Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Finished off the last affinity map. Also went through and bought a bunch more NL cards. Should have another team or two knocked out once orders go through but all maps are done. Still have the affinity showdowns for a rainy day.
Probably should get going on the event. I go back to work Sunday so I have a couple days. Probably won't play much tomorrow so Friday and Saturday would be big grind days. I need to do better this year of getting a couple wins a day or every couple days instead of grinding the event all day. I enjoy it way less when I grind out the event in one sitting.
About ready for ranked, too. But then there's BR as well. Just way too much to do as always which is a good thing but also a curse.Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment

That may have been their plan all along. I was able to pick up Edmonds and was trying to save up for Arenado and Goldschmidt for the live series collection. Now I have another Cardinal to go after/save for.Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Finished-off the AL West map last night and then started the TA Mini Season to change things-up.
I have to say, I appreciate the efforts SDS has made to mini seasons and I think I am going to enjoy the "specialty" mini seasons a lot more than the "standard" ones from last year. Their approach really scratched two major itches for me; adding an offline mode with roster restrictions (stimulating creativity in roster construction, especially with the Captain functionality) and giving a more interesting mix of teams/players to face vs dealing with "meta squads" which I am sure are chock-full of those WBC cards right now. It definitely feels more like a "league" now vs a collection of games on a schedule.
That said, I AM missing being able to use my two studs in the MS run (the flashback Castellanos and AS Kaline). BUT, it is going to give me an opportunity to enjoy finding other fun cards to use.
As an aside, is anyone else finding it tougher to want to use some of the LS team collection cards with them all being captains? It might sound silly, but they feel less "real" to me without the classic Topps artwork on them.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment

I think they're super limited being live series only boosts. With so many cards, I'm not sure how many people are taking true live series builds online or into modes. Then again, with team affinity back it can really make a whole new experience for those that do that.Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Yeah, the live series collection cards haven't really gotten a look from me. With all the other cards available, they aren't the top-tier cards we're used to seeing from those collections. I'm ok with this - I'm having a blast with all the other cards. But I do love that they really went all in with the team building.

I will say though, I think with the right captain/LS team, you could put together a pretty solid roster. That said, I think the Tier III boost requirements are just a touch overboard and offer folks less flexibility to add additional themed players to their roster.
I think it would be cool if SDS did an Event (and/or Mini Season) this year where the requirement is that your team must have both a Tier III hitting captain and pitching captain.
Edit: As an aside papadell....love the articles you've been writing here for OS on DD. While many of them are basic for someone like me who has been engaged in DD for a number of years, I love the outreach to newer players and the concise approach in writing.Last edited by JoshC1977; 03-30-2023, 10:52 AM.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Well, for me, it's not even about the quality of the collection cards (I've barely touched the WBC cards or any of the other OP cards); but more the aesthetics. Like, they just feel, I don't know...more generic or something being Captain cards vs having the real artwork. I think it's just a weird mental block on my part, lol.

Also - thank you! I love writing and finding a niche where I can do something productive based around a hobby I already enjoy has been a blast. If any of these articles help a single person then it feels like time well spent. I'm trying to get better at keeping them concise versus being overly wordy. That way, they're easier for new players to get a grasp on and still a clean read for someone that might not be getting any new information out of it.
Thank you for reading and the feedback!Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Up to 550k, just finished br and sold Vaughn
Still haven't opened 3 charisma packs, the boss pack and two xp wbc packs so my squad will be pretty different whenever I do
I'll do another br to get those extra 15 points for 25k pxp. Will get 3k stubs and a Ballin pack
Absolutely no idea what to do with my 550k. Last year I just bought cards I wanted and this year I would Def like Jeter and Sosa for a long time. The set 1 collection being limited... We will see where I'm at after TA I guessLast edited by ValhallaVikings; 03-30-2023, 12:27 PM.Comment

I'm not sure what kind of rhythm I'll have playing all year, either. So if I play events up to the rewards, I'm not sure if I'll keep or sell to try and maximize profits. Might have to just keep to work on the set collections versus selling.Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment

Getting a good group of core players paralleled nicely could be a boon throughout the year as new Captains get released. Once we get to Season 3 and those Set 1 cards are no longer eligible for critical modes, I think that a person who has built-up a strong group of Core players could potentially have an advantage early-on.
But who knows? And that's kind of the beauty of the mode this year...I'm not sure there is a right/wrong way of doing things. I guess my best advice is to have a definite goal/approach in mind of what you want to achieve and stick with it. I think there are a few possible strategies:
- The 'core heavy' approach. Theoretically, it should nearly always be competitive and may be able to quickly take advantage of newly released Captain cards for thematic builds, but will likely not always have the absolute best team.
- The 'mixed approach'. A flexible approach using the current Sets and Core players, but one where you'd either need to be doing everything (which is not viable for most) or be willing to turn over at least part of one's roster throughout the year. What's interesting here is that achieving high levels of success may be entirely dependent on time investment; but it's also a great approach for folks looking for a more laid-back experience (i.e. the "I'll take what I can get" approach)
- The 'set heavy' approach (AKA "the OVR chasers"). Going for the newest power cards (such as the WBC cards in Set 1). Might be the most "expensive" approach (in both stubs/time) but would also give people consistently strong teams with possibly harsher "restarts" after each season ends.
What we don't know yet is how certain card series types will be classified. For example, will series like Topps Now/Monthly Awards be classified as 'core' or 'set'? There could be a good argument for both....I'm guessing we'll know in about a week when the first Topps Now drops.
Sorry...I went a little crazy on the reply there. Something about this mode this year just gets my wheels turning....Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
I'm focused on Sammy with the live series and the rest of my progress will be determined by pack pulls. I need that Chipper ASAP and he'll most likely be my wild card all year. Once I get Sammy, I'll start focusing on set 1 cards through grinding and buying.
I'm not sure what kind of rhythm I'll have playing all year, either. So if I play events up to the rewards, I'm not sure if I'll keep or sell to try and maximize profits. Might have to just keep to work on the set collections versus selling.
If they event rewind then I'll definetly try to grind that as quick as possible and sell while the price is high then scoop up after 5 wins in the next event
I've had fun playing events and br but I'm definetly glad to get back to the offline stuff for the weekend for some rest. Competition is still higher at the moment online. I've had like 3 or 4 early quits and zero dashboards so far. Only had one bunt cheeser guy so from that standpoint online has been pretty good so far as well
Only thing I don't dive in too much is ranked.
But yeah I'm Def more intrigued by cards I can keep and use all year.Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Unless you're absolutely dying to play with one of the Set 1 collection guys (or collect them all), I personally love the idea of building-up just enough Set 1/Core to be as competitive this season as you want to be but otherwise eschew the Set 1 cards and focus on the getting/paralleling the Core guys you will have all year.

I can't get these guys to P5 in 2 months usually since I'm doing almost every aspect of DD... And most offline stuff and showdowns, etc im obviously not making any progress on that end.
I do need to prioritize core cards so I can work on them all year.Comment

Re: What Are You Working On? - MLB The Show 23 Edition
Well I got a lot of stuff done, I felt I have a good competitive team with mostly 95 and 97s. So I venture into online play against other people. I've only played 1 online game before this year and it was like 3 years ago. I played an event game to start things off and I proceeded to get no hit lol. I was early as hell on everything and when i tried to wait then i was too late. Pitching just seemed so much slower and it wasnt laggy or anything like that just seemed slower. Been playing most offline on the same difficulty so idk guess i just suck lol.
Was gonna try and knock out event wins to help speed things up but if all my games are gonna be like that i'll stick to the cpu i reckon.Comment

The game is also way faster paced. Even if you play with fast play turned on for offline, human players are slapping through every screen and the ball is coming at you quicker. You have to learn the online pacing before you really get comfortable. You'll have some weaknesses that are obvious but you'll get better over time.
It's a tough game online until you're used to it. Truthfully - you have to accept your lumps in the beginning and then you'll start to adjust. We've all been there.Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment
