Graphics don’t necessarily need to be the same, but the gameplay/animations/physics do.

No reason to jump to conclusions on this anyway since we’ll see in the trailer. I’m sure people here will be calm and reasonable with their reactions in either direction.

If we don't get a current gen experience due to the f***ing Nintendo Switch, it's gonna be a real kick in the marbles.

When they say the current switch is in the cross play mix everyone should really temper their expectations…

That they are contractually obliged to still release it on the Switch is one thing but to keep the cross play intact when they ditch the old gen consoles doesn’t make any sense to me.

I’d imagine graphics matter as well. Say, for example, one of the updates is rebuilt stadiums or body types and jerseys on the new consoles, that’s not something that can be translated to a switch version that couldn’t handle those textures and polygons required to rebuild them, so their game wouldn’t look the same across the board.

That’s physics though. Textures can be scaled down to work on any console/PC. It’s more of a matter of processing the game and having to power to do so.

Every console generation all we hear about from developers is how they’re able to do so much more with the new consoles and rebuild new assets. If they’re trying to do this on current gen consoles, it’s impossible to make it compatible with a switch. They can’t simply “scale down” anything if it hasn’t been specifically built for it

I think everyone needs to watch and remember this video. These type of changes that we expect cannot happen if they need to be compatible with the switch.

My hopes aren't super high, but I believe they can still upgrade the graphics on the current gen releases while keeping it cross play compatible with the Switch. IMO, the gameplay is already pretty great and doesn't need any kind of overhaul. So as long as the overall physics and animation systems stay intact with some minor improvements, cross play should be fine, and they can still make strides to improve the visuals for the current gen.

One example I can think of is the added hair physics in 24. As far as I know that wasn't included in the Switch version, but it was on the current gen and yet cross play was still intact. I don't see why upgrading other things like the field and dirt, or adding cloth simulation to the player models, or lighting enhancements like raytracing or ambient occlusion in the current gen version would have any effect on the gameplay, needing a removal of cross play.

The thing is though, Xbox gamers are just used to it being on Game Pass so now asking them to pay $70 is very risky. I don't know what sales of the game were on Xbox and don't care enough to Google it, but I wonder if this is just a one-year thing or if it's gone from Game Pass permanently now.
This does suck, I've enjoyed the past few years having it on GP. I have no issues spending the money as I've really enjoyed it since coming to GP, but I'll wait a bit until I read reviews and check out impressions.

I agree that some of these might be possible, but I think the issue here is that bigger changes might require a new engine. Ray tracing is something that I’ve been wanting for a long time but there’s no way they could implement something as demanding as that into a game that’s been running the same engine since the ps3 era. I think that hair physics and tweaks to the lighting were minor changes they were able to squeeze out of the current engine. I really do hope that I’m wrong about all of this and we finally get the “next gen” experience we’ve been waiting for.

I think the Show is still a solid game but I've honestly been giving it a pass for a lot of its flaws because I've been able to play it on Gamepass for the past few years.

Definitely waiting to see if there's any actual significant improvements before decided to buy it, wait for a sale or skip this year.

Fully content to play with a 2024 A's franchise that remains in Oakland forever.
