Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
This is my first year with the game - and I'd like to say I'm getting the hang of it Zone hitting on all star. Here are a few things I am doing..
1. I did not touch sliders for hitting.
2. I did move pitch speed down 1 click.
3. I look for a fast ball early in count.
4. Anything off speed or below my PCI i lay off.
5. I leave my PCI a bit lower than default, I feel that's a good spot for me to react.
6. I move my pci a bit before the pitch to "warm my finger up to move."
7. I know the pitcher, and I know the count.
8. I guess fast ball in 2-1, 3-1, 3-0, and 0-0
9. If a pitcher has a mean change up, then i guess fast ball and assume change up if the ball is thrown high. in one of the counts i mentioned.
10. I swing normal only. ( i've had 3 home run games with one player a few times, and I average 2-3 homeruns per game)
11. Swing with O on players with smaller PCI's (on the tigers: Austin Jackson, inge, Rayburn on his weak side)
12. 2 strikes with players who don't have great contact swing with O.
13. if a pitcher throws mostly 1st pitch fast ball the first go-a-round he wont next time.
14. Side arm pitchers, stay off the junk. They throw mostly balls, and will need to catch up later in the count.PSN: The_TechNinja

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Here's a link that really helped me up my RTTS batting avg...
It's a mental approach that involves gradual mental expansion of the strike zone according to the number of strikes in the count. Good stuff...Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Well I tried a new approach that seemed to work last game. Just take pitches till you get 2 strikes on you and then try to fight pitches off and hope you get a lucky hit every now and then. Then once the starter gets tired in the middle innings they'll make more mistakes (especially with the off-speed stuff) and you can start hitting and getting runs. Won my last game 7-2 and scored 2 runs in the 6th and 4 in the 7th.
I remember one of the developers saying, the more a CPU batter sees a pitch, the greater chance of him mashing it (especially later in the game). Well... That's probably what is happening when you take more pitches in general. Your players start to lock in and their chances of driving those same pitches increase the 2nd and 3rd time through the line-up.
I've used a modified approach from AUTiger and really have started to be more patient the first time though the line-up and increasing my aggressiveness each time the lineup turn's over. I made some guidelines and it's really worked for me (using good teams and bad teams).

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Some of this stuff may be recycled, but I would like to give my input on things that have helped me become a better hitter on The Show.
First off, I would like to say that I do play on Rookie with Zone Hitting. All my sliders are at the default and I very rarely (if ever) use the swing influence or the left stick when batting. I almost never use the power swing as well.
Here are some tips that have helped me become a better hitter in both season/franchise mode and RTTS:
- Pay attention to the pitch speeds: In RTTS, you can see the pitcher's repertoire and their pitch speeds prior to going up to bat. In franchise mode, you can press select prior to any pitch and hold the square button to view pitch speeds. There is a vast difference between an 85 MPH fastball and a 97 MPH fastball in this game. It's good to pay attention.
- I know it's been said a million times on here, but be patient. Patience is very key and it will help you get better pitches to hit.
- Expect a fastball and adjust to the off-speed pitches: In real life, baseball players are always thinking fastball and adjust to the off-speed stuff. They are taught to sit back on breaking pitches, which is a great tool in The Show. If you are always thinking fastball, then you should never be late on a fastball. Also, if you can recognize the breaking pitches you should be able to wait back and collect a hit.
- Hit the pitches wherever they are thrown: I especially like this tip, because I feel that it is ultra-realistic. If a pitch is thrown outside, try to take it to the opposite field. If it's thrown inside, try to pull it by swinging a bit earlier then you normally would. If a ball is thrown in the middle of the plate, try hitting it back up the middle. On hit and run situations, try influencing your swing down and taking the pitch to the voided hole (at shortstop or second base). On sac fly situations, try influencing your swing up to get that fly ball and get the runner in.
- Don't be too aggressive when you're down in the count: Most often times, when you are down 0-2 or 1-2, the pitcher will try to get you to chase bad pitches. If it's close, use the 'O' button and try fouling it off to stay alive. I have struck out just 9 times in over 350 at-bats in my RTTS season by using this approach.
- Double play dilemma: I used to ground into double plays almost every time when there was a runner on first. I never changed my timing because it used to work before, but I realized what's important when there is a double play situation. The defenders will be at 'double play depth', which means they are playing closer to second then they normally would and they are playing in a little bit. Instead of keeping your usual timing, try swinging earlier than normal if you are intending to pull or swinging later than normal if you are intending to go to the opposite field. There is a lot of room on both sides of the infield, so there is a good chance to get a hit here, especially if you influence your swing down prior to the at-bat to put the ball on the ground.
These are just a few tips that have helped me to get a little better in MLB 12 The Show. I hope they help some of you guys as well.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
I don't know if its me or not but it seems like the computer can read the movement of my controller somehow. When I move back while the computer is on the mound and move forward when he starts to throw I can hit better. But when I stay in one spot with the controller in the same spot I do alot worse.
The thing that seems to work most on this game is patience waiting until 2 strikes most of the time before swinging. I scored 12 runs yesterday that way.Last edited by mcseven; 06-14-2012, 01:26 PM.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Good question. I have a Samsung 56" DLP HDTV and it doesn't have a game mode, so I figured I wasn't being affected by lag. I do have the choice of selecting "dynamic", "movie", or "standard" picture type. Like I stated, I didn't think that was affecting anything. In my mind, the different options only affect the color display/settings.
Hit the menu button on your TV remote. Go to your "Setup" menu.
Scroll down until you get to "entertainment".
Then, scroll down to "Game". The options are: Off, Sports, Cinema, Game.
I just read this thread and got pretty stoked because I have been having serious lag issues with this game. Never in a million years would I think that the problem could be my picture settings on my TV.
It still doesnt make sense to me but I'm going to try it. I just now switched my entertainment mode to "game", im on a 61 inch Samsung, and I'm about to hop in a game and see if it makes a difference.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
I wanted to bring back up the approach that AUTiger1 had a while back... I've learned this approach works. Maybe taking pitches till 2 strikes is a little extreme, but it seems to really help your players in the long run.

If anybody is interested I'll post them here.
I would be interested in reading. Thanks.Comment

GMO’s Guide to Getting Into Good Hitters Counts, Drawing Walks, and Winning In Pitchers Counts(The Show 12)
Early in the Count
1. First time through the lineup take the first three pitches
2. Second time through take the first strike
3. Third time through use “the reliever approach”(Refer to #6)
4. With runners in scoring position against a pitcher who is struggling use “the reliever approach”
5. With bad relievers take the first strike (really bad ones, take the first three pitches)
6. Use “the reliever approach”. Used when facing a good reliever’s swing at the first good pitch you see. If you swing and miss the first one, then take the second
7. First time though the lineup, mix in a first pitch swing (if it’s a bad ball, save it for another batter)
8. Second time though the lineup, mix in 2 first pitch swings (bad ball, same as above)
Hitters Counts
1. After following your early count process if you are in a hitters count. Visualize your pitch and location and only swing if you get it
2. Can also take the approach of taking unless it’s just a fat pitch you can’t lay of (Feeling of “I can’t help myself”)
2 Strike and Neutral Counts
1. Let the ball travel deep in the zone because I’m not swinging unless he forces me to (think about laying his chase pitches, even if its close to the black)Madden Breakdowns Full YOUTUBE Playlist

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
I've been playing the show since 06, and I love it. It's easily the best game out there. I've never really had a problem with anything until this year. I couldn't get too many hits, maybe around 5 a game on timing. I also was using classic 1/4 for guess pitch, which I've done every year. After struggling and reading this thread, I decided to switch things up and after two games, they have paid dividends. Here's what I have done: First, I took off guess pitch. I think it's better to read and react without it helps you hit better. Second I changed from timing to analog plus zone, although I don't use the yellow thing in the strike zone, so basically it acts just like analog hitting. With this approach, I noticed as many others when I stride earlier, I hit with more solid contact and power. Lastly I decided to work the count, especially early in the game. Even when you get to two strikes, it seems on Veteran the pitchers rarely throw three in a row in the zone, and working the count definitely helps. I appreciate all the help everyone gave on here, it definitely helped me!!Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Wait on pitches. If you are early on a fastball, that is bad. You must wait to see if the pitch is going to move out of the strike zone. Be patient at the plate. Use the left analog stick to aim where you hit the ball. If the count is two balls and no strikies or three balls and one strike, don't swing at the ball unless it is in your sweet spot. Push the left analog stick forward extra fast for more power. If you have a runner on third with one out, do a hit and run but bunt instead of swinging. I hope that helped. I bunt a lot.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Which hitting option is most rating dependent?
I use pure analog,
when I hit, I hold r2 and influence the direction of the wing with the right stick or left stick?
I struggle massively with pitch identification?
Any practical tips?
I look for the floating but sometimes its too late.Comment

Timing, unquestionably. The only thing you control is your own timing of the swing, and the rest is controlled by the players' ratings. That means that just because your swing timing is perfect doesn't mean you'll always get a solid hit (or even make contact), because the AI and player ratings control the PCI.

Practice is the most important thing IMO...try playing the "pitch recognition" batting practice game - the goal is to only swing at fastballs thrown to a certain part of the strike zone. You're supposed to try and lay off all breaking balls and changeups for this game, even if they're strikes.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips
Sometimes when i bat in rtts i will have perfect timing but it will say that i missed the ball or say i swung under or over the ball so i foul it off or completely miss it so my question is what attribute do i need to upgrade to help me not miss the ball?Comment
