    Re: Bacon's Fictional Roster

This roster continues to amaze me. I just finished a season with the Mariners playing every game. Had a blast but now I think that I'm going to pick a National League team and do a fantasy draft. Thanks Bacon for including the companion sheet.

Came across the Twins relief Knuckleballer. Yikes! Had never faced one before. Every time I think I've seen it with this roster, I come across another fun little wrinkle. Absolutely loving it. I think my final line for the inning he pitched was 3 K, and a HR on the only pitch I actually connected with.

I have a question, as this is my first time ever playing this franchise. Do the hot zones change over time, to be congruent with your actual play, or are they cemented in stone when you create a player? I love how some heavily rated players have a ton of blue, but I'm wondering if that'll adjust throughout the course of a season or multiple seasons. Thanks, as always!

The old adage "If its High let it Fly, If its Low let it go" works great with knuckleballers. When you get on base, RUN!

I believe they do change. I'll take a look and see if I can find some drastic changes.
BFR's future is still TBD, stay tuned for updates

And just like that, I face the Angels and get a SP as well! I had such a tough go at getting the thing timed up to make any decent contact, or any contact at all! Managed to scratch 2 solo HR, but only 4 total Hits, with 10 Ks to just 1 BB, and lost 6 - 2. But it was absolutely cool and fun.

Contact swing is a big help as well.

Hitting a rough stretch early in my fictional season. Lost 4 straight, I couldn’t hit water if I fell out of a boat and my bullpen ERA is in the stratosphere. All this right before a 7 game west coast road trip. Ahh the ebbs and flows of baseball.

I had a similar stretch the first month. It was a rough month. Had only two guys hitting anything. The rest of the lineup was sub .200. Lost a really good 2B to injury so defense took a lick too. Starting pitching was struggling terribly. Bullpen was keeping me afloat but was major fatigued. Appears I'm coming out of it now as things are leveling out.

Ok I have been playing this game since the inception and I always get trapped in franchise mode. I always like to pick the team that isnt too good and isnt too bad and has a cool stadium with cool uni's and stadium home run affects like fireworks etc....I use universal DH and favor NL teams...and also favor stolen bases .I am going to do it...I am going to use this roster. I know even though I am in uncharted waters I know once I do this I will most likely not go back. So what I am asking is this....with the above perimeters I usually look for who should I be? I usually try to keep mlb rosters real life as possible so I am not versed in trades and budgets etc....but with no loyalty to anyone on any I could use some help in set up too......I appreciate any feedback

Off-the-cuff, the Giants may be a possible choice. They have some nice alt jersies (IMO - and that is highly subjective) and a beautiful park. They are probably the 3rd best team in the division behind Colorado and LA, but they are by no means awful (I can easily see that team winning).

even though Bacon has them 1 overall?

Overalls don't guarantee a good result. In my franchise the Mariners were 4th and were near the bottom of the league. The Red Sox are 29th I believe and the won the east by some crazy margin.

My franchise has a totally opposite set of outcomes with those two teams. Heck, the "rebuilding" D-backs are battling for first place in my franchise.

                              ...and THAT is the point....

There is SO much balance in the roster....darn near anything can happen.

I'd personally throw OVRs (and especially team OVR rankings) out the window with this roster. Pick a team that looks fun and dive in from there. Clean screen, every pitch, every game...it's bliss.

This notion brings up another beautiful thing about this roster. Frequently I look at players and their individual ratings, as well as performance, and wonder "Why is this player rated so high/low?" Lots of guys have high Overalls and I find them to not be particularly useful at all. Sometimes it's just one major flaw that I can't get past (I've often wondered what type of defender Mayfield on Oakland would be if you threw him out there at 1B), but other times, I wonder what the allure in the player is at all. Same goes the other way, with guys who are rated much lower overall, but I simply love to use, or just like the way their individualized ratings are situated, better to suit the way I play, or what I need. I absolutely never, ever put this much thought or depth into players with MLB rosters.

You look at some guys with, I guess we'll call similar hitting profiles and ratings (from memory; forgive me if I'm misremembering here): JC Ray (Atl), Gregorio Ortiz (Pit), and the Rockies CF who's name escapes me at the moment (Miguel something?). These guys are all very high contact vs both LHP and RHP, and low power guys, but if you play with them all, they're all like night a day, for me at least. Then you've got some platoon mashers who simply don't mash the way their ratings say they should, or guys like Junior Gonzalez who seems to hit well above his ratings. I should've listened to Josh months ago and dove deep into this roster. The amount of fun is simply awesome.

From the Franchise perspective, too, you'll see that there's some awesome players whose contracts simply make them so undesirable or unmanageable, that you're forced into tough decisions. The Marlins 1B is one of the best mashers in the entire league, but he's in his early 30s (maybe he's only 30, I can't remember exactly) and his contract takes him into his late 30s at a high price tag, which makes him a tough sell potentially. I believe the Giants are a team that has some contracts like this as well, with some of their better players.
