Cardinals open the 2022 season with a sweep of the Brewers

The Cardinals have begun the 2022 season on a great note as they swept the Brewers in a 3 game series in St.Louis to open the season.

The Cardinals offense wasn't too shabby putting up 16 runs over the 3 games while the pitching staff allowed just 6.

Jack Flaherty and Carlos Martinez earned wins in the first two games with Alex Reyes getting the save in game 2. Max Scherzer pitched well but earned a no decision after leaving in the 7th of a 2-2 game.

Offensively the Cards were carried by Goldschmidt and Arenado as you would expect. Paul DeJong struggled in the first two games but hit his first homerun in the series finale on Sunday.

The Cardinals will remain home as they host the Reds for a 3 game series starting Monday.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

Once I get caught up to real life and/or get to the All-Star break I'll post more about my franchise, but I just want to say that I love baseball and how this game can capture the sport perfectly sometimes.

I beat the Marlins 13-9 and neither team hit a single home run in the game. I then go on to lose to Boston 7-5 the next game and each team hit 3 home runs. Then the next game I beat Boston in 12 innings 7-5, but what was great was Charlie Morton started the game, he had a 7+ ERA and had been trash. He threw 6 innings allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 7. Easily his best outing of the season.

Baseball is so whacky at times. You can see 22 runs get scored and not see one ball leave the ballpark then the very next game you can see a 2-2 score after 2 innings with 4 solo shots.

Heck, I just looked back at the box score of the game before that 13-9 game. I beat the Marlins 9-6 and neither team hit a homer that game either. 37 runs scored in 18 innings and zero homers. Then in my 2-game set against Boston 27 runs were scored and 11 homers were hit in 21 innings.

And looking at game 1 of the Marlins series, I won 5-2, neither team hit a HR there either. Zero homers hit in a 3-game series. 11 homers hit in the next 2-game series. My Braves scored 5, 9, and 13 runs in the 3 Marlins games. The two games prior to that they scored 4 total runs against the Phillies.

      Baseball.

Padres and the Dodgers finish their series with all three games being one run difference finishes. Games one and two went to extra innings so it's safe to say the two teams are very equal. But one is a defending champion while the other has only made the playoffs 6 times in their long 51 year history. Dodgers win the series 2-1.

          Cardinals take series from Reds

The Cardinals (5-1) continue their great start to the season as they took 2 of 3 from the Reds to start the week in St.Louis.

The Cardinals lost the series opener as Kwang Hyun Kim was lit up by the Reds offense. Kim lasted just 4 1/3 innings before being chased giving up 6 runs on 10 hits including 2 homeruns and 3 doubles. The Cards were blanked 6-0 for their first loss of the season.

Game 2 saw Dakota Hudson pitch beautifully, but he unfortunately would get a no decision as Tyler Webb was unable to keep the lead in the 8th, as the Reds jumped up 3-2 behind a Joey Votto double. But the Cards offense would not be denied when Yadier Molina delivered a 2 out, 2 run double in the bottom of the inning to give the Cards a 4-3 lead. They would add 3 more runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead, which would be the final score.

The series finale Jack Flaherty was masterful. Flaherty went 7 innings striking out 12 issuing one free pass and two hits. He was pulled due to pitch count and for a pinch hitting in the bottom of the 7th with the Cards clinging to a 2-0 lead. The Cards would go on to win the game 4-1 and take the series.

Next up the Cards hit the road for the first time in 2022 as they travel to Milwaukee for a 3 game, in 4 day series with the Brewers starting Thursday afternoon. Carlos Martinez, Max Scherzer, and Kwang Hyun Kim are the scheduled starters.

I wound up starting a new franchise with the Dodgers. So far, I’m 2-1 with them. Will finish the opening series against Colorado in what Jim Rome calls Coors Canaveral then onto Oakland.

Cardinals place Carlos Martinez and Tyler O'Neill on IL

The Cardinals have placed both Carlos Martinez and Tyler O'Neill on the IL after their first road game of the season in Milwaukee.

Carlos Martinez felt a twinge in his elbow during warm ups and was scratched from his start. He's diagnosed with an elbow strain and the Cardinals will place him on the 15 Day IL. John Gant made the spot start and was exceptional pitching 5 innings of shut out baseball.

Tyler O'Neill was removed in the 4th inning after injuring his bicep sliding into second base. O'Neill has been placed on the 10 Day IL.

Highly touted prospect LHP Levi Prater was recalled from Memphis to take the rotation spot of Martinez. Prater went 6.2 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts in his debut in Memphis. The Cardinals thought about Ponce De Leon but he was less successful in his first start at Memphis going just 5 innings giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with 4 walks.

Connor Capel was recalled from Memphis to fulfill the vacant roster spot left by O'Neill. Capel will serve as a bench role with Lane Thomas taking the starting spot in the lineup.

Hopefully the injury bug doesn't settle in St.Louis and the Cardinals can get passed these two setbacks without losing a step as the Cards are 6-1 on the young season and playing terrific baseball.

So one of my franchise files is 30 team control. Sim every regular season and non elimination playoff games, and watch elimination playoff games. Just started the 2026 season. Last season Trea Turner joined the 40/40 club with 40 homers and 42 steals. He wasn't in the top 3 for NL MVP. Kind of shocking. Tatis won MVP batting .289/43hr/134rbis.

Awards are as weird in the game as they are in real life...Max Scherzer is currently 2nd in Cy Young voting in my game right now because he's second in the league in W's, and 2nd in K's. His ERA is above 4, and his WHIP isn't very good either...Plus, he currently ranks in the 20's among pitchers for WAR...

                        Cardinals take series against Brewers

The Cardinals (7-2) won their 3rd series of the season as they took 2 of 3 from the Brewers in Milwaukee. The Cardinals had the opportunity to sweep but lost the series finale on Sunday 2-1 in extra innings.

The Cardinals won game 1 behind a dominant pitching from their bullpen as Carlos Martinez was scratched due to elbow issue. John Gant and Genesis Cabrera pitching a combined shutout as the Cards rolled 9-0.

Game 2 saw Max Scherzer get his second ND of the year as he was trailing 4-2 when he left in the 6th, but the Cardinals rallied in the late innings to earn the victory, 6-4. The comeback was capped by a Paul DeJong 3 run bomb in the 8th.

Game 3, Kwang Hyun Kim was good but he left with the game tied after 7. The bullpen was solid until 10th when Giovanny Gallegos threw a wild pitch that allowed the runner to go to 3rd on the first pitch. After intentionally walking the bases loaded, Gallegos struck out Luis Urias. The next batter Christian Yelich would hit a sharp ground ball just off the glove of a diving Tommy Edman that would secure the walk off win for the Brewers.

The Cardinals will now travel to Cincinnati for a 3 game series with the Reds beginning on Monday.

Cardinals drop first series of the season to the Reds

The Cardinals (8-4) have lost their first series of the 2022 season as the Reds took 2 out of 3 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati to start the week.

The Cardinals dropped the series opener despite a strong performance from Dakota Hudson. Hudson went 6.2 innings allowing 2 runs (Castellanos 2 run bomb in 7th) on 3 hits while striking out 10 with 2 walks and a hit batsman. Hudson left the score was 3-2 Cardinals, but the bullpen was unable to preserve the victory as Tyler Webb came in to face Votto, Winkler, and Moustakas who were hitting 2, 3, and 5th with Eugenio Suarez in between. Webb gave up back to back jacks to Votto and Winkler, walked Suarez and then gave up a 2 run shot to Moustakas, putting the Reds up 6-3.

Game 2 saw Jack Flaherty pitch a gem to only again see the bullpen blow the game late, this time it was Genesis Cabrera, but thankfully the Cardinals would win in extra innings. Alex Reyes got the save and Jordan Hicks was credited with the win. Justin Williams hit a 2 run shot in the 10th to give the Cards the win.

Game 3 was the debut of Levi Prater and much to the fear of the managerial staff, Prater was roughed up over 5 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 7 hits over 5 innigns, but did strike out 6 with just one walk and a hit batter. John Gant was the bullpen explosion this go around giving up 4 hits, 4 runs in just 1.1 innings of work to take the loss and see the Cards drop their first series of the year.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday but will return home for a 9 game homestand starting with the Nationals this weekend. Tyler O'Neill is expected to rejoin the lineup on Sunday afternoon.

After putting up 27 runs in 3 games against the Marlins, 12 runs in 2 games against Boston, my Braves put up 10 runs in 4 games against a struggling Cardinals team and get swept in a 4-game set.

Nobody could make any hard contact for most of the series. The few shining moments were Pache hitting his first career HR in his first AB since being called back up after 2 months in AAA, and Soroka and Anderson pitched 2 gems in the series, but my team lost both games with identical 3-2, scores.

Sorry I can’t find the search feature here but does anybody else occasionally have an issue pinch running? I go the the substitution screen and try to pinch run and it refused to let me.
