    Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

I started a new franchise last week after some recent developments.

I only play games where my young starting pitching prospects pitch in the big league club (so to start my second year, Casey Kelly made the team as the 5th starter over Joe Wieland, but I made room for Wieland after his terrific minor league season by moving Tim Stauffer).

Through late-May 2013 my team looks like this:

    Starting Lineup:
    RF Ichiro
    3B Chase Headley
    1B Yonder Alonso
    LF Matt Clark R
    CF Cameron Maybin
    C Yasmani Grandal R
    2B Logan Forsythe
    SS Jeudy Valdez R

    Bench:
    C Jason Hagerty R
    LF Jesus Guzman
    2B Chris Getz
    CF Chris Denorfia
    SS Beamer Weems R

    Rotation:
    RHP Jair Jurrjens
RHP Joe Wieland (Making his MLB debut) R
    LHP Cory Luebke
    RHP Anthony Bass
    RHP Casey Kelly R

    LR Brett Tomko
    MR Brian Fuentes
    MR Javier Lopez
    MR Joe Thatcher
    SU Ernesto Frieri
    SU Grant Balfour
    CL Koji Uehara

    Other players of note:
    RHP Tim Stauffer (traded)
    LF Johnny Damon (traded)
SU Brad Boxberger (demoted to Triple-A, will be called back up as soon as a move a reliever) R

    My Top 10 Prospect list:
    RHP Robbie Erlin
    3B Matt Davidson
    RF Rymer Liriano
    RHP Keyvius Sampson
    C Austin Hedges
    LF Edinson Rincon
    SS Jace Peterson
    RHP Joe Ross
CL Columbus Cuevas (2012 First Round Pick)
    CF Donavan Tate

Joe Wieland would've slotted right behind Liriano. Casey Kelly right behind Matt Davidson. Yasmani Grandal in front of everyone.

Currently my team is 25-21, I've only played game Casey Kelly has pitched in so I'm 3-6 right now and I will be playing the games Joe Wieland pitches in.

      Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

Well im using OSFM spring training for my Twins franchise. My record is 28-35, but I was 19-31. My pitching has gone from a team era of 6.2 to 4.4. It took a lot of claiming guys and bringing them up but I've finally found my bullpen ( Minus a couple of spots that still are revolving doors. ) In the draft I got an A potential Power hitting RFer and a A potential C overall 2B with C contact and C power. Here are some stats off the top of my head..

      Span: .272 2 HRs 28 rbis 19 SB
Dozier: .380 2 hr 13 SB ( 8 doubles ) 2 sbs ( Called him up 15 games ago after caroll was hitting .209 ) Has shot up to 2nd in ROTY voting.
      Mauer: 270 ( was htting .330 but is like 2 for his last 50 ) 7 hrs 42 rbis
      Morneau: .328 24 hrs 55 rbis ( Leader for MVP )
      Willingham .202 11 hr 33 rbis
Doumit/Parmelee: Doumit, .300 1 hr 4 rbis ( Parmelee has been injured and doumit has been filling in ) Parmelee .270, 2 hr 9 rbi
      Valencia: .262 8 hr 30 rbis 22 doubles
      Revere: .290 0 hr 12 rbi 14 SB
      Casilla: .280 1 hr 18 rbi 13 SB

Solid lineup.. Don't know what to do with Wilingham

      Indians are 42-21..

      Rotation, I'll update next time.

        (Stealing Ben's bullet-point format here )

        • I started the season off terribly with an 8-16 record in the first month of the season.

        • Thankfully I was able to turn things around and get the ball rolling with an 18-8 month of May.

        • The Yankees, coming off an off-season in which Jeter, A-Rod, and Rivera all retired, were able to maintain their dominance despite those losses. It probably helped that they had a stacked rotation that included C.C. Sabathia, Roy Halladay (!!!), Chris Carpenter, and Tim Hudson.

        • Going into the All-Star break, I dug myself out of that early season hole and was in a race with the Yankees for the division crown.

        • The Rays were looking to get rid of David Price with him being in the final year of his deal, so I offered them J.P. Arencibia, Ervin Santana, and Eric Thames and they accepted. It was a big risk on my part because Travis D'Arnaud hadn't even been brought up beforehand, so I was in the thick of a playoff race with a rookie catcher coming into the lineup in the middle of the season.

        • I suffered a huge hit to my lineup in the first week of September when Carl Crawford went down with a fractured arm against the Rays, which essentially ended his season.

        • Closing in on the end of the season, the Yankees had a 3 game lead on me for the AL East crown. On the AL Wildcard side of things, the White Sox were a game back of me for that spot. File this under obvious foreshadowing.

        • The final series of the season for me came down to a division-deciding series against the Yankees. To win the AL East, I had to sweep the series on the road. I won the first game 4-2 on the arm of Drew Hutchison keeping the Yankees to just 5 hits. The second game was a matchup of each team's ace, with Romero and Sabathia on the mound. It was a scoreless game for the first 5 innings, but eventually the Yankees pulled away with a 3-0 shutout, ending my hopes of winning the AL East and also putting me on the brink of missing the playoffs as the White Sox took their first 2 games against the Twins. Facing a must-win situation, I of course had to try and overcome Roy Halladay. Luckily, things went the same way they did against Halladay as they did in last year's playoffs when he was pitching for the Rangers and I jumped all over him, taking the game 11-2.

        • However, the White Sox had to make things interesting by sweeping the Twins to close out their season, leaving us with a 1 game playoff to decide who would take that AL wildcard spot. It was a super-tense game to start, but a 4 run 4th inning for me proved to be enough to clinch a second-straight playoff appearance and I won 4-2.

        • So after sweating out an end-of-season playoff race, what was my reward for making the playoffs? A matchup against the deadliest team I think I've ever seen a franchise mode produce: the 118 win Detroit Tigers! Not only did they win 118 games, their rotation featured 4 20-game winners, the reigning AL Cy Young winner in Justin Verlander (20-4, 1.87 ERA), and the reigning AL MVP in Prince Fielder (.332/69 HRs/191 RBI). I was hoping to get a chance at revenge against the Tigers, but man....

        • Miraculously, I somehow steal Game 1 5-4. Game 2 doesn't go so well, as the Tigers destroy Brandon Morrow and win 8-3. The swing game of the series, Game 3, goes my way as well and somehow I have the Tigers on the brink of elimination again. Of course, the entirety of Game 4 has me constantly thinking back to last year. Despite that, I manage to hold on to a 2-1 lead and eliminate the 118-win Tigers, getting my revenge and eliminating one of the best regular season teams ever, as I make my second consecutive ALCS.

        • In the ALCS, I'm matched up with the Yankees and take Game 1 1-0 in New York. Game 2 doesn't go so well and the Yankees tie the series at 1. They then carry that momentum the rest of the series and sweep all 3 games in Toronto, 2 of which had the Jays failing to hold on to a lead and losing by 1 run.

        • In the World Series, the Marlins beat out the Yankees in 7 games.

        • Now going into the off-season, I have a ton of big decisions to make. I have the likes of David Price, Adam Lind, Sergio Santos, Colby Rasmus, Yunel Escobar, Antonio Bastardo and Jason Frasor all looking to be re-signed. Luckily last year my budget was increased 3%, and this year it was increased by 4%, so I have some more flexibility. I'm just not sure if I should try and re-sign everyone or let some guys go to make room for some of my young up-and-comers.
This is an awesome read, Blue. I can't wait to see what you do with your team, and how they compete next year.

          Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

Please forgive the length of this progress update—actually, it’s more of a season wrap up. The folks at work won't be interested, and clearly my wife couldn't care less about what kept me up so late on Thursday night, occasionally cursing and yelling at the TV. So, I was hoping some of you would care to share in the experience. I'm sure this written account won't convey the same tension that I felt Thursday night as my season concluded, but it is a bit cathartic for me.

To set the tone, let me say that I'm one of those play-all-162-games-every-pitch-every-at-bat kind of guys. In '11, I first played a full season with the White Sox, and lost game 7 of the World Series to the Rockies when they pulled off a suicide squeeze in the 9th inning. Exciting finish, but terribly deflating after all the hours put in. I put the game aside for several months, and figured I would start a season with the Rockies when '12 came out. Well, in late January or early Feb, I got restless waiting, and popped '11 in back in and started a season. By the time I purchased '12 I was well into June, and decided to finish out the season before starting anything with '12. So, what follows is a breakdown of how my final The Show ’11 season came to an end on Friday morning at 1:20 am.

For most of the season, I was in a tight race with the Giants to win the NL West and we bounced each other out of first on a regular basis. Even though we were both doing well, at the same time we were beating up on each to the extent that whoever was in second wasn’t exactly claiming ownership of the wild card berth. The Brewers who were trailing the Cards in the Central were always on our heels for the wild card. Somewhere along the way, the Giants’ rotation got screwed up, I'm assuming due to injuries (Lincecum and at least one other starter was coming out of their bullpen), and by the time we faced each other in September, they were no longer in the hunt. I cruised into the playoffs with a 12 game cushion.

First pitch of the NLDS, Jimmy Rollins takes one deep out of Coors Field. Before I know it, I’m down 4-1, with the Phillies getting production everywhere—even Halladay got into the act with a 2 RBI single. And, on the other side, his pitching is shutting me down deep into the game. At that point, I figured I was gonna be in a dogfight for the rest of the series, and I began having visions of another massive post season let down after hundreds of hours of gameplay. Well, you can watch the highlights to see how game 1 turned out.

          <iframe width="640" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9c3Wj_fvDfI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

That comeback was not only a big confidence builder, but considering I ended up dropping game 2 to the Phillies, it prevented me from going down 0-2, with a huge hole out of which to dig. In the end it was a fairly painless series that I won 3-1.

Next, I face the Cards in the NLCS, and Holliday did his best to be a hero on multiple occasions-long balls, RBI doubles in the gap, triples that banged off the outfield wall, but Albert didn't really show up for the series...only a handful of hits, lots of lazy fly balls, and one solo long ball. They put some pressure on me in each game, but I managed to sweep them.

The sweep was a good thing, too, because I needed as much rest as possible. When I set my playoff rosters, I only had one catcher eligible. Jose Morales broke his ankle in early September. He was definitely out for the rest of the season, but with rosters expanded, I didn't see the need to put him on the DL. I go to the free agent pool, and pick up Steven Hill--a workable solution for the rest of the season. But, because he wasn't on the active roster on September 1, and it's too late to place Morales on the DL, the game won't let me add him to my roster. My only hope was that the off days would allow Chris Ianetta to stay rested. Fortunately, that worked, the real problem was that in several close games I couldn't pinch run for him because I had no one to replace him behind the plate.

On to face the BoSox for the World Series. They were monsters during the season. I think they finished with .685 (111-51) winning percentage. I didn’t face them in interleague play, so it was going to be a steep learning curve if I wanted to come out on top.

Game 1, Jimenez against Beckett. We put up 4 runs on Beckett in 5th, and one more against Wakefield in relief. Jimenez pitches a 3 hit, 10K complete game gem. Rockies win 5-0.

Game 2, Jason Hammel versus Jon Lester. I get 3 runs early, and never look back. I’m a bit careless with my pitching and allow them to score a few runs, but the game was never close, 8-3. Rockies up 2-0 before we go to Fenway for three games.

I drop Game 3 at Fenway, Clay Buchholz made me look like a minor leaguer. And, their bats finally came to life. Crawford (into the bullpen), Youkilis (over the Green Monster), and Drew (curved a changeup around Pesky's Pole) each homered. I lose 7-3.

Game 4 they throw Beckett at me again, and he shuts me down this time. They win a close one 3-2. Series tied 2-2.

I decided to play Game 5 Thursday nigth and started around 8:45. I have Jimenez starting against Lester, and won this one comfortably, 4-1. Not the widest margin, but after putting up the 1 run, they never really put themselves in a position to score more. I probably should have pulled Jimenez earlier, in case I needed him one more time, but I didn't want to risk it. He was on fire, so I kept him in until the ninth.

At that point, I should have called it a night, and turned off the game on a good note. But, I convince myself, I should go ahead, and seal the deal. I'm going back to Colorado, I bet I can take this next game at home pretty easily.

As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend.” I retired their first three batters, easily. Then, Dexter Fowler hits the second pitch he sees into the right field stands. I’m up 1-0, and begin to believe I’ll be able to take the series. But, then my bats go quiet. They score two runs in the third. John Lackey doubles with one out (seriously). Crawford singles, and moves Lackey to 3rd. Crawford steals, and my throw gets under the second baseman’s glove and into centerfield. Lackey walks home, Crawford to third, still one out. A slow rolling fielder’s choice brings Crawford in. Bottom of the third, Dexter Fowler homers for the second time in the game. Score is tied 2-2. We each score one more run to make it 3-3. Score stays that way until the 7th. Leadoff pinch hitter reaches on a bobbled grounder by Ian Stewart, and the runner beats the throw. I then proceed to throw a pickoff into the stands. Now he’s on 3rd with no outs. Manage to K the next batter, but they get the guy at third in before I work out of it. I do nothing at the plate in 7, 8, or 9. Final score 4-3 BoSox, primarily attributable to 3 Rockies errors.

Now, at this point, I really should go to bed, but I am furious. So, I tell myself I’ll play one or two innings of Game 7…if it just seems like I’m too tired to really be effective, or I’m too tense to play well, I’ll just shut it down and pick it up tomorrow (now today). They throw Buccholz at me again, and I have Aaron Cook on the mound for Game 7.

Well, those one or two innings turned into this...

          <iframe width="640" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hmsTF8UwBLQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I wasn’t sure about that final shot. I waited on the knuckler as I long as I could. When it came off the bat, there was no doubt about distance, only if I had waited long enough, or if I got into it too early. Matty V’s commentary removed all doubt, “Move over, Joe Carter, this series is over”

          Here I come ’12.

                Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

Quick update: June 2, 2013 2nd in NL West 28-26

Team's Leading Hitter: Ichiro Suzuki .262
Team's Leading Home Run Hitter: T-Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin 7
Team's Leading Basestealer: Cameron Maybin 11
Team's Leading Pitcher: Casey Kelly 2.06 ERA
Team's Winning Pitcher: Jair Jurrjens 5-2
Team's Leading Strikeout Pitcher: Casey Kelly 53
                Team's Leading Reliever: Javier Lopez 1.40 ERA, 19.1 IP, 3 H, 16 K, 7 BB

(I wish there were split stats for players who play on two or more teams in one season)

I made some more trades. The White Sox were rebuilding so I sent them Leonys Martin (acquired a couple of days earlier in a Tim Stauffer trade to Texas that also got me Koji Uehara), Joe Thatcher, Yonder Alonso, and another player for Gavin Floyd, Paul Konerko, Kosuke Fukudome and another prospect. Before that Alonso was my leading hitter, but my team severely lacks power so with Borchering waiting in the minors, I decided a quick fix with Konerko would help out a little bit.

Edit: Here is the exact transaction:

                May 29:
The San Diego Padres trade RHP Tim Stauffer, LHP Joe Thatcher, 1B Yonder Alonso, SS Everth Cabrera, and CF Leonys Martin to the Chicago White Sox for RHP Gavin Floyd, LHP Scott Snodgress, RHP Craig Romak, 1B Paul Konerko, and RF Kosuke Fukudome.

                May 19:
The San Diego Padres acquired RHP Koji Uehara, SS Tyler Greene, and CF Leonys Martin from the Texas Rangers for RHP Tim Stauffer, LF Johnny Damon, and LF Jaff Decker.

Update on my Yankees franchise. Currently on June 18th and the Yankees are rolling. We just swept the Braves and then we went ahead and swept the Nationals and are currently on a 6 game winning streak.

Here are some highlights from my franchise:

                    Good game against the Braves:

                      Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

After what seemed like an age but was really about a week and a half of me (DBacks) and the Rockies matching each other stride for stride, I finally have sole possession of the top of the NL West. I took on the Dodgers at Chase field, sending Trevor Cahill to the mound against Ted Lilly. The dodgers struck first in the top of the fourth, when Dee Gordon's RBI single scored Ethier from second. I struck back in the bottom of the fifth, with Justin Upton hitting a leadoff single before stealing second. After Montero and Roberts struck out, up stepped Paul Goldscmidt, with a .172 average, 0 HR and 2 RBI on the year. Having walked earlier, he was looking to have more good at-bats in an attempt to break out of his slump. On a 0-1 count, Lilly threw a slider that hung over the plate, and Goldy crushed it into left field, falling just short of Friday's sports bar.

That was all the offense I could muster but Cahill continued to shut the Dodgers down, before Hernandez threw a perfect 8th. So, 9th inning. JJ Putz in, looking for his 17th save of the year. First pitch of the inning, and Hairston lined a double into right field. After striking out the next two batters, Matt Kemp walked up, 0-8 in the series with 3 K's. After working a 2-2 count, he hit a shallow single to left field. Hairston was waved round, and Gerardo Parra charged the ball and launched a missile towards home plate, but slightly off line, but Miguel Montero jumped high to his right to grab the ball, before diving towards home plate just in time to apply the tag and get the win. After catching my breath, I see that Anibal Sanchez threw a

                        May 31st Notes
The Mariners struggled in May, going just 10-19. They lost five straight series to end the month, including 6 games in a row at one point. While they've accumulated a number of XBH's, they have struggled to get men on base consistently. The pitching has struggled (particularly with HR's and K's), while the defense has been less than spectacular.

Ichiro slowed a bit after his fairly hot start, while Seager saw a fairly significant correction to his offensive numbers. Gutierrez has struggled to keep his average over .200, while Ryan has been a bit of a black hole in the lineup. Figgins bounced back quite a bit from a rough March, and Montero has hit for good power even if his batting average has stayed pretty low. Ackley and Smoak have been consistent contributors in the middle of the lineup, while Carp and the newly acquired Stewart are both chipping in a bit.

King Felix hasn't really been his usual dominating self in May, even though his peripherals still look quite solid. Millwood continues his resurgence, he's been the second-most consistent pitcher in the rotation. Vargas has been a little up-and-down and neither Noesi nor Iwakuma have yet proven they can be relied on (although Noesi did lower his ERA by over 3). For the most part, the bullpen has been quite solid (Heilman is the noticeable exception and his days with the club are most likely numbered). League has done a better job of closing out games, while Sherrill, Luetge, Samardzija, and Wilhelmsen have been quite reliable in the 7th and 8th innings. Marquez may let up a few too many HR's and may not strike out many hitters, but he's been an asset in long relief.

                        Injuries
SS Carlos Triunfel on 15-day DL with Dislocated Shoulder, out another 3-4 weeks.
C Guillermo Quiroz on 60-day DL with Torn Calf, will be out another 1-2 months.
3B Francisco Martinez on 60-day DL with Fractured Foot, out another 1-2 months.

                        Trades
5/25 - Traded C Miguel Olivo and RF Johermyn Chavez (C Potential) to Milwaukee for CF Carlos Gomez. Olivo was struggling offensively, but the Brewers were quite insistent that they wanted the veteran catcher. Chavez was hitting decently in AAA. Gomez will help balance out the Mariners' lefty-heavy lineup (he has nice pop vs. LH pitchers), plus he brings a lot of speed.

                        Around the League
DET trades SP Jacob Turner and 3B Nick Castellanos to CIN for SP Aroldis Chapman and RP Sam Le Cure.

Tigers - SP Aroldis Chapman on 15-day DL with Shoulder Tear, will be out another 1-2 months (that trade really backfired for Detroit).

I thought i contribute to this great thread.

I am currently 34-22 with the Indians. I'm only playing division games as of now. Of course, as the season goes on any playoff implication games, if I'm in the hunt, I will be playing.

Casey Kotchman and Asdrubal Cabrera have been my two best players thus far, although Travis Hafner leads the team in homers with 12.

Ubaldo Jimenez has been my best pitcher with a 7-2 record.

I'll try to post stats later.

Having lots of fun with this team. I like the fact that the Indians have lots of speed so I'm not forced to go for the homerun.

Have fun with Jimenez. After playing a season of 11 with him on the Rockies squad I can tell you he is an fun guy to have, but man he can make it interesting from time to time. Depending on whose rosters you are using, he may have different attributes, but I always looked forward to those games he was on the mound--but by the time he threw his first pitch I could always tell if it was going to be a fun game or a frustrating game. His stuff could be dominating, but sometimes I just couldn't control where it was going--never really was able to get much use out of his 12-6 curve, it had such an extreme break on it.

                                Re: 2012 Franchise Progress Thread

Started a Mets franchise about a week or so ago..

Somehow JBay is my best hitter w/ a .424 3hr 9rbi season so far in 8 games.

                                Record: 5-3 (1-2 vs. Braves) ( 3-0 vs Nats) (1-1 Phillies)

                                1st - Braves 6-2
                                2nd - Phillies 5-3
                                3rd - Mets 5-3
                                4th - Nationals 3-4
                                5th - Marlins 2-6

                                Wright is also doing good w/ a .386 1hr 8rbi 3sb in 8 games.

.. this is my first time i've gotten some accurate stats across the board as i finally found my perfect level of play and how to hit.

Johan & R.a are duplicating success so far like in real life being my 1a & 1b aces.

The bullpen is also realistic unfortunately. Parnell 6+ era. Francisco 2/3 saves with a 8+ era ( last game he blew a 7-3 lead and gave up 2 hr's to lose in walk off fashion.. after Duda hit a pinch hit 3run hr off of Pap to tie it in the top9. I scored 4 after, but Frankie couldnt save it.)

As far as minors... Wheeler, Harvey, Familia, Meijia will all be in double-A.

If the back end of rotation is faultering later in season I'd think of bringing up Harvey/Wheeler for 5th spot...
& Familia and Meijia will most likely be called up at some point if bullpen struggles.. But who knows only been 8 games

Goodluck with all your Franchises. I'll update rarely, but its nice to read all yours every so often.
