    Re: After playing MVP........................

I've played about 12 games of MVP including minor league so far - and managed about that many - and I'm pretty impressed. It's obvious (and admirable) what EA was going for, and they seem to have succeeded for the most part. Like Ed and others, I've seen a lot of quirky stuff and rough edges that none of the reviews (that I read) mentioned. But it's not "gamekillers" or anything. There are tons of great things about the game as well.

Overall, though, I just don't think the meters are for me. It just takes too much concentration on every pitch... especially for a new father.

The more I play, the more I'm looking forward to All Star. I really, really miss so many things about ASB. And my wife straight-up refuses to listen to the commentary for my games until I get ASB. It's gotten to the point that she'll actually leave the room if I don't have the sound turned off on MVP.

Damn that EA marketing machine. Once again they sucked me in and again I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. MVP '04 is given more hype than it's worth. Good animations, good effort but I can look past all the glitz and glamour to see that deep down this game is not the best representation of baseball around. Fool me once, fool me twice.

                  Re: After playing MVP........................

I've played a few more games this weekend and I like the game. The pitching aspect of the game is great. There's a sense of accomplishment during the times when you can work the corners, and it's even better when you catch the CPU on a strike 3 looking.

The hitting is fun to an extent, but I don't get that rush like I do with ASB. In ASB, when you got a HR off a hanging curve, it just felt good. I think the only aspect of hitting in MVP that you have to get down is the speed of pitches. Once you get that down, it's a pretty bland hitting game. This game has a stiff strikezone. Anything in the "box" is a strike. A variable strike zone would be nice. Also the lack of walks on both sides is annoying. Out of the 15 or so games I've played I have drawn 2 walks and given up 1 or 2 walks myself. In ASB04 I could sometimes draw 5 or 6 per game. I still love the hitting part of the game in ASB and I'd rate MVP a few notches above what I thought to be a poor, poor hitting game in WSB.

                        A couple of other points.

I don't really think the batting system works all that well. Other than pushing the stick up when I jack a few homeruns, it doesn't seem to work much on groundballs. I've gotten a good variety of hits, but there are a tad too many pop fouls.

The animations are really nice but they really, really hurt double plays in some cases. Twice in the same game today I blew double plays due to animation glitches. I shifted my infield to double play depth and got perfect ground balls to my second baseman behind the bag. As soon as I fielded the ball I pushed the throw button and the fielder got hung standing still for a second and then went into the underhanded toss animation. Even though I had the throw meter pegged in the red, he threw a soft toss to the bag which the runner beat and of course was way too late to relay to first.

All in all it is a fun game but it is FAR from perfect. It's a shame that games like this are so highly touted and glaring problems are not even mentioned by reviewers simply because EA is stamped on the front. In the case of ASB, it seems like people go out of their way to find any problem at all so they can blast away.

See this is all a matter of preference. As I posted earlier I hated the ASB batting interfaces last year. The batting interface for ASB is what lead me to ultimitely stop playing the game mid season the last 2 years, and pick another title.
