The Cardinals have made a huge splash in the free agent market signing reigning NL Cy Young award winner Julio Urias to a deal. The Cards the 27 year old agreed to a 3 year/$100MM deal with an option for a 4th year. This will mean the lefty will hit the free agent market again.
Urias is coming off an outstanding year in which he won 20 games, won the National League Cy Young award , and won a World Series Championship. Urias was 20-2 with a 2.90 ERA over 214 innings pitched.
His signing boosts a rotation that has seen Jack Flaherty resign, as well as Jordan Montgomery (4 years) and Miles Mikolas (1 year). That gives the Cardinals a solid 4 arms in the rotation and they can look to add via free agency or they can get the 5th starter from Dakota Hudson, Matthew Liberatore, Packy Naughton, or Michael McGreevy.
Big time get the Redbirds
The Cardinals brought back a fan favorite when they signed CF Harrison Bader to a 4 year deal. The 29 year old signed a 4 year $45MM deal to come back to St.Louis. Bader was traded to the Yankees for Jordan Montgomery in the '22 season, but was not signed by the Yankees and hit the open market. The Cardinals quickly pounced on him as they look to strengthen their outfield. Bader will take over duties in center with Tyler O'Neill shifting to left and Carlson will play right field. Lars Nootbaar will likely be the 4th outfield option, unless the Cards decide to move him and make Jordan Walker the 4th outfielder, although there is some speculation in the front office that Walker could start the year in AAA, unless he has a breakout spring, given his struggles later in the season last year.
Still this is a good problem for the Redbirds to have after depth was a major concern last year as injuries piled up.
