The Pirates have won 4 consecutive series post- All Star Break. The team is a season-high 14 games over .500 at 61-47, 3.0 GB of the Reds in the NL Central. We are tied for the top wild card spot with the Diamondbacks, with the Cubs and Braves each 1.0 GB.

The time has come, it’s put up or shut up. This team has exceeded expectations and consistently played competitive baseball all year. A team that was supposed to sit in last place in a very competitive division is in striking distance of its first division crown since 1992. Our destiny is in our hands - we play the Cubs 4 more times and the Reds 8 more times before the season is over. It is now the trade deadline, and we will be going all in to make a run at the postseason.

This is a risky move, but the right one. Josh Bell has two more years under team control before we are priced out of re-signing him. He’s the heart of our offense, no question. Keone Kela has emerged as one of the top relievers in baseball, and will be a free agent this coming offseason. Slim chance we can afford to keep him with the money he will command as a sub-30 flamethrower. We have caught lightning in a bottle this year and can’t let the opportunity escape us.

So we’re going all in for a frontline starter and a shut-down reliever to pair with Kela in the pen. We don’t have a deep farm, but we had a very good draft in 2020 so there is less pressure to call certain prospects untouchable.

    Stay tuned!
We got the big fish we wanted.....

The Pirates have finalized a deal that brings LHP Sean Manaea to Pittsburgh. We had been in talks with the A’s for Manaea for a few weeks now, initially the only suitors. At some point the A’s made him publicly available and basically every team in the race jumped in. The Phillies and Diamondbacks were also close in the running, but in the end we ponied up the best package. It cost us our #2 prospect, and we overpaid a bit, but it’ll be well worth the price if it gets us into the postseason.

    LHP SEAN MANAEA

    UT PABLO REYES

Manaea comes with a checkered injury history, but has been healthy all year and is on pace for his best full season in the majors. He made 22 starts in Oakland, with a 7-9 record, 3.80 ERA, 132 K’s in 135 IP. His WAR of 2.6 is already a career high and his FIP of 3.45 is a career low for a full season. The biggest bonus is that he’s only 28, and is team controllable through 2022. Assuming Jameson Taillon returns to full strength, we have a solid front of the rotation for the next 2 years.

Letting go of Swaggerty was a tough call. The organization drafted him 10th overall in 2018 out of South Alabama and signed him for $4.4 million. At the time of the trade he ranked as our #2 prospect. He’s having a major breakout season, showing emerging power to go with plus speed and at least future average contact skills. He’s a true centerfielder who draws comparisons that fall between Brett Gardner and Grady Sizemore. With Ramon Laureano patrolling centerfield in Oakland for the foreseeable future, Swaggerty most likely fills a corner spot. Potentially as early as mid-season 2021.

Sims, a former first round pick of the Braves, was a waiver claim from Cincinnati at the end of Spring Training. He’s 26 though and controllable through 2024, and was starting to put it together in the majors and pitch in more leverage situations. In 53.1 innings with us this year, he pitched to a respectable 4.03 FIP and tallied 9.45 K/9. He has swing and miss stuff and doesn’t profile as a closer, but should be able to handle a 7th or 8th inning role down the line. Sims would have had a spot on our postseason roster (if we make it), but including him allowed us to keep #4 prospect Braxton Ashcraft.

The 26-year-old Reyes is the last piece. He’s played in 89 games with the Pirates between 2018-2019, slashing .229/.295/.368 in 201 AB’s. He plays multiple positions in the infield and outfield and fits the A’s analytics-driven scouting approach. He spent the year for us at AAA Indianapolis and wasn’t likely part of our long-term plans.

We’re not done with the deadline yet .... we’ll be in the running for one of Ken Giles, Kirby Yates, Sean Doolittle, or Mychal Givens. They’ll all be hot commodities, so no guarantee. We likely don’t have the farm to get much else, but our scouts have been poking around at a few position players that could bolster our bench as we try to go all in for a playoff spot.

      MANIC METS: THE PLAYOFFS

The New York Mets take on the San Diego Padres in a 5 game divisional series.
      Padres @ Mets game 1:

The Mets won 4-1 after a pitchers duel that lasted till the 8th. Jacob deGrom and Lucchesi both went 5 innings giving up 1 run, with Lucchesi having 9 SO's to deGrom's 5. The Padres run came in the 2nd off a solo Dozier Hr, his 3rd in 2 games (2 in the wild card).

The Mets first run came in the 6th inning off a Michael Conforto double. After a severe miscommunication in base running, the Mets ended up only scoring 1 run off the bases loaded double from Conforto after a mishap at 2nd base resulted in a double play.

The Mets were patient throughout with 7 walks including 3 from Urshela. The 3 runs came in the 8th from Urshela, Goodrum and Conforto with Drew Pomeranz taking the loss. Joe Pederson struggled with 3 SO's going 0 for 4 and speculation is rampant he will be benched moving forward for Yoenis Cespedes or Yasiel Puig.

Ryan Pressley took the win and Seth Lugo had the save.

The Mets are now up 1-0 going into the next game. LFGM

Are you happy with the acquisitions of Matt Barnes and Kevin Pillar so far?

Are you considering looking at the FA pool for another reliever with late inning experience like Arodys Vizcaino, Pat Nesheek or Fernando Rodney to bolster the team if you can’t land Giles, Doolittle or Yates through trade?

          Manic Mets:

Mets vs Padres Divisional Series (Mets lead 1-0).

Game 2: The Mets had a near comeback after being down 5-0 to start the game, but it wasn't enough as the Padres won it 9-6. Noah Syndergaard gave up 5 runs in the first inning but managed to pitch 7 innings going scoreless besides then. Despite 2 HR's from Pete Alonso it was not enough, as the Padres scored 4 runs in the 9th inning to break up the tie.

          Series is tied 1-1.

Game 3: The Mets blew a bad one after being up 5-0 in the 5th inning to lose it 6-5 in 9 innings. Things were running smoothly till Corey Kluber of the Mets gave up 4 runs in the 6th off a 3 run HR from Brian Dozier.

A tough loss sets up a must win game 4.

Game 4: The Mets on the brink of elimination managed to pull one way leading wall to wall for the win 4-2. They were steadied by a Niko Goodrum 3 run HR in the 3rd inning as Andrew Heaney took the win. Garret Richards of the Padres only went 4 innings giving up 3 runs.

An elimination game awaits both teams with the series tied 2-2.

Game 5: With 2 outs and the bases loaded down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, Michael Conforto hit the biggest grand slam of his career, winning the game and moving to the Mets on to the NLCS. The Mets win 7-4 and will take on the Dodgers in the NLCS.

It will go down as one of the best games in Mets history.

The Mets were down 4-2 going into the bottom of the 9th and scored 5 runs to win it in the most remarkable comeback since the 1986 game 6 win against the Red Sox.

Jacob deGrom was an utter workhorse, refusing to come out of the game pitching 9 innings for 4 ER's and 18 strike outs. Despite rocky innings in the 5th and 8th (giving up 2 runs each) he took the win. Kirby Yates took the loss going only 1/3rd of an inning for 3 runs.

deGrom passed Bob Gibson for most strikeouts in a playoff game (17).

          --
After a fantastic win, the Mets face their toughest test of the season. A 7 game series with the powerhouse Dodgers.

Thanks man! Barnes got hit around a bit in his first appearance for us, but in his last 2 he stranded some inherited runners. So far so good.

Pillar has had two huge clutch hits already - a pinch hit bases-loaded single off Brent Suter in Milwaukee and a 3-run homer off Joey Lucchesi in San Diego (in a game we won 3-0). As long as he continues to wreck lefties he’s filling his role for us.

At this stage I’ll definitely go and get a reliever via trade. If I can’t get one of the big guys I’ll still look for a Joakim Soria (or someone like that). Anyone sitting in the FA pool still has regressed quite a bit by now.

              PITTSBURGH PIRATES FRANCHISE

              2020 Trade Deadline Update

So we whiffed on the big-ticket relievers unfortunately. Here’s where they landed:

The Rays pulled a surprising move by landing Giles. In exchange they sent RHP prospect Riley O’Brien and outfielder Dylan Cozens to Toronto, in addition to another low-minors pitching prospect. Cozens is having a breakout year in AAA and O’Brien is a potential mid-rotation starter. Rays are 5.0 out from the wild card so they’re going to try to make a run.

We did engage in serious talks with the Padres for Yates, but ultimately passed. Their asking price was far too high for a rental in my opinion. He ended up with the Dodgers in exchange for 2019 first-rounder Michael Busch and RHP Dennis Santana.

Doolittle also went to the Dodgers for 1B Matt Beaty. Dodgers have an unreal pitching staff now from top to bottom. Buehler, Kershaw, Price, Alex Wood, Jansen, Yates, Treinen, Doolittle ... they’re going to be scary in the playoffs.

Mychal Givens went to Philly for RHP Adonis Medina.

So we missed the boat on a big-time bullpen arm. We’ll now turn our attention to a budget bullpen arm, hopefully a lefty who can back up Robbie Erlin who’s been very solid all year.

Several position players are still on the market, including Marcus Semien, Khris Davis, and Salvador Perez. We’ll be in on Davis and Perez but most likely priced out of Semien.

The Giants are also looking to deal some of their starting pitchers (Samardzija, Smyly, Gausman, maybe Cueto) .... we’ll have a look but I’m not sure any of them are better than the guys we already have.

Same here. I’ll bring in a starter or my long reliever a lot of times I go into extras. I’ll go with whoever was scheduled to start the next day and my long reliever is always my “6th” starter. I’ll bring in one of them if I go to extras.

Yankees Drop 2 Of 3 to Royals, Drop Game 1 @ Red Sox

After winning 9 straight the Yankees have finally cooled as we’ve entered a 3 game skid losing 2 out of 3 to KC by scores of 9-8, 8-12, and 4-11. And 3-4 to Boston. We still sit at 48-22, in first place over the Blue Jays by 7.5 games.

Only a day after shifting JA Happ to the bullpen following German’s return from suspension, James Paxton would leave his start with a strained pectoral. The strain will cost him a start meaning Happ will follow up Cole for game 3 @ Boston in Paxton’s place.

Yankees Reportedly In Talks With FA SP James Shields
We’re looking to add another option to shuffle between the majors and minors as a LR when we need a fresh arm to slide into that role. The former Rays pitcher has pretty much been a workhorse his entire career. He once put up 9 straight years of 200+ IP and 30+ start seasons. His best being 2011 as a Ray pitching to a 2.82 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 249.1 IP. He was a lot less effective along the way, but he did break the 200 IP barrier again as recently as 2018. He’s also the pitcher responsible for giving us the legendary Bartolo Colon HR.

Those kind of days are likely behind the 38 year old, but deploying him in limited action could make him more effective again and keep him healthy with all the innings already on his arm. No overpowering velocity, but he does still have solid control and sharp break on his pitches. After not pitching in 2019, a good showing in a limited role with us could potentially help prolong his career.

                    Next up:
2 more games @ Boston and then an off day before a brief 2 game stop in Pittsburgh at beautiful PNC Park.

                    News:
Yankees DJ LeMahieu Set To Return In 1-6 days.
He’s likely out for the final 2 games @ Boston, but expect him to return to the field as we take on the Pirates.

Twins Riding 12 Game Win Streak, Take Best Record From Yankees
The scorching hot Twins are now at 49-23, one game up on us for the best record in baseball. The losses of Miguel Sano and Rich Hill for the year have not slowed them down at all.

                      The Amazin's

                      Oct 1, 2023

I wanted to get back to updating my 'chise that I started back in 2016. I just reached the playoffs of the 2023 season, so I figured now was as good a time as any to do so.

Your 2023 Mets finished the season with the best record in the majors, 102-60, and clinched the NL East for the sixth time in seven years. The team's 102 wins is the most since 2020 when they won 101 games and lost in the NLCS to the Pirates.

This year, the Mets were led by 3B Rafael Devers. The NL MVP and Triple Crown winner slashed .341/.393/.684 with 45 HR and 135 RBI. Devers is entering the last month of his contract before his first taste of free agency, so this is probably his last chance to bring another title to NY. His infield partner, SS Amed Rosario, is also on the last year of his deal. Both Devers and Rosario have been integral parts of a core that has won three titles since 2019, and both are likely to playing elsewhere next season.

OF Eloy Jiminez won the NL ROY slashing .266/.349/.491 with 25 HR and 89 RBI. He was signed this off-season after the Cubs decided to non-tender him. A criminally bad decision on their part, and part of the reason they missed out on the playoffs this year.

Before we get to what the playoff bracket looks like - a glimpse at the 2023 Mets and the roster we'll be moving forward with for the postseason.

                      Lineup
                      2B Gene Worley - .322/.367/.410 with 4 HR and 29 RBI in 339 AB
                      SS Amed Rosario - .284/.327/.399 with 9 HR, 37 2B, 63 RBI in 644 AB
                      LF Michael Conforto - .298/.390/.556 with 25 HR, 54 2B, 101 RBI in 516 AB
                      3B Rafael Devers - .341/.393/.684 with 45 HR, 50 2B, 135 RBI in 545 AB
                      CF Eloy Jiminez - .266/.349/.491 with 25 HR, 33 2B, 89 RBI in 489 AB
                      RF Braxton Davidson - .279/.320/.444 with 16 HR, 36 2B, 79 RBI in 523 AB
                      C Jonathan Lucroy - .270/.340/.423 with 10 HR, 26 2B, 51 RBI in 381 AB
                      1B DJ Peterson - .226/.339/.361 with 7 HR, 33 RBI in 310 AB

                      Bench
OF Ramon Rosas - .303/.362/.390 with 3 HR, 27 RBI in 267 AB
                      1B Steven Logan - .283/.329/.531 with 10 HR, 20 RBI in 145 AB
                      SS Richard Urena - .256/.306/.472 with 13 HR, 23 2B, 45 RBI in 316 AB
                      C Harmon Rodriguez - .205/.305/.251 with 0 HR, 17 RBI in 259 AB
OF Alex Jackson - .251/.320/.419 with 8 HR, 40 RBI in 215 AB
                      3B Walter Sato - .298/.341/413 with 1 HR, 15 RBI in 121 AB

The lineup is pretty set day to day. There isn't a lot of platooning going on since most of the lineup is productive against either side of the rubber. The only exception would be Steven Logan in for DJ Peterson at first base if the Mets wanted a left-handed bat against a RHP.

                      Rotation
                      RHP Noah Syndergaard - 10-7, 2.88 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 200 K in 200 IP
                      RHP Walker Buehler - 12-6, 3.81 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 136 K in 181.2 IP
                      RHP Dave Monahan - 14-7, 3.09 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 119 K in 192 IP
                      RHP Jacob deGrom - 13-9, 5.01 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 91 K in 138.1 IP

                      Bullpen
                      RHP Robert Gsellman - 8-8, 5.05 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 81 K in 135.1 IP
                      RHP Jared Eickhoff - 7-5, 2.70 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 37 K in 63.1 IP
                      RHP Dakota Chalmers - 7-3, 2.77 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 53 K in 55.1 IP
                      RHP Kelvin Herrera - 5-5, 4.12 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 63 K in 67.2
                      LHP Steven Vaccaro - 8-2, 3.04 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 55 K in 71 IP
                      RHP Julio Alvarez - 1-3, 2.04 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 58 K in 70.2 IP
                      LHP Dan Shoemaker - 7-3, 1.70 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 75 K in 79.1 IP
                      RHP Nick Burdi - 5-3, 48/53 saves, 2.88 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 71 K in 72 IP

This is how the four-man rotation and bullpen is penciled in heading into the postseason. Robert Gsellman lost his spot in the rotation to rookie Dakota Chalmers midway through August, and deGrom has struggled all season as father time starts to creep up on him. The good news is that Chalmers has shown tons of promise and looks to be an answer in the rotation moving forward. It wouldn't shock me if Chalmers found himself making his first career postseason start this year with deGrom moving to the bullpen.

The Mets are hopeful that they can make a run at a World Series title this year, but the rotation is certainly a question mark. With Gsellman and deGrom struggling all season and Chalmers being a rookie, there are serious questions about who gets the ball on day 4. It might have to be done by committee, which puts a lot of pressure on Syndergaard, Buehler, and Monahan to deliver quality performances when they're called upon.

                      2023 Playoff Bracket

                      National League
                      Reds v Dodgers
Mets v Marlins (Defeated the Nationals in the WC)

Game 1 of the NLDS between the Mets and Marlins will feature Syndergaard vs Jered Si. Si has been the Marlins Ace for the last decade, and was 5-3 in an injury-shortened season. He sported a 3.24 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 80 K in 89 IP.

                      American League
                      Royals v Blue Jays
Astros v Mariners (Defeated the Rays in the WC)

The Mets are looking to win their third World Series in as many years. Something that hasn't been done since the Yankees did it in the late nineties.

                      Time for some playoff baseball!!

The Cubs have a lot to prove in 2025. Coming off a season where they missed the playoffs the Cubs reloaded and made a splash in free agency to help push the team back into contention. Simply put, it worked wonderful in April.

Juan Soto had 5HR in the first 4 games of the year and never cooled down. Juan Soto won NL player of the month with a .381AVG/15HR/29RBI in 31 games. What a start for the new Cub. Baez’s production has shown improvement with Soto hitting behind him. Baez in April went .319AVG/9HR/21 RBI in 29 games. Every hitter in the lineup has been respectable outside of Kyle Schwarber who usually has represented consistency, but Is hitting .158AVG in the month.

The rotation has done well, with everybody pitching to a sub 3.50ERA, and the bullpen has been great as well. CP Clyde Booker had 13SV in April with a 1.23ERA.

Overall, for the first time in a long while the Cubs had an amazing start to the season going 24-7 in April, and find themselves 3.5 games above the Brewers in the NL central. Lets see if the Cubs can keep it up after a record first 31 games.

More recent highlights from my Red Sox franchise:

Ryan O'Hearn of the Royals hits a walk off HR in the 9th to give the Royals a 4-2 win and avoid the sweep

JD Martinez hits a big two run game tying HR in the 8th inning at Toronto in a game Boston would eventually win in 11 innings

Alex Verdugo hits a grand slam down the RF line at Toronto to start a big comeback as the Sox were down 6-1 and would pull to within a run at 6-5 before Mitch Moreland followed a few batters later with a 2-run bomb into the second deck in RF as the Red Sox would go on to score 7 runs in the inning.

                              2020 Trade Deadline Update #2

No new deals for the Pirates as of yet, but here are some of the significant deals from around the league:

Salvador Perez to Houston for RHP Rogelio Armenteros and SS Freudis Nova. We were in on Perez but passed due to the contract and asking price.

Daniel Norris to Cubs for RHP Ryan Jensen and 3B Christopher Morel

Jonathan Schoop to Yankees for RHP’s Domingo German and Albert Abreu

CJ Cron to Phillies for RHP Enyel de los Santos

Andrew Miller to Diamondbacks for 1B Kevin Cron

Daniel Murphy to Reds for 2B Tyler Callihan. Votto tore his ACL in April and has been out since.

Johnny Cueto to Yankees for RHP Jonathan Loaisiga. He’ll need a haircut.

Kevin Gausman to White Sox for C Seby Zavala.

We had an offer on the table for Joakim Soria but backed out. His ERA is below 4 but FIP above 5 and negative WAR. Peripherals scared me off. A’s decided to stick it to us by trading him to the Cubs.

Then they stuck it to us again by trading Khris Davis to the Dodgers. We really needed a power bat. The Dodgers depth is just disgusting at this point. They have the best record in the majors and are the odds-on favorites to win the World Series.

                              And one BIG blockbuster:

Marcus Semien to Cleveland for SS Brayan Rocchio, 1B/OF Jake Bauers and RHP James Karinchak.

The Indians hold a 2-game lead in the AL central and are now favorites to win the division with a nightmare middle infield combo of Lindor and Semien. They’re going all in to end the drought.

The A’s add another top prospect to a farm system that will rank among the best in the game after this season.

More deals to come. We are close on a deal with the Marlins that would bring Jonathan Villar to Pittsburgh. Their asking price is uncomfortably high but we’re determined to get it done.

The Rangers are 53-56 and are said to be making Corey Kluber available. He’s not having a good year but will be well sought-after I think.

I absolutely love the game and play exclusively franchise every year 162 games on quick pitch for years. One thing I'd like to try and have somehow, would be to incorporate the feature of "live rosters" for each actual game, into that corresponding game in franchise mode. Maybe it could be done in monthly increments? i.e. after April ends in MLB, the daily rosters and lineups could be downloaded to use in April franchise games. After April games in franchise are played, you have the option of continuing on from there, doing everything manually, or waiting for the next months download, then continuing on. This could even be a premium feature. I would gladly pay like 20-$25 for a year subscription. No more having to tinker with rosters and lineups and rotations etc to get realism. Not sure if this is possible, or been suggested before, would be pretty cool IMO.
