I'll tell ya...the last few weeks I've been visiting this baseball forum, I have been seeing alot of negativity toward ASB or just lack of respect for the game and I am amazed at it. I havent played the game since last year so I almost started following the sheep here too until I decided to pop the game in for a quick taste of baseball before I hit the streets in the next few days to find my game of 2004. Man, after just 5 innings of my first game back, It all came back to me why this game was heads and shoulders my favorite game over WSB and HH last year. The game always suprises you with uncertainty and things you dont always see. In the 3rd inning I struck out a batter and the ball got by my catcher so the batter took off to first. In an attempt to chase down the ball quickly, my catcher picked up the ball and made an off balance throw in stride against his momentum and threw the ball in the dirt and away from the first basemen which allowed the struck out batter to go down to second!...I was like...damn, I dont remember seeing that all of last year! This game still has surprises. In the 4th my catcher made a hard slide into second attempting to stretch a single into a double and got injured on the close play at second....I was lovin this!
Also, the momentum and confidence your pitcher attains as he successfully retires batters is brilliant, you actually can really make it easier for yourself if you stick with the hot/cold zones and work the batters constantly keepin them off balance and fooling them with mixed location and an occassional pitch they havent seen in a while. There are just so many subtle things that the true baseball fan can appreciate about ASB that make this game so enjoyable. Sure, like I said plenty of times last year...there's still alot of glitchy things and annoyances this game has but there is also a much deeper attention to the game that these developers really have incorporated to make each game a unique experience of 'anything can happen at anytime' that seperates it from the other games. I wont argue that HH pretty much played the most fundamentally correct game of baseball but it never seemed to stray from its politically correct gameplay and World Series had no rhyme or reason behind any of its results....There was no layer of depth to its shallow gameplay. Setting up batters and trying to guess a pitcher's next move was a mute point because it all felt like random uncalculated circumstance glossed over with a constantly slick highlight reel gameplay that made guys like Mo Vaun seem like acrobatic gold glovers
Sorry to spout....Hopefully this year, they are all great games so we can all be winners. Hopefully, each of the companies took bits an peices from every game and realized what indeed makes for an exciting yet realisitic interpretation of the sport!
