Re: MLB The Show 20 PS5

Finally finished my MTO with Cleveland, losing to the Yankees in the ALCS in six games. I started it so long ago but didn't have the impetus to finish it until the PS5. Still, I'm so glad to be done with it as I used dynamic difficulty and Legend hitting is not for me. I managed to stay competitive once I got there, but it was almost exclusively by hitting mistakes for bombs. I'd much rather play HOF and tweak sliders a little as needed.

Now that the Pirates are completely blown up I'm kinda tempted to start a what if franchise and go a different direction. It's probably going to be hard to watch much of the real team for a few years so maybe the usual issue of trying to keep it real won't matter. [emoji57]

I finally got a console yesterday, while the show is an improvement it's very slight and you guys have been pumping the tires way too much. For anyone who is suffering for not getting a PS5 yet mainly for this game, chill it's not that diff from PS4, wait til April or whenever 21 drops.
Also before someone chimes in, yes I play on 4K HDR sharper mode with resolution mode.

Just bc you don't see a big difference doesn't mean the rest of us don't. The fact that the game plays so much smoother on PS5 and in 4k at that, is a big difference bc the PS4 Pro could hardly do 4k at 30fps. So yeah, it's a big difference from that standpoint

Sounds like you expected a brand new experience which I don't think anyone claimed. Everyone was just excited to see the game running great at a solid 4K60fps with no issues and the possibilities of a what that means for the first Show game meant for PS5. It's still just a PS4 game running in BC mode at the end of the day.

Nope, PS4 pro if you chose not sharper but balanced would be primarily (70% or so) at 60 fps.

This is the last time I'll post about this to avoid the topic being shutdown.
It's just my opinion just like some of you think it's some next gen experience, I just disagree.

            MLB 21 here we come.

I don't think you're way out in left field with the point you're making, as it is still the same game at the end of the day. But going from 1080p and choppy on the base PS4 to 4k AND 60fps was quite a jump for my Show experience. But yeah, if you had a Pro it's going to much less impressive.

Maybe I'm just easily impressed[emoji1787] I went from playing on balanced mode from my PS4 Pro to 4k60 on PS5 and I could tell a huge difference. Even on balanced mode on my pro I would get framerate dips quite a bit but it's been nothing but smooth sailing on the PS5. Everyone is going to have a different experience bc we all don't look for the same things as each other, and what may be a big leap to me, may not be a big leap to someone else. But one thing I'm sure we can all agree on, the PS5 is an awesome console and I can't wait for The Show this year on it!

I concur with this. I played The Show on a PS4 Pro and a really nice 4K TV...and even in faster mode I'd still see plenty of framerate hiccups. It always drove me crazy.

Now playing the same game on PS5, it runs so smooth at 4K60 it's amazing. It really is such a big difference.

I'm sensitive to frame rate issues and sharper mode was unplayable for me on last gen.

On PS5 I have yet to even see a hiccup. It also does look better but not a massive improvement. The no stutter or hiccups thing is the real winner though and makes a huge difference.

Even the the little stutter that would happen when user Sounds of the Show audio cues kick in are gone.

I’m expecting MLB21 to support at least ray tracing what for sure PS4 can’t support. NBA2k21 is supporting it so no reason MLB can’t. It will give an instant visual improvement.

That’s the fastest quick-win for PS5 games to support. It’s hardware related more than anything else.

What can ray tracing really add to The Show though? I mean basketball has shiny court floors which reflects the stadium lights and all but baseball has grass and dirt...

Also, the one big thing that would scare me with ray tracing, is that we wouldn't get 60fps with it. For me personally, I don't think ray tracing is needed for The Show. It's already a beautiful game without it. And I would much rather have them update things visually without the use of ray tracing. I mean, I guess as long as they still have the graphics options we can choose from like we do now is be okay with it. But RT relies so much on hardware I'd hate to see the fps suffer just to add it in. After playing this game in 60fps at 4k, I can never go back.

Ray tracing is a technic to trace the path of light and simulate the way that the light interacts with objects. It’s not to just make objects shiny and nice reflection on a puddle ;-)

It allows for dramatically more lifelike shadows and reflections along with much-improved translucence and scattering.

Shadows is the most obvious effect we can perceive but subsurface scattering is a technic to let some light going trough a surface like skin, foliage (grass here would highly benefit from that) and even uniforms.

NBA is always inside under a controlled stable light. Baseball, for most, is outside with day-night transitions with sunny to cloudy to overcast-rainy lighting conditions. A playground for Ray tracing.

Call of Duty is now using it for the single mode ( not in multiplayer tho) and it makes a subtile difference that can add to realism....mostly on close-ups.

As Archie56 said, framerate can be an issue but this is a case by case problem.

Ok fair enough but if you ask me they first have to upgrade all the fields with proper 3d grass and high res dirt textures before we talk ray tracing. While they’re at it maybe start with rain that actually creates some puddles on the field to begin with or weather that can change between sun and rainfall.

Man, I am just eating up any and all talk about MLB on PS5. With football season winding down (go Chiefs!), my attention is about to fully shift to the upcoming baseball season and I’m just so dang giddy to see what SCEA has in store for us. I understand it takes a few years to hit stride, but I’m excited to see what they’re able to do what all that extra power in year one.
