Cardinals sweep the Pirates in Pittsburgh push win streak to 7 games

    RECORD: 44-38
    DIVISION: 1.5 GB
    WILDCARD: 3RD SEED

The Cardinals swept the Pirates in Pittsburgh to extend their winning streak to 7 games and actually hold a playoff position (3rd wildcard seed).

The Cardinals offense was phenomenal this series averaging 5 runs per game and a team batting average of .310 for the series. Pitching was just as good, even Jordan Montgomery, as all 4 starters earned wins in the series.

Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson were the standouts with Walker extending his hitting streak to 8 games and Burleson recording 11 hits in the series.

Next up is a 3 game series in Texas with the Rangers over the weekend to close out the month of June.

Here we go again with Cal!!!

      Cal Ripken Jr. – 6’4” - 205 – 3B – R/R
      18 years old - 63 overall (May 2025)
Drafted in Round 2 – Pick 24 – Washington Nationals
      Team: Harrisburg Senators (AA)
      Top 100 Prospects: 3rd / MLB ETA: 2025

      Last Series: 6G / 6 for 26 / .231 BA / 1 HR / 3 RBI

      Team Last Series: vs Altoona Curve / 3W – 3L / 34 Runs Scored / 29 Runs Allowed

      2025 AA Stats: 39G / .301 BA / .347 OBP / .491 SLG / .837 OPS / 13 2B / 32 RBI

      2025 Team Record: 19W – 20L – 3.0 GB – 4th in Eastern League Southwest

Individual Performance: It started well for Cal in that series. After 3 games he was 5 for 13 at the plate, a HR and 3 RBIs. In the fourth game, the wheels fell off and it was a 1 for 13 showing, with just a single. “It’s like the roller coaster ride if the only thing he has for him so far this season. He works hard, he’s full of talent, but consistency will need to upgrade.” said Senators manager. Ripken Jr. had that BA up to .326 before the series, but it all went back to .301. “I can do better; it’s the only thing I will say.” explained the 3B after the series.

Team Performance: This was an offensive showdown, no doubt about it. One of the two teams scored at least 5 runs in every game while there was 12, 14, 11 and 14 runs in 4 of the 6 games played. “It was not a pitching series, to say the least. I don’t think either pitching staff were sad to see the other team travel somewhere else for the next series!” said Harrisburg pitching coach.

Next up: vs Chesapeake Baysox (22W – 17L, 0.0 GB – 2nd in EL Southwest)

        2025 Houston Astros 08/08-08/10

Overall Record: 59-59 (3rd AL West/6.5 behind Texas Rangers/2.0 behind 3rd wildcard spot

        Game Results
        Game 1

        Yankees-5
        Astros-2

        Game 2
        Astros-7
        Yankees-5

        Game 3
        Astros-8
        Yankees-4

Astros offense comes alive for first series win of August.

Houston needed this. After starting the month of August, 1-6 (to include game one versus NYY). The Series win against those Yankees hopefully builds momentum as the Astros get ready to head home and face Boston for the second time this month.

This series, well Houston lost game one 5-2 in what could be attributed to a very rough 3rd inning for Framber Valdez. After two scoreless innings to start the day, Framber gave up all five runs in that third inning. The inning included four hits for New York and a walk. Two of those four hits were homeruns by DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton. At that time, it was 5-0 and the Astros could not come back from that. They did get two on Gerrit Cole but the bullpen was perfect as they pitched three innings will allowing a single hit to close out the game. Devin Williams got his 27th save of the season.

The second game saw the Astros have a big third inning of their own. Theirs came against Yankees starter, Max Fried as they turned around a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 lead. That lead would be lost in the bottom half of the inning when Giancarlo Stanton continued his strong series with an rbi single against Hunter Brown. Past that inning the Astros never trailed and eventually won, 7-5 with the last run coming from Jose Altuve's 18th homerun of the season in the 9th inning as the Astros tied up the series.

The rubber matchup saw the Astros best pitcher thus far in 2025, Ronel Blanco face off with Luis Gil. Ronel's good season continued although he did not factor into the decision. He pitched 5 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 runs and struck out 7 (to increase his AL lead to 151. 2nd is Tanner Bibee of the Guardians at 134). Upon Blanco's departure, the game was tied at 3-3 thanks to Jazz Chisholm JR's second homerun of the game (#16 and #17). Then, another homerun for New York in the seventh inning game them the 4-3 lead (Jasson Dominguez #9). At that time, Houston had to figure that they would lose another series as they were set to face the backend of the Yankees bullpen. But, that wouldnt be the case as in the 8th, Marucio Dubon and Isaac Paredes (single and HR #16) off of Fernado Cruz gave the Astros the lead 5-4. Then, Houston would add on in the 8th and 9th innings to eventually win the game 8-4.

The series win brings hope to a team that has been struggling. They will now return home to face the Red Sox who swept Houston in the first series of August. Boston currently has the second best record in the MLB (75-44/1st AL East/13.5 over Yankees).

Astros add a couple of Jacksons to their bullpen.

Tayler Scott and Shawn Dubin had been struggling in the middle of the Astros bullpen. Both have a 7+ ERA and have been sent down to triple A. In corresponding moves, the Astros have added Luke Jackson and Zach Jackson to take their spots in the pen. Luke was claimed off of waivers from the Texas Rangers. He had pitched in 29 games for Texas for 34.0 innings with an ERA around 4.50. He pitched in game two versus the Yankees and gave up one hit to his first batter faced. However, due to a double play and a groundout, he got out of the inning with just three pitches.

Zach Jackson last pitched in the Majors for the Oakland Athletics in 2023. During his time with the team, he had a 2.86 ERA before injuries derailed his career. Houston picked him up out of free agency and hope he can continue that pre-injury success in Houston. He pitched in the third game against New York and had a perfect inning allowing no hits and striking out one.

          May 1-4: PHOENIX (18-17) @ LAS VEGAS (12-21)
          Stadium: Bally's Ballpark (Capacity: 26,976)

          May 1: Silver Kings 5, Firebirds 3
          May 2: Firebirds 3, Silver Kings 0
          May 3: Silver Kings 7, Firebirds 2
          May 4: Silver Kings 5, Firebirds 2

Las Vegas, NV (AP) - Las Vegas bounced back from their series in Long Beach by taking three of four from Phoenix at Bally's Ballpark.

The Silver Kings returned home and started their ten game home stand with a 5-3 victory over the Firebirds. A two-run home run from David Tejeda in the bottom of the eighth was the difference as Vegas rallied from a 3-1 deficit to pull out the victory.

Las Vegas took an early 1-0 lead in the second on a Caden Juarez solo home run, his fourth on the season.

Phoenix would strike for all three of their runs in sixth inning, chasing starter Kevin Perez. Phil Chapman opened the inning with a single to right. He stole second and scored on a Richie Dale single to right. Dale then stole second and scored on a Jody Morton single to right to put Phoenix up 2-1. Morton stole second and scored on a John Harper single back up the middle to make it 3-1.

Las Vegas struck back immediately in the bottom half. Julio Chacon reached on a hit by pitch. David Tejeda then hit a sharp grounder to first that looked like a double play ball, but first baseman Rob Gray threw the ball into left field allowing the runners to move up to second and third. Mariano Hidalgo grounded out, allowing Chacon to score. Caden Juarez followed up with an RBI double to plate Tejeda to tie the game at 3-3.

In the eighth, Julio Chacon hit a bloop single to right to open the inning. David Tejeda then hit an 0-2 hanging curveball over the wall in right to put Vegas up 5-3.

Rob Porter came on in the ninth for Las Vegas and locked down his sixth save on the year, as Las Vegas became the last team in the IBL to finally reach ten wins.

On Friday night, Emery Hutchinson made one mistake, but it cost his team, as Phoenix beat Las Vehas 3-0. Rob Gray hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning off of Hutchinson and that was the difference in the game.

This one was a pitchers duel with Hutchinson (3-3) pitching six innings and allowing the three runs on six hits, striking out seven. He counterpart D.J. Saunders (2-4) pitched seven shutout innings, scattering three hits.

The Silver Kings would not do anything offensively and let a couple of good scoring chances waste away in the first and second innings as they left three runners in scoring position without scoring. A Danny Watt two-out single in the seventh was the Silver Kings only hit after the second inning.

Caden Juarez saw his ten game hitting streak snapped as he went 0 for 2 with a walk.

On Saturday evening, the Silver Kings put together a five-run fifth inning to come away with a 7-2 victory over the Firebirds. Eric Machado went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and a run scored to help pace the offense.

Phoenix grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to three straight two out hits. Phil Chapman tripled. Richie Dale and Rob Gray followed with RBI doubles to put Phoenix up by two.

Las Vegas responded with five in the bottom half as they batted around. Russell O'Reilly and Todd Matsumoto singled with one out. Eric Machado doubled home both runners to tie the game. Julio Chacon singled to right with Machado being held up at third. David Tejeda singled home Machado to put Las Vegas ahead 3-2. Mariano Hidalgo then lined a two-run double to center to make it 5-2.

Vegas would add two more in the eighth. Mariano Hidalgo was hit by a pitch and scored on a Danny Watt RBI triple. Watt then scored on an Alexander Busch sacrifice fly to put the Silver Kings up 7-2.

John Sato picked up the save, pitching the final three innings in relief of Antoine Swanger (4-2). Swanger went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking one.

In Sunday afternoon's finale, Jeremi Dillon (1-5) picked up his first win of the season, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out seven. Mariano Hidalgo went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the offense to the series win.

Las Vegas struck early as Hidalgo drove in both of his runs in the first inning with a two-run double, scoring Julio Chacon and David Tejeda.

Phoenix would get one back in the top of the second on a John Harper RBI single through the left side that plated Jody Morton.

In the third, Caden Juarez came through with a clutch two-out, two-run double that scored Chacon and Tejeda to put Las Vegas up 4-1. Juarez leads the team with 22 runs batted in.

A David Tejeda solo home run in the fifth put the Silver Kings up 5-1. It was his team leading sixth on the year.

Phoenix scored in the sixth on an Estevan Hernandez RBI double, scoring Phil Chapman.

The Las Vegas bullpen then came in and did its job. Kai Ransom, Russ Zickafoose and Rob Porter tossed scoreless innings with Porter picking up his seventh save.

The Silver Kings will have Monday off before hosting the Salt River Rafters (17-18) for a three game series beginning on Tuesday evening. The Silver Kings starting pitching has been excellent this year. They are 9th in ERA (3.54), 1st in WHIP (1.05), 7th in hits/9 innings (8.2), 7th in strikeouts (177), and 1st in walks allowed (26). It is impressive for a team that is nine games below .500 at (12-21).

Around the League: Amarillo got a two-out, two-run walk off double from Arlen Larson as the Honey Hunters rallied to defeat Tahoe 3-2 on Saturday night at Hodgetown in a battle of first place clubs. Amarillo's Marty Rosa struck out nine in six innings of work, allowing two runs as Amarillo improved to (22-10) and now has the best record in the IBL.

Boise's Steve Jefferson tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout, striking out 11 as the Hawks shutout Austin 5-0.

Long Beach traded 30-year-old starting pitcher Barry Edwards (74 OVR, C POT) to Peoria for 32-year-old starting pitcher Jack Sweat (75 OVR, C POT) and 21-year-old catcher prospect Pablo Veras (65 OVR, C POT). Edwards was (2-2, 5.13 ERA) in 33,1 innings for Long Beach and will likely fill the fifth starter role in Peoria. Sweat was (3-2, 3.43 ERA) in 39.1 innings for Peoria and he will likely be the fifth starter in Long Beach.

Tahoe's Alex Prado went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, home run and eight RBIs as the Lake Monsters salvaged the finale of a three game weekend series with Amarillo with a 14-8 victory.

Danny Watt has been one of the best players on the Silver Kings in 2025.

Cardinals drop series to Rangers to end win streak at 8

            RECORD: 45-40
            DIVISION: 2 GB
            WILDCARD: 1/2 GB

The Cardinals saw their winning streak end at 8 as they dropped the final two games of the series with Rangers over the weekend. The Cardinals slipped to 2 games behind the Cubs in the Central and a 1/2 game out of the wildcard.

The Cardinals played well Friday night as Griffin Canning got the win as the Cardinals beat the Rangers 7-3 behind Alec Burleson and Willson Contreras bats. But Saturday and Sunday weren't the best as Matthew Liberatore and Dustin May both got knocked around in their starts and the bats went absolutely silent, getting shutout on Sunday with only 2 hits.

Cardinals sweep the White Sox in St.Louis - grab division lead

              RECORD: 48-40
              DIVISION: +0.5 over Cubs
              WILDCARD: -

The Cardinals swept the White Sox in St.Louis to begin the week and now have taken sole possession of 1st place in the NL Central after the Cubs have lost 4 straight.

Sonny Gray got things started Tuesday night with a complete game shutout as the Cardinals used a 5 run 6th inning to win 5-0 over the ChiSox. Brendan Donovan's 3 run blast was the spark and Jordan Walker's 2 run double was the cap. Gray would allow just 3 hits and record 8 strikeouts in his complete game effort.

Wednesday it was Michael McGreevy making his 2026 debut as he took Jordan Montgomery's turn in the rotation. McGreevy got thru 5 innings allowing a single run on 6 scattered hits. Alec Burleson's grand slam in the 1st inning open the flood gates as the Cards would blow out the ChiSox 12-3. Burleson ended up with 6 RBIs on the night and Dylan Carlson added 2.

Thursday Griffin Canning provided 6 innings of work but got off to a rough start giving up 3 runs in the 1st, but settled in to get thru 6. Andre Pallante, Jordan Hicks and Ryan Helsley would close things out in a Cards 5-3 win. Brenton Doyle had a 3 run triple in the 6th that put the Cards ahead 4-3. An 8th inning solo blast from Nolan Arenado would add the insurance run as Ryan Helsley pitched a perfect 9th to save the game.

The Cardinals will now welcome the Pirates to town for a 3 game weekend series.

Cardinals acquire Edmundo Sosa from Phillies in exchange for Jordan Montgomery and Raynel Delgado
              ]

The Cardinals have acquired IF Edmundo Sosa from the Phillies in exchange for Jordan Montgomery and Raynel Delgado. The Phillies pitching staff has been decimated by injuries this year and reached out to St.Louis to make a deal. After a few days of discussions the trade was agreed upon. Montgomery has been a roller coaster this year having terrific games and then absolutely blowing up. Raynel Delgado has been a solid piece off the bench and will likely replace Sosa's role on the Phillies roster.

With Sosa, the Cards are getting another familiar face and a solid backup to fill in for days off, but also be inserted into the everyday lineup if need be.

With Montgomery moving to Philadelphia, the Cardinals have recalled RHP Michael McGreevy from Memphis to take Montgomery's rotation spot.

                The Amazins

Mets Score 8 In The 9th, Win Wild One
                September 7, 2029

New York is in the back end of a 16 game in 16 day stretch, and they just returned from a 7 game road trip spanned from West Coast to South Beach. It looked like this one was over before it started and could be chalked up to fatigue. RHP Travis West gave up 4 runs in the first inning and would be chased from the game before he could get to the 5th inning. In total, he surrendered 7 ER on 13 hits.

The Mets got on the board in the 2nd inning with a solo shot from LF Michael Conforto, his 12th of the year. They would tack on a few more by the sixth, but wouldn't really threaten. The Orioles added a run on a 1B Nick Wise HR in the top of the 9th, and would lead 9-4 when the Mets came up to bat in the bottom of the inning. That's where the fun began.

3B Rafael Devers would get the party started with a double down the right field line. C Luke Wray would lace one into the right-center for another double. 5-9. LF Albert Almora, who entered the game for Conforto in the 7th inning, would line a single into right field and push the runner to third. A couple batters later, IF Barney Nowak would drive in a run on a sac fly to center. 6-9. Down to their last out, RF Nick Karnitz would work a tough bases loaded walk to keep the Mets alive and chip away. 7-9. SS Corey Seager would then deliver his only hit of the day, and it was a big one. He lined a single into left field that would score 2 runs and tie the game. 9-9. Then Devers didn't waste any time in his second at bat of the inning, He crushed a changeup on the outer half of the plate that landed in the Coca Cola Corner. 12-9 Mets. Final.

All in all, the two teams combined for 21 runs on 36 hits, 11 of which were extra bases. What a game.

                  May 7: Rafters 7, Silver Kings 5
                  May 8: Rafters 5, Silver Kings 1

Las Vegas, NV (AP) - Patience is wearing thin in Las Vegas as they were swept by Salt River to fall 12 games below .500. The offense is just about non-existent and now the pitching is starting to fall about. Not a good combo.

In the Tuesday evening opener, the Rafters used a three-run third inning and some excellent pitching to beat the Silver Kings 4-0. Reuben Gonzalez (4-3) tossed eight shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out six to lead the Rafters to their eighth win in their last nine games.

The Rafters got to Steve Sechrist (1-2) in the third, all with two outs. Rickey Cornell singled to center and Abdul Ewing followed that up with a single to right. Tommie Turnwell then singled to left to score Cornell. Micah Lange tripled to center, scoring both runners but he was thrown out (8-6-2) trying to complete an inside-the-park home run.

Bo Mitchell would add a solo home run in the fourth, his eighth on the season, and Salt River went up 4-0 on a cold and rainy night in Las Vegas.

The Silver Kings could not get anything going offensively, managing only seven hits, with only one extra-base hit on the evening. The Silver Kings also hit into three crushing double-plays.

John Sato pitched 2.2 scoreless inning in relief of Steve Sechrist. He had allowed home runs in his previous two appearances.

On Wednesday evening, the Rafters scored seven times in the third inning, then held on for a 7-5 victory. Micah Lange went 2 for 5 with a double and he drove in a run to lead the Rafters to the win.

Archie Cutliff started the third with an infield single. Timo Hidalgo then grounded out (6-4-3) as Cutliff beat the play at second. Rickey Cornell singled home Cutliff to make it 1-0. Abdul Ewing singled to right. Tommie Turnwell hit a blooper to left that fell in, scoring Cornell. Micah Lange then singled to left to score Ewing to make it 3-0. Bo Mitchell walked to load the bases. Leon singled to right to score Turnwell. Cameron Napier then singled to left to score Lange and Mitchell to make it 6-0. Timo Hidalgo would hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Leon. The Rafters sent 11 men to the plate with seven scoring in the inning.

Starter Kevin Perez (1-4) was pulled in the third, going 2.1 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. Martin Villegas and Kai Ransom were excellent out of the bullpen. Villegas worked 3.2 innings without allowing a hit. Kai Ransom pitched 2.2 scoreless innings.

Las Vegas finally got the offense going in the fourth. Mariano Hidalgo lined a single to left that scored Eric Machado. Danny Watt then singled home Hidalgo to make it 7-2. Danny Watt would hit a solo home run in the seveth to cut it to 7-3, his third on the year.

In the eighth, Caden Juarez hit a two-out, two-run double to cut it to 7-5. The Rafters brought in their closer Carney and he got Danny Watt to fly out to center. He then sent the Silver Kings down in order in the ninth to pick up the four out save, his 11th on the season.

Richard Stanley (4-3) picked up the win for Salt River. He pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

In Thursday evening's finale, Micah Lange had himself a day, going 3 for 4 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs ad the Rafters completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory.

Salt River didn't use a big inning in this one, they just plugged away, scoring in five separate innings as they pounded out 15 hits.

In the top of the first against Silver King's ace Emery Hutchinson, Micah Lange hit a two-out, RBI triple that scored Rickey Cornell. In the third, Micah Lange hit a two-out RBI double, scoring Ernesto Mercado, to make it 2-0. Abdul Ewing was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning.

Las Vegas would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third on back-to-back doubles from Russell O'Reilly and Todd Matsumoto.

A Cameron Napier home run in the top of the fourth stretched the lead back out to 3-1. Micah Lange would hit a solo shot in the sixth to make it 4-1, his eighth on the year. Eloy Leon then hit a line drive home run to left in the top of the ninth to put a cap on this one, his ninth on the season.

Chris Alecio (2-3), the puss-throwing right hander stymied the Silver Kings all night. He went six innings, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. The bullpen was just as good, holding Vegas to two hits over the final three innings.

Emery Hutchinson (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits in six innings. He struck out seven, and the frustration is starting to show. After the game, he said, “I guess I am going to have to throw a shutout or we aren't going to have a chance to win.”

Henry Coronado threw two scoreless innings of relief, striking out five.

Micah Lange went 7 for 13 in the series with two doubles, two triples, a home run and six RBIs. The Silver Kings are thrilled that he is leaving town.

Adding insult to injury, second baseman Danny Watt injured his shoulder making a diving attempt and had to leave the game. He will likely miss two to three weeks and will be placed on the 10-day Injured List.

The Silver Kings (12-24) will close out this ten game homestand with a three game weekend series with Mesa (19-18).

Around the League: Amarillo has traded 28-year-old reliever Travis Ramirez (79 OVR, C POT) to Billings for 25-year-old starting pitcher Freddie Reyes (65 OVR, C POT). Ramirez had a 4.02 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 15.2 innings of work for Amarillo in 2025. The Honey Hunters have a stacked bullpen, which made Ramirez expendable.

Suddenly red-hot Long Beach completed a three-game sweep of first place Tahoe to move to within two games of the Lake Monsters in the DL West.

Peoria is (9-1) in their last ten, having just taken three of four from Scottsdale, to move atop the DL Central at (22-16).

Micah Lange wrecked the Silver Kings on Thursday evening.

                    2025 Houston Astros 08/11-08/13

Overall Record: 61-60 (3rd AL West/5.5 behind Texas Rangers/1.5 behind last WC spot)

                    Game Results:

                    Game 1

                    Red Sox-4
                    Astros-3

                    Game 2
                    Astros-4
                    Red Sox-3

                    Game 3
                    Astros-3
                    Red Sox-2

Astros avenge earlier sweep with 2-1 series victory over Bregman and Red Sox.

That's two series wins in a row as the Astros try to stay afloat in the AL West and AL Wildcard race. The Astros have now won two of three against the top two teams of the AL East, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The latter are record wise the 2nd best in the MLB.

Boston won the first game of the series despite two homeruns by the likely MVP of Houston and possible MVP of the AL, Yordan Alvarez hitting his 48th and 49th homeruns of the season. Alvarez's shots were outmatched by the Red Sox's four runs against Spencer Arrighetti in the first four innings.

The Astros flipped the script in game two with their own 4-3 victory. In that game, they took the lead in the 8th inning when Altuve bunted in Jeremy Pena who had walked earlier in the inning. Josh Hader collected his 30th save of the season with a perfect 9th inning.

Game three saw the bunt play a pivotal role again. That 7th inning started off positively as Christian Walker and Yainer Diaz singled to start it off against Liam Hendricks. At that time, the Red Sox led 2-1. The inning was nearly derailed as Isaac Paredes grounded into a double play. Then as they have in so many situations this year, the Astros went small ball when Jake Meyers bunted in Walker as he just beat Devers' throw to first to tie the game at 2-2.

And, finally, of course Yordan Alvarez came in clutch in 8th inning when he hit a two out single that brought the leading and eventual winning run across the plate.

Hader finished it off with another perfect 9th that included a leadoff strikeout of the defector, Alex Bregman who went just 2-11 in the series.

Houston will now have a day off before they finish off their homestand with three versus Baltimore (62-58/2nd AL East/13.0 behind Boston).

Cardinals drop series to Pirates, now tied with Cubs atop NL Central

                      RECORD: 49-42
                      DIVISION: TIED WITH CUBS
                      WILDCARD: -

The Cardinals dropped their 3 game series with the Pirates over the weekend and are now tied with the Cubs atop the NL Cental division. The Cardinals lost both Friday and Saturday night as the offense was missing in action as the Cards managed 4 runs combined in the two games on just 10 combined hits. On Sunday, things got better as the offense put up 5 runs and Sonny Gray dominated the mound for the win.

Edmundo Sosa welcomed himself to his old/new team with 6 hits in the series as he played all 3 games giving guys days off. Alec Burleson went 4 for 4 on Sunday with a homerun and 3 RBIs in the 5-2 victory.

The Cardinals are off on Monday as they travel to Kansas City for a 3 game series with the Royals before travelling to Boston for a 3 game weekend series with the Red Sox to close out the first half of the season.

Jackie Maurer Hits First Career Homerun
                        September 7, 2029

The first homerun. It's a big milestone for any big leaguer, but it feels especially big when it's a player of Maurer's caliber. Not only is it a first, but it also feels like a sign of things to come. SS Jackie Maurer came into the year as the #4 prospect in the Mets' system, and was called up midway through August when 2B Steven Logan tweaked his back and landed on the IL. Through 72 AB, Jackie is slashing .222/.345/.333 with 5 2B, 1 HR, and 6 RBI. He has 13 walks, but he's also struggled with the strikeout, recording 23 K through his first 21 G.

The 2026 first-round pick is billed as the Shortstop of the future, and he has all the tools to fit the bill. At just 22 years old, he has an excellent glove at a premier defensive position, and he has the ability to play all over the infield except for first base. He also hits from both sides of the plate, his homerun coming as a righty. The rookie has shown flashes at the big league level of being able to drive the ball into the gaps and potential 20 HR power as he gets more experience and strength. That, as well as his stellar defense, has him pegged as a future star within the organization.

His time is right around the corner, if not already arrived. He's been thrust into an every day role with 2B Steven Logan being lost for the year, but the left side of the infield will soon be his home permanently. Long-time Met 3B Rafael Devers is in the last year of his contract, and it looks unlikely that the Mets will bring him back even though he's had a great year (at the plate... not the field). And just one year later, Corey Seager's contract will be up. The Mets are hopeful that Maurer will continue to grow and will make the prospect of a potential Seager departure sting a little bit less.

#1 for #23. The first of many.

RHP Shipman to the IL, LHP Salazar Recalled

RHP Barney Shipman is headed to the IL. He felt a twinge in his elbow during his relief appearance tonight and was promptly removed from the game fearing the worst. Luckily, the MRI came back negative and it is just a sprain. He should be ready to go by the time the minimum 15 days on the IL are up.

Shipman has been been a steady presence in the bullpen for each of the last 5 years. In 2029, he's appeared in 43 games. His ERA is 3.14 and he sports a 0.97 WHIP with 43 K. The Mets are fortunate that he'll be available come playoff time.

Replacing Shipman on the roster is LHP Johan Salazar. In 30.2 IP down in Syracuse he's pitched to a 0.88 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 27 K. Salazar features a fastball that tops out around 95, as well as a slow curve he uses to keep hitters off balance. The 34 year old is a career Minor Leaguer and finally made his way onto a 40-man roster this spring. Several organizational injuries have given him his opportunity and he hopes to make the most of it.

Texas Rangers Update Season 3 MOM

Well 20 games in to the season and it's already gloom and doom. During game 5 Cory Seagar tore his ACL and is out for the season. The Rangers are 8-12 currently. They are lucky the division is off to a slow start as we are only a game and half out of 1st. We simply have no offense. Kyle Tucker continues to look like a big fa bust. After hitting only 250 last year with 21 hrs and 72 rbis he is off to a 150 start this season. Jake Bauers has been a bright light with 5 hrs. I'm trying to look at the positives but when you lose your franchise player in game 5 it's hard

NL East Crown Stays In NY
                            September 10, 2029

For the 4th year in a row and the 11th time in the last 13 years, the New York Mets are your NL East Champions! The Atlanta Braves lost 6-0 earlier this afternoon, which clinched the division for the Metsies. The Mets (97-50) open up a home series against the Phillies tonight, but I'm sure the mood in the ballpark will be jovial, win or lose.

New York has been on a tear since the current regime came to town in 2016. This run is reminiscent of the Atlanta Braves in the late 90s and early 2000s when they rattled off 11 straight years of NL East dominance. However, these Mets teams have been far more likeable.

The NL East race has been a formality since the All Star Break. The Mets paced the division for the entire year and had built up a double digit game lead come the Midsummer Classic. Barring anything drastic, this was the Mets division to lose. They've handled their business and have also clinched the best record in the NL. Home field is theirs throughout the playoffs.

Look for them to focus on getting their "guys" rested for what is hoped to be another deep postseason run. There will be more at bats for the likes of SS Jackie Maurer, OF Henry Armas, OF Nick Karnitz, 3B Barney Nowak, and C Roosevelt Fox. However, this is professional sports, and the veterans are always thinking about their next contract. Management will be sure to find at bats for them down the stretch. On the pitching side, the Mets plan to keep their rotation on regular rest, for the most part, to keep them in rhythm as the postseason approaches.

On a more sentimental note, there is one player who has been on the roster for every game the last 13 years - Michael Conforto. He's the most decorated player in team history, pitcher or otherwise. He won the MVP in 2019 and 2021, and recorded his 500th career HR earlier this season. The 36 year old has been everything you could ask for in a franchise cornerstone, and he is a sure fire Hall of Famer. Given his age and sharp decline in production this season, don't be surprised if this is his last hoorah. Although, he's keeping that decision close to the vest for now.

The best time of year is right around the corner.

                              2025 Cincinnati Reds

                              8-5, 1st in NL Central

The Reds started off their campaign going 5-5 in their first ten games, before traveling to San Fransisco and sweeping the Giants in three games. It was not an easy sweep, however. Hunter Greene gave up four runs to start the series, before the Reds drive in six unanswered runs (from five different players). Nick Lodolo shut down the Giants offense in game two, and Cincy once again rallied in game 3, scoring four runs in the 8th after being held at bay by Justin Verlander. It’s worth noting that neither team hit a home run in the entire series, which is partially due to Oracle Park, but it shows that these teams, especially Cincinnati, have multiple ways they can win games.

The Reds will have an off day to return home, where they will play the Pirates (7-6) in the next series. They will be without RBI leader Jaimer Candelario (bruised hand) and Christian Encarnacion Strand (strained bicep) for at least part of the series.

To add on to my last post: I just finished the first game of the Pirates' series...the bullpen blew a 3-1 lead in the eighth and then both teams would go back and forth until the thirteenth when Austin Hays hit a line drive to score Elly de la Cruz for the win. Once again, five different players drove in runs for Cincinnati. My goodness is this team fun!
