Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

The Blue Jays finish the month of April hot on a 6 game winning streak. Their record sits at 20-7, which is good for first in the AL East.

The hitting has been very strong to start the season. Bichette and Grichuk lead the way with 7 homers followed by Guerrero and Hernandez with 6. The entire lineup has been strong with no real weak points at the moment.

The rotation has been very strong led by Ryu and Ray. However, the surprise has been Pearson and Manson who both have ERAs below 2 to start the season. If the Jays can get this kind of success this year on their high potential pitching prospects they will be fine.

The bullpen has been banged up by injuries but Chatwood and Romano have stabilized the back of the bullpen. Stripling and Thornton have been great as swingmen. Mayza hasn’t allowed a run and Castro and Payamps have been pleasant surprises.

The Jays did pick up Wilson Ramos after the Tigers released him. He will start against left handed pitchers with McGuire the main starter in Toronto. Jansen was struggling and was sent to AAA.

Finally, the Jays finished April signing 3 to minor league deals. The most recognizable is former Blue Jays star Edwin Encarnacion. He will get some reps in Buffalo, but the Jays hope to have him with the big club in a couple of weeks due to the struggles of Rowdy Tellez. With the team looking to contend this year, it’s fitting for the Jays to bring back a veteran slugger who can help them come playoff time.

Also, they signed OF Mark Zagunis and UTL Brandon Dixon to fill some holes in AAA who have been dealing with a slew of long term injuries. They could see some time with the big club baring injuries.

        Start of Season - 2023

After the abysmal end to the 2022 campaign, things were once again fairly quiet this off-season. Our first move of the offseason was to bring in a new manager after parting ways with Mike Matheny (now hitting coach for the Rockies). We signed Tim Knotts to a 3-year deal worth 15 million and after a long search, we signed Kurt Warner (not the QB) to be our new pitching coach to replace Cal Eldred.

Shohei Ohtani is set to be a free agent after the 2023 season, and with that, we weren't quite sure what to do with the money we have now. We offered Ohtani the largest contract in team history at 7 years and 210 million dollars. Unfortunately, he did not sign and instead took a 1-year deal worth 7.1 million in arbitration. He is probably worth a whole lot more with his performance on the field. Staying on the field hasn't been easy though. We did bring back Whit Merrifield. He signed a 2-year deal worth 15.6 million. He will make 7.8 million in the first year and there is a mutual option for year 2 at 7.8 million as well. Andrew Benintendi also returns after he signed a 3-year deal worth 21.9 million. 7.3 million each year with mutual option on the final year.

With 210 million in limbo for Ohtani, we didn't have a ton of money to work with in free agency. We tried to shore up the back of the rotation by bringing in Zach Davies on a 3-year deal worth 18.5 million. He spent the last 2 seasons with the Cubs putting up a 3.96 ERA in 375.1 IP. And after the bullpen struggled for much of last season we made a few moves to add some depth. First, we signed Nick Wittgren to a 2-year deal worth 8.4 million. We then brought in Cal Quantrill and Alex Reyes on 1-year deals worth 2 million and 1.6 million. The expectation was for Wittgren to start in the majors with Quantrill and Reyes both fighting for a spot in spring training. Wittgren spent the last 4 seasons with the Indians and over the last 2 seasons put up a 2.80 ERA in 148 IP. Quantrill in the last 2 seasons also with the Indians wasn't quite as good. He had a 105.2 IP in 2021 putting up a 4.94 ERA and with 46.2 IP in 2022 he had a 5.59 ERA. As for Reyes, the Cardinals opted not to offer him arbitration after putting up a 3.14 ERA in 14.1 IP. In 2021 he had a 4.79 ERA in 77 IP. We did lose a couple of players off of waivers with Austin Cox and Richard Lovelady both being claimed by Baltimore after being removed from the 40 man roster.

        League Signings
        Spoiler

For the most part, Spring Training went pretty much as expected. We had 10 guys who we considered locks to make the team with another 9 who we thought would make the team but had the chance to lose their spot. We did have 2 players who we thought were locks that ended up losing their spot. Both Scott Barlow and Colin Poche lost out on their spots in the pen after putting up a 7.36 and 7.53 ERA in 11 and 14.1 IP. Gregory Soto was close to losing his spot as well after putting up a 5.52 ERA. Alex Reyes and Cal Quantrill ended up winning those 2 spots with Roland Gunn falling just short.

The 6 man rotation was pretty much set but Asa Lacy and Jackson Kowar were given a chance to earn a spot if Brady Singer or Jonathan Bowlan underperformed. Both fell short though with Lacy putting up a 4.91 ERA in 11 IP and Jackson Kowar putting up a 4.50 ERA in 16 IP.

On the offensive side, only 2 of the 12 players projected to make the roster find themselves in AAA to start the season. Cam Gallagher was not happy with losing his backup catcher spot to Kyle Higashioka last season. He reclaimed his spot after finishing spring training with a .765 OPS compared to the .667 OPS of Higashioka. Kyle Isbel was the 2nd victim though it's not entirely his fault and it was a very close battle. In 58 AB he had a .744 OPS with 3 HR but suffered a pulled calf in the last game that prevented him from being ready for game #1. Taking his spot is rookie OF Seuly Matias. His numbers were almost identical with a .742 OPS and 3 HR in 59 AB.

Ryan McBroom, Ryan O'hearn and our #4 prospect Carlos Mitre were battling for the 1st base job. The expectation was for O'Hearn and McBroom to both make the team and platoon between righties and lefties. But it didn't quite go that way. McBroom was optioned to AAA after putting up a .448 OPsin his first 25 AB. O'Hearn did his part hitting .293/.348/.512 in 41 AB. And Mitre was our best hitter putting up an OPS over 1.000. Ultimately though we made the decision to have him start the season in AAA. With Ohtani needing to DH and Mitre not even being very useful at 1B our options were limited. O'Hearn will still only play vs RHP with Dozier sliding over to 1st against lefties. The last spot on the team went to Hanser Alberto over Erick Mejia. Alberto put up a .926 OPS in 56 AB with Mejia sitting at .651 in 52.

The Royals placed 2 players in the Top 50 Prospects list. Coming in at #10 is 19-year-old OF Erick Pena followed by 23-year-old SS Michael Pittman at #36. The Mets, Mariners, Rays and Blue Jays all have 4 players in the top 50 with the Rays quartet leading the way with an AVG ranking of 12.75. 24 teams are featured on the list with the Braves, Red Sox, White Sox, Rockies, Tigers and Astros all failing to make it.

We open the season on the road facing off against the Texas Rangers in a 4 games series. We follow that up against another AL West opponent as we head out to LA to face the angels. Our home opener gives us our first taste of division play as we take on the Indians before the Twins come to town for 4 games. We have 23 games total in April with 10 of them at home and only 7 against teams under .500 last season. We have more games against the AL West with 10 than we do our own division with 9. We won't face the White Sox till May 2nd and the Tigers till May 16th. Once again our goal will be to finish .500. Thought we had a chance to be a little better than 75 wins last season. And up until the last 3 weeks, it looked like we would. I expect Carlos Mitre sooner rather than later. The easiest path for him would be the hardest for the team. Ohtani getting hurt would open up the DH spot for him full-time. Matias or O'hearn struggling would be another path for him. If he can come up within the first month I think rookie of the year could be in his future. I have no doubt he will be the best rookie hitter when he debuts.

The Devils have finished up the month of May with a 24-25 record 4.5 GB of the division leading Astros. The offense has been producing at a high level while the rotation has been struggling to put together quality starts. The Devils might be looking to move some pieces soon if the team keeps falling back in the division.

On the offensive side Darnell Sweeney is hitting .330 with 5HR and 30RBI also leading the league with 23SB. Jedd Gyorko has heated up since bringing his average over .250. David Bote is also hitting very well carrying a .325 average. Zack Collins has struggled so far this season and Adam Haseley was moved to the bench after posting an average under .100.

In the Rotation nobody has an ERA under 4. Both Heaney and Hamels guys who I thought would have solid seasons have been disappointments so far. The back end with Kelly and Honeywell have been my best pitchers thus far. In the Bullpen Seranthony Dominguez has been my best reliever and both Scott Alexander and Daniel Norris have been solid as well.

The Devils optioned Ty Buttrey to Triple A and Recalled Juan Alonso a created player who I signed in Season 1.

Jake Cave was placed on the 10 day injured list with a Inflamed Hip. The Devils recalled Greg Deichmann from Triple A

In the month of April Jake Cave and Greg Garcia have been carrying the offense both providing 4 HR's and hitting above .350. Jedd Gyorko is off to a slow start hopefully he pulls it together. Also Zack Collins and Adam Haseley have been very cold, might look to make some changes at C and CF if they dont start hitting.

On the Pitching side Brent Honeywell has a 2.10 ERA and Heaney and Porcello have been solid. Merrill Kelly has struggled recently which might make Reynaldo Lopez an option in that spot. The bullpen has been okay thus far with Scott Alexander and Daniel Norris giving quality innings. Pedro Strop has been shaky with a ERA over 6.

Cardinals finish Spring Training with 11-12 record

The Cardinals have wrapped up Spring Training with a victory over the Nationals to move their record to 11-12, as they now focus on the 2022 season.

The best news of Spring Training was that everyone is healthy at the end of camp.

The Cardinals will take a 26 man roster to the regular season pretty much comprised of the players you would expect. The only "shock" would be that Lane Thomas will be a reserve outfielder instead of Connor Capel. Thomas is better defensively and has more speed.

The only other decision was that Dakota Hudson will indeed be the 5th starter instead of prospect Levi Prater. The Cardinals are just worried that Prater only pitched as high as Double A last year and the fear of him getting into trouble facing major league hitters consistently and losing confidence. He will start in Memphis.

The 26 man roster will be:

            ROTATION:

            Jack Flaherty
            Carlos Martinez
            Max Scherzer
            Kwang Hyun Kim (L)
            Dakota Hudson

            BULLPEN:

            John Gant
            Jordan Hicks
            Hansel Robles
            Roberto Osuna
            Tyler Webb (L)

            Genesis Cabrera (L)

I feel like I've made a lot of progress in my franchise this year. I started a few days after the game came out. I haven't restarted. I play close to every day. And yet, in a few weeks, CB is going to lap me.

The Braves are on a roll, having won 16 of 17 after a three-game sweep of the Dodgers. We've gone from being three games behind the Mets in the East to three games in front.

Austin Riley continues to struggle however. We're into June now and he's still below the Mendoza line and leading the league in strikeouts. To be fair, he's had some tough luck with hard-hit outs. We were willing to give him more time to work things out in Atlanta, but Johan Camargo has made the most of his limited opportunities. And on our off day before heading to Philadelphia for a three-game series, we decided it was time to give Camargo a shot at playing every day.

Since we want Riley playing every day, we optioned him to Gwinnett. Ehire Adrianza has been recalled to take over Camargo's utility role. But that left us without a shortstop at Gwinnett. So it was time to wheel and deal again.

We acquired Thairo Estrada and Jhoulys Chacin from the Yankees for Patrick Weigel and Jake Lamb. We're hoping Estrada solves our season-long problem at SS at AAA. And maybe he'll develop into a bench piece down the road. Chacin was a throw-in to offset Lamb's $1M salary.

For the Yankees, moving Estrada opens up playing time at AA for better prospect Anthony Volpe. And they get a decent C-level prospect in Weigel.

We managed a split with the Yankees in the 2 game series.

Game 1 SP Fried held his own vs. Cole. Both pitchers went 6 innings. It came down the bullpens. We won 3-2. CP Will Smith earned his 7 for 7 SV

Game 2: Another well pitched game. Servino vs. Anderson. Both went 6 innings. Servino just left with the 2-1 lead and Chapman nailed it down by striking out 2. We lost 2-1.

We are going home for a 7 game home stand. 3 vs. D-backs and 4 vs. the Cubbies.
We are 10-8, 1.5GB of the NL East leading Phillies(12.7).
I am going to give CF Pache the starting job for the homestand. He is batting .300, 6H,4R with 2(2B) and 1(3B). in 20AB..... Inciarte has slumped from BA .330 to .260.

Hot right now is 1B Freeman .323 2HR,11RBI.... I will bat CF Pache in front of Freeman and RF Acuna Jr. to the clean up spot

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys do about guys like Ozuna or Bauer in your Franchise? Leave it alone? Delete them? Something else in between? Maybe 0 out their attributes as a kind of suspension?

I leave it alone. Some guys need their franchise to exactly mimic real life but some don't.

I think I'm probably just going to kill their attributes. If/when they get lengthy suspensions I'll probably delete them, if they're cleared if wrong doing, I'll just restore their ratings.

                          THE ORIOLE WAY
                          2021 Baltimore Orioles (4-3)

Cespedes’ First Hit as an Oriole Is Grand Friday, April 9th, 2021
The Orioles inked 35-year old slugger Yoenis Cespedes to a 1-year/$1.5M contract ahead of Spring Training to challenge for a corner outfield spot. After an uninspiring spring, many were surprised when it was announced he had made the Opening Day roster for the Orioles in a bench role. Cespedes began the season 0-for-10 at the plate and entered the home opener yesterday as a defensive replacement in the 8th inning. After making an out in his first at-bat, his number came up again in the bottom of the 12th with the bases loaded and two outs. He lined the 3-1 pitch from Red Sox reliever Hirokazu Sawamura over the left field wall for his first hit in an Orioles uniform, a walk-off grand slam.

The final was 7-3 O’s with the other three runs coming from an Austin Hays solo homer and two RBI singles from Maikel Franco. Adam Plutko earned the win, his first as an Oriole, after pitching a scoreless 12th inning. The Orioles were forced to use five relievers in the first game of the series after Paul Fry allowed a home run to tie the game following starting pitcher Felix Hernandez’s seven-inning, two-run performance.

Hey, does anyone here actually focus on the coaches for Franchise Mode? I have been doing some testing lately as best I can and all I can say is that the coaches stat boosts really don't mirror what they're actually supposed to give during in-game gameplay. I took Jose Iglesias for example. He has 30 Plate Discipline before I enter a game. I have Joe Maddon as my manager who gives +3 Plate Discipline. I have Izaiah Fay who gives a -3 Plate Discipline. When I go into the game and check to see Iglesias' stat, the discipline stat shouldn't be buffed or nerfed but it shows that he has +3 Discipline is at 33 now. I'm wondering how the heck does +3 and -3 still give you 3. I think the coaches stat boosts are either bugged or there are hidden boosts that San Diego Studios doesn't show us when selecting coaches. Can anyone give more insight on this? Thank you

I leave it alone. I find myself having more fun with my franchise when I consider it a separate universe from real life.

Funny bit on Osuna. I briefly started a franchise before restarting for multiple reasons, primarily to use a different roster, but like 2 weeks into the season after blowing some games late the Blue Jays signed Osuna! Fortunately, it was the A’s who picked him up when I started over.

Rough month for the Devils as they keep sliding finishing off the month of June with a 34-42 records 8.5 GB of the division leading Astros. They are 6.5 back in the Wild Card which still could be a shot. The team took a big hit this month loosing Darnell Sweeney for the rest of the season with a torn MCL

In the 2021 Draft the Devils selected SS Tommy Choi 89 potential. With the next three picks the Devils selected two SP Jay Gonzalez and Geoffrey Linder and a Closer Ramon Morales all B potential.

The Devils made a trade acquiring 2B Eli Ybarra from the Pirates for Yu Chang. Ybarra was one of the standouts in the draft class from last year with A potential and figured he would fit right in with the team after the injury to Darnell.

The Devils offense has ben sputtering of late with our leadoff man going on the shelf. Kyle Schwarber has been heating up of late along with Ryon Healy.
The Pitching has still been disappointing with Andrew Heaney being the worst having a 4.75 ERA. Brent Honeywell has been our best posting a 3.69 ERA.

The Devils put Cole Hamels on waivers and called up Kyle Funkhouser to replace him in the Rotation. Jake Cave came back from injury. With Sweeney going on the DL we called up Adam Haseley from Triple A and Tim Wendell.
