    2024 Pittsburgh Pirates 04/01-04/03

    Overall Record:
    5-1 (1st NL Central/1.0 over Cubs,Brewers and Reds)

    Game Results

    Game 1
    Pirates-6
    Nationals-1

    Game 2
    Pirates-6
    Nationals-5 (10 innings)

    Game 3
    Pirates-8
    Nationals-3

Pirates sweep Nats to end homestand at 5-1

The Pirates swept the Nationals to end their season opening homestand but in typical Pirate fashion, they didnt make it easy on themselves. The Pirates won game one pretty easily, 6-1. In the game both Oneil Cruz and Anthony Santander hit their first homers of the season.

Game two was where it started to get interesting as Mitch Keller (pirates) faced off against Cade Cavalli (Nationals). Pittsburgh did get out to an early 3-0 lead after five but Washington was able to match that and surpass that with a run in the sixth and four in the eighth. The Pirates fought back though and scored one in the 8th and 9th and eventually the 10th on a Rodolfo Castro walkoff Buddy Kennedy single.

Game three was also interesting after it looked like Pittsburgh may cruise to the early season sweep. CJ Cron got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first with his fourth HR of the season that made the score 2-0. However, the Pirates would not score again until the 8th inning. In the mean time, the Nationals had a big inning in the 5th as the likes of Brady House, Israel Pireda and Sal Frelick hit in RBI's to make the score at the time 3-2 Nationals.

As Mentioned before, that lead would remain intact until the Pirates had a monster 8th inning that included. Andrew McCutchen's first homerun of the 2024 season. By the end of the inning, Pittsburgh was winning 8-3. Unfortunately, that meant David Bednar would not have his first shot for a save of the season. Jordan Hicks came into the 9th inning and got the Nats three up three down as the Pirates took the game 8-3 and the series 3-0.

The Pirates will now head on the road for the first time in 2024 and face their divisional foe, the Cincinnati Reds (4-2)

I think the 2023 MLB Franchise mode is fantastic! Great job. But now I have completed the 2023 Season and found that the 2024 Season [Season2] is not the same as the Official MLB Schedule. This is not a big problem but I use to copy the real MLB schedule and know who I would be playing next in the future. However, I am adjusting to the fact that Season 2 on MLB the Show 23 will not be the same schedule as the real 2024 Major League Schedule.

One other thing I would like to share. Many times when I played MLB the Show, and it could be in any inning, the screen would freeze, the go black and ask me if I wanted to make a report. Then restart the game and have to start the game I was playing from the 1st inning all over again. This sometimes happened more than once playing this game on the same day. What I found is when you turn off your MLB The Show 23, you will see a flashing yellow light at the front of your Playstation Unit. Do NOT go to regular TV channels until this flashing yellow light completely stops flashing and remains one color. It is not safe to turn off Playstation and returned to normal channels. This has helped alot. However should your game freeze make out report and send it in. They will thank you and then when you return to your game and start it again it will return to the exact spot you were at when the game froze and will not have to start the entire game over again. It has worked for me and I hope it works for you.

Cardinals drop series to Braves in Atlanta

The Cardinals (15-14) dropped a 3 game series to the Braves in Atlanta over the weekend. The Cardinals dropped the series opener Friday night and the series finale on Sunday.

It was a rough series for the Cardinals and their pitching staff. The Braves bats were hot hitting 10 homeruns in the series and scored 21 runs total, including 13 on Sunday alone. The Cardinals reverted back to their previous faults in not being able to drive in runs.

After an off day on Monday, the Cards will travel north of the border to take on the Blue Jays in a 3 game series.

Reid Detmers to 60 Day IL with shoulder injury

The Cardinals rotation and pitching staff took a blow Friday night when Reid Detmers left in the 2nd inning with a shoulder injury. After the game it was revealed that Detmers has a tear in his shoulder that will require a lengthy stay on the IL. The Cardinals hope he will return around the first part of July.

Detmers was acquired in the offseason from the Angels to help add experience and reliability to the rotation. Detmers has struggled with the long ball this season, but all in all has been solid during his turn on the mound.

Copper Hjerpe was recalled from Memphis to take the vacant spot on both the roster and rotation.

Cardinals close out April with series win against Blue Jays

The Cardinals (17-15) took 2 games of a 3 game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto to close out the month of April. The Cardinals find themselves 1.5 games behind the division leading Pirates.

The Cardinals had an opportunity to sweep the Jays but were unable to put together any offense on Thursday as they were shutout. Harrison Bader had a great series with 3 homeruns, 8 RBIs and recording a total of 7 hits. Jack Flaherty was strong as well in his start going 7 innings with 10 strikeouts and allowing just 2 hits.

The Cardinals will return home as the Orioles come to town to start the month of May.

Cardinals drop series to Orioles as bats fall silent

The Cardinals (18-17) dropped a 3 game series to the Orioles over the weekend in St.Louis. After winning Friday night's contest due great pitching from Jameson Taillon, the Cardinals would lose Saturday and Sunday combining to score just 1 run on just 5 total hits.

Jameson Taillon went 8 innings in his win on Friday night and was brilliant during those innings. Taillon allowed just one run on 4 hits and fanned 8. The Orioles just kept making weak contact as he kept them off balance. And his dominance helped as the Cards offense only put up 4 runs themselves, thanks mostly to a 3 run bomb by Ivan Herrera in the 5th.

Saturday was horrifying as Matthew Liberatore was knocked around and chased after 3.1 innings. He gave up 8 runs on 7 hits and issued 4 walks. The bullpen wasn't much better as the Cardinals would get destroyed 15-1.

Sunday saw Dakota Hudson pitch a gem, but the offense score no runs, and mount no threat. The Cardinals scored no runs on just 2 hits in a game that went 11 innings. Alex Reyes gave up a 2 run homerun to Ryan Mountcastle in the 11th, that was the difference in the game.

The Cardinals stay home as the Dodgers come to town. The Cardinals swept the Dodgers in LA about a month ago. Hopefully the bats wake up for this series.

Cardinals sweep Dodgers for 2nd time this season

The Cardinals (21-17) swept a 3 game series with the Dodgers for the 2nd time this season. The Cardinals and Dodgers will not meet again in the regular season, so the Cardinals will finish with a perfect record of 6-0 against the team that has been their nemesis in the postseason.

The Cardinals played soundly in all facets of the game during the series. Harrison Bader continues to swing it well with 4 doubles in the series. The bullpen pitched 7.1 innings of perfect baseball.

The Cardinals will be off on Thursday as they travel to Boston for a 3 game weekend series with the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Wow CB, you're really putting in the time now! Love it! It seems like our franchises are both in a similar spot right now: One series is fantastic...and then the team starts a new series and looks the polar opposite of what it was prior. A sneak peak into my front office: Every time the Nats look like their about to fall apart I come up with a plan to sell at the deadline, and then they'll take a series against say, Philadelphia.

                  2024 Washington Nationals

                  Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies

Game One: Lucas Giolito (3-3, 4.35) vs Zach Wheeler (4-4, 3.77)
The Phillies got off to a fast start, scoring one run in the first on a single bfy Bryce Harper and then scoring four more in the third. Bad news for the Phils though, as JT Realmuto was injured sliding into home and had to leave the game*. Anthony Rizzo would hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Brady House would drive in Lane Thomas, who reached after a strikeout on a wild pitch followed by an errant throw to first, allowing him to go to second. Josiah Gray would enter the game from the bullpen to start the bottom of the fourth, he would give the Nats a solid 4 innings, giving up a run on three hits and striking out three. Zach Warren would pitch the eighth and give up a two run home run to Bryson Stott. The 8-2 deficit was too much for Washington to overcome, and the Nats could only manage 5 hits off of the Phillies pitchers in a lopsided affair.

*JT Realmuto has an ACL sprain and will miss 1-2 weeks

Game Two: Stephen Strasburg (3-3, 2.96) vs Ranger Suarez (4-3, 4.91)
Anthony Rizzo hit a solo home run in the second to give the Nats an early lead. Rizzo is second in the majors with 18 home runs, and the combination of both he and Mitch Haniger has really been the saving grace for Washington so far in 2024. The Nats would score their second run in the third when Kike Hernandez grounded out to score Wilmer Perez, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a base hit from Brady House before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Bryson Stott would get Philadelphia on the board with an RBI base hit in the fourth, and it looked like Philadelphia might be able to pull off a victory. Stephen Strasburg would leave after five innings with the lead still intact, but he did give up nine hits while walking one and only striking out two. Meanwhile, Ranger Suarez dominated the Nationals. He gave up the two runs on only two base hits, walking one and striking out four in 6.1 innings of work. The Nationals would open the game up in the eighth getting base hits from Victor Robles and Wilmer Perez before Kike Hernandez took Sam Coonrod deep for a three run home run. That would be the end of the offense in this game, as Zach Warren, Hunter Harvey, Aaron Bummer and Carl Edwards Jr each threw shutout innings to even the series at a game apiece.

Game note: Tyler Soderstrom, acquired by Philadelphia in free agency following the 2022 season, made his MLB debut at catcher and singled in his first at bat.

Game Three: Felipe Escalona (2-1, 4.95) vs Martin Perez (4-3, 3.26)
Kike Hernandez homered in the first and Anthony Rizzo hit one in the fourth to put Washington up 2-0. Felipe Escalona pitched well, giving up one run on six hits, not walking anyone and striking out just four. He had trouble commanding his pitches but gave up a lot of weak contact. The Phillies would tie the game in the ninth when Aaron Bummer gave up a base hit to Brandon Marsh, who advanced to second when Bryce Harper dropped down a sac bunt (!?). Marsh reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball by Alec Bohm. CJ Abrams relaxed Mitch Haniger as the ghost runner in the tenth, and would advance to third when Bryce Harper couldn’t make a play on a ball to right center from Luis Garcia. It could have been an RBI double, but the runners had to hold to make sure Harper didn’t catch the ball. Harper would then leave the game following the play with an apparent hip injury, which could spell disastrous for Philadelphia.* Keibert Ruiz would be able to drive in Abrams, and also allowed Garcia to go first to third; Brandon Nimmo would then hit a sac fly to give the Nats a 4-2 lead. Philly would get one run off of Trevor Rosenthal in the tenth when Edmundo Sosa drove in Matt Beaty, but Arnez flew out, Sosa was caught stealing and Matt Vierling struck out to end the ballgame.

*Bryce Harper has an inflamed hip and will miss 1-2 weeks

The Nationals (28-24) take two of three from Philadelphia for the second time in a week, and this time they did not even get much production from Mitch Haniger. Washington is now second in the NL East and is 7-3 in their last ten games. They will now fly to the West Coast to take on the Giants (26-27) before coming back to DC to take on the Dodgers (35-17) in a wild scheduling situation.

Cardinals take series from Red Sox at Fenway

The Cardinals (23-18) took another series, this time from the Red Sox in Boston over Mother's Day Weekend.

The Cardinals won both Friday night and Sunday behind good pitching and a strong bat from Nolan Arenado. Arenado finished the series with 6 RBIs with a homerun and 3 doubles. Saturday the Cardinals saw Dakota Hudson leave in the 5th inning with elbow discomfort. The bats couldn't get anything going in a 2-1 loss. For now, Hudson is listed as day-to-day.

The pitching staff was strong overall in the series as they held Rafael Devers and Shohei Ohtani to a combined 0 for 24.

Next up the Cardinals are off on Monday as they travel to Kansas City for a brief 2 game series before returning home to face the Rockies next weekend.

Thought about starting a new one but ended up continuing my Mets Franchise I started back in April. I'm in 2026 half way through but after this recent hot streak the real life team has been on (LFGM ) I am itching to get a new one going with the updated rosters

Has anyone added in the draft picks and/or Japanese players coming over (Yammamoto and Lee)? And if so how do you handle them for 2023? Thanks!

The Pittsburgh Pirates are out to an early hot start and are currently tied with their divisional foe Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the MLB.

Their most recent series saw them hit the road for the first time in 2024 as they travelled to Cincinnati to take on the Reds who at the time sat at 4-2 on the year.

Game one saw Blake Snell make win his first game of 2024 as he pitched 6 innings allowed just three hits and struck out 10. In all, the Pittsburgh pitching staff had 15 strikeouts of Reds hitters in the game. All six of the Pirates runs were scored via homerun to include a 5th inning grand slam by Anthony Santander. Andrew McCutchen and Endy Rodriguez added solo shots of their own.

Game 2 was a pitchers dual between Roansy Contreras and Eury Perez as the game went into extras tied 1-1. Oneil Cruz put three runs on the board in the 10th with a three run shot. The Reds were able to get a run on their own but David Bednar shut the door after that for his first save of the new year.

The Pirates couldnt get anything going in game three as they managed just two hits and one run in the 2-1 loss.

The Pirates will remain on the road to face off with the Diamondbacks (3-7/4th NL West)
