Made a few moves during the All-Star break to try and help the team. I had forgot to mention that I also lost Brad Miller for the season a few games prior. He had been playing well off the bench.
I traded Vince Velasquez to the Indians for Danny Salazar. Salazar is in the final year of his deal and had been the long-man for them. He will slide right into my rotation and pitch the second game out of the break after Dallas Keuchel. The Indians are taking on less salary now with Velasquez at $2.2MM compared to the $4.5MM that Salazar is making. They also get a few years of control over him. Vince needed a change of scenery. He does in real life too.
I also made a move to bolster the bench by acquiring Neil Walker from the Marlins for relief pitcher Yacksel Rios. The Marlins get out from his $2.0MM contract now and get a controllable reliever. Walker will take Brad Miller's spot on the bench and get some starts here and there when guys need some rest. He will be a free agent after the season as well.
I recalled Nick Pivetta from Triple-A and he will get the start in the 4th game out of the break. This will be his last chance to prove something for sure. We will need a 5th starter in a few days as well and we will recall top pitching prospect Adonis Medina from Triple-A to make that start. He is 22 years old with a record of 3-2, 3.08 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.
We are still in the market for another starting pitcher before the trade deadline and have our eye on a few pitchers. Hopefully Aaron Nola will only be out 1 month and not 2.
