No Copying of Saved Game Files Kills Me...

After learning from Countryboy that you can no longer copy saved game files and the fact that there is no online franchise, I'm at a loss. My brother and I used to circumvent the no online franchise by emailing our franchise file back and forth...cumbersome...but it worked great. Now we are dead in the water.

Online season play isn't appealing to us because there is no continuation. One and done. We like to play through multiple shortened seasons, watching our teams (and the league) change with free agent moves and new talent coming up from the minors. I find franchise mode is just so much more enjoyable when you are involved with other human controlled teams.

I know this is a function of the PS3 and not The Show, but its still very disappointing. Good thing I love RTTS as much as I do. *sigh*

It is kind of a bummer as I have a PS3 at home...and one I use for when I'm at ....well...not home ....and I used to just use the franchise save to keep moving it back and forth.

This has to do with the trophies more than anything I assume.
Now...I heard that we'd be able to share our files between PS3 and the new PSP....so I wonder where this lies with that?

Man, that is definitely a bummer.

It was so nice last year to be able to d/l a franchise file with Knight's roster. Looks like I'll have to edit all the 40-man rosters myself after I play through spring training. Oh well.. not the end of the world.

I'm not one to go on negative rants often, but what a load of crap it is that they have to do all of this for trophies. If that is indeed the case here, that is truly disappointing. I have to lose functionality in my favorite game because there are losers out there who want to cheat on trophies..?? Is that what's causing this to happen? And even if there are people who cheat to get trophies, who gives a ****? They're just trophies... why does the PSN have to do something like this to make them secure?? It's just a message that pops up when you do something noteworthy in a game...

      Am I missing something here?

Copied from the Q&A thread as it's relevant here:

That...could be interesting if the lineups still get rearranged after ST. One of the workarounds for that was for someone to upload a franchise simmed to the start of a regular season. If the franchise saves are locked as you say, that won't be happening this year.

This doesn't really affect me as I actually LIKE seeing what the AI does with the lineups (I'm not as attached to the names as some people are), but it could definitely be an issue for those who want the lineups they set to stick. Like CB said they did patch GT5 on this issue, so hopefully that can be done here too.

Each title can handle whether the saved data files are copy protected or not. The decision to make them locked was made by The Show development team most likely to prevent some sort of exploit.

Also, it is not certain that the reason they are copy protected is for trophies. The PS3 has the capability to disable trophies if you are using someone elses save file.

actually it wasn't. It was done by the PSN.

I don't think that's possible. If you go into the Saved Data Utility, find the Franchise file, press Triangle and go to Information I bet it says Copy Protected next to Lock.

I spoke to Russell about this. He told me that it wasn't something they(the developers) did it was done by Sony(PSN).

It may have been that PSN required them to Copy Protect certain files in which you can purchase items. For example, maybe they didn't like that you could buy Budget Points and Training Points and then share them with your friends.

Re: No Copying of Saved Game Files Kills Me...

This is really some BS. You should have the intrinsic right to be able to backup save files in case of a hard drive crash or hardware failure. You can use the backup feature to backup all your saves including protected saves but you can only restore protected saves to the console they were backed up from. So, if your PS3 breaks (YLOD usually) and you buy a new PS3 or send it to Sony (who sends you back a different system), you won't be able to restore those protected saves. You literally have to go to a 3rd party to get your system fixed and be able to retain your protected saves.

I know most of the time the Developer decides to lock their save files. However, I blame Sony for every protected save because protected saves are allowed for by the firmware which is made by Sony. If the firmware didn't allow for protected saves, they wouldn't be possible.

If this was done for trophy purposes, this is complete BS because trophies are literally meaningless, but having a backup of my save file is very MEANINGFUL.

If this was done to stop people from sharing training points or whatever, it is still unacceptable. Sony, find a way to keep people from sharing stuff without removing basic features. The only reason the PS3 got hacked is because Sony removed the OtherOS feature.

Re: No Copying of Saved Game Files Kills Me...

What's the point of a save feature if it doesn't allow us to save the data in case of catastrophic failure...?

I don't understand this as people say different things. Are these protected save files locked to the hardware, i.e., each console by some S/N in firmware or something, or to our PSN accounts?

For now I can be happy if I am at least able to restore to the original from a flash drive, but... Sony does have a history of poorly implemented copy protection schemes which only frustrate honest users.

this is very dissapointing news because if my ps3 gets yold i wont be able to recover my fanchise and i seme to have bad luck with sytem. I am already on my second ps3 because my first on got yold affter 2.5 years and i have had my new one for 1.5 years also last gen i owned a game cube and i am now on my 3 one this almost make me think that i should just keep mlb 10 and not get 11.

I'm not sure what the saves are locked to but you can only restore backed up protected saves to the same console. And, the only way to move a protected save to another system is the data transfer utility that moves data from one PS3 to another and the data is deleted from the originating PS3.

you can also swap hard drives. I'm not sure if the old fatty hard drives will fit into the new slims, but if you currently have a slim and you YLOD, you could always ask to swap out the replacement PS3.
