      2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: MacKenzie Gore (7-6, 4.82) vs Nick Lodolo (5-6, 2.67)
MacKenzie Gore gave up four runs in five innings of work, leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone. Meanwhile Nick Lodolo dominated the Nationals for five innings before CJ Abrams got him for a two run home run in the sixth. The game flipped once the bullpens got involved, as Washington’s pen shut out the Reds over four innings while Cincinnati kept giving Washington great scoring opportunities. The Nationals finally rallied in the ninth; starting with a walk to Mitch Haniger and a base hit by Joey Meneses followed by a three run home run by Keibert Ruiz. Aaron Bummer would get the save opportunity over Carl Edwards due to matchup reasons, and Washington opens the second half of the season with an inspirational come from behind victory.

Game Two: Lucas Giolito (5-7, 4.89) vs Graham Ashcraft (7-8, 3.22)
Ashcraft no-hit the Nationals in his last start prior to the All-Star Break, but the Nationals got revenge in a big way. Brandon Nimmo led off the game with a double and would score on a sac fly from Andrew Vaughn. The Red would score two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead but Keibert Ruiz tied the game in the second with a solo home run. Washington put up a five spot in the third which included back to back home runs from Brandon Drury (two run home run) and Keibert Ruiz (making it three home runs in three consecutive at bats going back to last night’s game). That would end the day for Ashcraft, who was charged with seven runs on eight hits with just one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work. The Nationals offense continued to pour in the runs, eventually ending up with 16 runs on 22 hits and drawing six walks. Luis Garcia drove in one run, CJ Abrams, Brandon Nimmo, and Brandon Drury drove in 2, and Mitch Haniger, Andrew Vaughn, and Keibert Ruiz each drove in three. Washington was also able to spare their bullpen as Lucas Giolito went five innings and Zach Davies went the rest of the way, giving up a combined four runs on ten hits.

Game Three: Stephen Strasburg (8-7, 2.91) vs Luis Severino (9-5, 2.78)
Both pitchers used a lot of bullets to keep the opposing team off the scoreboard, and it would be Severino who ran out of gas first. He loaded the bases in the fifth before giving up a two run double to Luis Garcia and a three run homer to Mitch Haniger, ending his day. Stephen Strasburg would only go five innings, giving up a lone run on an infield single by Aaron Judge. Strasburg allowed five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The Nationals added two more runs late on base hits from Andrew Vaughn and CJ Abrams, who has really been coming into his own as of late.

The Nationals (47-54) have come out of the break firing on all cylinders, but will need to keep up this high quality play if they want to beat their next opponent, the St. Louis Cardinals (50-49)

Cardinals make first big trade of the season

The Cardinals have made their first big trade of the season. The Cardinals and Dodgers have made a significant trade involving 7 players total:

        Cardinals Get:

        C - J.T. Realmuto
        RHP - Brusdar Graterol

        Dodgers Get:

        OF Steven Kwan
        RHP Giovanny Gallegos
        C Pedro Pages
        2B/IF Irving Lopez
        1B - Luken Baker

The Cardinals have been decimated by injuries of late. Tommy Edman is gone for the year with a broken ankle. And just recently the Cardinals lost starting backstop Ivan Herrera to fractured hand. He could return in September.

With that injury, the Cardinals needed a veteran backstop and turned to the Dodgers who had just DFA'd Realmuto. But the Dodgers asking price wasn't cheap, but the Cardinals were able to up the ante and acquire Brusdar Graterol along in the process.

The Cardinals are struggling to stay above .500 but luckily the NL Central is poor this year and they only trail the Brewers by 3 games.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

What year are you in again? 27? I know you dont mention ratings much and what not but is Realmuto still rated pretty high?

            2024 Pittsburgh Pirates 06/28-06/30

Overall Record:58-25 (1st NL Central/11 over Milwaukee Brewers)

            Game Results

            Game 1
            Pirates-3
            Red Sox-2

            Game 2
            Red Sox-3
            Pirates-0

            Game 3
            Red Sox-7
            Pirates-6

            Pirates streak ends at 13

The Pirates were riding high heading into their last June series, They were set to face off with the Red Sox who's recent struggles have continued as they sit at the bottom of the AL East.

The Pirates were able to take game one thanks to yet another stellar performance by Julio Urias who nearly had the complete game shutout. His 10 strikeouts kept him in the lead for the MLB strikeout race and he allowed just six hits and two runs. The runs however didnt come until he had already pitched 8.2 innings and as he was completely gassed (nearly 120 pitches). Those runs came off of a two run rbi double by Alex Verdugo. The Pirates runs came off of two singles singles by Ke'Bryan Hayes and another rbi single by Endy Rodriguez.

Game two saw Chris Sale peform like it was 2017 as he returned the favor and also threw well over 100 pitches but he was able to finish the job with the complete game shutout with the Red Sox snapping the Pirates win streak by winning 3-0. Sale allowed just four hits and struck out nine.

The Red Sox took the lead early in game three and by the time the ninth inning came, They were ahead 7-2. The Pirates did try to fight back as they scored four in the inning. But unfortunately, CJ Cron struck out with runners at 1st and 3rd to end the game.

The Pirates now go back on the road with their first stop being in Atlanta as the two teams continue to battle for MLB and NL bragging rights. Atlanta sits behind Pittsburgh with their 57-28 record.

Pirates and Braves tie in four game series for NL and MLB bragging rights

The Pirates and Braves entered their first series of 2024 as the top two teams in all of baseball. The possible playoff preview did not disappoint as both teams walked away with two wins a piece. The season series between the two will be decided rather soon as they will face off again after the all star break.

Two of the three games were decided in extra innings as the Pirates took game one win the tenth inning off a Ji-Hwan Bae rbi single. The Braves took the second extra inning game (3) when Michael Harris JR hit a walk off single.

Game two nearly went into extra innings as well but the Pirates were able to score two in the 9th to grab the win.

Game three was mostly dominated by Atlanta who got off to a 1st inning 3-0 lead thanks to Austin Riley's second homerun of the series (16 on the year). The Braves added on with another three run inning in the 5th that gave them the 6-0 lead. The Pirates did finally get on the board in the 8th but failed to get a hit later in the innings when they had the bases loaded.

The Pirates suffered another injury in this series as Ji Hwan Bae went down with a broken forearm while diving back to first on a pickoff attempt. He joins Tucupita Marcano (1-2 months) and Bryan Reynolds (out for season) on the injured list. The Pirates are still unsure about who will take Bae's spot on the roster.

The Pirates will now head to Minnesota to take on Shohei Ohtani and the Twins (50-39/2nd AL Central).

                  Game 3
                  Pirates-8
                  Twins-2

                  Pirates triple-double helps avoid sweep

The Minnesota Twins made some big moves in 2023 that significantly improved their team. Now, they have a big four in Shohei Ohtani, Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton and Freddie Freeman. Those four highly contributed to their games 1 and 2 wins versus the Pirates.

Having lost four straight at that point, the Pirates did not want to go into the All Star break losing in a sweep and losing five in a row. Luckily, they were able to avoid that as three players hit two homeruns a piece in that game three.

Oneil Cruz got it started on the first pitch of the game as he took a slightly outside fastball from Pablo Lopez over the left centerfield wall. The ball was just barely out of the reach of Byron Buxton who had robbed Cruz's attempt at a first pitch HR in game two.

The Twins did take a brief lead in the bottom half of the first inning when Carlos Correa hit a two run double.

Anthony Santander got into the fun in the third inning when he hit his team leading 21st homerun of the season.

Both Santander and Cruz would add another on the day (#22 and #15).

Andrew Mccutchen was the third player two hit two HRs on the day (#11 and #12). His came in the fourth and 8th innings.

All that led to the Pirates 8-2 win.

The Pirates did suffer yet another injury. This one again came as a player dove back to second on a pickoff attempt. (it seems every injury is from a diving play).... The Pirates rookie of the year candiate, Matt Frazier suffered a torn calf and is expected to miss 1-2 months. He joins Tucupita Marcano, Ji-Hwan Bae and Bryan Reynolds on the injured list.

Jared Triolo and Drew Maggi were recalled from AAA Indianapolis to fill the vacant roster spots. Both are utility players who can fill in at various positions.

The Pirates are trying to avoid bringing up last years #1 overall pick, the LF Yoennis Sherry but he may get the call up sooner rather than later if the Pirates keep sending players to the IL.

Its now time for the All Star break. The Pirates Anthony Santander is partcipating in the homerun derby and several players (mainly pitchers) should be on the All Star Team.

Getting ready to start a new franchise that I plan on doing long term. Seriously torn on whether I want to use the extra inning runner. On the one hand I absolutely hate everything about that rule and wish it would go away. On the other hand, it’s part of the game now, and I like to be realistic. I really can’t decide what to do. What does everyone in their franchises doing regarding that rule?

I had it turned on last year and off this year.

I do like the added complexity of dealing with a worn-down pen after a long extra inning game; that was the main reason I disabled the new rule this year.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

I hate it in real life but like it for the Show. Don’t want to be playing 20 inning games.

I've tried to restart and get back into a new franchise, but my original one I've been playing since April keeps pulling me back. Does anyone else have this issue?

I've not updated as much or as often as I would like recently due to several factors, but I'm going to try to get back into the routine as it helps engage me in my virtual franchise.

Anyways, now is as good a time as any to start as I've just finished the 2028 season. I plan to be active in updating the offseason and then launching into Spring Training and Opening Day of the 2029 season.

Thank you to anyone that cares to follow along.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
