Actually, there are some stats that can be used quite well for calculating defensive attributes. There's something called Outfield Arm Runs Above Average that is based not only on throwing runners out, but on keeping runners from advancing. I think it's good judge of how good an outfielders arm is. For sure, there's a lot of intangibles in baseball, especially when it comes to defense, but to just blanket it as impossible isn't the answer. There's been a lot of good thoughts in recent years on how to chart things like this....no harm in trying right?

Besides, you need to try something to help rate the thousands of players available that not even Knight can put ratings to. I mean, it's not hard to rate Roberto Clemente's arm, but how about someone like a Carl Furillo?

      Re: Knight - classic teams

Ok, take that defensive stat you mentioned right there, if it's also based on keeping runners from advancing, then how would you know if he should of made it to that base anyway ? Mabye that baserunner wasn't aggresive enough, or the ball wasn't quite far enough for him to get there. There's too much of a judgement call there. With offence things are black and white. And who's determining this ? I hope they're better than some of these official scorers.

I would't call these defensive abilities intangibles. A good example of intangibles would be a player like Derek Jeter. He might not have the talent of some other high profile players, like the big power #'s of an A-rod, or the speed of a Reyes, but he's a winning ballplayer, mabye because he's a smarter player than Reyes, or more clutch than A-rod. These are some of Jeters intangilbes, along with leadership qualitys. Anyways, i dont want to make this into a Jeter/A-rod thing or anything, i was just giving an example of intangilbes.

I def hear you though, especially about some of the more obscure historic players, it's gotta be tough rating their defence attributes if you haven't seen them play. And i do applaud your effort for your work done on these rosters too, so please don't take this as a criticism because it's not at all.

I'm about to dl your file and play some nl action. But i didn't know how everthing was before, stats wise, so i'm not really one to judge, that would have to be Knight.

The stat's pretty accurate. It rates Clemente consistently as a +8 and Johnny Damon as -2 to -8. It's not a judgment call either, it's hard stats based on runners and how they advanced when a ball was hit to an outfielder. Averaged over a whole season, it gives a decent indication of the arm based on an average situation.

I'm taking a break for a couple days...hoping people will give it a look and see if there's anything I missed. I'll get back to it after the weekend and hopefully finish it up next week. It takes roughly an hour to rate a whole team and input it.

You only left that one link a few pages back. I think alot of people could miss it. I'm interested in what Knight has to say about them though.

I'm currently on hold with doing the American League side until I finish my Roster Tools. It takes so long to go in and look up each batter individually and type in his stats. I'll have something that does it automatically, which should be a HUGE time saver.
