Pirates atop NL Central after two months

The Pittsburgh Pirates solid start to 2023 continues. May wasnt as good as April as Pittsburgh finished the month with an even 13-13 record but after starting the month 2-7 they will definitely take the .500 record.

Ji-Man Choi will be making his return as June gets underway after getting injured in April. With his return, Mason Martin was optioned back to Triple A Reno. At least initially, Carlos Santana will keep the everyday first base spot with Choi filling in on rest days.

The Pirates are awaiting a milestone for fan favorite Andrew McCutchen who is now just one homer away from 300 for his career. He is also just five hits away from 2,000. Carlos Santana is also approaching the 300 HR mark but has a ways to go (15).

The Pirates return home to start June to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals (24-33/5th NL Central)

I use the Tigers as well. Legend pithing difficulty. Here are my K/9 numbers.

Rodriguez 8.00 (Career average around 9.00)
Turnbull 9.41 (was right around 8.20 for his career)
Boyd 10.47 (Career high 11.56 in 2019)
Lorenzen 8.28 (four prior seasons with 8.64 or higher)
Manning 8.49 (about 2 ks/9 higher than his best season, but he is young)

These numbers are in 12-13 starts, and are pretty close to the actual player's career average.

I will say that with my relievers, some of them are higher than their career averages, some are lower. But It seems that, on Legend, at least, the numbers are pretty accurate.

As a team, I am tops in the league with 565 strikeouts, in 63 games. (8.96/game)But it isn't by a huge margin. The Brewers are second at 524.

In 2021, the average number of strikeouts per game per team per 9 innings was 8.86 So, the numbers on Legend (at least for me) are pretty realistic.

my concerns were and are what if my pitchers get better at 80+
the problem isn't that the starters strike too often
the problem is rather my relievers who strike too often from the back
i probably just have to observe it a bit and then act or put it directly on legend i have to see

maybe there is a possibility that the cpus will hit harmless instead of being strike out

how about you, how many hits and runs do you get on average per game that would be very interesting to know

I definitely like the home unis; a nice little homage to the 70s uniforms.

I think the road ones are OK; but they look a bit "busy" to me (I could understand why you might want to tweak them a bit). I wonder if simply removing the pinstripes from the pants would simplify it just a bit.

Not at home to check right now, but I can say this, I'm losing more this year than I have in years past.

I wanna say my team ERA is around 3.5, but I could be wrong, I will check more when I get home. But I have games where I give up a lot of soft ontact, without a lot of strikeouts, and games where I give up a lot of hard contacts. Thats baseball.

UPDATE: My team ERA is 3.31, 2nd in the majors.

I'm getting in my own way again and I'm dissatisfied with my franchise
I somehow don't get happy with the tigers don't become one with my team
the last few years I've always played with the orioles and was completely into it

I think I need to start over and I'm not sure who to start with

In my White Sox franchise we have completed the month of April.

My White Sox are currently in last place of the AL Central with a 9-20 record. The Twins are in the lead at 18-11. The Tigers and Guardians are in 2nd at 14-14, putting them 3.5 games behind the Twins. The Royals are ahead of us (4th in the division) at 10-19.

We absolutely cannot hit the ball. We have one hitter that is currently batting over .300. That is Andrew Benintendi, he is hitting .302 with a .343 OBP, 2 HRs and 10 RBIs. Tim Anderson has been somewhat solid for us, hitting .277 with a .313 OBP but only has 1 HR and 4 RBIs. We have 5 players batting below the Mendoza line. Andrew Vaughn has been good for us. He has a .258 average with a .311 OBP, 6 HRs and 13 RBIs.

Oscar Colas and Lenyn Sosa were doing terrible to start the year, so I made a couple of moves. I sent them both down to AAA, I brought Jake Marisnick up from the minors to play outfield for us, and then I made a trade for Tony Kemp from the Athletics. The trade looked like this:

We get: Tony Kemp
A’s get: SP A.J. Alexa and SP Kohl Simas

These moves give us a little more outfield depth, and gives us another guy that can play 2B. Elvis Andrew started off the season well, but has since fallen off the map lowering his average to .219, he does have 3 HRs and 10 RBIs.

The next big decision will be what to do with Eloy Jimenez. He has an absolutely atrocious batting average (.101) and there seems to be no end in sight.

On the pitching end, Dylan Cease has been nothing short of outstanding. He has a 1.23 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, with a 3-1 record. Reynaldo Lopez and Liam Hendriks have been great out of the bullpen. Lopez has a 1.84 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Hendriks has a 2.08 ERA with a 0.69 WHIP. Garrett Crochet also has a respectable 3.14 ERA and a surprising 1.95 WHIP.

Those guys were expected to do well this season, though. What wasn’t expected was the rest of our rotation having some rough ERAs. Kopech is somewhat respectable at 4.26 ERA and 1.8 WHIP. Lucas Giolito has a 5.64 ERA and Mike Clevinger has been awful, with a 7.20 ERA. Pitching is a significant issue that we will need to find an answer for soon.

One possible answer could be in AAA. Our #5 prospect, Sean Burke, has been killing it down there with a 2.53 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Our #26 prospect, Franklin German, has been doing extremely well also, carrying a 1.72 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. At the plate, the only prospect worth mentioning at the moment is Jose Rodriguez (our #6 prospect), he has been hitting .322, .379 OBP, and 7 RBIs.

It’s going to be LONG season, but I’m eager to continue. I signed up for a chance to turn this team around and that’s the plan for the future. Right now I just have to weather the storm.

Pitching Duds:
Spencer Howard and Alex Faedo have been struggling both with era's over 5. In pen Dennis Santana, Mychal Givens, and Packy Naughton have not been great as well.

Transactions:
Signed Brett Phillips to a 1 year deal for 2M. Sent Jackson Fraizer down to Triple A. We released Daniel Castano and recalled Jace Vines.

Injuries:

The Beavers finished up the month with a 27-30 record 13 games back of the Yankees. They are also 2 games back in the Wild Card currently. We started off the month strong but ended the month losing 8 out of 9. Our pitching was definitely our strongest as Matthew Boyd won Pitcher of the month. Going forward hopefully this team gets its act together or else we definitely will be sellers at the deadline.

Offensive Studs:
Luis Gonzalez is still leading the team in average at .291. While Hunter Renfroe has 15 home runs so far. Other guys doing well are Gary Sanchez and Isan Diaz.

Offensive Duds:
Freudis Nova hasn't been great after taking over for Drew Jackson and a couple of the bench bats have been fading.

Pitching Studs:
Matthew Boyd has been amazing with a 1.91 era while Nick Martinez has been solid with a 3.05. Also Forrest Whitley has been solid since his call up. In the pen Justin Bruhl and Reynaldo Lopez have been my bright spots.

Pitching Duds:
Recent call up Chris Vallimont hasn't been great thus far. We demoted both Spencer Howard and Alex Faedo who had been bad. The pen took a hit this month as both Givens and Bradley got hit hard.

Transactions:
Optioned Dennis Santana and recalled Andre Jackson. Called up Toby Welk and Freudis Nova. Optioned Spencer Howard and called up Forrest Whitley. Optioned Alex Faedo Ave recalled Jace Vines.

Injuries:
Drew Jackson fractured his hand 1-2 months

Pirates sweep first series of June but suffer major loss

The Pittsburgh Pirates are now 7-0 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023. The latest series saw the Pirates outscore the Cardinals 17-6 in a series that was largely dominated by Pittsburgh and although it is nice to start June with such a convincing divisional sweep, all is not well after the series.

Bryan Reynolds some how managed to break his ankle as he dove back to second base on a pickoff attempt. His current diagnosis has him out for 1-2 months so possibly July or August.

Ji-Wan Bae will be taking over in center field with Drew Maggi getting the call up to fill the roster spot and will help out when the starters need a day off.

The Pirates now stay home to face off against the Oakland Athletics (20-41/5th AL West)

**The Reynolds injury is real but Maggi probably isn't the best to call up. However, after I followed his recent IRL story of playing 13 seasons in the minors and finally getting the call up, I wanted to recreate that. He hasn't gotten his first MLB hit yet but hopefully I can help deliver that to his virtural self.

Game Story

The Padres had a rough 4 game set in Arizona against the up and coming Diamondbacks. Their 7-0 loss on Sunday was the final nail in losing 3 of 4 in the Valley of the Sun. Noted Padres killer Pavin Smith hit his 3rd home run of the season as did normally light hitting Nick Ahmed. Drey Jameson earned his first win of the season after spinning 7 shutout innings. Michael Wacha absorbed the loss and his record fell to 2-2. The Padres record now sits at 14-10 while Arizona improved to 12-11.

The Padres will next travel to Chicago for a 3 game series to take on the 9-13 Cubs.

2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: MacKenzie Gore (8-9, 3.75) vs Kyle Wright (10-6, 3.79)
Keibert Ruiz pulled a leg muscle prior to the game and will be out for a few days.

The Nationals once again got off to an early lead; Brady House walked on four pitches to start the game and Brandon Nimmo followed up with a single. They both advanced on a wild pitch before Luis Garcia grounded out to score House. Joey Meneses singled to score Nimmo, and the Nationals would force Wright to make a total of 25 pitches in the first. The Braves scored a run in the third when Jose Iglesias doubled, Ronald Acuna singled and Michael Harris hit into a fielder’s choice. Kyle Wright would then settle in for the next four innings, but would leave in the sixth after giving up a single to Luis Garcia, followed by two wild pitches and a swinging bunt by Joey Meneses that would be ruled as a fielder’s choice as Austin Riley threw home but Travis d’Arnaud could not apply the tag on Garcia. The Braves would turn to Jameson Taillon out of the bullpen, and he would pitch four shutout innings, but the Braves would only muster one more run, which came in the seventh via doubles by Jake Marisnick and Jose Iglesias off of reliever Colin Poche.

Game Two: Josiah Gray (6-11, 2.99) vs Mike Soroka (5-8, 3.32)
The Nationals continued to take advantage early in games, this time they got the early lead because of a throwing error by Austin Riley. Luis Garcia hit a two out single and then Joey Meneses hit a ground ball to Riley, who made a wide throw to first. Yadiel Hernandez would follow with a two run double. Hernandez's big day continued with a three run home run in the third. Soroka would not get out of the fourth inning, as he would be replaced by Huascar Ynoa after a two out double from Brady House. Brandon Nimmo would welcome him into the game with a two run home run to put the Nationals up 7-0. Austin Riley hit a solo home run in the fifth for Atlanta's first run. Lane Homas had to leave the game with back tightness during his at bat in the sixth, and he will likely miss a few days. Ozzie Albies singled to score Matt Olson in the seventh and Ronald Acuña and Michael Harris went back to back in the ninth to make the final more respectable, but this game belonged to the Nationals from the get go. Josiah Gray finally had run support, and was solid through six innings of one run ball.

Game Three: Zach Davies (8-8, 3.61) vs Max Fried (4-2, 2.54)
Austin Riley and William Contreras went back to back in the first, but Anderson Tejeda doubled in the second to drive in Brandon Nimmo and cut the deficit in half. The Braves responded with back to back doubles from Oswaldo Arcia and Matt Olson as well as an RBI single from Robert Neustrom. The game would remain at 4-1 until the bottom of the 8th, when Raisel Iglesias came out of the bullpen, hit Wilmer Perez and gave up a home run to Victor Robles. Kike Hernandez singled and scored when Joey Meneses hit a double off of Kenley Jansen’s first pitch, and just like that the game was tied. The Braves responded quickly, loading the bases and scoring on a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth before sending out AJ Minter to get the close in the ninth.

The Nationals took two of three against one of the best teams in the majors, and sit at 59-60 going into an important four game set against the Marlins (60-60) who currently own the second wild card position

In other news, I am nearly done with my two week vacation, so hopefully my updates will be more consistent next week. I also need to avoid playing on the airplane, as I feel like I lost two games because I was jet lagged and falling asleep. I need to be able to concentrate on the game as we are SO close to a playoff spot, which I was not even expecting in just my second season of the rebuild.

Anyone fill me in on this quick manage bug for stats? I like to play game one of each series and then quick manage the final games? But I don’t want to do it if the stats are going to be off.

The bug is triggered if you start playing a game and then quick manage part of the game. Or if you quick manage to start the game and then jump in

If you play all 9 innings or quick manage all 9 innings then your stats will be recorded properly.
