Re: Trying To Understand The Appeal Towards ASB...

Well arguing ASB with Baseball Guru is insane mostly because his bling love for the game.

ASB and WSB were mediocre. As for the statement about watching baseball games, that doesn't make anyone an expert on the game. I've watched a lot of football in my day but the Cowboys aren't knocking on my door to come coach the team.

HH loses a lot of favor in a many eyes because it's graphics and lack of features. But on the field it does give the most realistic play out there. Now some will say the diffiulty is easy, and your example of taking the Rockies to the WS. That arugment is pretty weak considering the fact, i can say it about every other baseball made except text based games. In fact every sports game out this past year had that feature to an extent. Play Madden, NHL 2k3 or NCAA 2003 and you could take some middle of the road teams to greatness.

    Anyway to each his own...

Well, I'm not arguing with Guru...just a friendly debate. I respect his love of ASB now that he's made intelligent statements to back it up. I do have to say...High Heat simplistic - wow. I have to disagree (but we do that alot ). I played 7 years in the minors and I got into High Heat right after I "retired" and it had me hooked. I was a catcher and calling games in High Heat is so much fun. I love setting hitters up and putting them away. I don't know if High Heat on the PS2 played differently but the PC version is just incredible...ugly but incredible. I can see some people getting turned off by the graphics and animations. Every year 3DO thinks they updated their graphics and it looks like they are still 2-3 years behind the standard. Me - I love the gameplay and thats what keeps me coming back. That and the High Heat PC community is awesome. There are so many utilities for the game that edit players, stadiums, uniforms, rosters, bats, batting gloves, shoes, etc. It should be interesting to see All Star on the PC this year. maybe there will be a way to edit all of the things I mentioned above. We should all be happy this year.

JRod, you've mentioned in 2 posts that WSB was mediocre, you have yet to say why, as you only talked about ASB. Last year's WSB was awesome, the past editions on DC weren't so hot, but WSB was the best baseball game I've ever played.

Re: Trying To Understand The Appeal Towards ASB...

JRod, you pick 2 or 3 words from each statement I make and base your arguement around them without seeing the bigger picture of what it is I'm saying.... I never said watching baseball games makes you an expert on baseball.... I say that I can see which game of baseball is more realistic based on what I see in real life compared to what I see on my TV. Sure, both games have their share of messed up animations, but I have a hard time finding one animation, one pitch flight in HH that closely resembles anything seen in real life. People don't move like that, and 92 mph fastballs don't take a second and a half to get to the plate.

As for the Rockies making it to the World Series... that wasn't me playing, that was a fully simmed season. I know I could take the Rockies to the World Series if I played every game, but the computer should never have allowed that to happen based on the results of the previous year and the rosters that were present at the time. Sure, nobody would have figured Anaheim for World Series champs this year, but they weren't picked dead last by every respectable baseball person under the sun either. The Rockies in the HH world series = a bad sim engine. So much for realism, eh?

actually guru, Ichiro does take a power swing at a hanging breaking ball. Although most of his hits are doubles or triples.

Re: Trying To Understand The Appeal Towards ASB...

Not every time, he doesn't... Ichiro is exactly what I was talking about when it comes to situational hitters. He'll slap the ball the other way if it would benefit his team more, rather than going for the possible home run while risking a useless fly ball out. 8 of his 208 hits this past season were homeruns... surely he had more than 8 hanging breaking balls to hit all year.

BG...if you bump up the pitch speed sliders up to 7 or 8...they hardly take a second and a half to reach the plate.

in fact...the pitch breaks in HH(sliders, cb's, ch)are in fact realistic....add in the cut fastball for some pitchers.

That was a rhetorical question... there is more involved. Foot placement, angle of the hips, position of the hands... the cursor may not be perfect, but at least it gives the user the ability to hit according to the situation, which many major league batters do on a daily basis.

                <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

well...hitting the ball to the opposite field only involves letting the ball travel deep in the zone and keeping your hands inside the baseball......hip angle has nothing to do with it....throwing the hips open(called- backside hip rotation) provides power for the swing(bat speed) as long as the weight stays even and doesn't get over the front foot.

                teaching.............still fun

I'm not going to start a whole new debate with Guru. Let's just say it's not worth it, and getting Guru's heartrate up just increases his case of making some really flaming posts.

Anyway go read my review of it...

Don't have the link but it's under the baseball reviews.

I've read your reviews.... and let's just say I didn't vote for you as OS Reviewer of the Year. You make good points... to yourself. Your opinion means little to me.

I am not writing reviews, so it's ok if I am biased. JRod does write reviews for OS, so he should be the one without the bias... nothing like a reviewer who's already written off half the games that cross his journalistic path.

Say what you will about Guru (and I often do) but if he and Cookusu actually did a double take on HH or ASB it would be the most read review in the history of OS.

I was being kinda serious. I think would be a very interesting read to have both of you team together on each game.
