Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

    September 22-24: ALBUQUERQUE (54-103) @ FLAGSTAFF (86-70)
    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

    September 22: Hops 1, Mariachis 0
    September 23: Hops 3, Mariachis 0
    September 24: Mariachis 4, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff took two of three from the lowly Albuquerque Mariachis, only losing the finale with ace Shoe-Lace O’Tying on the mound. The Hops did extend their lead in the West over the weekend though as they look to lock up their first division crown.

In the opener, Alex Farmer carried a no-hitter into the eighth as the Hops defeated the Mariachis 1-0. A solo home run from Donnie Roland was the only run of the ballgame in a game that only featured four base hits.

Farmer (11-11) ended up leaving the game after giving up a base hit to James Jung with one out in the eighth inning. He struck out five and issued only one walk. Pedro Macias came in to get the final two outs of the eighth with Vic Miller working a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 44th save.

John Stirewalt (8-13) was no slouch for Albuquerque. He tossed seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

The win kept the Hops 3 1/2 games ahead of Salt Lake and reduced their magic number down to five with eight games remaining.

On Saturday night, the Hops got another pitching gem as Ramon Garcia tossed six shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the Mariachis. Garcia struck out five and walked three as the Hops cruised to the victory.

Phillip Choi got things going with an RBI single in the second that scored Donnie Roland. Skyler Lyons was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end the inning.

In the fourth, Josh Ortega (39) and Donnie Roland (15) each hit solo home runs to make it 3-0. That would be all that the Flagstaff pitchers would need. Ramon Garcia improved to (12-7) with his second straight shutout. He allowed just two hits in six innings of work. Russell Fluty pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Fernando Benitez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his second save on the season.

In the finale, the Mariachis did just enough to defeat Shoe-Lace O’Tying and earn a hard fought 4-2 victory to avoid the sweep. Thomas Estrada hit his league leading 43rd home run to help lead the offense.

The Mariachis would grab a 1-0 lead in the third on a Rocco Reyes RBI single. Flagstaff would tie it up in the sixth on a Robbie Westbrook RBI single.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying was cruising along in this one, but hit a hiccup in the seventh as Reyes lead off with a double. After getting the next two outs, O’Tying surrendered a two-out RBI single to Rocco Reyes to give Albuquerque the lead. In the eighth, he would give up a solo home run to Thomas Estrada that ended his afternoon. O’Tying (13-9) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out a season high 14 and walked one.

The Hops would get one back in the bottom of the eighth on Robbie Westbrook’s second RBI single of the game. But the Mariachis would add a big insurance run in the top of the ninth and closer Andy Carley would finish off the Hops to pick up his 30th save.

The loss leaves Flagstaff 3 1/2 games ahead of Salt Lake with six games left in the season. The Hops will travel to Colorado Springs (77-79) for a three game series beginning on Tuesday before returning home to close out the season against last place Prescott (73-83). Salt Lake (83-74) travels to Long Beach (67-90) for a two game series and closes at St George (78-78).

Around the League: Chandler pulled out a 5-4 victory over Gilbert in 17 innings on Friday night to extend their lead in the DL East. Steve Heupel did homer for Gilbert in the loss, his league leading 48th on the season. Stanton Brickman walked it off with a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the 17th inning. Brickman has 35 home runs and 114 RBIs on the year.

Henderson rallied from a 9-1 deficit to stun Phoenix 10-9 in 13 innings on Friday night. The Silver Knights scored five in the bottom of the eighth and then two in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings where Sean Pressley blasted a solo walk-off home run in the 13th to send the Silver Knights onto the victory. Henderson remains four games up on Vegas in the race for the DL West.

A Johnny Lorenz two-run single keyed a three-run third as Gilbert slipped past Chandler 3-2 to move back to within three of first-place Chandler.

Henderson again went extra innings, this time an 18-inning marathon, as they defeated Phoenix again by a score of 10-9. This time it was a Jacob Martin solo home run, his second of the game and 13th on the season, that helped the Silver Knights walk it off. Will Hernandez (19-6) pitched the final three innings in relief to earn his league best 19th win. Hernandez is making a case for MVP and/or Cy Young of the Desert League as he has 78 appearance with 175 innings pitched. He has the most wins, has four holds and two saves to go along with 115 strikeouts.

El Paso hit five home runs and pounded out 15 hits in a 15-8 victory over Santa Fe to move into sole possession of first place in the ML Central. Tommie Bennett went 4 for 5 with a home run and seven RBIs in the win for the Blue Rocks. The win clinched a playoff birth for the Blue Rocks.

St George did the Hops a big favor as they pounded Salt Lake 12-3. The Chukars made three errors in the loss that dropped them four games back of the Hops and 1 1/2 games back of the Owlz in the Wild Card chase with just seven games left.

Gilbert defeated Chandler 6-5 in Sunday’s finale to move to within two games of the Chiefs in the DL East. Josh Heupel went 3 for 4 with an RBI and the Barnstormers hit three home runs in the victory.

Hulk Hoagie went 4 for 6 with two home runs and six RBIs in Austin’s 17-0 victory over West Texas. Hoagie now has 32 home runs and 99 RBIs on the season, brother.

Alex Farmer carried a no-hitter into the eighth on Friday night.

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 World Series Preview vs The New York Mets

The Chicago White Sox are meeting up with the New York Mets in the 2023 World Series. While many people would have expected the Mets to potentially make it, Chicago came as a bit of a surprise, though impressed down the stretch of the regular season and then came out hot in the postseason.

The Mets have been the best team in baseball all season, posting a 106-56 record while scoring the most runs in baseball and posting the seventh best ERA in the entire sport. They feature the National League MVP in Pete Alonso, the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year in Kodai Senga, the runner up to Rookie of the Year in Francisco Alvarez, the NL leader in WAR in Brandon Nimmo, one of the best shortstops in baseball in Francisco Lindor, and one of the best all around rotations in the league despite losing ace Max Scherzer to injury.

Let’s start with the offense, and most importantly Alonso. Alonso led all of baseball with 51 homers and an unimaginable 158 RBI while posting an OPS of .947. This was easily the best season of his career and he is the most feared hitter in baseball right now.

Brandon Nimmo isn’t too far behind, posting a 7.7 WAR due to his usual solid defense, a .406 OPS, and a breakthrough power year with 27 homers and 103 RBI, ending up good for a .971 OPS. He just barely got beat out by Ronald Acuna of the Braves for the batting title. He was sensational this year.

Jeff McNeil continued to be pesky, with a .301/.352/.445 slash with good defense and a nice power year with 34 doubles and 13 homers. His teammate up the middle, Lindor, posted a .805 OPS with 20 homers and 11 steals in only 106 games. The defense continued to be elite as well.

Starling Marte continues to not show his age, posting a .289/.351/.406 slash with 42 steals… in only 97 games. He is healthy and a force at the top of the lineup.

The last offensive star is rookie Alvarez, who while playing catcher at 21 years old, posted a .252/.320/.426 slash with 13 homers and 50 knocked in in only 93 games. He is heading towards a great career.

The staff is currently headlined by Senga, who posted a 16-6 season with a 3.03 ERa in 199 innings pitched in his first season coming over from Japan. He has been lights out in the postseason. Justin Verlander wasn’t as breathtaking as he was in 2022 for the Astros, but a 13-8 record with a 3.24 ERA while still pitching up to an astounding 222 innings is outstanding at 40 years old. David Peterson is expecting to take the mound in the third slot with Scherzer (15-8, 3.29 ERA) likely out for the playoffs and Peterson was only solid, posting a 2023 season with a 14-12 record and a 4.11 ERA. He has been really good in the playoffs though, showing that he is ready for the big moments.

Edwin Diaz headlines a great bullpen that’s got three guys with an ERA of 2.52 or better, and three others sub 4.00.

These are both top five offenses in baseball, the Mets have been better on the mound with the White Sox ending the regular season 12th in ERA,while the Mets have been much better at not beating themselves defensively and truly are just better in that aspect, particularly up the middle of the infield.

So how do the White Sox win? They need a lot more production than they got late in the series with the Angels from Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert. Tim Anderson and Andrew Benintendi were spectacular this year and had times of hitting really well in the postseason, but Jimenez and Robert have gone through a few stretches of games with no production. With runs possibly coming at a premium, a homer or two from these guys could be huge.

The pitching needs more consistency, particularly needing an all time performance from Dylan Cease, who was excellent in his last start. Mike Clevinger is getting the start in Game One, having allowed only one run across 15 innings in two starts this postseason, with Cease, Giolito, and Kopech following.

The experts are heavily favoring the 106-win Mets team that has gone 7-1 in the postseason to this point. The White Sox will need to come out hot if they want a good shot at pulling the upset.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Cardinals just wrapped up our Chicago/Boston road trip and it was a difficult stretch for us, going 2-4 on the trip which included two walk off losses and nearly getting no-hit by Chris Sale on the final getaway day in Boston.

St Louis (22-19) will be happy to return home to Busch Stadium for a crucial homestand that opens up with three games against the 1st place Milwaukee Brewers, who lead St Louis by 2.5 games in the NL Central.

        Game 1 features Jack Flaherty (3-1, 5.27) vs Corbin Burnes (5-2, 2.83)

        Who’s Hot
        Alec Burleson
Burly went 7-for-15 on the roadtrip including 3 doubles and a HR and could see more ABs against with Tyler O’Neill and Jordan Walker both struggling against right handed pitching

        Who’s Not
        Paul DeJong
In six games since returning from IL, DeJong has gone just 2-for-22 with a 40 percent K/rate

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 World Series Game One @ New York Mets

The Fall Classic is finally here, with the surprise Chicago White Sox taking on the favorite in the New York Mets. Mike Clevinger takes the mound for the White Sox, while Cy Young award winner Kodai Senga toes the rubber for the Mets.

The White Sox carried over their Game Seven strategy against the Angels here in this one at the plate, really working Senga to grind through every at bat. While not scoring a run in the first, two men reached on base and the ace was forced to throw 33 total pitches.

Clevinger entered the game riding a 0.60 ERA in 15 innings over two starts, but didn’t find easy footing early in this outing. Starling Marte smacked a single up the middle to start the game. After getting Luis Giullorme to strike out, the NL MVP Pete Alonso stepped to the plate and made his impact felt immediately by turning on an inner third fastball and taking it out to left field, his fourth homer of the postseason. Clevinger would rebound and get Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil to ground out. Mets up 2-0.

The White Sox continued their approach, as Grandal got a double with one out in the top of the second, which was followed by a Yoan Moncada single to right. Grandal was unable to score on this with his slow speed, so that left a runner on first and third for Jake Burger, who would strike out. Now with two outs, Tim Anderson stepped to the plate, and struck out looking on a tough call, allowing Senga to work through the trouble yet again with 22 pitches.

Clevinger would throw a smooth bottom of the second, and Senga a quick top of the third with the score still stuck at 2-0 in the Mets favor. Francisco Alvarez would step to the plate, and with two strikes would get a hanging slider from Clevinger that he would promptly hit for a nuke to make it 3-0 through three innings.

Now with some clawing back to do, the White Sox would finally strike in the fourth. An Oscar Colas double would crank the inning up. He was moved over to third with a Gavin Sheets fly out, and then knocked in with Yasmani Grandal ground out, making the score 3-1. With two outs, Moncada would pick up his second hit of the day with a single, placing Burger at the plate. Largely a lefty only starter, Burger got a “gut feeling” start against the righty Senga, and would prove the coaches right, launching a fastball to left and clearing the fence to tie the game at 3-3 through the top of the fourth.

The Mets would not allow this to stand, as Lindor immediately got the party started in the bottom of the fourth with a single, followed by one from McNeil as well. Clevinger would get a ground ball from Nimmo, but it glanced off Anderson’s glove deep in the hole at short, allowing the bases to get loaded with no outs. Bret Baty would get a SAC fly to left to score Lindor. Mark Canha would then hit a hard liner to left as well, glancing off of a Andrew Benintendi dive attempt to score McNeil and make it 5-3 for the Mets. This would chase Clevinger out after only 3.1 innings pitched, putting Aaron Bummer on the bump. Bummer would force a double play at the hands of Alvarez to get out of the mess.

The score held the same through the fifth, when Chicago would again get a rally together. Having chased Senga after five with over 100 pitches thrown, Carlos Carrasco was rudely greeted by Sheets with a hard single to right. Grandal would follow this up with a blast into right center, just barely clearing the fences to tie the game at 5-5. After Moncada’s third hit of the game, Burger would hit a grounder into a double play. Anderson would follow with a ground out as well, keeping the score at 5-5.

The Mets would again follow this up with a score though, this time off of Joe Kelly. Kelly would get an easy out of Lindor before walking McNeil and then leaving a hanging curveball for Nimmo to hit to the wall in centerfield, scoring McNeil from first and retaking the lead at 6-5.

The offenses would lull for a bit, as we now entered the top of the sixth with the White Sox still down 6-5. Brooks Raley would be called in out of the bullpen for the Mets, and immediately get a strike out of Colas. Sheets would work a walk behind this though and would be taken out for Jake Marisnick to take over as a pinch runner. After a Grandal strikeout, Marisnick would steal second with Moncada at the plate. Moncada would pick up his fourth hit of the game was an easy single to left, driving Marisnick in and tying the game yet again,

Kendall Graveman worked through the eighth quickly, giving the White Sox a chance at their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth. Anderson would start the inning off with a smoked double in the gap, but a wayward throw to the infield from Canha presented an opportunity for Anderson to take third. Baty would make a fantastic play and get Anderson out barely at third, making a golden opportunity instead a grave mistake as now a leadoff double was turned into an out, the inning would quickly end, giving the Mets a chance at a walk off.

Yency Almonte was brought in, quickly getting a strikeout and two ground outs from Canha, Alvarez, and Marte. Game One of the World Series was heading to extra innings.

Colas would start the 10th with a single. Seby Zavala, who replaced Marisnick earlier to play first, would strike out, and Grandal would hit an easy grounder for a double play.

Almonte was still on the mound in the bottom of the 10th, giving up a quick single to Guillorme before striking out Alonso on a nasty slider low and away. Lindor would then smoke a ground rule double. With runners now on second and third and only one out, the infield was brought in for a mound visit. With the infield at the grass, Almonte would get a ground ball to Anderson to hold the runner and get to two outs. He would then get Nimmo to roll over and get out of the inning in dramatic fashion. The game went to the 11th, still tied at 6-6.

John Curtiss would take the mound for the Mets, and other than hitting Burger with a pitch, quickly worked through the inning. With the bullpen getting thin quick, Chicago decided to go with Lance Lynn in the bottom of the 11th. The White Sox were awarded with an eight pitch inning to send it to the 12th.

Unfortunately for the White Sox, they were unable to get a base runner on against Curtiss. With the pressure back on Lynn against the New York offense, he would quickly give up a single to Marte. Guillorme would get one as well to drive Marte to third. Runners on first and third, Alonso came to the plate. Chicago would have a mound visit, but would leave Lynn in. He would be able to get Alonso to chase on a slider out of the zone in a 2-2 count. One out. Lindor would step to the plate simply trying to do anything other than ground into a double play or hitting a pop up.

Lindor would hit a ground ball, but it was perfectly placed and just slow enough that Moncada, playing double play depth, couldn’t get to and get a throw off to home, walking it off for the Mets in a 12 inning instant classic in Game One!

Despite our hitting the Mets, the White Sox would leave 10 runners on. This doesn’t include the base running mistake of over aggressiveness of Anderson in the top of the ninth by getting thrown out at third with no outs. There’s reason for optimism, but now Game Two becomes crucial if Chicago has a chance to take the series.

Next up, we will have Game Two in New York, as the Mets lead the series 1-0.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

I’m pretty happy with how my off season went. I was able to dump Starling Marte and Omar Narvaez to get some extra spending money and Luis Severino was my big signing at 3/$37 million. I also signed Tyler Mahle, Jordan Hicks, Dylan Floro, Ian Happ, Joc Pederson, and Brandon Belt to one year deals. Nothing flashy, I just wanted to avoid any long term commitments so when Scherzer and Verlander come off the books next year I can make a big splash. Only problem is I’m $33 million over budget and only have 86 players so I can’t fill out my roster. My opening day roster is pretty much decided at this point so I probably won’t play much spring training before I sim to the regular season.

I started out as one of the best teams in the league ratings wise last season and ratings plummeted throughout the season since my team was so old. I feel like this year things will be a lot steadier.

              Other big off season moves
              Ohtani to the Mariners
              Urias to the Nationals (WTF)
              Nola to the Astros
Dodgers signed Rhys Hoskins. I guess he’ll DH

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 World Series Game Two: @ New York Mets

                Series: Mets 1-0

With Dylan Cease going up against Justin Verlander, both teams have guys that they consider aces. Cease has had his troubles but is coming off of a great start in his last outing, while Verlander is a bonafide Hall of Famer that has put together yet another great campaign.

The White Sox appeared as if they were going to come out with a hot start, as Andrew Benintendi came up after a Tim Anderson groundout to hit a triple, setting the stage for a run if Eloy Jimenez or Luis Robert could come through. Unfortunately, neither did as Jimenez struck out and Robert weakly flied out to center.

Cease made short order in the bottom of the first, putting the White Sox up again. After getting two outs quickly, Verlander hit Yasmani Grandal and walked Gavin Sheets on five pitches, seeming to lose his command. He would get Elvis Andrus to strikeout though, getting out of trouble again.

Cease would give up a first pitch double to Francisco Lindor to start the second, which was quickly followed by a Jeff McNeil single to knock him in. After striking out Brandon Nimmo, Bret Baty would strike a double down the line to move McNeil to third. Mark Canha would ground out, but knocked in McNeil to make it 2-0 in the Mets favor.

Eloy Jimenez would make his World Series presence felt with one run dinger in the third with two outs, closing the gap to 2-1. Both sides would make it through the rest of the third and fourth without another score, but there was a crucial play that helped the scoreless stretch. That of an outstanding relay from Benintendi, Anderson, and Grandal to nab McNeil at home after a Baty double down the left field line.

After an Andrus strikeout to start the fifth, Anderson would get a single. While Benintendi was up to bay, Anderson would steal second to get into scoring position. Benintendi would strike out, but Anderson would steal third with Jimenez at the plate. Jimenez would fall to the strikeout pitch of Verlander thought, stranding the shortstop.

Verlander would finally get chased out of the game with two outs in the sixth, as Andrus took a 3-2 slider all the way to the wall for a double. Verlander would finish his day with 6.2 IP, one run allowed with four hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Sam Coonrod would get brought in to face Anderson, and would promptly walk him on a payoff pitch. With two on and two out, he would manage to get Benintendi to roll over and get through the top of the 7th, Mets still leading 2-1.

After walking Baty to start the bottom of the seventh, Cease would collect his 10th and 11th strikeouts of Mark Canha and Francisco Alvarez before being pulled. His line consisted of 6.2 IP, two runs allowed on seven hits and two walks, with those 11 strikeouts. Garrett Crochet would get brought in and would quickly dispose of Marte with a strikeout.

Adam Ottavino would get brought in by New York in the top of the eighth. Jimenez would hit him for a single quickly. He managed a pop up from Robert before Oscar Colas found green grass for a single. With two runners on, Moncada with get his first of the day with a blistered shot to right, but the arm of Marte cautioned Jimenez to stay at third. With the bases loaded and one out, Grandal stepped to the plate in the biggest moment of the game, and rolled over for an easy double play and a rally killer.

Crochet would start off the bottom of the ninth with a single from Guillermo, and would be replaced by Kendall Graveman. He would get Alonso to chase for a third strike before allowing a single to Lindor. This would be followed by a soft hit ground ball way in the hole at short that Anderson stopped but couldn’t get a throw off. With the bases loaded and one out, Graveman found his pitch and got Nimmo to shoot a ball hard at Moncada to turn two.

Edwin Diaz came in for the Mets in the top of the ninth for a chance at a save and a 2-0 series lead. Sheets would get a good at bat, but would fall victim to a strikeout. Jake Burger would come in as a pinch hitter for Andrus, but was overwhelmed for another K. Anderson would then rip a ball the other way, but Alonso would make a nice backhand play in the dirt, give Diaz a clean toss, and the Mets win Game Two 2-1.

The pitching was fantastic, only running into trouble a couple of times but both teams largely got out of those unscathed. The White Sox left 10 men on base, perhaps none worse than Benintendi after the triple in the first. This team has now played 18 innings in this series and have failed to lead at any point. Chicago has to find a way to get big hits, like they did so much of the majority of the postseason.

Next up, the series will head to Chicago with the White Sox desperately needing a win. The Mets lead the series 2-0 and are two wins away from a World Title.

Well it's definitely not going to be easy, SD has Ohtani and Beiber along with their usual group of stars.

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 World Series Game 3 - vs New York Mets

                          Series: Mets 2-0

Lucas Giolito took the mound for the White Sox and got off to a hot start, striking out the side in the top of the first. And an offense that is coming off a bad game rewarded him with the lead in the bottom of the first with a Tim Anderson homer off of David Peterson, the first lead for the White Sox in the series. Peterson would settle quickly however.

Giolito wouldn’t allow a base runner through the first 10 batters he faced until Luis Guillermo placed a single up the middle. This would be followed by a Pete Alonso double to tie the game. Giolito would get through the rest of the top of the fourth unscathed.

Peterson would get two batters down quickly, before Oscar Colas laced a double to left center. Up would step Jake Burger, whose flair for the dramatic continued with a homer to left center to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead.

Giolito would seem to find his groove in the fifth, getting a quick strike out Nimmo followed by a weak grounder by Brett Baty, but Mark Canha sat dead red and got something to drive into the left field seats to make it a 3-2 game. This would immediately get followed by a 422 foot mammoth shot by Francisco Alvarez, and Giolito’s amazing start seemed gone just like that.

After a quick bottom of the fifth, Guillermo and Alonso would quickly smack singles off Giolito to start the inning with two on and no outs. Lindor would find a hole to load the bases and Jeff McNeil would crank a fourth straight single to score two, putting the Mets up 5-3 and ending Giolito’s day. This was a weird outing, as Giolito was untouchable through three innings and then things just fell apart. He left with five innings, eight hits, five runs, and seven strikeouts; with two more runners still on base. Aaron Bummer took over, giving an extremely unlucky single right by the third base bag for Brandon Nimmo, scoring another to make it 6-3. Bummer would get the next two batters out, before Alvarez struck again with a double to make the score now 8-3.

Eloy Jimenez would get a triple in the bottom of the sixth, and after a Luis Robert pop up, Oscar Colas would find a pitch he liked and drove it over the right field wall with two outs to make it 8-5.

The positive momentum would not stick for the White Sox, as an Alonso single would lead to Bummer being replaced by David Martin, who promptly give Lindor a cookie to place in the seats to put the Mets up 10-5. Nimmo would join Lindor in the bleachers two batters later to make it 11-5.

A Pete Alonso RBI single in the top of the eighth would create our final score 12-5. The White Sox had momentum had various times this game, particularly early, but the Mets just kept pounding this staff. Chicago is having a very tough time against a team that just seems to be massively surperior to them at the moment, and they are now a game away from being swept. The offense needs better at bats and the pitching is going to have to be exceptional if they are to pull off a miracle comeback.

Up next, Game Four will also be in Chicago as the White Sox hope to avoid the sweep and hopefully begin a comeback.

I’m living vicariously through your franchise due to how bad the Mets suck in real life

                              2024 Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals (9-7) vs Milwaukee Brewers (8-7)

Game One: Corbin Burnesvs MacKenzie Gore
Willy Adames and Mitch Haniger both hit three run home runs in the first, but both starters would settle in before the game became a slug fest. MacKenzie Gore would strike out eight in his first four innings of work and only give up one more run on Keston Hiura’s solo homer in the fifth. Washington had already taken the lead on a two run home run from Gleyber Torres in the fourth, allowing Gore to leave after five innings as the potential winning pitcher. He would finish with nine strikeouts and just one walk, despite giving up four runs. Corbin Burnes would also exit after the fifth: he gave up five runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two. Washington added an insurance run in the sixth when Keibert Ruiz grounded out to score Mitch Haniger from third. The Nationals would send out Hunter Harvey, Victor Arano, Aaron Bummer and Trevor Rosenthal for an inning each; and they would prevent the Brewers from crossing home en route to a series opening win for Washington. The Brewers struck out 14 times in the game, ruining any chances of making a rally late in the game.

Felipe Escalona watch: Escalona, the prized left handed starter, made his third start in AAA. In three games, he is 1-0 with an era of 2.84. He has thrown 19 innings, giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 15 hits, walking eight and striking out 27.

Game Two: Brandon Woodruff vs Lucas Giolito
The Nationals scored in the first when Andrew Vaughn singled to drive in Brandon Nimmo, but from that point on it was all Milwaukee; they tied the game on a single from Christian Yelich in the third and took the lead on a two run home run from Willy Adames in the fourth. Lucas Giolito would go five innings, giving up the three runs, walking two and striking out five. Zach Davies would enter and give up a two run home run to Kolten Wong, followed by a solo home run from Luis Urias. Davies would come back out in the seventh and give up a third home run, this time from Christian Yelich, putting the Brewers up 7-1. Brandon Woodruff finished the eighth inning and turned it over to Matt Bush for the ninth, and the Nationals went quietly in a blowout affair.

Game Three: Freddy Peralta vs Josiah Gray
Kike Hernandez hit a two run home run in the third, but that would account for all of Washington’s runs. Milwaukee started their rally in the fourth when Keston Hiura hit a solo home run. Josiah Gray pitched his best game of the year, going 5.2 innings and only giving up the one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three. The Nationals bullpen collapsed, however, giving up three runs that Washington could not get back, handing them the series loss.

The Nationals (10-9) will now travel to Philadelphia for a three game set against the Phillies (13-7).

Braves spoil 3 HR game for Bryan Reynolds

The Pirates and Braves split the first two games of their final regular season series versus one another. That left game three for the Pirates to try to win their third straight series and for the Braves to get above .500.

Bryan Reynolds got the scoring with his first homerun of the day in the second inning. Kevin Plawecki and Rodolfo Castro also added RBI's of their own in the inning that gave Pittsburgh the early 3-0 lead. That lead was boosted up to 4-0 in the very next inning when Reynolds hit his second of the game. The 4th inning saw Ronald Acuna JR belt his 29th on the year and later in the sixth, Matt Olson hit his 32nd which completed Atlanta's comeback and gave them the lead 5-4.

Reynolds once again came through with his third homerun on the day in the 8th inning to tie the game at 5-5. Atlanta ended up loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning but Chase De Jong forced an inning ending double play.

Neither team scored in the 9th or 10th inning but unfortunately , Atlanta was able to get that walk off win in the bottom of the 11th on a Matt Olson single that gave the Braves the game win (6-5) and series win (2-1). Atlanta also won the season series vs. the Pirates, 4-3.

Pittsburgh will now return home for a four game set Vs. the Nationals (49-94/5th NL East).
