Thank you for that extremely helpful post. Obviously it is me, I never said it wasn't. But slider sets are meant to be a starting point for finding the happy medium for each individual person. All I was asking for was some advice on what adjustments to make based on the stats I'm seeing.

But thank you so much for your useful input to the discussion.

This isn't just 8 games of frustration, this is 50+ games of frustration trying many slider sets and having them be so close to perfect but coming up short for me. The game has had the last little ounce of fun sapped out of it for me. But hell, if I've stuck it out this far, what's another 12 games of miserable failure.

I did actually pitch well this last game, giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits and the 2nd run was a BS run because I had a 2-out strikeout but the ump didn't call it and ended up walking the guy and of course the next guy doubled him in. So I don't think I need to change the CPU offense any because I can have games where I pitch well and some where I pitch badly. I'm just still going to lose every game if I can't score any runs.

Oh and I did change pitch speed to 7. On 8 even if I was sitting on a 96mph fastball I was behind it. If I'm fully committed to the fastball and get it, I shouldn't be behind it. I still struck out being behind the fastball a couple more times later in the game, which is fine because I wasn't sitting dead red. I have not made any other changes yet.
I think you should lower the Pitch Speed even further. I have a hunch that this will solve your problem.

I'd go back to 5 and play a few games and report back.

Could it be your tv by any chance? I have always struggled on veteran with hitting in the show since 08. This year I am killing it on all star and thinking of moving up. I have heard some peoples hitting performance get better or worse depending on tv.

It's funny that you bring this up. I play on two different TVs, a 46" in my office and a 67" downstairs in the man cave. On the 67" my hitting is actually much worse if you can believe it. I can't time anything on that TV. I generally time swings pretty well on the 46" upstairs so that's what I've been playing all these games on so far.

On 5 I end up going the other way being way in front of everything. In the few games I've played since moving from 8 to 7 the timing has felt good. I'm behind some, I'm in front of some, and I definitely have more "Good" timing swings. I really want to stay at 7. My strikeouts have already dropped off from 8+ to about 5.5 a game in the 5 games I've played on 7. And I'd much rather be striking out from being late than from being way in front of every offspeed pitch, which is what I run into with it at 5.

            Through 12 games now:
            4-8 record
            .219/.258/.362 (.620 OPS)
            7.00 Hits/game
            1.25 2B/game
            0.17 3B/game
            1.00 HR/game
            2.75 Runs/game
            3.55 ERA

            MLB averages from 2012 were
            .255/.319/.405 (.724 OPS)
            8.66 Hits/game
            1.70 2B/game
            0.19 3B/game
            1.02 HR/game
            4.32 Runs/game
            4.01 ERA

Another interesting stat is that I'm grounding into 1.08 double plays a game compared to the MLB average of 0.74 and the CPU average of 0.25.

So it's really close. I just need a little more offense. Really just a few more hits with RISP would do it. I generally get several opportunities each game just hardly ever cash in. I'm hitting .224 w/RISP, averaging 5.6 AB w/RISP and 1.25 hits w/RISP per game. So a couple more baserunners (my walks are still a little low at 1.17/game, and I generally have at least two full counts a game where I end up fouling off or chasing ball 4 and either striking out or making out, so hopefully I can turn those around) and a couple more clutch hits per game and I'm there. My runs are currently almost exclusively from homers, with the occasional sac fly or ground out with a runner at 3rd mixed in.

Re: TNK - 2013 REALISM SLIDERS

Just over 1 BB per game. That's a big part of your problem.

And I'd gather, with those kind of walk numbers, a few things are happening:

              1. You're putting quality pitches in play too often.
              2. You're chasing too much
              3. You're not getting enough runners in scoring position

And each of these things wil make pitcher confidence and individual pitch confidence explode!!! Which in itself will add to the problem. Big time.

What's your overall swing to total pitch percentage? If I recall correctly, it should realistically only be between 45%-55%. I only swing about 45%-50% of the time.

And what's your strike to ball percentages and how many times per game do you chase?

And what's your strike to ball percentages and how many times per game do you chase?
I swing 50.40% of the time (MLB 5-year average is 45.80%). My chase percentage is 34.48% (MLB avg 28.20%), so yes it is a little high. The CPU pitches in the zone 49.35% of the time, compared to the MLB 5-yr average of 47.30%, so the strike to ball ratio is good. Actual strike % is 66.81%, which is slightly above the MLB average of 62.90% because I chase a little more than real players do. But my zone-swing % is 66.75%, which is pretty close to the 65.10% MLB average.

My BABIP continues to decline at .244 (was .257 after 7 games). The CPU's BABIP was coming back down but only because I played the Pirates. Played one game against the Phillies and their offense exploded for 19 hits and 10 runs and a BABIP of .459. Everything they hit found a hole somewhere, with 8 of those 19 hits being for extra bases. Through 13 games the CPU BABIP stands at .317 and my ERA is back up over 4 (Homer Bailey being the primary culprit with an 8.40 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 3 starts). The next two game against the Phillies I'm sure are going to be extremely painful, but at least I get two series against Miami and Chicago to lull me into a false sense of getting better before I get destroyed by the Nats and Cards again.

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE

Game #20 of the Season – Oakland A's @ Boston Red Sox

Pitching Matchup – Bartolo Colon vs. John Lackey

The Red Sox and A's kick off a 3 game series at Fenway Park. The A's send Bartolo Colo to the mound against John Lackey for Boston.

                  * Bit of a rough start for John lackey who labored through 5+ innings on the mound and left the game with the Red Sox trailing 4-2 in the 6th inning.

                  * Bartolo Colon was not particularly sharp despite pounding the strike zone all night and he was the beneficiary of some good defense behind him as the A's turned 3 double plays in the 1st 5 innings.

                  * The Red Sox trailed 6-4 with runners on the corners and 1 out in the bottom of the 8th but Jesse Chavez got Ellsbury to bounce into a 4-6-3 inning ending double play

                  * Oakland closer Grant Balfour entered the game with a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 9th and recorded the 1st two outs as Boston was down to their final out. David Ortiz struck out swinging for what should have been the 3rd out but the ball bounced away from Jaso allowing Ortiz to reach and keep the game alive. Jonny Gomes came up next representing the tying run and he would fly out to Reddick in RF for the final out.

The A's come in to Fenway and take Game #1 of the series with a 6-4 victory. Both teams left quite a few runners on base in this one.

The Red Sox will look to get back on track tomorrow as they send their ace Jon Lester to the mound in game 2 of the series against Brett Anderson.

Re: TNK - 2013 REALISM SLIDERS

^^ I'd love to get 14 hits in a game. I've only managed double digits twice in 15 games. The CPU, however, gets double digit hits more often than not.

I tried to make it to 20 games, I really tried, but I can't do it. I'm 4-11 after 15 games and I'm at the end of my rope. This last game I actually managed 4 runs and 11 hits, including a couple solid singles with a runner at 2nd in the 7th inning, an extremely extremely rare occurrence, only to have both of them cut down at the plate by perfect throws from the right fielder who has an average arm. Both runners have above average speed and both rounded perfectly (also a rare occurrence) but it didn't matter. All 4 runs came on home runs thanks to only managing 4 at bats with RISP and although I went 2-4 in those situations, could not manage a single run that wasn't from a homer.

So I'm going to raise human solid hits by 1 and lower CPU contact by 1 and see how that goes. Actually I may leave CPU contact alone until I see how my offense does. 4 of the 5 teams I've played so far have been top tier teams and I did pitch well against the one bad team I faced. It's just incredibly frustrating when not only are you not scoring any runs but you're also giving up 6 runs a game on average which is what happened in that last series against the Phillies and also the first series against the Angels.

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE

Game #21 of the Season – Oakland A's @ Boston Red Sox

Pitching Matchup – Brett Anderson vs. Jon Lester

The A's knock Jon Lester around on their way to a 7-4 victory as they have come in to Fenway and taken the 1st two games of this series. The Red Sox will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow as they send Clay Buchholz to the mound against Jarrod Parker in the series finale

Dude - not to be a jerk.....but like others said.....it's not the game and it's not the sliders.....IT'S YOU

YOU NEED TO ADJUST THE SLIDERS

USE YOUR HEAD AND FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED TO TWEAK TO GET IT WHERE YOU NEED IT TO BE

How many outs were there when you were trying to score from 2nd? I've noticed with the way SCEA has baserunning set up this year, that you have to be really selective as to when you send runners. With fewer than two outs, the game forces you to think more "station to station". Take a more cautious approach with less than 2 outs and give yourself more opportunities to drive home runs with sac flies or hits from the next batters in the lineup.

No **** I need to adjust the sliders. That's my whole reason for posting in here was to get advice on which sliders to change because I really like the way the game plays with your sliders compared to others I've tried, I just need a little more offense.

And I'm so tired of the "you need to get better" crap. The whole entire point of sliders is to adjust the game to fit each person's abilities. I have to accept that after playing 100+ games this year and thousands of games in previous years that my ability level is what it is. I actually don't think I'm that bad at the game either. I am a patient hitter, yes I should take a couple more walks but those really come down to misreading a whole 1 or two pitches a game that would have been ball 4 but I put it in play or strike out chasing it or just foul it off and then don't see another ball in the at bat.

But either way, I never once said the problem was your sliders so no need to get all defensive and be a dick about it.

The first time was with no outs, so yea I probably should have been more conservative there. The 2nd time was with 2 outs, so he should have gotten a huge secondary lead and been at 3rd base almost before the ball even got to the outfield.

Yeah, a more conservative approach would have at least put you in a better position to score the first runner. Who was the 2nd runner, who was the batter, and what kind/how deep of a hit was the 2nd hit? If you absolutely laced the ball to the right fielder or it was a relatively shallow hit, then it's possible to get thrown out at the plate even with an average runner vs an average arm. But, you're right, ordinarily the runner should be scoring from 2nd there by getting a good secondary/jump when the ball hits the bat with 2 outs.
