Re: Loooooooong Singles.
I was checking out this video on The Escaptist (my favorite video game site) and in this video, there are 2 times within 20 seconds that a sure double down the line becomes a single because the OFs are too fast and the arm strength is too strong on default. It's pretty obvious to me that default sliders don't play that good a game of baseball.

IMO, the first one is user error as he didn't run all the way through (watch for the hitch after he gets to first). After that, he presses the advance button and it's too late - he knows he doesn't have a chance. In addition, the throw in from left was offline, as most throws from the deep OF are - 2B can't just catch and tag. I think he's in safely if he runs it all the way through, even though Uggla's not the fastest player in the world (55 speed). At the very least it's a close play when the 2B moves to tag.
I'll give you the 2nd one, with the caveat that it's Brian McCann (and his blazing 34 catcher speed) running. He still probably should have been able to make it regardless - that was a pretty standard double into the alley.Last edited by bcruise; 04-08-2012, 04:17 AM.Comment

Here's a double from yesterday's Cubs game, notice the big difference from real baseball and The Show with default sliders.

I like when I hit the ball to the outfield the second basemen has the ball from the RF long before my guy is at first base.Comment

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
The Physics in this game need A LOT of work. They are pretty terrible at the moment. Sorry, but there are way too many ground rule doubles, balls bouncing 25 feet off the ground off of GRASS??? what? Also looooonnggggg singles as this thread suggests. Amongst many other examples that are out there pertaining to the physics in this game.Comment

On one hand I'd like to see it toned down in the upcoming patch (ground rule doubles, too high bounce, too much slowdown on grounders, etc.), but on the other hand I wonder what that would do to the current game balance, which isn't optimal but not so terrible as some make it to be.Comment

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
If they used physics they should be able to change the bouncing off the walls with changing one single constant in an equation.
I think that constant may be too high, and it looks like (keep in mind I don't attend lots of baseball games) that the ball travels incredibly fast.Last edited by pistolpete; 04-08-2012, 11:32 AM.Comment

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
Watching my video 9 seconds elapsed between the time my ball left Kornerko's bat until he was tagged out.
Assuming Kornerko's path around the bases is circular the distance he runs in that 9 seconds is 120*pi*.5 = 188ft ---> 20.9 ft/sec ---> 14.3 MPH.
That estimate will be a little high, because the path isn't circular, but I do think the running speed is pretty accurate.
The ball then took 4 seconds to travel 377 ft. That speed is 64 MPH. I think that's also pretty accurate. The ball probably came off the bat much faster, but we're talking average speed. This seems realistic to me.
Josh Hamilton then while hitting the cut off man gets the ball back into the infield in 5 seconds. Assuming it takes him 1 second to pick up the ball (prob a modest assumption) and it takes the relay 1 second to relay to second (another modest assumption) that means the ball travels about 200 ft in 3 seconds. I don't feel like doing the math on this one, but you can see this is actually going to be a little on the slow side.
My conclusion is that ball bounces off the wall too much and OFs field it too cleanly. In real life Josh Hamilton probably has to run an additional 5-10 ft to pick up a ball sitting at or near the base of the wall and it takes him an additional second to get the ball out of his hand and get it towards the infield.
With that said, I have changed my mind and this issue does not occur nearly as often (to me at least) as first suspected.Comment

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
It's obvious watching a real game of baseball that there are quite a few issues with the game on default sliders.

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
So I saw this (and it hurt, as I'm a Yankees fan) and thought about how in MLB The Show 12, Zobrist would be sliding into 2B just barely making it even with the best sliders available on these forums.
(it's play . j s p? without spaces where the link is broken, or just go to MLB.com and search for Ben Zobrist and see his triple)Comment

Rather than copy and pasting the link (which tends to get parsed incorrectly in OS), you can "embed" movie by copy and pasting the IFRAME embed code (which you can find under those SNS icons right below each movie):
<iframe src='http://mlb.mlb.com/shared/video/embed/embed.html?content_id=20406305&width=400&height=22 4&property=mlb' width='400' height='224' frameborder='0'>Your browser does not support iframes.</iframe>
In order to do this properly, you need to "switch the editor mode" by clicking the icon on the upper right corner of the message editor before pasting the code into your post.Last edited by nomo17k; 04-08-2012, 08:08 PM.Comment

And yeah, there's the video. In MLB The Show 12, that simply does not happen.Comment

Re: Loooooooong Singles.
From how the video looks like, it does seem fielders run much slower in real life than in the game.Comment
