Cardinals take series in Wrigley against the Cubs

The Cardinals (4-2) repeated in the Cubs series what they did against the Reds in the Opening Series of the season. The Cardinals won the first two games but couldn't pull off the sweep.

The Cardinals won Monday night with Miles Mikolas (1-0) on the mound. Mikolas coming off a 19 game win season that saw him be the starter for the National League in the All-Star Game, didn't have his best stuff. Mikolas would go just 5.1 innings before being lifted having given up just 3 runs, but on 9 hits with 3 walks. Thankfully for Mikolas the bullpen and the offense was up to the task as the Cardinals would pull off the 7-3 victory, behind a strong showing from Joey Gallo who earned 2 hits including a homerun and 3 RBIs.

On Tuesday Dakota Hudson was on the mound for the Cardinals, but didn't factor into the decision. Hudson didn't pitch bad, as he got into the 6th inning, but after giving up the game tying homerun to Dansby Swanson, he was lifted from the game after the Cardinals had just taken the lead thanks to a Tyler O'Neill solo homerun and an unearned run scored on a Cubs error. Brad Boxberger would face his old team and get thru the inning. In the 7th, Goldschmidt did it again as he hit a two run shot that put the Cardinals up 4-2 which would be the final score.

Wednesday saw Julio Urias get the ball, but it was anything but pretty. Urias struggled with command all day leading to 5 walks and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings of work, taking his first loss on the season. The bats got the Cardinals back in the game when Brendan Donovan delivered a two run double to cut the lead to 4-2, but Giovanny Gallegos would continue to struggle and allow a run on 3 straight hits to the 3 batters he faced making the lead 5-2. The Cards would add one in the 8th when Dylan Carlson singled home a run but that would be the last of the scoring as the Cardinals fell 5-3.

In other news, Nolan Arenado left Tuesday's game with a oblique strain and is expected to miss a few days. He will not be placed on the IL.

Trend continues, Cardinals take 2 of 3 from Mariners in St.Louis

The Cardinals (6-3) continued their trend in the series with the Mariners. They won the first two games of the series, only to not be able to pull off the sweep. The Cardinals lead the NL Central by a single game over the Cubs.

On Friday night the Cardinals gave the ball to Jack Flaherty, but he only got to the 2nd inning before being lifted due to a back issue. Flaherty isn't expected to be shelved and is expected to take the ball his next turn thru the rotation. Brad Boxberger, and nearly the entire bullpen, earned the win as the Cardinals beat the Mariners 3-1. But Flaherty wasn't the only casualty on this day. With Arenado out with the oblique strain, the Cardinals put Joey Gallo at third. Gallo would injure his shin on a play in the 4th inning that will now shelve him until at the least the All-Star break.

On Saturday the Cardinals turned to Jordan Montgomery who had another stellar start as he earned his 2nd victory (2-0) on the season. Again the pitching kept the Mariners bats at bay holding the Mariners to just 4 hits and 1 run as the Cardinals beat the M's 7-1 thanks to a big day by Paul Goldschmidt who had 3 RBIs on 4 hits.

Sunday saw Miles Mikolas suffer another rough outing. Mikolas left in the 6th inning as he would give up 8 runs on 11 hits including 3 homeruns. Mikolas isn't having the follow up season that was expected after the all-star caliber season he put together last year. The Cardinals would score 3 runs thanks to Brendan Donovan and Dylan Carlson, but would fall 8-3, again missing the opportunity to sweep a team.

The Cardinals will remain at home as they welcome the A's to town for a 3 game series starting Monday night.

Joey Gallo to the 60 Day IL

Injuries played a part in the 2023 season and they appear to be a factor this year as well. Joey Gallo left Friday nights game with a fractured shin and will be out until likely the All-Star break. Gallo who signed a one year deal this past offseason to be the primary DH, was playing 3rd base in the absence of Nolan Arenado. Gallo was hitting .278 with 2 homeruns and 6 RBIs before his injury.

The Cardinals recalled Jordan Walker from Memphis as he will likely be the everyday DH and will possibly play 3rd base until Arenado returns.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I decided to make an unconventional managerial move to try and steal a win in extra innings. Tie game, bottom of the 9th with nobody on and two out, Trae Turner batting. I figured if I get him out to end the inning he’s the free runner on 2nd in the 10th and I didn’t want that so I intentionally walked him to face Schwarber. I end up walking Schwarber too but I get Castellanos out so he’ll be the free runner, I’m fine with that result. I knock in the free runner in the top of the tenth and everything is lining up how I planned, Edwin Diaz strikes out enough guys that stranding the free runner shouldn’t be difficult. I get ahead 0-2 on JT Realmuto and try to finish him with a slider but I hang it and boom walk off two run HR

That's awesome. That kind of unpredictability is what makes the game great .

              2023 IBL ALL-STAR GAME

              <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52898470203_9eb3ab3db9_o.jpg" width="720" height="405" alt="AllStar_23"/>
Gilbert’s Steve Heupel blasted a two-run home run to help lead the Desert League to victory.

Tucson, AZ (AP) – The Desert League won the 2nd annual IBL All-Star Game with a 4-3 victory over the Mountain League in a game played at Safeway Field in Tucson. Junior Lima’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the game winner as the Desert League won for the second straight year.

The Desert League grabbed the lead in the third on a Vladimir Bruno (Chandler) solo home run to left. They would increase that lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a Steve Heupel (Gilbert) two-run home run to right field.

The Mountain League would tie it up in the sixth on a three-run home run from Eric Pressley (Rio Rancho).

But the Desert League would retake the lead in the bottom half after Albert Pulido (Mesa) doubled and Junior Lima (Las Vegas) singled him home.

Chad Reyes (Glendale) earned the win, tossing 1.2 innings and not allowing a runner while striking out two. Gilbert’s Geronimo Ortega earned the save.

Gregg Fierro (Fort Worth) took the loss. He pitched one innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one.

Steve Heupel of Gilbert earned the MVP honors, going 1 for 2 with the two-run home run. Albert Pulido and John Nichols (Mesa) each had two hits for the Desert League as they outhit the Mountain League 8-4.

The Regular season resumes on Thursday evening with one game as St George will travel to Flagstaff.

TRADES: Amarillo continues their sell off as they have sent 27-year-old second baseman Kevin Tincher (81 OVR< D POT) to Prescott in exchange for 22-year-old shortstop Antoni Flores (68 OVR, C POT) and 22-year-old starting pitcher Adam Kloffenstein (65 OVR, B POT).

Salt Lake has sent 23-year-old shortstop Andres Cortes (72 OVR, A POT) to Glendale in exchange for 23-year-old catcher Eliezer Alfonso (74 OVR, C POT). Cortes is the 22nd ranked prospect in the IBL.

Salt River was traded 32-year-old reliever John Rose (79 OVR, B POT) to Austin in exchange for 19-year-old third baseman Julio Ramirez (58 OVR, B POT). Rose was (2-2) with an ERA of 4.41 and 11 holds and one blown save in 34.2 innings of work for the Rafters.

Tucson has sent 37-year old starting pitcher Todd McCallum (79 OVR, B POT) to San Antonio for 21-year-old starting pitcher Paul Bledsoe (67 OVR, C POT), 23-year-old first baseman Grant Lavigne (62 OVR. B POT), and 18-year-old reliever Ian Rayes (60 OVR, C POT). McCallum will likely come out of the bullpen for the Javelinas.

Flagstaff has sent 33-year-old starting pitcher Sam Herzog (88 OVR, B POT) to Austin in exchange for 24-year-old shortstop Tom Cho (73 OVR, B POT). Herzog has been struggling in 2023 with a (6-9) record and 5.11 ERA in 107.1 inning of work as the fourth/fifth starter on the staff. Cho was hitting .379 with a home run and two stolen bases at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Hops are calling up #2 prospect in the IBL, Russell Fluty to fill Herzog’s spot in the rotation. The 24-year-old Fluty is (2-5) with a 4.79 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in Triple-A this season.

Just use the SDS Live roster; no reason to wait for custom rosters.

Cardinals sweep the A's in St.Louis

The Cardinals (9-3) swept the A's in St.Louis to begin the week. This was the first sweep of the season for the Cardinals.

Monday night didn't look too good late as the Cardinals blew the lead in the 8th inning when Giovanny Gallegos was unable to get out of a jam that Jose Alvarado had gotten into. Gallegos allowed a 2 run double to Seth Brown with 2 outs that tied the game at 4. Thankfully that would be all the A's could do, and the Cardinals would walk it off in the bottom of the 9th with a Brendan Donovan homerun.

Tuesday night looked better with Julio Urias on the hill. He wasn't particular dominant but he did get thru 7 innings allowing a single run on 6 hits with 4 walks. The bullpen was better with Alex Reyes pitching a perfect 8th and Ryan Helsley closing out the game, and night after he earned the win. It was Helsley's 3rd save of the season. Lars Nootbaar drove in 2 runs and Paul Goldschmidt drove in the other in a 3-1 victory.

Wednesday afternoon, it all came together for the Redbirds. Jack Flaherty would throw a complete game allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts. Tommy Edman had 3 RBIs on the day and youngster Dalton Rushing provided 3 hits as the Cardinals completed the sweep.

The Cardinals will now travel out West to take on the Rockies for a 3 game weekend series in Colorado.

                      2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals welcome the Texas Rangers to DC for a three game set. Both teams are fighting for a Wild Card spot, but the Nationals are trending upwards while the Rangers are just trying to stay afloat. They started the year hot and led the AL West for months, but are now 3 games out of the second Wild Card position.

Game One: Jack Leiter (1-3, 6.85) vs Zach Davies (8-8, 3.76)
Washington got to the young prospect early, scoring a run when Yadiel Hernandez doubled and then two more runs when Brandon Drury followed up with a home run. Texas would get a run in the fourth when Charlie Culberson singled to score Aroldis Garcia. The Nationals got two more in the fifth; Brandon Drury singled, Joey Meneses doubled and Brandon Nimmo drove them both in with a base hit. Charlie Culberson hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh, which would be the end of Zach Davies’ day. He had a solid start, going six innings and giving up just two runs on seven hits while striking out four. The Rangers potentially suffered a major blow in the bottom of the seventh, as Corey Seager made a fantastic diving stop to prevent a base hit from Joey Meneses, but suffered an undisclosed injury and had to leave the game. Victor Arano, Aaron Bummer, and Trevor Rosenthal all worked scoreless innings in relief and the Nationals took game one.*

*Corey Seager avoided serious injury and was taken out as a precaution.

Game Two: Tyler Alexander (5-3, 2.63) vs Lucas Giolito (8-9, 3.93)

The Nationals got a gift in the first; a throwing error by Ezequiel Duran on a ground ball by Andrew Vaughn allowed Victor Robles to score from first. The Nats got another run in the first when Brandon Drury singled to score Vaughn; they then added two more runs in the second when Andrew Vaughn hit a sac fly and Drury hit another RBI base hit. Wilmer Perez would make it 5-0 with a two out single in the third. Brandon Drury continued to stay hot since coming off the IL; in addition to his two RBI singles, he teed off on a solo shot in the fourth for the Nats’ sixth run off of Tyler Alexander. The Rangers finally got to Giolito in the sixth after a lead off walk to Leody Taveras followed by base hits from Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia. Josh Jung followed with a sac fly to make it a 6-2 game. Lucas Giolito finished the sixth inning and then hit the showers, giving up just the two runs in six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Hunter Harvey would pitch a shutout seventh inning and then the Nationals added on three more runs off of Josh Sborz, who walked Kike Hernandez with the bases loaded and then gave up a sharp line drive to Andrew Vaughn that just fell in front of Adolis Garcia. Vaughn has been hitting the ball hard since the Nationals acquired him and they are hoping that finally he will be rewarded for it. The Rangers managed to get two more runs in the eighth, but that was all and the Nationals win yet another series.

Game Three: Jon Gray (9-9, 2.59) vs Stephen Strasburg (11-7, 2.11)
Luis Garcia and Yadiel Hernandez again combined to score the game's first run, as they have many times this year. Garcia doubled and then scored after Yadiel Hernandez followed up with a base hit to center. The Nationals scored three more runs in the third following a solo home run from Brady House, an RBI single from Joey Meneses and a double from Keibert Ruiz. Texas got on the board in the fourth when Jonah Heim hit a double with the bases loaded. Washington got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Brady House singled to score CJ Abrams from second. Neither team would score after the fourth inning, and Washington will take all three games for yet another sweep.

The Nationals are now 65-61, and 3 games ahead of both Miami and San Diego for the second wild card spot. They now travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers (71-54), who are almost certainly going to either be the NL Central champs or a wild card team. The schedule will then get easier for Washington with series against the Pirates and Diamondbacks. They still have a three game series against both the Padres and Marlins (final series of the season), so there is still a long way to go before the Nationals can clinch their playoff berth.

Cardinals take series from Rockies in Colorado

The Cardinals (11-4) took 2 games of a 3 game series with the Rockies in Colorado over the weekend. The Cardinals lead is still a single game over the Cubs in the NL Central.

For the first time this year, the Cardinals lost the opening game of a series, as the Rockies beat the Cardinals 4-1 on Friday night. Jordan Montgomery didn't pitch bad, but he lacked run support and gave up 4 runs over 6.1 innings before being lifted. The Cardinals lone run was driven in by Harrison Bader on a RBI single in the 8th.

On Saturday, things were better. Miles Mikolas took the ball got thru 7 innings as he earned his 2nd win of the season as the Cardinals won 5-3. Nolan Arenado hit a solo homerun and Lars Nootbaar contributed 3 hits as the Cardinals offense rebounded from Friday nights performance.

On Sunday, Dakota Hudson started and got the victory despite giving up 3 runs in the first inning. Nolan Arenado and Lars Nootbaar had their own homerun derby contest going on as both would hit 2 homeruns. Tyler O'Neill got in on the action, but only hit one homerun as the Cardinals would turn a 3-0 deficit into a 8-3 win.

The Cardinals will travel to Los Angeles for a 3 game series with the Angels.

A Trip Around the Bases of the League

1st) The Padres continue to be the best team in baseball with a 14-1 record and have now won 10 straight games.

2nd) Jose Altuve recorded his 500th career RBI in the Astros win over the Rangers

3rd) Brandon Drury of the Angels continues his hitting streak as he has now hit safely in 18 straight games

Home) The Braves have scored 10 or more runs now in 4 straight ballgames. They have scored 11, 10, 10, & 14 runs in their last 4 games. Over their last 5 games they have scored a total of 52 runs. Needless to say, they have won all 5 of those games

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I followed up my heartbreaking loss to the Phillies with another awesome game. We jump out to a 2-0 lead against Wheeler in the first who had a sub 2 era coming in. He threw over 25 pitches in the inning so I felt like we could knock him out early. Then in the bottom of the first Scherzer surrenders four runs so we’re down 4-2 but both pitchers settle in. I’m able to scrape a run across in the 6th and 7th and now we’re tied 4-4. Now it’s the 9th inning and they bring in Gregory Soto who I faced the day before and he was completely unhittable. Nimmo leads off with a 47 hopper that gets through the infield for a base hit, then Starling Marte hits a pop up that is just out of reach of the 2nd baseman and Nimmo is able to advance to third so I’ve got first and third with no outs but I still don’t feel confident at the plate. Lindor strikes out and Alonso immediately goes down 0-2 and I just decide **** it I’m swinging at the next pitch as if it’s a fastball, three run homer and we’re up 7-4. I bring in Diaz to try and avenge the blown save from the day before. He immediately gives up two singles and Realmuto, who hit a walk off homer off him the day before comes up but I’m able to strike out the next three batters for the win.

The next day we get a 4-2 win to win the series and move within two games of first. Then the Brewers come to town and we’ve got a nice pitchers duel, Mets are up 2-1 in the 6th but we manage to score three in the bottom of the sixth. Then with two outs and two on Lindor checks his swing but makes contact and it’s a pop up just past the pitchers mound that the pitcher drops to load the bases instead of end the inning. Two pitches later it’s a Pete Alonso grand slam. My offense is finally waking up and it couldn’t come at a better time because I have no idea what I’m getting from my pitching staff

So I’ve decided to do something a little different. I want to take a team that has never won a World Series and try to do it with them. After some research I decided on the Rockies.

But here’s the thing, I’m going to start out by trying to build a winning minor league system. I will simulate the major league games and manage/play the minor league games.

Every decision I make will be about what is best for our minor league teams. Once a large majority of our minor league players start contributing at the major league level, I will switch my focus to the Rockies.

My thought process behind this is that a winning minor league system will result in better prospect progression. Which means these young guys will be much better when they finally join the Rockies.

I will post updates once I have a chance to start it officially.

Fun fact, the Rockies have never even won a division title.

True. That was why they were a big consideration for me this year for franchise.
