The Cardinals (4-2) repeated in the Cubs series what they did against the Reds in the Opening Series of the season. The Cardinals won the first two games but couldn't pull off the sweep.
The Cardinals won Monday night with Miles Mikolas (1-0) on the mound. Mikolas coming off a 19 game win season that saw him be the starter for the National League in the All-Star Game, didn't have his best stuff. Mikolas would go just 5.1 innings before being lifted having given up just 3 runs, but on 9 hits with 3 walks. Thankfully for Mikolas the bullpen and the offense was up to the task as the Cardinals would pull off the 7-3 victory, behind a strong showing from Joey Gallo who earned 2 hits including a homerun and 3 RBIs.
On Tuesday Dakota Hudson was on the mound for the Cardinals, but didn't factor into the decision. Hudson didn't pitch bad, as he got into the 6th inning, but after giving up the game tying homerun to Dansby Swanson, he was lifted from the game after the Cardinals had just taken the lead thanks to a Tyler O'Neill solo homerun and an unearned run scored on a Cubs error. Brad Boxberger would face his old team and get thru the inning. In the 7th, Goldschmidt did it again as he hit a two run shot that put the Cardinals up 4-2 which would be the final score.
Wednesday saw Julio Urias get the ball, but it was anything but pretty. Urias struggled with command all day leading to 5 walks and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings of work, taking his first loss on the season. The bats got the Cardinals back in the game when Brendan Donovan delivered a two run double to cut the lead to 4-2, but Giovanny Gallegos would continue to struggle and allow a run on 3 straight hits to the 3 batters he faced making the lead 5-2. The Cards would add one in the 8th when Dylan Carlson singled home a run but that would be the last of the scoring as the Cardinals fell 5-3.
In other news, Nolan Arenado left Tuesday's game with a oblique strain and is expected to miss a few days. He will not be placed on the IL.
