What happens if you go over your budget? Is this like a hard monetary allowance or does it allow for you go to negative? And what happens if you spend below your payroll for a few years... does that money rollover?

There was a hard cap for awhile for human controlled teams. We asked for us(human control) to be allowed to go over when signing renewable and arbitration players(Not Free Agents). They were working on that as we left. The CPU could go over to resign so it was only fair.

The money does not roll over.

Edit: They also added text on the contract screen in the off season, budget available and contracts out. So if you had 30 million available and had 46 million out in contracts you would have a visual clue. The franchise blog had old footage so you couldn't see that. It's a nice subtle touch to keep you in the black.

Unspent payroll is left available for mid season upgrades, like taking on salary for trades. If I have 10 million available I can trade prospects for a player making 10 million and fit within my budget. If I am over budget I will not be able to take on additional salary in a trade.

The upgrades, maintenance etc... is out this year. They are planning on incorporating it so it actually does something. The way ticket prices, concessions, maintenance etc. have been in the past was purely cosmetic.

Oh so payroll is the only financial aspect of the entire mode? I understand why budgets don't rollover now, that makes a lot more sense.

There salaries to start are similar to what they were last year. It's when players are free agents, I would like to see the Elite Free Agent players get the 15million plus deal. When we were there some of the elite players were getting like 5-7million. Just didn't seem to be enough separation between the elite and the B and C guys, but like I said the Devs acknowledged they heard are concerns and would look into it so I'll have to see the final version to pass complete judgement. In the future years there were guys making 19mil a season so there will be those big deals...

Thanks tabarnes19, great write up as well! Hopefully it can be tweaked a bit for the free agents, but nice to see that you saw a big contract like that. Hopefully it isn't too rare for the big name FA's each year.
