Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

    Sept 29 - Oct 1: PRESCOTT (78-84) @ FLAGSTAFF (87-75)
    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

    September 29: Hot Shots 2, Hops 0
    September 30: Hot Shots 3, Hops 2 (12)
    October 1: Hops 1, Hot Shots 0

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff managed to eek out a win in the finale to win the Mountain League West in wire-to-wire fashion as they were in first place the entire season. This was a tight three game series with great pitching and very little offense with the teams combining for only eight runs in the three games.

In the opener, the Hot Shots got a great pitching performance from Kelly Wolf as they shutout the Hops 2-0 to drop Flagstaff into a tie with Salt Lake for first place in the ML West. The Hops have now lost five straight.

Kelly Wolf (17-8) tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out five and walking two. The Prescott bullpen allowed just one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings with Xavier Doyle working a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 16th save.

Offensively, the Hot Shots would get all that they would need in the second on a McGill bases loaded sacrifice fly. They would add a huge insurance run in the top of the ninth on an Alexis Lerma two-out, RBI single.

Ramon Garcia (12-8) took the loss, but he pitched well again. He went five innings, allowing one run and scattering seven hits while striking out five and walking one. Russell Fluty tossed three shutout innings in relief.

The loss dropped the Hops into a tie for first place. They have been in first since opening day but now are tied with Salt Lake and just one game ahead of Rio Rancho for the second Wild Card in the Mountain League with just two games left in the regular season.

On Saturday evening, the Hops would lose their sixth straight as they dropped a 3-2 decision in 12 innings. The Hot Shots only managed four hits in the game, but pulled out the win. The loss means that the ML West title will be decided on the final day of the season. Flagstaff has lead the division since opening day, but is tied with one game left in the season.

Prescott grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth after Paul Knapp doubled with one out and advanced to third on a Shoe-Lace O’Tying wild pitch. He then scored on a Matt Olson sacrifice fly to put the Hot Shots in front 1-0.

Oscar Aleman would change that in the bottom half with a two-run home run to left, his 18th on the year.

But Prescott immediately responded as Noah Wilson homered to left, his 13th on the season to tie the game at 2-2.

It would remain that way into the twelfth with Prescott only having two hits through 11 innings. In the 12th, they would get an infield single from Willie Reece with one out. He would steal second and then Khris Kovach muscled a bloop single to right that just fell over Josh Ortega to score Reece with the go ahead run.

The Hops would go down 1-2-3 to end it and their season will now rest on one game.

Hops pitchers struck out 18 batters in the game with Shoe-Lace O’Tying increasing his ML lead as he recorded nine in seven innings of work. Oliver Benedict worked three scoreless innings of relief and recorded seven strikeouts.

Flagstaff has been a train wreck since early July, but a win on Sunday will put them into the postseason.

In the finale, Josh Ortega hit a solo home run in the first, his 40th on the season, and Ryan Pressley made that stand up in a 1-0 victory for the Hops that clinched the ML West title.

Pressley (15-11) tossed eighth shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five with no walks. Vic Miller would work a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his 45th save and a division title for Flagstaff.

Kolby McAllister (10-10) was the hard luck loser for Prescott, throwing six innings and allowing just the one run on three hits, while striking out six and not issuing a walk.

Flagstaff (87-75) will face Austin in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. The schedule will be determined later this week.

Around the League: Josh Heupel hit his 50th home run on the season, and drove in two, as Gilbert defeated Salt Lake 10-7 to move into a tie for first place in the DL East. Their win, coupled with a Chandler loss, leaves the teams at (95-65) with two games left in the regular season.

Las Vegas was eliminated from playoff contention with a 7-5 loss in San Diego. Mark Mulder went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Seals to the victory.

Scottsdale scored five in the top of the first, then held on for a 9-6 victory over Glendale to open a big three game series to decide the DL Central crown. Mark Griffin went 4 for 5 with a home run to lead the Scorpions to the win and a two game lead with two games left in the regular season.

Mesa clinched the second Desert League Wild Card spot with a 10-2 victory at Long Beach. Clyde Floyd went 2 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Solar Sox into the playoffs after a last place finish in 2022.

Austin clinched the ML East despite a 5-2 loss to Fort Worth, as San Antonio dropped a 4-3 decision at home to last lace Amarillo. The defending champions Javelinas will miss the postseason and will not have a chance to defend their title.

El Paso tied it up on the ninth and won it in the 12th as they slipped past Roswell 8-6 to move two games ahead of Santa Fe in the ML Central. Rio Rancho defeated Albuquerque 6-2 to keep the pressure on Salt Lake and Flagstaff for the second ML Wild Card spot.

Salt Lake defeated St George 3-1 to win for the sixth time in seven outings. Julio Cervantes two-run home run, his sixth, was the difference as the Chukars keep the pressure on Flagstaff.

On Saturday night, Steve Heupel homered again, his 51st, plus added a double and three RBIs as Gilbert defeated Salt River 6-3 to take over first place in the DL East. Heupel looks like the runaway MVP of the Desert League.

Scottsdale clinched the DL Central on Saturday evening with a 5-4 victory over Glendale. Tanner Bell’s three run home run in the top of the seventh put the Scorpions in front for good and sends Scottsdale into the playoffs with a first round matchup with Henderson on the horizon.

Austin clinched the ML East with a 4-3 walk off victory over Fort Worth. Chris Richardson’s solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth sends Austin into the playoffs for the first time. The bigger news may have been the loss of outfielder Blip Sanders, who injured his right knee diving awkwardly for a ball in the fourth inning. Sanders will be lost for the season. He was hitting .259 with 23 home runs and 72 RBIs for the Fire Frogs.

El Paso clinched the ML Central with a 6-2 victory over Roswell. Six different players drove in runs for the Blue Rocks as they will make their IBL playoff debut in 2023.

Albuquerque did Flagstaff a huge favor as they defeated Rio Rancho 8-6 on Saturday night, which means any combination of a Flagstaff win or Rio Rancho loss will clinch a playoff berth for the Hops.

Salt Lake dropped a 6-3 decision to St George on Saturday night. Jamaal McCormick’s three run home run in the sixth off of Thor Odinson (14-12) moved the Archers in front and they held on to end a five game losing streak as well as snap the Chukars four game winning streak. The loss gives Flagstaff the opportunity to win the ML West if they can win the final two games over Prescott.

On Sunday afternoon, Gilbert clinched the DL East with a 6-5 extra innings victory over Salt River. The Barnstormers scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5 on a Steve Heupel two-run double, then won it with a Jonathan Tunick RBI single in the 12th.

Rio Rancho rallied from a 5-0 deficit, scoring three in the top of the ninth capped off by a Bill Olson two-run home run, to defeat Albuquerque 6-5 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile Salt Lake dropped a 4-3 decision to St George. That leaves Salt Lake and Rio Rancho tied at (86-76). The teams will play a one game playoff on Monday evening to determine the second ML Wild Card team.

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 World Series Game Six @ New York Mets

      Series: Mets 3-2

Making the trip back to New York was all that Chicago could ask for after falling down 3-0 in the series, and managing to win Game Four and Game Five gave them plenty of momentum to ride back to the Big Apple. With Dylan Cease on the mound, the White Sox knew that they had their ace on the mound coming off one of the better performances of the postseason for him, despite the loss in Game Two. Justin Verlander, the pitcher who defeated him in that game, was positioned with a chance to give the Mets their third World Series Title.

Both pitchers would battle through some struggles in the first inning to work out of trouble, but it would be the road team that would strike first in the second inning. Gavin Sheets would get the scoring started with a two run homer after a Seby Zavala double, putting the White Sox up 2-0.

It wouldn’t take too long before the Mets would match Chicago on the scoreboard though, as Luis Guillorme would knock in Mark Canha with a single to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Brandon Nimmo would continue his amazing World Series tear with an opposite field home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, barely scraping the top of the left field wall.

Both Verlander and Cease work quickly through the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Luis Robert would walk and steal second base before Oscar Colas would follow with a walk as well. Joey Lucchesi would be brought in the game to try and work out of the jam for New York. Feeling that runs would be tough late in the game, Chicago decided to try and lay down a bunt with Yoan Moncada, but Pete Alonso would force Colas out at second. Moncada would steal second a few pitches later to put runners at second and third with Zavala at the plate and one out. Zavala would strike out on a curveball in the dirt, and Sheets would follow with a ball hit up the middle that Lucchesi would knock down with his foot and put the inning to rest with no runs scored.

Cease entered the top of the sixth and promptly got Alonso to ground out on the first pitch. Francisco Lindor would catch a slider on the outer corner and manage to flip it over the third baseman for a hit. He would then steal second with Jeff McNeil at the plate, which proved crucial after McNeil rolled over for a grounder to second. Nimmo would then get a hanging changeup from Cease and doubled to deep right, putting the Mets up 3-2. Aaron Bummer would come in and get Baty to ground out.

In the top of the seventh, Andrew Benintendi would double down the left field line with two outs. This put Eloy Jimenez to the plate in a spot to tie the game, and Jimenez would deliver with his third single of the day to drive in Benintendi to tie the game. Robert would walk again, but Colas could not get the clutch hit and the score remained tied through seven innings.

John Curtiss would work quickly through the top of the eighth for the Mets. Yency Almonte had provided the last two outs of the seventh inning and continued in the bottom of the eighth. Guillorme would single to left, and Alonso would do the same to right. Two runners on and nobody out, Almonte got a grounder back to him and forced the runner out at third. Still two on, one out, Almonte would get a line out from McNeil to Moncada at third, and follow it up with one from Nimmo as well to leave the game tied at 3-3 heading into the ninth.

Edwin Diaz would come in for the Mets, but Jake Burger led the top of ninth with a walk. Tim Anderson would pop up two pitches later. Benintendi then hit a sharp grounder that Alonso knocked down to get him out, but Burger moved to third. Jimenez would then come in and hit a deep drive to left….. that fell at the warning track for the third out.

Kendall Graveman would come in the bottom of the ninth, attempting to send the game to extra innings. He would strike out Baty in quick fashion before Canha would grass for a single to left. Graveman would then leave a slider out of the plate and Francisco Alvarez would drive it hard into right center. Canha hustled around third just as the ball was thrown back into the infield, but the throw from Yoan Moncada wasn’t close.. the Mets had won the World Series in walk off fashion with a score of 4-3!!

A disappointing ending for the White Sox after a miracle run from being the last wild card spot from the American League, but leaves the team with a lot of confidence. Unfortunately, Chicago just simply ran too hot and cold against a New York team that was the best in baseball from the first game until the last. Brandon Nimmo was named World Series MVP.

There are many questions surrounding the White Sox heading into the off-season, where they are expected to take advantage of the World Series push to try and make it back to the postseason and make another run. Keys thing will be figuring out how to fill a spot at second base, whether by signing a third baseman to move Moncada over or attempting to get postseason breakout Jake Burger a starting spot at third, and one of the rotation spots with Mike Clevinger looking to test free agency again. Like all teams, trying to improve the bullpen is another key. There’s a lot of returning pieces though, headlined by hopefully a healthier season in 2024 for Eloy Jimenez, the AL postseason MVP who hit .313 with 9 homers and 22 RBI in 20 games after leading the AL in homers and RBI in just 100 games in the regular season.

Very disappointing end of the season, to fall short after making it that far, but man what a series! As much fun as I have had in this game! Game one - walk off loss in extras, game two - 2-1 loss, game three blow out win for the Mets to put me down 3-0, then a blow out win in game four before a walk of our own in game five, before this walk off loss. What a series!

We just lost Tyler Glasnow and Brendan Donovan for the season in back to back games against the Rangers.

Glasnow was 9-7 but his record doesn’t reflect how well he’s pitched. He had a 3.06 ERA and was in the top 10 in strikeouts.

Donovan was hitting .295 batting 9th in the lineup. Was doing a tremendous job turning lineup over and driving in runs with 2 outs.

With about a month to go and us likely going to the playoffs, this stings big time

ML PLAYOFF GAME: SALT LAKE (86-77) @ RIO RANCHO (87-76)
            Stadium: Intel Field (Capacity: 5,796)

            October 2: Owlz 3, Chukars 1

Rio Rancho, NM (AP) - The Rio Rancho Owlz got a three-run home run from Wesley Watson in the second inning and made that stand up as they defeated Salt Lake 3-1 to win the one game playoff and advance to the Mountain League Wild Card. The Owlz will face Santa Fe as three teams from the Mountain League Central qualified for the playoffs.

Salt Lake managed to knock out ten hits in the ballgame and had plenty of chances to score, but left ten men on base in the loss that ends their season in game 163. The Chukars would grab a first inning lead after Pablo Gomes lead the game off with a single and stole second. He would then score on an RBI single from Darell McCloud, but that would be the only scoring that the Chukars would do the entire game.

In the second inning, Ferreira walked to open the inning and Martin Bannerman singled. Wesley Watson then blasted a three-run home run to right off of Len Rainey to make it 3-1. That would end the scoring in this one.

Len Rainey (10-10) pitched well, allowing those three runs on only four hits in six innings of work. Felipe Miranda (9-8) got the win for Rio Rancho. He went six innings, allowing one run on seven hits. The Chukars had a chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth off of reliever McIntyre after back-to-back singles from Adolfo Villarreal and J.P. Grant to open the inning. But McIntyre got Darell McCloud to pop out, then got Geronimo to bounce into a 3-6-3 to end the inning.

Closer Brian Lopez worked a 1-2-3 ninth to end Salt Lake’s season as he picked up his 40th save.

With my Guardians franchise falling short in year 2, I've decided to change my plan.

So for anyone who cares, I'm swimming year 3 and seeing what happens. Because I've been really dying to do a real true rebuild. Cleveland is too good in the game to do an actual rebuild. I do want to win the WS with my home town team but......

Colorado is my choice. Complete tear down and rebuild of this failed franchise. Bad contracts, not much in the minors, lack of pitching, small market team. This should be real interesting.

                      2024 Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals (11-11) vs New York Mets (13-10)

Game One: Lucas Giolito vs Tylor Megill
The Nationals scored twice in the first, via doubles from Luis Garcia, Andrew Vaughn and Mitch Haniger. The Mets scored a run in the second on a double from Tyler Stephenson, who would then tie the game in the third with another double. This was followed by doubles from Brett Baty and Casey Golden to put New York up 4-2 after four. The Nationals took the lead back in the fifth when Anthony Rizzo hit a three run home run. Washington would add an insurance run in the eighth when Kike Hernandez hit a pinch hit single and a second run in the ninth when Mitch Haniger hit an RBI double off of Josh Hader, who was brought in despite his team trailing by two runs.

Game Two: Josiah Gray vs Sean Reid-Foley
The Mets scored first on a sac fly from Fransisco Lindor in the first, but the Nationals rallied with two in the second (two run single from CJ Abrams) and two more in the third (two run home run from Mitch Haniger). The Mets would score twice in the fourth on a two run home run from Dominic Smith, tie the game in the sixth with a sac fly from Smith, and then take the lead off of Zach Davies via a double from Harrison Bader and an RBI groundout from Jeff McNeil. The Nationals got one run back in the eighth when Luis Garcia singled, but could not find enough offense to get the lead back. Josh Hader would enter in the ninth and set down Rizzo, Haniger, and Drury 1-2-3.

Game Three: Cade Cavalli vs Jacob deGrom
The Nationals had an early 2-0 lead after three innings, with both runs coming on solo home runs to the second deck in left (the first from Mitch Haniger and the second by Gleyber Torres. Both homers were hit on hanging sliders from deGrom, who pitched well but would leave after just five innings. Cade Cavalli would also leave after five, giving up a run on four hits, a walk, a hit batter, and three strikeouts. New York’s first run came on a double from Pete Alonso, who would also tie the game in the sixth on a sac fly off of reliever Zach Warren. Neither team would score another run until the tenth; Andrew Vaughn would hit a pinch hit base hit to put Washington on top, but Brett Baty would tie the game with a sac fly in the bottom half. The game would go three more scoreless innings, but Washington would score twice in the fourteenth (CJ Abrams hit an RBI single and Brandon Drury an RBI double). The Mets would get a run in to lead off the bottom half but Zach Davies would prevent the tying run from scoring to give the Nationals a hard fought victory.

The Nationals (13-12) will head home to face the AL West leading Angels (15-10)

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

I think I finally found my mojo with 23!

I was hitting too well on default HOF, so I was contemplating going back to my 21 franchise. Instead, I decided to go back to my 21 settings on 23, dropping down from HOF to All-Star (on Competitive) but reducing the timing slider to 0 for me (and putting at 10 for the cpu). I've had four really fun games since doing that. I don't square the ball up as much, even on AS, with the timing slider at 0. And AS just feels "right" to me.

I've got my franchise saved at Opening Day in the cloud, so I downloaded that one to start over. My Braves are off to a 3-1 start. Looking forward to sticking with this one and making up for lost time.

                            2024 Washington Nationals

Los Angeles Angels (15-10) vs Washington Nationals (13-12)

Game One: Patrick Sandoval vs Stephen Strasburg

The Angels scored a run in the second on a fielder’s choice by Mitch Garver (the surprising RBI leader for them), and it would not be until the fifth that Washington would counter on a fielder’s choice of their own from Andrew Vaughn. Stephen Strasburg only went five innings, giving up the solo run on seven hits, a walk, and four strikeouts. The problem was the pitch count, as he would end the fifth inning on his 95th pitch, and Washington wants to be careful with him. The Nationals took the lead on an RBI base hit from Andrew Vaughn in the seventh, and never looked back. Zach Davies would go 1.2 scoreless innings, Zach Warren would go .1 innings (and ironically get the win), and Hunter Harvey would grind out the final two innings to get his first career save.

Game Two: Reid Detmers vs MacKenzie Gore

Garrett Hampson led the game off with a home run, and Mike Trout would obliterate a hanging curveball for a three run shot in the third. Taylor Ward would make it 5-0 with a fielder's choice in the fifth, but Washington would start to rally in the sixth when Kike Hernandez scored the first run with a sac fly. The Nats scored two in the seventh, one on a Keibert Ruiz double and another on a groundout by CJ Abrams. Victor Robles would hit an RBI base hit in the eighth to make it 5-4, and Andrew Vaughn nearly tied the game with a double down the line in the ninth, but it was just foul. He would fly out and the Nationals fall short in game two.

After the game, Sean Doolittle was optioned to AAA and SP Joan Adon was called up. The Nationals have used their bullpen a lot recently and they want to get a new arm up. Also, Adon only has 5 innings of MLB experience and that was in 2021, so the club wants to see what he has to offer.

Game Three: Michael Lorenzen vs Lucas Giolito
Mitch Haniger got the Nationals off to an early lead with a solo home run in the second, but the Angels tied the game in the third. Washington would retake the lead in the third on a fielder's choice from Luis Garcia. Los Angeles would then score three times in the fourth to pull ahead, but Mitch Haniger would get a run back with his second home run of the game. Joan Adon would get three innings of work in, giving up a run on three hits with two strikeouts. Zach Warren would give up another run in the eighth allowing the Angels to pull away and take the series 2 games to one.

The Nationals (14-14) spent their offseason looking for power bats, which they found. They hit the fewest number of home runs in 2023, and as we near the end of April they now lead the majors. However, the pitching has been inconsistent and the bullpen has been taxed for the past four games. The club is in the middle of a long stretch of games without any off days: they will play San Diego for three games at home before flying to Denver for four against the Rockies immediately followed by three more with the Padres in San Diego before finally getting a day off. It remains seen as to whether there will be more pitchers traveling back and forth between AAA, but the fans are really starting to call for Felipe Escalona to make his major league debut.

The beauty of baseball! Speaking of unpredictable...I'm nearly at the end of April and the AL leaders are as follows: Toronto and Baltimore are tied at 19-10, the Yankees are 11-18...the ROYALS are 18-10 and the Angels are 17-11. The National League is much more predictable (Phillies, Cardinals Dodgers), and my Nationals are in last place at 14-14. Gotta love it.

Another note while I'm on the topic of records...the Cincinnati Reds, who were the biggest disappointment last year after signing Aaron Judge and acquiring some big names (Luis Severino, Starling Marte [who is gone]) are 16-13, only a half game behind St. Louis. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up as the season progresses.
