Fair enough, I'd alternate them based on energy with a slight Laroche bias, as both are plus defensively

Re: 2013 The Show Official Trade Discussion Thread

Hey Guys, so once the rosters come out I will start my Yankees franchise. Now, I like to run my franchise as if I was running the actual team. In other words, I make decisions based on what I would do and not what the real life organization would/will do. With that said if I'm running the Yankees there's no way I'm giving Cano the 8-10 yrs he wants on his next deal as those kinds of contacts have them where they are now IMO. So I would at the least shop him near the break. My question is where should I be looking and who exactly should I be looking at in a deal for Cano that would be somewhat realistic if NY did decide to deal him?

I would say that the top 5 trade targets that are realistic but would take a lot to get are Stanton, Tulo, CarGo, Nolasco and if the Yankees fall out and he doesn't sign Cano by deadline. If he goes FA, Cano will be a Dodger, you can bank on it

I was thinking more along the line of prospects from either a team that would be in "win now" mode or could potentially sign him long term? Although the Yankees trading a superstar for prospects is probably not the most realistic move it would be what I would do if I were them considering their age and lack of ML ready prospects. I also believe he will go to LA if he hits FA which is why I want to deal him before the deadline.

I'm the Rays now and I'm wondering if shopping Evan Longoria around is realistic... he's batting only .131 and can't deal with this anymore lol

Unrealistic, he just signed an extension.

Just had the best MLB baseball game I've ever played... Such a good game and ironically Longoria is the one who put me up by 2 in the 8th after he hit a SHOT to left... Great win against the Yankees

Realistically, it's unlikely Cano is dealt this year. The only way that changes of course is if for whatever reason the Yanks are out of it by summer.

                    But, it's your franchise.

Because Cano would be asking for a boatload of money and years in free agency, you're gunning for a trade partner which fits either of these scenarios...

                    1. A team with a large payroll committment and willing to spend in order to compete.

                    2. A team with a modest payroll who sees an opportunity to make it to the the World Series in 2013, but is willing to let Cano walk (not wanting to give him the big deal).

What's tough here is that if Cano is dealt in-season, that team won't be able to receive a compensatory draft pick in the offseason (new to the CBA). Plus, teams know Cano will reach FA as a Boras client.

Also, that hurts the type of package the Yankees would be able to get in return.

You're not getting any elite prospects IMO (you can point to the Giants/Mets Beltran/Wheeler trade to point out the opposite, to be honest) -- but for example a Rendon/Espinosa for Cano type trade just seems too far fetched....unless the Nats happen to want to make that WS push in your franchise.

He is just going through a slump. This may have been the game where he gets out of it. Be patient though. Good luck!

I don't think any of those choices fall into the realm of realism. All 3 players are key cogs on their teams, who are contending, and none easily replaced, especially since you are taking an OF and likely creating a need there for them. (of course, your chise, your rules ).

At that level of talent (presumably you are looking for a OFer than can do 30/100), I'd look at Jason Kubel in AZ or Alfonso Soriano (CHC).

Jose Tabata (PIT), Colby Rasmus (TOR), Matt Joyce (TB), and J.D. Martinez (HOU) would be good for the low end of that range, if you are just looking for a fill-in/4th OF later.

If you want to go big, depending on what you want to give up, Giancarlo Stanton (MIA) might be an option, though it should be illegal to have Harper and Stanton in the same OF . But for Stanton, you'd want to look at offering Rendon/Giolito/Tyler Moore/Cole/Leon as a starting point.

One thing to consider is, would you being going young? Or trading superstar for superstar?

If you go young, the only team ballsy and rich enough to take Cano this close to his contract extension would probably be the Dodgers. Problem with that is, assuming Yasiel Puig is off-limits, what do you get back? Dee Gordon + Zach Lee + Chris Reed + Corey Seager might get it done (could spin some of those prospects to MIA in a 3-team deal for Stanton also, possibly), but there aren't many options for different prospect packages after LAD's farm system was thinned out in that Red Sox trade last year. However, given the enormous pressure to win on LAD right now, they might be willing to completely empty the farm to get that one last player...though they probably are 2-3 players away from WS contention imo.

One thing to consider though if trading for prospects...you do realize it's the Yankees, right? Let's just say the fans might not be too receptive.

Thanks for your input. I agree they will keep him and ultimately he will end up naming his price in FA. I love Cano but not for the deal he wants and will get so I will probably deal him despite it being unrealistic and just try my best to find the most "realistic" trade if say the Yankees tanked do to injuries and the division being as strong as it is, and put him on the market. What sucks is that as you said, no way their getting top prospects/young stars so I will no doubt have to take back A LOT less than he is worth
