    Actually progressing in franchise mode.

Baseball video games have always been my favorite sports video games. Rivaled only in recent years by EA's NHL games. However, there is still a special place in my heart (yeah, I said it) for a good baseball video game. And ever since the incorporation of franchise modes I've set out to complete multiple years. But to no avail. It never fails. From All-Star Baseball to MVP, to MLB The Show I rarely, if ever get to the post season.

This is obviously because I play every single game. No simulating. All of this is a bit frustrating because I love the idea of developing prospects, bringing them up through the minors and turning them into Major League studs. I love the idea of trying to sign key free agents in the offseason and offload unneeded salary. But I've never gotten that far.

This year will be different. I am determined. But, there is only one catch. I have came to the realization that I cannot play every single game if I wish to do this. I'm going to have to give in and simulate some games from time to time to do the things I want to do.

My question is, for those of you guys who succeed at getting 5, 10, or 15 years into franchise, how do you do it? What games to you choose to simulate? I need to develop a system because if I go into my franchise this year with no plan I'll end up never simulating and therefore not finishing a year. So again, what strategies do you guys employ to insure that your franchises actually progress beyond the first season?

I always play the first game in a series, and win or lose I sim the second game. I play the third game if the series is split or I'm down 0-2, if I'm up 2-0 I sim the third game as well.

Helps me get through seasons, I usually still play about 115 games or so.

Cool. That's still a lot of games to me (which isn't a bad thing). I just don't have the time to complete multiple seasons at that rate. I'm thinking about playing 2 or 3 in a divisional game and only playing one for out-of-division games.

even just playing the first game of every series should get you going through the season pretty quickly, as that would be like 50 games.

It all really depends on the time you have and whatnot.

I nerd it up and figure it out with a calendar before the season starts. Forty games.

              4 against division (16)
2 against other AL teams (18)
              6 games for interleague (6)

Lets me see every stadium that the Jays play in, and lets me get through multiple seasons. And if I'm in it come September, then I can play every game and get the pennant race feeling and still play only around 60 games which still isn't a ton.

Re: Strategy for completing multiple franchise years

I don't understand why people feel the need to give themselves a deadline. It's not like a new version of the game coming out means you have to throw away the old one. Just play the games when you have time. I had an NFL game where I played the Jets to a Super Bowl season and I think it took me more than 2 years to play one season.

Unless my PS3 or the game disc breaks, I can play MLB 10 for years to come and get a much more enjoyable experience than if I simmed a bunch of games just to try to finish by a certain date.

I've got one 30-team Franchise where I'm planning on "playing along" with the 2011 season as it goes, so when the real baseball season hits, I'll probably focus on that, but I'll still be playing my other Franchise and Season modes when I can as well as my RTTS players to see how their careers develop. There's so much to do on this game I can't fathom how anyone could ever feel like they have to rush it.

I play the first game of the year then the rule is i play the next game with the second SP as long as its in the next series. Then the 3rd SP ... Again cant be in the same series as my previous game played.. Etc...

This is what I'm going to do this year.

I am playing every game in MLB 10 and 9 months later (bought my PS3 Slim and that game in May of last year), I haven't reached the All-Star Break in either of my 2 franchises. Of course, if I had just stuck with one team, I'd be just about done with a complete season but even still, look how long that would've taken me.

I have played the first few games of a series & then simm the last one. Helps speed things up. Also, if the game i'm playing is a blow out I just simm the rest of the game.

I also like the play every 3rd day idea; 54 games is certainly manageable.

My system I do is I play every game against a divisional opponent, the last game of a 3 game series, the last two of a 4 game series, any matchup that catches my eye I'll break away from it. It keeps things fresh for me. My old system was pitch with Johan every start then go down the line with every guy in the rotation from there. Ex: 1, sim, 1, 2, sim, 1, 3, sim, and so on...but to each their own. I also try and get another franchise where I play every game until it pisses me off and I sim it haha

Edit: I just created a spreadsheet to keep track of teams played along with the breakdown of my record by division including inter-league play. I know some of this will be tracked by profile, but I'll have a hard time remembering who I've already played.
