Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
I haven't read through this thread, so I don't know what everyone else has said, but here are my impressions after playing 5 or 6 games in the last couple of days:
-The graphics and the framerate are top-notch; the new lighting looks great
- I love all the new batting and pitching animations, and I'm glad they changed the default generic 1 batting stance because I've always hated it. But.. I wish they would have also gotten rid of those really old generic windups for pitchers, but whatever.
-The throwing meter still has like no effect. But I like the new fielding animations.
-Last year I rarely walked batters, but with Legend Mode I walked 3 batters in my first game (which is a good thing for me, more realism). Pitch counts are a lot more realistic.
-At the same time though, I'm finding it really hard to strike out cpu batters which is odd because I did fine in the demo and last year I averaged about a K per inning on HOF. Hitters seem more aggressive on pitches thrown inside the strike zone. I might have to tweak sliders a bit or something because I didn't strike out anyone in my last game (which is unheard of for me).
-Hitting is definitely harder for me on Legend, but I like the challenge, and I'm drawing walks which is great.
-40-man rosters make spring training way more fun
-I can finally edit a pitcher's velocity without having to guess how hard he's gonna throw.. thank god for the numbers next to the meters.
-New Yankee Stadium rocks
-I'm digging the soundtrack too
-I still have yet to try road to the show, franchise and online play, but I will.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
My only gripe with this game last year was hitting. The ball physics were just weird to me. It seemed every hit was a line drive. Has this been tweaked at all??
Also, a lot of the batting stances seemed too similarComment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
There seems to be more hit variety. I can't really tell how much different it is from last year though. They changed a lot of the batting stances and added new ones, so there's a lot less similarity between them.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
If you put the time in and do all the "little things" with music/chants/cheers etc it ramps this game up even one more notch.
Simply incredible SECA!!
have 550 walk ups and over 700 mic inputs ready to go all set and on paper mapped and ready to go.
come on Knight I need a set roster stop slacking
I'm in more anticipation now than I was waiting between demo and real thing believe it or not

Just when you fear that you're doing too good on the pitching side, Tampa Bay comes to Boston and destroys you 18-1. That's right. And here I was striking out 5 batters into the third inning with Beckett. Then it all fell apart.
No matter what I threw, the Rays made contact and found a way to get on base. I'm pretty sure that every out was a deep fly ball. (Ok, I'm lying, but it felt like they hit everything hard).
To top it all off, Gabe Kaper (yea...) had two doubles before he decided that he needed a grand slam too. Wow.
Thanks to Jason Bay for at least providing some offense with a solo shot. Kazmir had my number."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
I just had a great 2 games on exhibition mode. Man this game is just pure awesome.....can't believe the improvement they made from 08. Just much better overall game experience.
Anyways....
First game I lost 7-3 as the Yanks to the Sox. Had Pettite pitching against Beckett....held the lead 3-1 till the 7th then everything just fell apart.
I had 6 hits 1 Hr 2 doubles
Sox had 10 hits 2 Hrs and 2 Dbles.
I was actually yelling out loud in this game when I was masterfully pitching with Pettite. Got only 3 Ks with him in 6 2/3 but man did I fool a lot of sox hitters. Shame the pen had to blow it.....I was yelling then too hehe
the 2nd game was possibly the BEST ever sports game I have ever played.....( went 21 damn innings!!)
pirates at astros.....
jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a 2 run Homerun.....they tied 2-2 after manufacturing some runs.
I take the lead again 3-2 on the long ball but then they take the lead on a bases loaded 2 out 2 run single.
top of the 8th I get a leadoff double, bunt the man to third and ground out rbi.
Well for the next 13 innings it was just me choking at the plate due to the pressure ( my hands were sweating, never happened to me before because I BADLY wanted this win)
.....anyways, bottom of the 17th Astros got 2 singles to result in a first and third no body out. At this point I was a bit depressed because you don't know how it feels to go that long and not get the win. So the next play the cpu tried to do a suicide squeeze, but the bunt was sort of a mini line drive to the 3rd baseman, caught the ball one out, ran back to third which was close by ( DUH) 2 outs and gunned a throw to get the runner on 1st because he also advanced on the bunt....
TRIPLE Froggin PLAY!.......In the Demo I hit my first ever inside the parker, and tonite I made my first triple play.....
we play on till the top of the 21st just unreal and drove a long double in the gap to score men on 1st and 2nd.....
Bucs closer did his thing I get the 6-4 win and boy was it satisfying....I am still on cloud nine right now....
Just the best ever game I've played period.
For people complaining about no doubles, I have had pletny of doubles using this slider set for user hitting:
contact, solid hits, timing all Zeroed
power at 3/10
no guess pitch/power swing
8/10 pitch speed
fielder speed dflt and fielder reaction MAX
LEGEND!
doubles are no problem , not one bit.
For people that think CPU don't get fooled:
I Ked a total of 15 batters in my 21 inning fest
I also Ked 12 using Lincecum one game
Half of the strike outs were on balls out of the zone
Learn how to play the game realistically and set up your hitters and make them look like fools.....nothing more satisfying. Last year I hated pitching because the CPU had no brains, this year it is just a great great feelLast edited by phillyfan23; 03-07-2009, 06:22 AM.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
I'm really enjoying the new legend mode. I started a mini 14 game season with the Mariners and have had 3 very different games. I also have begun to use the API, which helps my pitcher actually get some walks.
1st game - @ BOS - BOS wins 10-3. Felix was wild and gave up 4 walks in the game. In the 6th, Boston scored 5 runs on 4 homers.
2nd game - vs NYY - NYY wins 2-1. Pitchers duel between Joba and Bedard. I tie it up in the bottom of the 8th (1-1) after a two out double by Yunny followed by a clutch single by Ichiro. Ichiro's at-bat was intense and very rewarding when I got the hit. Yanks came back in the top of 9 to score and win 2-1. I also issued 5 BB total in the game.
3rd Game - @TB - Morrow vs Price - I win 12-1. At one point in the game we both had 7 hits, but the score was 6-0 in my favor. I came through with some clutch homers, and they couldn't deliver with men on base. Broke the game open with a 6 run 8th, highlighted by an Ichiro GS. There was about 400 brave fans that stuck it out in the 9th.
I hope the 14 game season will allow me to make any gameplay tweaks that I see needed. This game is epic in my opinion.Seattle Pilots GM (2011 - ) Record: 152 - 195

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
As far as passed balls go this year, my brother is having a big issue with it as well but it seems to be tied to Meter pitching far more than classic since I'm not having any big issues with it. When I briefly tried Meter pitching, 4 out of my 5 pitches got behind the catcher. It's very punishing if you miss your spots this year - far more than any of the past versions of the Show imo. There is no passed ball/wild pitch slider this year but you should be able to cut down wild pitches by boosting pitcher consistency.Comment

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
I just won a game by hitting back to back jacks in the bottom of the 9th. Hit a 2 run homer to tie the game at 7 and then the next batter up 1-1 hanging curve and I jacked it 376ft to left field for the win.
I was playing as Memphis vs Scranton Wilkes-Barre....I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions
So does the user profile actually work this year? If it does that would be a great way to track your own stats and go from there with slider adjustments (if necessary). BTW still waiting for the game over here in Europe, so if anyone knows feel free to answer.
