Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
still haven't picked up 2k12 tho it was preordered [the new TBP swung me to the Show], but I hope to soon.
Can't get enough baseball.
I just wish these games could just combine.
If we could combine 2k's commentary, stat tracking, inside edge, overlays, franchise mode features like numerical ratings, better player cards, rehab assignments, team pages with headlines, and stadium lighting [yes i like the lighting better in 2k. the way it bounces off the stadium in dusk games is sick] along with the Shows unparalleled graphics, realistic near perfect gameplay and overall customization, we would have the best baseball game ever.
Well for me anyways.
Some might like each game the way it is.Last edited by econoodle; 03-20-2012, 01:38 PM.Comment

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
there are rehab assignments in 2k?
man i cant wait to start my franchiseComment

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
Yes. They had it last year, but it didn't work too well (players stayed). However, I heard this was fixed this year. Rehab assignments are a huge part of baseball and affects overall strategy (e.g. roster moves, inning limits, strict pitch counts, etc). 2k also has chronic injuries which also works much better this year from what I hear. The show lacks in this area big time.Angels= 2025 World Series Champions!!Comment

nice.
i forgot about chronic injuries, pitch counts/inning limits as well.
nice additions for a franchise head like me.
its funny, the Show has always been my number one choice, tho i keep having to shelf it after a few months due to it getting stale and boring. This year remains to be seen, so far so fun. Then, I end up going to 2k which to me does two of the things really well that are hugely important to my enjoyment of a baseball game...
franchise mode
stats/commentary/tv style overlays
but I still cant let go of the Show and its always the first one I buy. Gameplay, graphics and overall realism.
The Show is still behind on franchise mode, tho many may disagree.
The things that the Show has that 2k doesn't aren't as important to me as the things 2k has that the Show doesn't .
Plus baseball is too long of a season for me to commit to a franchise in both, and i don't do any other modes.
but i still try.

In the show, I absolutely hate stat tracking (pretty much non-existent IMO). I also can't get passed minor league stats. The league leader in dingers is always like 18-20 tops for Triple-A and even lower for Double-A guys.
Heck, I still play MVP 05 (full minors also) because of owner mode. I just pulled up the career stats of one of my guys:
Year 1-Single-A: .333 average--30 bombs--99 RBI's--12 SB--88 K's
Year 2-Single-A/Double A: .288---27---71---10---77
Year 3-Triple A: .261---22---81---7---90
He is Chris Marrero. The card shows year, team, hits, average, at-bats, etc. I mean, he has hit 79 career bombs in the minors with 251 Ribbies.

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
The Show is the king by a big margin.....but hopefully someday SCEA will be able to emulate 2K's MLB Today mode, Commentary, and smooth Online play, as well as a few other little things here and there.
2K has done some things nicely, and having more than one developer making innovations is good for the progression of baseball video games in general.Comment

Going with 2k this year as a PS3 owner and not looking back. Love my player mode. Can't wait to start a franchise.

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
I've ended up abandoning the Show for now. Maybe the OSFM will get me back, but I'm going to do a 2k franchise for a while. I look back at the old (next gen) baseball games I have played; 2k7, 2k8, the show 09, the show 10 and 2k11 and I have by miles had much more fun playing the 2k series than the show series.Comment

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
I couldn't agree more. Even though celtics 6 picked The Show, I'm totally on board with everything that he said about 2K12 as well.
Visually, The Show is incredible. The animations I think are the best in any sports game, and the whole atmosphere is fantastic. As is the new broadcast presentation, I love it. But they have to change some things. I know that The Show has an established brand in how it looks and feels, and I don't know what they can do to freshen things up. But I've been playing it for the past 5 years, and as amazing as '12 is, it feels stale.
I know that The Show has made improvements this year - the ball physics, for example, are amazing. But Diamond Dynasty doesn't interest me. And even though they've added a new pitching mechanic, I found myself going back to the meter - I like it better, but again, it's getting tired. And, of course, the one thing that The Show desperately needs to overhaul is the commentary. I really like the broadcasters themselves, but they really disengage me by talking about last year all of the time.
Which brings me to why I think 2K12 is so great - of course, the leading aspect for me is the commentary. gametrailers.com said that the excellent commentary was wasted on the actual game of 2K12, but I don't think that's fair. 2k does play a really FUN game of baseball, and I think it's also a realistic one, regardless of what some are saying here in comparison to The Show. Does 2K still have it's problems? Sure (the 'zombie' glitch, fielders sometimes going in the wrong location, shoddy base running) but none of those are real 'game breakers'. But what really seals it for me is MLB Today - one of the best features to be in a sports game EVER, imo. While many people say that The Show is realistic (it is), 2K is realistic not only for it's representation of the sport, but because I feel connected to the real world - something that The Show fails to do.
I've been going back and forth the past few days still playing both, but the show is near perfect this year. I still think having 2 developers is good though because 2k still does some nice things. I just think the show has actually added most of those things at this point minus some of the stat utilization and online play and some franchise little things. The controls and presentation is negligable at this point. I think the show's presentation si actually miles better at this point because it's combined with those great graphics and just smooth animations. 2k really lags because of thsoe dead stares and just out of place animations. I still cant get over the deadness when you hit a hr and how silly the reactions are. The shows commentary has also improved and is actually really good.
2k still does have a bit more randomness in its gameplay. Im still struggling a bit finding the perfect sliders for the show but really enjoying it. I hear what people say about there being no contest. GRaphically and as far as immersion the show is really far and away superior.
I still think 2k is a very good game and they arent that different. Any other year people would be saying 2k is so fun and an instant classic. It's a very fun game even still. I've gone back and forth this entire gen and this long for a reason. It's made it worth it to me. But 2k still has that unfinished wonkyness that just makes it 2nd fiddle.
I still stand by my statement that sports games need more competition and innovation. There are so many different takes on the sport that could be done. EA is all alone in football and hockey and soccer is the worst at just releasing the same stuff every year. maybe a little better graphics or physics or presentation each year but I think EA is the worst when it comes to this stuff. 2k's games actually can be innovative especially when it comes to control and little features, but they are always buggy and unfinished.
It also goes to show what the ps3 can do when people put their resources into utilizing it. It's no different then the baseball games really. I'd hate to be stuck with just microsoft and dated hardware. The 360 is a fairly beefy cpu with a good graphics chip and a good amount of bandwith. But the cell and blu-ray even with low bandwith and a lesser gpu is hard at work. It just goes to show you what a different design can do. The show might not even have the same textures as some of these other sports games but there is so much going on underneath it doesnt matter. Most of these developers end up developing for the 360 and porting over and the ps3 struggles sometimes but when games are made for the ps3 they are ridiculous. Unfortunately the ps3 is last in sales and money rules and this is where ms gets you.
I think the Show is just that much better than everything else. The ps3 is also showing why they said the 360 is not a true next gen console. If you watch how the game animates. How fluid the overlays and presentation is. How fluid and accurate and responsive and fast the controls are. Everything. It's also polished. There is none of that crap. Not that these other developers are bad. It's just the show is on another planet.
My only issue is I wish there were more polished games like it, that work right and are utilizing the correct hardware that do different things. I don't know if that will ever happen because we seem to be going the other direction and cutting out the competition. There's always going to be some standard, but these games have been slow getting to the point that allows for variety. It's been more about milking a franchise for a lot fo these developers and fixing a bug here and there vs getting to that point where it's polished and doing other things.Last edited by celtics6; 03-21-2012, 08:19 PM.Comment

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
You and I are alike haha. I always buy the show, but for some odd reason, get drawn into 2k for the same reasons. For me, its all about stats, stats, stats and commentary (love those 3 guys). Now, I will be the first to say that the show does things much better than 2k on a larger scale (gameplay, graphics, attention to detail, etc.) but some things are missing.

He is Chris Marrero. The card shows year, team, hits, average, at-bats, etc. I mean, he has hit 79 career bombs in the minors with 251 Ribbies.
The show needs to implement something like this.
stat tracking is hugely important to me.
That's what draws me back in each time to 2k.
Inside Edge is essential to me.
This year It looks like I will be using the Show with Manage Only Mode [a first!] since it plays out so nicely and is great to look at.Comment

Re: My thoughts on the two baseball games
Another thing I like about 2k and would be nice if I got to this point with the Show** is I can hit without any silly little gimmicks. I have nothing on the screen when I hit, just my batter and the pitcher. There is no strike zone, no batters eye, no button pressing to tell the cpu what I think they are throwing.
The pitch leaves the pitchers hand and it's up to me to determine it's trajectory* if it's a fastball or off speed. Then my eyes have to stay on the ball for me to decide if I swing or not. That makes me feel more in control of my at bats.
*It'd be nice if the sinker didn't look like a curve than accelerate to the plate though
**I know you can hit like this on the Show, but I can't. I suck.Comment
