    Baseball, man.
He homered in each of the next two games of the series too. I’m fully expecting him to demand a trade to the Mets so he can play all his games at Citi Field

Max Scherzer strikes out 6 in Spring debut

Max Scherzer struck out 6 batters over 3 innings of work in his first spring start of the new year against the defending World Series Champion Mets.

Scherzer only needed 33 pitches to get through the 3 innings of work, striking out the 6 hitters, allowing zero hits and zero walks.

Scherzer struck out 4 in a row after striking out the final two in the 2nd and the first two of the 3rd inning.

Hopefully Scherzer can keep this pace going over the course of 30+ starts this upcoming season.

        End of Season - 2022

If this team had been in a playoff spot on September 17th. The following 3 weeks would have become one of the worst choke jobs in baseball history. Instead, it's simply a complete and utter joke. September 9th was 1 month left in the season. We won that day game putting us at 69-67 and 2 games back of the Blue Jays for the 2nd Wild Card spot. 1 week later we were 72-71 still 2 games back this time to the Angels after losing the 1st Wild Card to the Jays. With 19 games left, we would go on to win just 3 more. Hunter Dozier missed 15 of the games. We lost 11 in a row at one point while the team finished 75-87 and 4th in the division.

        Standings
        Spoiler

Offensively the 2nd half of the season went much like the first half. Slowly getting worse game by game. We finished the season hitting .246/.315/.391 (24th, 21st, and 25th in the league). We were 25th in Runs with 622. 21st in Doubles with 250, tied for 7th with 34 Triples, tied for 27th in Home Runs with 160, and 20th in Walks with 526. We only struck out 1073 times. 1 less than the Mets for the league lead. And we were 4th in Stolen Bases with 125 while having the best success rate at 71.4%. Those numbers would have been better but we ended up losing Ohtani for the season on August 20th. Suffering a Fractured Forearm against the Yankees.

        Offensive Stats
        Spoiler

With Ohtani going down and Hunter Dozier only playing in 106 games id have to give the team MVP to Carlos Santana. He hit .267/.352/.437 with 25 HR and 84 RBI. Aside from his performance down the stretch the rest of the offense just couldn't do anything. Over the last 6-8 weeks Bobby Witt Jr ended up being the 2nd best hitter. Called up on August 15th he hit .266/.309/.462 with 6 HR and 21 RBI in 169 AB. Mondesi was also a tad bit better. Enough to get his numbers higher than they were last season but still not at all close to what we need from him. He finished the season at .223/.279/.336 with 4 HR and 12 SB. And Ryan O'hearn came up swinging for the fences after Dozier went down. In 48 AB he hit 5 HR with a line of .208/.350/.583 after hitting 23 HR in AAA. As for guys that didn't perform at all near the end of the season. Whit Merrifield put up the lowest AVG, OBP, and SLG of his career at .238/.305/.375 after hitting .258/.327/.413 heading into the All-Star Break. Even worse is Salvador Perez finishing the season at .232/.278/.375. I'm not sure he got a hit in the 2nd half after hitting .269/.309/.451 in the first half. It was very much not a good ending to the season and with the performance of some of our guys next season doesn't seem like it will be all that easy to improve.

The pitching actually managed to improve ever so slightly as the season went on. It could have been better with Ohtani but we still finished with a 4.08 ERA good for 16th in the league. We were tied for 8th with 14 Shutouts, 15th in HR allowed with 192, and finished 8th in Strikeouts with 1294. Blown Saves were an issue giving up 22 tieing us for 22nd in the league and Walks were no better giving up 604 which also placed us 22nd.

        Pitching Stats
        Spoiler

Danny Duffy continued his late-career resurgence throwing the most innings of his career with a 3.43 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. With Ohtani going down he ended up leading the team in Strikeouts with 150. Brad Keller was the best starter down the stretch finishing with a 3.13 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and lowest HR/9 in the league. We did struggle to find a reliable 5th/6th starter. Kowar finished with a 5.01 ERA, Brady Singer was sent to the bullpen for the last month of the season. He had a 5.37 ERA at the time and finished at 5.02. And Asa Lacy was called up in August after putting up a 3.10 ERA in AAA. It didn't translate to the majors as he ended the season with a 5.20 ERA over 45 IP.

The bullpen ended up being decent after struggling in the 1nst half. We acquired Colin Poche from the Rays at the trade deadline. He was in AAA until we traded for him. In 22.2 innings for us, he put up a 2.78 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with a 14.69 K/9 and an extremely low FIP of 0.62. Zimmers ERA dropped from 6.20 to 4.50 thanks to a 2.96 ERA over his last 27.1 IP. Rolando Gunn was the most consistent guy out of the pen. No major slumps and finished with a 3.38 ERA as a rookie.

        Royals Minor League Leaders
        Spoiler

Carlos Mitre was our 3rd round pick last season. I said at the time that his bat was as good as anyone in the draft and he proved me right. Hitting .299/.379/.484 between AA and AAA (90% of his at-bats were in AA). I wouldn't rule out him starting 2023 in the Majors. Carlos Santana more than likely won't be back so with Ohtani at DH he would be forced to play at 1st and his glove is not ready at all but his bat might force us to have him learn as he goes.

Our last pick of the 2021 draft was SP Billy Romero. I said at the time I didn't think he would be more than a long reliever. He seems to have taken that and used it as motivation so far. Spent all season in AA putting up a 2.07 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He didn't struggle as much with the Walks like I thought he would but the strikeouts were definitely low. But with the defensive talent that we could possibly have when he is ready to debut, he could strike out no one and be good. Still think his stamina will be an issue going forward but so far so good.

Our Triple-A Team the Omaha Storm Chasers had a good season going 77-65. Unfortunately, they finished 1 game behind the Louisville Bats and missed the playoffs. Our AA team the North West Arkansas Naturals were just a tiny bit better. Or as some would say the best team in AA. 78 total wins on the season, ending with the 2nd title in team history. The last time they won was in 2010 with Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, and Danny Duffy on the team.

        Post Season
        Spoiler

Mike Matheny will not be returning as Manager. His contract expired and after that performance to end the season it's time to go in a new direction. Pitching Coach Cal Eldred will also not be back with his contract expiring as well. Hitting Coach Giuseppe Hayward has 2 years left on his deal but is very much on the hot seat. If there is a coach out there that blows me away I wont hesitate to move on after only 1 season.

As for the players, Whit Merrifield, Andrew Benintendi, and Carlos Santana are our only free agents. Whit is expected to want around 7-8 million a year. At 34 and 2 straight seasons of below-average play im not sure yet what to do with him. He definitely won't be getting a qualifying offer. But I could see us going with a 2-year deal and a mutual option. Benintendi was better than last year. Missed a little time with injuries but with a projected cost of 6-8 million, I expect to have him back next season. And last we have Carlos Santana who at 36 will more than likely not be back. He had a good season but you can tell age is starting to affect him. And with Carlos Mitre playing well in the minors and Hunter Dozier being a much better 1B than DH I think its best to move on sooner rather than later.

Getting a Starting Pitcher is probably #1 on our list of priorities in free agency. Struggling to find a guy at the back of the rotation and Ohtani still not able to play a whole season has possibly cost us the playoffs the last 2 years. If Whit doesn't return a middle infielder could be a need as well. Im not feeling as optimistic about the immediate future like I was last season. Hopefully, things go our way this offseason and my outlook improves. But the end of 2022 was about as bad as I have ever seen.

ROYALS TAKE 2 OF 3 AGAINST THE ANGELS

The Royals bats were quiet over the last two games of the series. In game two of the series, Brad Keller once again exited early. He went only 3 innings, getting rocked for five runs on eight hits, leaving the game with a flexor strain. Dozier drove in a run, and Nicky Lopez drove in two more but the Royals fell 8-3 in the ugliest game they’ve played in all. They recorded just four hits while also not being able to pitch effectively.

In the deciding game of the series Danny Duffy gave them 6.1 innings of one run baseball and the bullpen continued to be lights out. The offense was once again poor. They got a first inning HR from Andrew Benintendi but that was all they could muster in the first nine innings.

In extras, the Angels had a chance to break it open with the bases load and one out, but Kyle Zimmer got a big pop up and strikeout to keep it tied.

In the bottom of the tenth, Dyson got a sac bunt down moving Erick Mejia to third, and Whit Merrifield singled back up the middle to give the Royals the second walkoff of the series, moving them to 7-4.

The offense is really struggling with the injury to Alaberto Mondesi coupled with Merrifield, Perez, and Dozier really struggling. The only consistent force in the lineup has been Carlos Santana, who is hitting .342 with 6 HRs and 15 RBI. They have to hope they can get good pitching and find ways to push a few runs across.

The Royals will now host the Blue Jays for four games at Kauffman Stadium.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

Starting pitching was the story in each game as the Padres take two of three from the Cubs at home.

                Yu Darvish's last two starts, both vs the Cubs: 14.1ip 8h 20k 2bb 3er.

                Game one: Padres (6 11 2) vs Cubs (1 4 0)

                W- Y. Darvish (5-2) 7.1ip 3h 11k 1bb 1er
                L- T. Williams (3-4) 5ip 8h 2k 0bb 4er
                HRs- M. Machado (15), J. Profar (6), W. Myers (6), T. Pham (4)
PotG- SP Yu Darvish; 7.1ip with 11 strikeouts, a season high for Padres pitchers. Just a true pitching gem from him.

                Game two: Padres (0 6 1) vs Cubs (6 10 1)

                W- K. Hendricks (6-4) 8ip 5h 8k 2bb 0er
                L- J. Musgrove (6-4) 5ip 7h 4k 2bb 4er
                HRs- J. Pederson (18), N. Hoerner (2), I. Haap (16)
PotG- SP Kyle Hendricks; 8ip with 8 strikeouts. Really mixed up his sinker and changeup on me, kept the ball low and had Padres hitters off balance all night. Truly an outstanding performance from him.

                Game three: Padres (3 4 0) vs Cubs (0 3 0)

                W- M. Clevinger (7-2) 6ip 2h 5k 1bb 0er
                L- Z. Davies (5-4) 6ip 4h 3k 1bb 3er
                Sv- R. Osuna (8)
                HRs- None
                PotG- SP Mike Clevinger

                ~~Injury news~~

•Indians SP Shane Bieber comes off the IL. Only made two starts this season before the injury. Optioned SP Logan Allen.

                Up next: Padres (39-25, 2nd NLW, 5gb, 5-5 last 10) @ Mets (32-29, 3rd NLE, 3.5gb, 6-4 last 10)

                Game one: B. Snell (0-1 4.86era 12k) vs C. Carrasco (1-4 4.99era 79k)

~Blake Snell making his return from injury. This will be only his 3rd start of the season.

                Game two: Y. Darvish (5-2 3.09era 76k) vs N. Syndergaard (4-3 4.19era 62k)

~Darvish looking to continue his dominant performance in June and make his push for the Allstar team.

~Syndergaard looks to bounce back vs the Padres. His last start vs these same Padres he allowed 6 hits only 1 strikeout and 4 earned runs only lasting 4.2ip

                Game three: C. Paddack (1-1 2.66era 21k) vs M. Stroman (5-4 5.16era 62k)

~Dinelson Lamet will miss his scheduled start with minor injury. Paddack will get his 5th start of the season. Paddack, who was recalled when Snell went down earned his spot as LRP while Weathers was optioned down to AAA when Snell returned.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

ROYALS ALTERNATE WINS TO SPLIT SERIES WITH JAYS

                      Game one:
                      WP: K. Yates (1-1)
                      LP: J. Staumont (0-1)
                      S: R. Dolis (1)

                      Starting pitchers
                      M. Minor: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 hits, 4k, 1BB
                      R. Ray: 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 hits, 5k, 2BB

The Royals got a decent start out of Mike Minor and led 3-2 headed to the 7th inning on the backs of Merrifield, Alberto, and Santana RBIs. The bullpen which had been outstanding thus far this season though would have a rough outing. Scott Barlow would enter the game in the top of the seventh and give up the tying solo HR to Randal Grichuk.

Zimmer and Holland would pitch scoreless 8th and 9th innings but the Royals could not find a run. In the top of the 10th Josh Staumont found himself in a jam for the first time this season, but the Royals trusted him to get himself out of it. After loading the bases with one out, he gave up a sac fly to Lourdes Gurriel to take a 4-3 lead, which proved to hold up.

                      Game two:
                      WP: J. Junis (3-0)
                      LP: R. Dolis (0-1)

                      Starting pitchers:
                      B. Singer: 7 IP, 7 hits, 4 ER, 5k, 2BB
                      S. Matz: 5 IP, 3 ER, 3 hits, 4k, 1BB

Slumping Whit Merrifield led game two off with a double and was driven in by Hanser Alberto. Walks to Salvador Perez and Jorge Soler loaded the bases for Carlos Santana, who stayed hit with a single that scored two. It was a quick first inning lead for the Royals.

Brady Singer gave it all back though in the top of the second, giving up a two run double for George Springer and an RBI single for Teoscar Hernandez.

In the fifth inning, Calvin Biggio got a hanging sinker and blasted it over the left field wall to put the Blue Jays out front 4-3.

Headed to the bottom of the 7th, Salvador Perez led off with a walk, then Santana singled. A throwing error by Alejandro Kirk advanced the runners to second and third, and Ryan McBroom singled them both home to reclaim the lead 5-4. With McBroom advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch, the Royals pinch hit for Edward Olivares with struggling Michael Taylor. It paid off as he ripped a ball into the right field gap scoring McBroom, and the Royals were ahead 6-4.

In the ninth, Josh Staumont came into close the game a night after having his only rough outing. He didn’t have control of his fastball in this one, walking the first two men he faced. Determined to let him work his way through it, the Blue Jays kept the pressure on. A seeing eye single followed by a bloop single tied the game. Staumont had lost his first game the night prior and now blown his first save. The Royals would then turn to Kyle Zimmer to keep it tied, and he struck out Springer and Gurriel to send it to the bottom of the ninth 6-6.

The Royals could not find a walk off hit so once again the Royals would go to extras. Jakob Junis would get the ball and after a couple fly balls he got the strikeout of Grichuk to end the Jays chance.

Nicky Lopez pulled the ball to the second baseman to start the inning, allowing Dozier to make it to third with one out, and then Michael Taylor singles to left field and the Royals win in extras 7-6.

                      Game three:
                      WP: H. Ryu (2-1)
                      LP: K. Bubic (0-1)
                      SP: K. Yates (6)

Hyun-Jin Ryu was terrific, striking out seven Royals hitters and pitching 7 scoreless innings before turning it over to Romano and Yates, each throwing a scoreless inning. The Royals were shut out for the first time this season. Kris Bubic was good, going 5.2 innings of two run baseball but got no help from the offense.

Jorge Soler was making his first start in the field, allowing Salvador Perez to use the DH spot, but in the third inning chasing a ball on the gap, he would come up lame with a pulled back muscle and have to exit the game. He is day to day, but it doesn’t look like he will need to go to the IL.

The Blue Jays got RBIs from Biggio, Grichuk, and Panik and won 3-0.

                      Game four:
                      WP: B. Keller (1-2)
                      LP: R. Stripling (1-2)

Coming into his 4th start of the season with a 0-2 record and 9.00 era, it was a huge start for Brad Keller to see if he could make strides in turning around his season.

Keller would give up lead off doubles in the first two innings and a lead off walk in the third, but would work around all the trouble, holding the Jays scoreless through three. In the fourth however he would give up back to back one out doubles Gurriel and Vlad Guerrero Jr. to fall behind 1-0 as the Royals offense once again looked lost.

Ross Stripling cruised through 4 innings for the Blue Jays, allowing only one hit, but the in the fifth inning he ran into a lot of trouble. Hunter Dozier led off the inning with a triple and Cam Gallagher drove him in with a one out opposite field single to tie it at 1-1. Edward Olivares would bloop a single into left field, and then Whit Merrifeld would hit his second HR of the single, a three run shot into the left field seats. The Royals go ahead 4-1.

Neither team would threatened to score again until the Royals added another run in the 8th, a Michael Taylor RBI single, making it a non save situation.

Had it remained a save situation, Kyle Zimmer would have came in, but with a 4 run fusion and at only 92 pitches, Brad Keller would come back to the mound and get the Blue Jays in order to get the complete game victory. Brad Keller lowered his ERA from 9.00 to 5.72, earning his first victory and saving the bullpen for the day.

After splitting the series, the Royals are now 9-6, third in the ALC.

                      Standings:
                      1. Twins 12-4
                      2. White Sox 11-6 (1-5 GB)
                      3. Royals 9-6 (2.5 GB)
                      4. Indians 8-7 (3.5 GB)
                      5. Tigers 7-9 (5.0 GB)

The Royals will finish the home stand with three against the 6-10 Tampa Rays.

                      Pitching matchups:
                      D. Duffy (1-1) vs R. Yarbrough (0-2)

ROYALS TAKE 2 of 3 VS TAMPA RAYS; LOSE MORE THAN A GAME
                        WP: D. Duffy (2-1)
                        LP: R. Yarbrough (0-3)
                        S: K. Zimmer (1)

Game one of the series was quite the pitching duel. On the first pitch of the game, Joey Wendle would go the opposite way for a double, but Danny Duffy would retire the next three Rays batters in order.

In fact he would only give up two more hits in seven innings, both singles, one each to Mike Brosseau and Mike Zunino.

The Royals offense was only better by a slim margin. With just one hit (Salvy Perez single) through four innings, Nicky Lopez would lead off the the fifth with a single. With one out Erick Mejia would get his first hit of the season, an RBI single making it 1-0 Royals.

In the eight inning Duffy would exit for Jake Brentz. The Royals lefty would retire the Rays in order. In the ninth, the Royals decided to use Kyle Zimmer to get close out the Rays, seeing as Josh Staumont had back to back poor outings. Zimmer shut them down and the Royals win the game 1-0. Moving forward Staumont will return to closing duties.

                        Game two
                        WP: M. Minor (2-0)
                        LP: Y. Chirinos

Mike Minor was absolutely dominant against the Rays in this game. Taking a perfect game into the fifth inning, the Rays got their first base runner on a Brosseau walk. Minor would get through 5.2 innings before Manuel Margot would pick up a double, spoiling the no hit bid before it got all that serious. Mike Minor goes 6.2 innings, allowing two singles and one walk, striking out 4. He moves to 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA.

The offense got in gear early and stayed hot. Andrew Benintendi with a one out single in the first was followed up by a Salvador Perez two run HR. The Royals offense came through again in the second. Following Hunter Dozier and Jarrod Dyson walks plus a Nicky Lopez single, Benintendi singles a run in and Salvy walks a run in. It’s 4-0 Royals after two.

In the fifth, Carlos Santana beats the shift for a lead off single. Ryan O’Hearn, back from his injury walks. Hunter Dozier singles a run in to make it 5-0 Royals.

Salvy would add another RBI giving him four for the game and Lopez adds an RBI and the Royals win easily, 7-0

The Royals look to finish off the home stand by sweeping the Rays, who are off to a surprisingly poor start at 6-12 after this loss.

                        Game three
                        WP: C. Poche (2-0)
                        LP: S. Barlow (1-1)

It was another fast start for the Royals offense as they looked for the sweep. Salvador Perez singled off of Rays SP Chris Archer with two outs in the first and it was followed by Carlos Santana’s 7th HR of the season making it 2-0 Royals.

Brady Singer was on the bump for the Royals. After a quick first inning, Ji-Man Choi homered off of Singer to cut the deficit in half.

Royals third baseman Hunter Dozier tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and was driven in by a Michael Taylor sac fly, extending the Royals lead to 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Randy Arozarena tripled and was driven in by a Brandon Lowe double, once again making it a one run game.

The rain was steady all game, but after the sixth, the umps called for a rain delay that lasted 45 minutes. After the delay Kyle Zimmer took the mound for the Royals. Rays CF Kevin Kiermaier led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to single on a wild pitch. Zimmer would regroup however and get back to back fly balls and get Arozarena to strikeout to end the inning.

Whit Merrifield led of the bottom of the 8th inning with a walk, but was injured on a kickoff attempt and had to leave the game. Another loss in another inconsistent Royals offense.

Josh Staumont came out to close out the game and earn the sweep of the Rays. Lowe struck out on three pitches. It seemed Staumont had refound his control after back to back poor outings. However Choi walked and so did Brosseau. Then Staumont hit Mejia with a fastball that got away. Manuel Margot suicide squeezes to tie it, and Staumont blows another save save. Barlow would come in to end the inning. The Royals couldn’t score in the ninth and the game was headed to extras, tied at 3.

Barlow got through the top of the 10th inning on just 6 pitches, leaving the Royals needing just a run.

Eric Mejia bunted Jarrod Dyson over to third. Hanser Alaberto came in off the bench to face the lefty Colin Poche. He hit a two hopper to the left of rookie SS Taylor Walls who made an off balance throw to the plate and Dyson was called out on a controversial call. The Royals would not score and the game was headed to the 11th.

Barlow came back with a low pitch count. Manuel Margot was the auto runner and he stole third on the first pitch. The next batter was Brandon Lowe who hit a two run HR into the right field bullpen. The Rays take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the 11th.

Andrew Benintendi struck out to start the inning, then Salvador Perez singles to left. With runners at the corners, the sizzling hot Carlos Santana came to the plate, but hit into a game ending double play.

Royals drop the finale but still won the series, running the record to 11-7. However, an even bigger loss than the game to the Rays was the news Whit Merrifield would be headed to the 10 day IL with a pulled hamstring. The Royals will be getting Jorge Soler back however, as he has healed from his injury. The Royals will need to make a roster move to replace Whit’s spot, but that will happen on the off day tomorrow.

The Royals complete the home stand 6-4 and will now head on the road for very winnable and necessary series against the Tigers and Pirates before division games against the Twins.

                        Division standings:
                        1. Twins 13-6
                        2. Royals 11-7 (1.5 GB)
                        3. Indians 10-7 (2 GB)
                        4. White Sox 11-9 (2.5 GB)
                        5. Tigers 8-10 (4.5 GB)

Ok.. I rarely play franchise, I’m always busy with roster making. But I have a cpu vs cpu games going for the Jays. Is there any way you can force trade or signing without the the cpu telling me not enough or need better assets for trading/signing. I try and keep it like real life but sometimes i can’t make any move cause cpu won’t let me eventhough I have 30 team control. Is there something I missed? I want FULL control. Who cares what players or cpu wants.

The Tigers opened the second half of the season with a 7-2 victory over the second place Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park Friday night. Jonathan Schoop homered twice, and drove in 3. Jeimer Candelario also homered, and had a pair of RBI for the Tigers. Kyle Dutcher started, went 6 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 8. He earned his 18th win of the season in as many starts. Matt Shoemaker pitched well for the Twins, but took the loss.
