Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Me and my Dad have been following Trout since he was in HS. We were living in South Jersey at the time and he was always in the local paper. Of course they were building him up so much and I was like he’s going to be a bust. I nailed that one! 🙄

As far as my 19-17 Mets I don’t feel so bad considering how the real Mets are doing :|

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

With 18 games left the Cardinals are 1 1/2 games behind the Cubs. We took 2 of 3 from the Pirates and Braves and were feeling good until we dropped the series to the Reds. Not only that we lost Goldschmidt for the year to a shoulder injury. We’re now without Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Ryan Helsley for however long our run lasts.

Going to be a tall task. We have 3 in Baltimore coming up.

              2023 Pittsburgh Pirates 06/16-06/18

Overall Record:40-30 (1st NL Central/4.5 over Milwaukee Brewers)

              Game Results

              Game 1
              Pirates-6
              Brewers-3

              Game 2
              Brewers-6
              Pirates-5

              Game 3
              Brewers-6
              Pirates-1

Pirates end road trip with 2-1 series loss to Brewers

The first game of the Pirates series vs. the Brewers had two old timer lefties facing off as Wade Miley took the mound for Milwaukee and Rich Hill started for Pittsburgh. Miley may have pitched better as he gave up just one run in five innings and struck out six but Hill was the one who came out victorious as his offense backed up a decent seven inning performance with a five run 7th that included a triple from Andrew McCutchen that cleared the bases which were previously loaded. Jesse Winker added a two run homerun in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Pirates. Neither team would score after that and Pittsburgh took that same score as their only victory of the series. Colin Holderman recorded the save as the team gave David Bednar time to rest.

Game two saw another Pittsburgh streak end as after having pitched 25+ scoreless innings, Chase De Jong gave up his first runs of the season which allowed Milwaukee to take the 6-5 lead which they would eventually win the game with.

Game three was all Milwaukee as they hammered Pirates starter Vince Velasquez to a tune of 10 hits in just three innings as Milwaukee to the victory 6-1 and the series victory two games to one.

Pittsburgh will now head home for a three game set against the Chicago Cubs (36-36) who are tied for second in the division. Pittsburgh will look to continue their success against the Cubs as they currently swept them in their series before the one with Milwaukee.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

My White Sox have officially finished the 2024 Spring Training. We complete it with a record of 11-14.

Without further ado, here is our Opening Day roster:

                Position Players:

                C - Victor Caratini - Seby Zavala
                1B - Andrew Vaughn
                2B - Yoan Moncada
                3B - Max Muncy - Jake Burger
SS - Brandon Crawford - Matt McLain
                LF - Mauricio Dubon
                CF - Luis Robert Jr.
                RF - Billy Hamilton
DH - Eloy Jimenez - Gavin Sheets

                Pitching Rotation:

                1 - Dylan Cease
                2 - Lucas Giolito
                3 - Michael Kopech
                4 - Jerad Eickhoff
                5 - Davis Martin

                Bullpen:

                LRP - Danny Duffy
                LRP - Mike Clevinger
                MRP - Keynan Middleton
                MRP - Jimmy Lambert
                MRP - Matt Foster
                SU - Garrett Crochet
                SU - Jordan Hicks
                CL - Reynaldo Lopez

Not many surprises coming out of Spring Training. Biggest surprise was how awful Andrew Vaughn played, he hit a measly .182/.250/.288. If I had any better options at first base, he might have lost his job, but he's the main option I have there. Our catchers are AWFUL at the plate. I need a major upgrade there, otherwise it will be one automatic out in the lineup from them. Matt McLain was a Rule 5 draft pick for us. I don't know what I was actually expecting from him, but he had a great ST with a very solid on base percentage. If Brandon Crawford didn't play so well all ST, then he could have easily won the shortstop position.

I was HUGELY disappointed in Oscar Colas. If we want this rebuild to happen, we need one of our top prospects to work out for us, but Colas just continues to fail at every opportunity. Last season he batted a terrible .195/.260/.345 in 31 game opportunities (most of them coming in the September call up). This spring he did even worse, hitting .171/.227/.314. I was planning on having him manning one of those two open outfield spots, but he found a way to force me to send him back down to AAA.

On the mound, we had a very pleasant surprise from one of our starting pitcher prospects. Davis Martin had a very solid spring, so I didn't have much of a choice, he gets a starting rotation spot.

Michael Kopech was not good this spring. I'm putting him in the starting rotation to start the year, but if he comes out struggling in the first month or two, we will need to make a major decision with him.

Kendall Graveman had an awful spring, and coming off a very underwhelming season, we had no choice to but to put him down in the minors. Same thing goes for Aaron Bummer. He certainly lived up to his name this spring.

Some transactions to start the year:

Rob Refsnyder was designated for assignment
SP Gregory Santos and OFs Jo Adell and Adam Haseley were out of options, so they were placed on waivers to start the year.

Here's to a 2024 season where we hopefully show a little bit of improvement.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

My White Sox have finished the first full month of the 2024 regular season, and let me tell you, we have seen some great improvement. We currently sit at 17-14, which places us 1 game behind the division leader Guardians, who are 18-13. Here are the standings:

                  Guardians - 18-13 - -- GB
                  White Sox - 17-14 - 1.0 GB
                  Twins - 17-15 - 1.5 GB
                  Tigers - 14-18 - 4.5 GB
                  Royals - 13-19 - 5.5 GB

We are not just winning games, but we are winning series and things are looking up for this franchise.

                  Here are our hitting statistics:

                  Max Muncy - .336/.413/.718 - 12 HRs - 33 RBIs
                  Brandon Crawford - .318/.392/.495 - 3 HRs - 14 RBIs
                  Luis Robert Jr. - .277/.348/.535 - 5 HRs - 16 RBIs
                  Yoan Moncada - .272/.343/.391 - 3 HRs - 12 RBIs
                  Mauricio Dubon - .267/.313/.367 - 2 HRs - 12 RBIs
                  Eloy Jimenez - .260/.365/.767 - 12 HRs - 21 RBIs
                  Matt McLain - .250/.283/.375 - 0 HRs - 5 RBIs
                  Jake Burger - .237/.326/.579 - 3 HRs - 9 RBIs
                  Andrew Vaughn - .227/.309/.327 - 3 HRs - 15 RBIs
                  Gavin Sheets - .213/.280/.373 - 3 HRs - 7 RBIs
                  Victor Caratini - .202/.316/.333 - 3 HRs - 9 RBIs

As you can see, our averages are up across the board from last year... but even more important than that, we are doing a great job of getting on base. Even our lowest averages have OBPs above 300, which is putting us in great positions to score runs. Max Muncy is playing like an MVP, hitting for a ridiculous average, with a lot of power, and he has reaped the benefits of our higher OBPs, as he has driven in 33 RBIs already. Luis Robert Jr. looks like the guy that excited this organization before. Brandon Crawford has been a great signing so far, and Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez are starting to remind us of the old days when they showed a lot of potential.

                  Here are our pitching stats:

                  Rotation:

                  Dylan Cease - 4-0 - 1.24 ERA - 0.91 WHIP - 55 Ks
                  Lucas Giolito - 4-1 - 1.73 ERA - 1.13 - 35 Ks
                  Michael Kopech - 3-2 - 3.86 ERA - 1.37 WHIP - 27 Ks
                  Jerad Eickhoff - 1-2 - 6.53 ERA - 1.32 WHIP - 26 Ks
                  Davis Martin - 0-2 - 6.75 ERA - 1.64 WHIP - 26 Ks

                  Bullpen:

                  Matt Foster - 4.2 IP - 0.00 ERA - 1.29 WHIP - 5 Ks
                  Jimmy Lambert - 15 IP - 0.60 ERA - 0.73 WHIP - 10 Ks
                  Danny Duffy - 20 IP - 1.80 ERA - 1.25 WHIP - 16 Ks
                  Jordan Hicks - 3.2 IP - 2.45 ERA - 1.09 WHIP - 2 Ks
                  Mike Clevinger - 25.2 IP - 3.16 ERA - 1.01 WHIP - 16 Ks
                  Reynaldo Lopez - 10.1 IP - 4.35 ERA - 1.94 WHIP - 11 Ks
                  Keynan Middleton - 2.2 IP - 10.13 ERA - 1.88 WHIP - 3 Ks
                  Garrett Crochet - 3.1 IP - 10.80 ERA - 2.40 WHIP - 4 Ks

As you can see here, our starting rotation has found it's groove, especially the top of it. Dylan Cease is pitching even better so far than he did last year. Lucas Giolito has brought his A-game to start the season, and Kopech looks like he might be the guy we were hoping he would be. Danny Duffy has been outstanding out of the bullpen in his long relief role. Jimmy Lambert has been great for us in the middle relief. Jordan Hicks has been great in the little opportunity he has gotten (3.2 IP for our set up man? Really?)

The biggest issues for us on the mound has been the bottom of the rotation giving up a ton of runs and home runs. Also, Garrett Crochet has started the season in a rough patch, but he has only thrown 3.1 innings so hopefully those stats will go back down.

As we head into May, things are looking good for our White Sox. We will look to continue our winning ways as we head into the 2nd full month of the season.

Cardinals sweep the Phillies - now within 2 games of wildcard

The Cardinals (79-70) swept the Phillies in a 3 game weekend series in St.Louis to now close the gap on the final wild card spot to just 2 games. The Cardinals still trail the Cubs by 1.5 games in the NL Central, as the Cubbies are playing solid baseball.

The Cardinals won Friday night despite Jordan Montgomery (12-11) again struggling to get deep into the game. He lasted just 5 innings before being pulled having given up 4 runs on 7 hits with 4 walks. The bullpen was anchored by Tyler Alexander throwing 3 solid innings where he allowed only one baserunner and struck out 5 in those 3 innings of work. The bats would come along as well with Willson Contreras finally becoming the offensive threat the Cards were hoping for all season. Contreras would deliver 5 RBIs on 4 hits including a pair of homeruns and a double, to propel the Cards to a 9-4 win.

Saturday saw Jack Flaherty (10-9) continue to struggle on the hill as well but just like Friday night, the bullpen and the bats would carry the Cardinals to victory. Juan Yepez delivered 6 RBIs on 3 hits with a Grand Slam in the 5th inning that broke open the game. Giovanny Gallegos would close out the 6-2 victory by tossing 2 perfect innings.

Sunday was different with NL Cy Young Candidate Miles Mikolas on the mound. Mikolas would go 7 innings to earn his 19th win of the season (19-5) but did struggle giving up 3 runs in the 5th. Mikolas finished with 8 strikeouts. Trevor Rosenthal would earn his 12th save of the season. Paul DeJong made an appearance with 3 RBIs and Tyler O'Neill pitched in 2 of his own to lead the Cards to the 6-4 win.

The Cardinals will stay home for a 4 game series with the Brewers starting Monday night.

                          2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: Sixto Sanchez (8-8, 3.94) vs Lucas Giolito (8-9, 3.88)
The Marlins scored their first run in the second; Jake Fraley hit a lead off single and advanced to second on a pitch in the dirt. He would then score when Brandon Belt hit a two out single down the left field line. Washington, as has they have done so often during this hot stretch, was able to counter in the bottom of the second when CJ Abrams hit a two out, two run triple. Joey Meneses hit a two out double in the third, and then scored when Yadiel Hernandez singled. The Marlins fought back in the fourth, tying the game with a lead off walk by Jake Fraley, a double from Jesus Sanchez and then consecutive sac flies from Jorge Soler and Brandon Belt. The Nationals offense went off in the eighth, scoring eight runs and bringing thirteen men to the plate. Kike Hernandez drove in two with a bases loaded single, and Brady House hit a three run home run two batters later. Joey Meneses drove in a run on a single which was then followed by a two run double by Yadiel Hernandez. The Nationals win big, although they did have to use four bullpen arms as Giolito only went five innings.

Game Two: Sandy Alcantara (14-7, 2.21) vs Stephen Strasburg (11-7, 2.00)
This game almost had a playoff atmosphere to it as the teams both entered at 60-60 and tied for the last wild card spot with their aces on the mound. Both pitchers walked the first batters they faced but it was the Nationals scoring first when Yadiel Hernandez hit a sac fly with bases loaded in the bottom of the first. Miami would take the lead when Brian Anderson, who always hurts Washington, hit a two run home run in the third. Miami added one more run in the fifth with back to back singles from Nick Fortes and Miguel Rojas followed by a double play ball from Yolmer Sanchez that allowed Fortes to score from third. Stephen Strasburg would leave after just 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out six. Sandy Alcantara was dominant after the first inning, going 7 innings and giving up one run on three hits, walking two and striking out five. But the Nationals once again would not go down without a fight. They rallied in the ninth off of Cole Sulser; starting the inning with a base hit from Luis Garcia, followed by a wild pitch, a walk to Joey Meneses, a hit by pitch to Keibert Ruiz, and a two out, two strike single double from Kike Hernandez to tie the game. Andrew Vaughn would strike out looking on a questionable pitch that just missed the outside corner, sending the game into extras. Kyle Finnegan went two flawless innings, but gave up a sac fly in the eleventh and felt soreness in his shoulder, and would have to leave the game*. The Nationals once again rallied with two down, this time it was Victor Robles who came through, pinch hitting for Keibert Ruiz against lefty Joey Wentz. He hit a single to left center to score Luis Garcia and tie the game. Carl Edwards Jr pitched a flawless top of the twelfth and Kike Hernandez would come through once again in the bottom half, hitting a game winning double and giving the Nationals one of their best wins of the year.

*Kyle Finnegan’s injury was worse than expected. It is a pulled shoulder and he will miss 1-2 weeks. He has been placed on the 15-day IL. Hunter Harvey has been called up to replace him.

Game Three: Jesus Luzardo (7-7, 2.96) vs MacKenzie Gore (9-9, 3.66)
Brandon Drury was activated from the IL prior to the game and will be in the lineup batting fourth. Sean Doolittle was sent back to AAA to make room on the roster for Drury. Everything seems to be going right for the Nationals now. They took the lead in the first when Victor Robles hit a leadoff blooper that he stretched into a double. He then advanced to third on a long fly out by Kike Hernandez, then scored on a groundout by Andrew Vaughn. Jordan Groshans was injured diving for the ground ball and had to be replaced by Brian Anderson*. Gleyber Torres led off the fourth inning with a triple as the Marlins defense was playing him to pull, and he scored when Anderson Tejeda hit a line drive up the middle. Then it was Miami’s turn to rally; they scored one in the fifth on a Miguel Rojas single, and then Jake Fraley connected for a three run home run in the sixth. Brandon Drury responded with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, giving him a double and a home run in his return to the squad. Then, with two down in the eighth, Gleyber Torres wrapped a home run around the left field foul pole to tie the game at 4. Once again Miami would rally, getting three runs in the tenth after Jazz Chisholm walked and Jorge Soler connected in a hanging cutter from Carl Edwards Jr. The Nationals would AGAIN come back in the bottom of the tenth. Andrew Vaughn hit a lead off double to score the ghost runner, Brandon Nimmo. Brandon Drury singled to advance Vaughn to third before Joey Meneses struck out. Gleyber Torres followed with a sacrifice fly, and then following a wild pitch to advance Drury to second, Anderson Tejeda singled to tie the game at 7. Carl Edwards would remain in the game; the bullpen had been taxed already and the Nationals needed to save some arms for the next game. Joe Mack would lead the inning off with a single to put the Marlins up 8-7, and that would be the final shot in this one. The Nationals had a chance in the bottom of the eleventh; CJ Abrams moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Victor Robles lined out and Brandon Nimmo, who just missed a double down the line the pitch before, would strike out on a slider to end the game.

Game Four: Trevor Rogers (6-12, 4.10) vs Josiah Gray (7-11, 2.93)
Trevor Rogers left after just 1.1 innings with tightness in his back, and was replaced by Joey Wentz, who would go three innings of one hit ball, but would be tagged with the loss when Keibert Ruiz reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Victor Robles singled. That would be the only offense until the sixth inning when Andrew Vaughn led off with a walk, Brandon Drury singled and Lane Thomas hit a three run home run. The Marlins offense was non-existent, they would muster three hits off of Josiah Gray, who pitched a complete game shutout on just 77 pitches. Miami has to be disappointed after such a terrible performance at the plate, and to add insult to injury they lose this series and are once again behind Washington in the battle for the second Wild Card position.

The Nationals (62-61) remain hot and with just six weeks left in the season, there is a feeling in the capital that maybe, just maybe, this team will make the postseason.

The Beavers finished up the month with a 43-42 record 14 games back of the Yankees. They are also 2 games back in the Wild Card currently. June started off slow but towards the end we got in a groove and went 11-5 to end the month. Still debating if I'm going to be buyers or sellers as we get closer to the Trade deadline.

                            Offensive Studs:
Luis Gonzalez is still leading the team in average at .298 while Hunter Renfroe has 24 Home runs. Some other guys producing in the lineup are: Keston Hiura, Edwin Rios, and Lewin Diaz.

                            Offensive Duds:
Gary Sanchez is starting to fall off a bit hitting.219 will look to move him down in the order. Also some of the bench bats haven't been great.

                            Pitching Studs:
Both Nick Martinez and Matthew Boyd have been great thus far definitely will look to add a starter if we are in the position to do so. Reynaldo Lopez is still rolling along with a 1.84 ERA and 26 saves. Tyler Rogers has been great since being claimed off waivers.

                            Pitching Duds:
Rotation is solid right now, long relief and late inning need to be addressed at the deadline.

                            Transactions:
We traded David Hamilton and Keyber Rodriguez to the Athletics for Drew Steckenrider. Released Mychal Givens. Claimed Tyler Rogers from the Giants. Optioned Andre Jackson to Triple A. Called up Sherten Apostel and demoted Toby Welk. Claimed Nick Avila from the Mariners. Claimed Taylor Motter from the Cardinals. Optioned Freudis Nova to Triple A. Claimed Andre Pallante from the Cardinals.

                            Injuries:
                            No one this monthPortlandBeaversLogo2008.jpeg

Cubs return the favor with sweep of Pirates

Just a week ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates swept the Chicago Cubs. After that series, Chicago went on to sweep the Baltimore Orioles and then continued that streak with a three game sweep of Pittsburgh.

The Pirates increased their run total by one in each game of the series. Unfortunately, they didnt score any in the first game so with that, they only scored one in game two and two in game three.

Justine Steele dominated the Pirate hitters in game one (8.0 IP, 3 H) and Brad Boxberger came through with the almost flawless save, his 19th on the year. In the game Trey Mancini knocked in two and Edwin Rios had an rbi of his own in the Cubs 3-0 victory.

The pitching has been fine for the Pirates but the offense is struggling yet again. The team will try to put a stop to their losing streak as they head to Miami for a four game set against the Marlins (33-42/4th NL East)
