Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

On default difficulty I'm guessing it's probably just my horrible hitting, avg about 4-5 per game but in about 10 games I've only had 1-2 doubles. And those are either from the outfielders misplaying the ball or I get lucky and hit it off the wall or something. The ones that I think should be doubles, the OF's get to the ball too quick. Maybe I'm just too conservative and would actually be save, not sure but it doesn't look like it. It seems everything for me is either a single or HR. I'd say 90% of my scoring is coming off the long ball.

I still love the pitching, how no matter who the AI is, they can hit the exact same spot in the corner 4 pitches in a row. Where as my pitcher, no matter how good he is, can't even come close to hitting the same spot no matter how well I time the meter. I also find it strange how one time I can time it perfect but the ball is a mile from where I put the marker. Another time I'll be way off on the timing and it'll be right where I want it. And yet another I'll be barely off and it'll be a mile away. The inconsistency makes me about ready to switch to classic pitching.

And I don't know why but everytime I try to guess pitch, low and x, with a runner on third they alway try a early steal. Which, when was the last time you actually saw someone try to steal before the pitch was thrown? It also done it on 08.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

I had a very enjoyable game last night, even though the CPU did something to me I've never had done before. Yep, I got no-hit. It was actually very satisfying, though, as the whole game was a pitcher's duel. It was the Mets (me) @ the Cubs, Johan vs Z. I only gave up 4 hits but they made the most of them, beating me 2-0. One of their runs was scored without a hit. I walked Soriano and he stole second, went to third on a ground ball to the right side and then scored on a sac fly to LF. The other run was on a double by Milton Bradley that was in the very corner of RF. It seemed like it took forever to get to that ball, scoring the runner from first. I think my hands started getting sweaty around the 7th or 8th at the thought of being no-hit. I loved it! Here's Zambrano's line and the celebratory pic. BTW, it wasn't a perfect game. It says no walks, but he had a HBP. I ended the game with Reyes lining out to CF, and Beltran flied out at the wall his last at bat.

Yeah I know. It's just when blatant BS is spewed it irritates me especially when we know the quaility and hard work put into the game.
But you're right and I'm done with these posts. Critique the game for things it deserves, fine but saying things that are not even remotely accurate then "whatever'...

I'm just going to enjoy the game and get my settings done and GAME ON!!

I didn't come close to blasting the game. I simply stated a few things that are irritating me at the moment. In fact, I just played a game using the Cubs vs. the Reds and won 10-0. The only problem that I saw was, out of my 15 hits, 14 were singles. I really hope this changes eventually.

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Played only my second full game since I got my early copy, lol. I'm amazed

Playing on VET, pitch speed down, default sliders until the 5th when I raised my contact/power sliders 3 to the right. (still experimenting)

A's 1 8 1 (Chavez had an error at third)
                    Cle 5 6 0

Holliday and Sweeney hit doubles for the As
Sweeney dropped a tough line drive in CF, but was given a hit to the batter as it should have been

                    Martinez had a solo HR
Sizemore had a 3 run homer
                    Cabrera stole second for me

My pitchers had eight strike outs and I walked two batters (Laffey had them both)
I struck out seven times. Didn't draw a walk.
Blevens threw a wild pitch on a third strike (yeah, I shouldn't have swung and my runner advance)

Barton fielded a ball hit down the first base line and went far into foul territory. Blevens covered, but overran the bag, however he quickly tapped his left foot back to find the bag (real nice animation on that one)

Garko had a ball get by him down the first base line, a scorcher that ate him up. I watched the replay and it was spot on.

Man, you better judge your diving right this year, if not you may dive over a ball. They have definitely got this working this year, no more dive and either get a glove on it, or knock it down.

                    As grounded into 3 double plays, 6/4/3, 3/6/1, 4/6/3

Kerry Wood made a great play on a ball hit to his right up the middle.

Man, I'm really anxious to start my season. This coupled with all the great sounds added from the sound editor. I added the sound from the movie Major Leagues, "Wild Thing" with the owner saying "I hate this f#$INg song" when Wood came in. Hilarious.

                    I'm impressed.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

There is no doubt this game has issues. CPU doesn't swing at enought balls, sliders don't work as well as I thought they would, WAY to many singles. It's a good game, but for people to say it's perfect is absolutely ridiculous. IMO.
Each gamer is different. I made a fool out of two As batters in the game above, had them both chasing bad pitches out of the zone. Plus there are batters I've had 0-2 where they haven't even lifted the bat off their shoulders, so CPU batters don't swing at everything in the zone either.

You simply don't understand the philosophy behind sliders. The game has been on the streets, what 4 days? There ARE those gamers who want to be immediately satisfied out of the box. That will never happen. I suggest you do some testing.

This game is fabulous for me. To say it's perfect is also not ridiculous. The game between the lines is just awesome. I can't wait to start a season in a week or so.

It just seems like it's an "average-out" type of thing. I really don't think playing 4-5 games or even 10 can give you a great read on the game and how it will play.

I use the Mets and last night I K'd 6 in 7 innings with Santana. Then I K'd one with Putz in the 8th and 2 with K-Rod in the 9th v Texas.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

My impressions of the game so far. Only playing a couple online games and now being about a month into my RTTS. Most of these will be negatives as the positives we all already know about and no point of saying the same things over and over.

                          - only played the show 08 on my ps2 last year and now having it on he ps3, it doesn't feel any newer. Only playing rtts, for now, like last year and it doesn't feel any different. Good cause it was very good last year but bad cause I'm sure the ps2 version of 09 would've done just fine for me this year
-this is supposed to be a real sim with great stat tracking and all, so why is 2008 the only year shown on the back of player cards?
-many of the cut scenes just do not stitch together at all. I hit a grounder and get thrown out at 1st for the 3rd out. As I run past first I veer off into foul territory with my head low and head to he dugout. Begin cut scene with my guy rounding 1st towards 2nd base then turning around and going to the dug out. WTF? Or fielding at 3rd base almost into left field and throwing guy out for the 3rd out at 2nd and heading past 3rd base towards the dugout to the right. Begin cut scene with my guy at 2nd base chatting with the short stop. WTF?
-at beginning of every RTTS game for one second there is that fly by looking thing. It looks like a glitch every time. Either looking from under the field or going through walls or super speed where you can see anyhing.
                          - being the 2nd baseman running to 2nd to receive the throw to start a double play, I will be stopped by some magic field feet away from he base and can't move til the ball gets to me.
-The sliding glitch I had in the demo where the firs baseman slid backwards from he outfield to 1st base, happens at 3rd base
-minor league (AA) pitchers having 5 very solid pitches and a few have 3-4 pitches that are all 95mph+ and paint the corners consistently.
-Having 0 and I mean ZERO collision detection kinda gets irritating when a few times a game there are some dude's body parts in another guy's body. Yes I know they said no collision detectin. Doesn't mean it isn't annoying.
-having some 300 songs I imported just for the game ALL be in my playlist is just great! Besides the awful commentary, for the most part, the audio is just great. "For Campbell, Rex Hudler, and Rex's hair, this is vasgursian saying goodbye". That's funny...
-There's are a few oher small things that impede the game a bit but I seem to have forgotten them.
-Oh, I have kilzone2 and resident evil 5 all sitting in front of me and I have no urge to play either as this game is keeping me glued to the screen despite all these things.

The issue with trying to see what sliders adjust is that we don't even know what default is really like just yet.

I've played five full games and each has been a different experience. One game I hit four homeruns. The other game I walk 5 times. The next I hit no homeruns, get 7 singles, a double, and a triple. The last game I get 5 hits and three of them are extra base hits. It's just so random that I couldn't even tell you where to start with sliders.

When I see that sort of randomness (a good randomness), I don't see a reason to adjust sliders because what am I trying to adjust?

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

                              YankeePride,

This is because they worked so hard on individual player attributes actually making a difference this year. I didn't get the feeling of player differences like I am this year. I'm the same way with the sliders. I'm just not going to really start messing with them, if at all, until I think I've got a problem. So far I don't. The only thing I'm really touching is pitch speed all the way to the left. In my previous post I adjusted two hit sliders a tad in the 5th, but other than that...that's it.

I'm also seeing guys struggling on Legend and complaining about not being able to hit, frustrated, etc. I'm playing on VET and I played on HOF last year.

                                Two more things.
                                - rounding 1st base it seems no matter what I press or hold on the d-pad, besides down, my guy runs to 2nd. Of course when I turn him around and let go of the stick as he's almost at the base, his right foot is clearly visible on the BACK of the plate, not in front, yet I get tagged out. I guess I let go of the stick too early and the animation didn't start where he turns on the base and faces the infield. How was I supposed to know that? His foot was on the bag and I was afraid to press any direction in fear he would go to 2nd. This happened 3 or 4 times already.
                                - The useless screen with the 3rd base coach giving me signs, well only the hit and run sign so far in the 30 times I've seen it. Only to fail the attempt simply cause 80-90% of the time the ball is unhittable. This was an issue last year as well. Why am I being penalized when I can't do anything about it?
