VS St. Louis Cardinals Series
The first game of the series started off great seeing Jose Quintana pitching to CY Young caliber. Pitching 7 strong innings giving up 2 runs while striking out 7. Leading the way offensively was Javier Baez and Willson Contreras. The Cardinals would jump out early in the second inning with 1 run, the cubs would answer back with a solo shot from Contreras in the bottom half. Going into the fifth inning the Cardinals were up 2-1, with 2 outs and the bases load the Cubs were threatening. With a full count Baez unloaded a moon shot to clear the bases with a GRAND SLAM!!

In Game two it was a nail bitter that saw alot of back and forth. Cardinals jumped out early on the Cubs with a 2 run second inning. The cubs would battle back and tie the game up in the third. The Cardinals would jump back out front in the fifth and hold the 4-2 lead till the 8th when the Cubs would battle back and take the lead thanks to 2 big home runs. Kimbrel would come in and shut the door in the 9th striking out 3 straight batters.

In finale of the series the Cubs would have a scare in the first inning with Ace Yu Darvish having neck discomfort and ultimately leaving the game after just one out. The Cubs would do all they could, but backed by great pitching they would go on to beat the Cubs 6-4.

Next up will be a quick stop in Baltimore for a two game series followed by a 4 game stop in Washington against the defending World Series Champions.

Sliders Note: No update to the sliders, but after this series, I was more or less happy with the outcomes. I’ve gotten a more balanced timing, but the contact isn’t exactly as desired. I’m still getting “weak” contact fairly often, which is weird considered the team I’m using. And the CPU is still hitting HRs regardless, but not getting enough singles or doubles. Especially when the Twins have a pitcher’s park. But I’ll stick with it til the end of the April games.

                                Team: Minnesota Twins
Record to Date: 5-5, 3rd in ALC
                                Series: vs Athletics

Coming into the series, we had a small winning streak that extended to 4 games until the last game of the series. But Game 1 was all about dominate pitching as Maeda had a no hit bid coming into the 8th. Alas he allowed 2 runs coming off 2 hits, one being a 2 run HR by Khris Davis. Rogers came in for his 3rd consecutive save. Game 2 also had great pitching, but offensively it was backed up by a 4/4 outing by Nelson Cruz who had 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Rich Hill got his first W and allowed one run off of a Chad Pinder HR in the 5th. It was the last game that didn’t go as planned. Homer Bailey was horrendous, allowing 5 solo HRs on 7 hits. Marcus Semien was the PotG, going 4/4 with 2 HRs, 3 RBIs, and 3 Rs. By the end of the 7th, it was 8-2 but the Twins did attempt a comeback. It fell short by 3 runs unfortunately, but Sanó and Gonzalez were able to hit solo HRs. After this outing though, Bailey is on notice and could be replaced by the end of April if he cannot turn it around. Our power lineup isn’t going that well, smacking only 8 HRs in 10 games, good enough for T-24th in the league.

                                Team Rankings:

                                Bat AVG: .279, 8th
                                Hits: 96, 4th
                                Doubles: 17, T-19th
                                Fielding %: .994, 8th
                                ERA: 3.68, 10th
                                HRsA: 19, T-28th
                                Strikeouts: 96, T-1st

The next series will be against the Indians who sit atop the ALC at 7-3.
