    Re: MLB lockout

Sadly, I don’t think a 60-70 game season is the worst case scenario for the owners.

I like how the 3 batter rule was supposed to speed up the game and the game still is slower.

I think each team should get 2 timeouts and to change the pitcher during the innings you spend a timeout. You wouldn’t need the 3 batter rule.

Back n the day you had the pitching coach come out and go over the scouting report for the batter in a big situation. Now I think pitchers have that on their arm.

worst case is around may 27-june1st which would mean another 60-70 game season opening day wouild be july 1st-4th

the big q is there 8 owners willing to lose a whole season to try and break the union
Why not just make Spring training games count?? then wasting another 3 weeks just make them count as games but you can have 40 man rosters for 3 weeks and use all the players for the first 3 weeks of the season. just like the old Sep days.

every team would have the same advantage of having a starter only pitching 2 innings or so to get ready. then after 3 weeks we are back to 26 man rosters and back to normal and have had games count.

All this talk about changing the game depresses me. Three batter rules, timeouts, pitch clocks. Ugh I hate all of it.

I’m old but I love the pitch clock. Baseball is never going to die but unless the sport does something to appeal to people who have shorter attention spans, it won’t be able to grow. Especially when competing against sports that are faster paced and more exciting.

Universal DH and banning the shift just takes strategy out of the game in favor of artificial offense. Add that to the already implemented 3 batter rule and its just too much for me. These are the best players in the world right?

I'm probably out from being a regular baseball consumer.

There are a lot of things I enjoy about modern baseball (the impact of analytics, the "Let The Kids Play" mantra, etc.), but Manfred's pace-of-play initiatives have been godawful, for the most part.

While a small number of his ideas have been good (limiting mound visits, for instance) or at least inoffensive, most of what he's proposed or implemented has ranged from annoying to truly terrible. I especially hate the rules that limit strategy and impede the natural evolution of the game (i.e. the three-batter minimum and shift restrictions). Baseball's pace is a feature, not a bug, y'all.

This definitely speaks to the need for more league customizations options in MLBTS Franchise. I'd love for the ability to undo Manfred's rule changes, similar to what NBA 2K's MyNBA lets you do during setup and/or the offseason.

We may need to wait to gain clarity. Like people probably said this about basketball and illigal defense how you couldnt just stand a bigman in the middle of the paint anymore. If they said you gotta have two infielders on each side i think they may be fine. You can postion the giy you shift just right at second base up the middle abd you only give up a little ground.

I find it hard to see 3 hr regular season and 4 hr playoff games as a “feature”. I went the Dodgers\Giants wild card game and the game was great but waaaay too long. My Kid pretty much lasted until the 7th and he actually loves the sport. I can’t imagine getting kids to love watching this game when its that long.

This is what I don't get some NFL games go for that long as well because of the Commercials. but we never hear how 'boring' they can be. look at that NFL game that went over 5 hours last year. if you have a lot of penalties it is BORING as hell and drags on.

It can be but one of the positives is the NFL season is only 17 games. Getting people to watch the majority of 162 games plus playoffs (not the case for my Orioles) when the games run 3 to 4 hrs is a tough sell.

I mean, I'm not trying to say that there aren't valid concerns regarding the sport's appeal, especially with younger demographics.

But, I just don't think the solution lies in ham-fisted rule changes. I truly don't see how things like the automatic intentional walk or three-batter minimum make the game more appealing for someone who wouldn't enjoy baseball otherwise. Stuff like that serves only to irritate existing fans, really.

I've long maintained that better ways to grow the game would be to make youth leagues more accessible, live games more affordable, and televised games less tied to traditional cable subscriptions.

On a slightly different topic, I'm still holding out some hope that Bacon's Fictional Roster lives on for another year, even though he's talked about how much of a chore it would be to recreate it from scratch yet again. I'm curious if the ongoing lockout would impact his plans/sentiments.

I'm a lifelong baseball fan but I dont have an issue with either of these changes and not just because they speed up the game (which is absolutely about bringing in new fans). Maybe I'm not a big traditionalist but something like automatic intentional walk is kind of a common sense change with some benefit in reducing time. 99.9% of intentional walks resulted in an actual walk (the .1% was when someone accidentally threw it to the backstop). Why not save the time instead of going through the ceremony of throwing 4 pitches?

As for your ideas to improve the game....I dont know how effective they would be in 2022. Unless you live in a city like NY, LA, DC or Chicago, Baseball tickets are pretty affordable when compared to other sports. I've seen upper deck regular season Dodgers game tickets for 20-30 bucks. Families can go to ML games if they want to. The issue is making them want to. I'd argue that accessibility isnt the issue. Making a kid want to sit in a stadium for 3 plus hours is the issue when they have other sports, a ton of streaming services and channels, the internet, video games and a bunch of other entertainment options to choose from.

Where televised games are broadcast is a product of the demand. I work in the television industry and I promise if there was a demand for it, we would be back in the 80's when there was Monday Night Baseball. The demand isnt there. The viewers arent there. Fox Saturday baseball games bring in around 2m. A weekend NBA game on ABC brings in about 3-4m depending on who is playing. NFL games destroy both of them.

I agree that accessibility to youth baseball is important. The kids I know who like watching baseball are ones who played baseball.
