You know, we could actually use the space where the ant are marching for next years iteration of the Pulse Pitching.

Choose the pitch
Press and hold the X button
The quicker you release the X button, the less effort for that pitch
The longer you hold it, the greater the effort.
The Ants Marching ring would start green, go to yellow, and then to red to designate how much oomph you put on the pitch.

So, with one button, you get your pulse, and your pitch speed, dependent on how long you keep it pressed.

Okay. Our ideas are almost identical. Here's where I'm coming from on mine compared to yours:

Your idea is for an X press before the Pulse begins. However, you need to remember pitch selection. My idea accomplishes the same thing, but shortens the steps in order to execute it. You know, determining effort while using the pitch selection button (meaning...X, O, [], ^, and R1 all can determine effort at the same exact time as you selecting your pitch).

Then, the Pulse would begin.

I'm hesitant to jump on board with your next idea (the lights around the Pulse) because (A) It would be unnecessary because effort was already determined and (B) OS would implode with hate threads.

And I sort of like this site.

Actually, you are right, but I just figured it out.

You choose the pitch, then map the buttons for the effort.
Use Circle for less effort ala get-me-over pitch
Use the X for normal
Use the Square for max effort.

Easy to map, and easy to coordinate the pitcher stamina for over-using the Square
Make the Square effort a tougher circle to master, as with greater effort comes less accuracy

Matches up with the hitting based on contact, normal and power.

There you go.

Actually that was my old idea. I got rid of the lights, and any extra on-screen stuff.^^^^

Just choose your pitch, then use the buttons that you choose for hitting power to start the pulse.

I really don't think you need OSD's or anything - simply press and hold the X button once you've selected your pitch - longer hold equals more effort. Simple and all on one button.

Maintains the simplicity of the mode while giving the user varying degrees of control over effort, not just three. Keep it hidden like classic.

But, you don't think it would just be easier to piggyback effort and pitch selection together with one button press?

There has to be some sort of feedback to let you know how much effort you gave. Be it vibration, or by choosing the button that determines it.

Imagine the boards when you don't know if you pressed the button long enough, too long, etc...

Remember the hotbed of discussion over Classic pitching. 14 different guys knew how it worked... and no one actually did.

By choosing the corresponding button for effort, no extra presses, no clutter on screen, and no doubt as to what you meant to do.

I do not use pulse pitching. I find it too distracting. At the very least for me to give it more of a try for offline purposes the pulse icon would need to not have a rotation going in circles.

But when would we do this?

We already use the 5 face buttons twice to pitch. The first being pitch selection and the second being X to pitch the ball. During the second press, we're already tied up timing the Pulse.

Wouldn't it make more sense to determine effort at the SAME time as the the first step (pitch selection)?

*EDIT* Pared, I re-read your post. I now understand where we would determine effort from your post. But it adds a third step. Do you want to have to ban people for complaining that 3 steps is too much? LOL!

This sounds pretty good.

Only problem I see, is you know your accuracy before your effort. Then you can back off on effort before the pitch is released in case you messed up on accuracy.

Where an MLB pitcher does not know his accuracy before the effort. Where as selecting effort before hand would help play into the authenticity a bit more. Only problem with that is it takes away from a one button (all in one motion) simplicity and splits that up into two.

However you are already doing two to select the pitch already as well.

The speed of the pitch will be your feedback. You know, pretty much just like real baseball - you put more or less (long or short) effort then only know how "hard" you threw by MPH when you're clocked.

But alas I am not getting into a back and forth with you. Just my take.

Well as it works now, if you choose to throw a Curveball that your pitcher has mapped to his Square button, you still choose the pitch with Square, then Pulse Pitch with the X button.

So, my idea was that you already choose the pitch, (square) now you start your Pulse Pitching motion with the three mapped buttoms for effort, which just happen to be the same effort buttons for hitting.

Same number of presses, and no issues with what happened versus what you wanted to happen.

***edit*** and this also takes care of "cheating" by backing off effort when you knew you missed your spot. This way, the Pulse would be and slower and easier spot to hit with the Circle button, as the pitch is an easier effort, and easier to control. Conversely, the Square button would be a tougher Pulse, as with more effort, you are going to sacrifice your accuracy, and so on..

Yeah, not trying to get into a back and forth, just batting ideas around.

You already do three steps now - if you consider a press and release 2 and 3. The release just comes later for more effort if you would like. You can build up while your pitcher is in the windup/stretch and let go before the ball release.

Too much effort = greater inaccuracy. Plus you maintain user interaction as opposed to just button presses and letting the cpu decide everything. You have the balance most want.

Because it undermines their entire pitching system.

Right now, every method is select pitch, then select everything else.
