I honestly found the most realism in using 1-0 counts. I can still draw walks while pitching and batting. The pitch counts still seem realistic (anywhere between 75 - 100 pitches through 6 innings -- it depends on how good or bad the pitcher is doing). It also gives me 3 strikes which allows me to better work the pitcher. With any count that has a strike or two on it already, it gives me less of an opportunity to find the right pitch that I want to hit.

Re: Smart Counts
what level do you guys play at were you see a decent number of walks by the CPU? Part of the problem is me swinging at everything, but its because everything looks like a strike
Roger clemens pitched a complete game, striking out 12. It was uglyComment

Re: Smart Counts
Bacardi, I've been playing on Hall Of Fame, default, and on a good day, I can get a few walks. The nice thing will HOF is that it shows you the strike zone, so you have a feeling of where the pitch is. Personally, seeing the strike zone really helps in staying away from bad pitches. Don't get me wrong, I'll still chase and strike out, but it makes me a bit more patient. When I get better, I'll probably take the strike zone out, but for now, it helps in getting a walk or two.
As for smart counts...
I've been a proponent of them, but the past couple games I've played with them, I feel the same as the above player in that it ruins the tension of the running game, and screws over any bunting situations. It also will give you really low pitch-strike ratios which is not realistic.
In all honesty, the more I play, the more I like it with no random pitch counts or predetermined pitch counts (1-0.1-1.etc). I love the pacing in the game, and the tension that is built by starting each batter off with a clean slate.
And I still think that the ASB programmers programmed the fatigue to work best with the pitch counts we usually see without using the generated count option. Just work the counts, and you can get pitchers to tire out, and when you are pitching, don't be afraid to try to get the batters to chase.
Although I must say that the 1-0 count intrigues me. I was trying with a 1-1 generated count, but didn't really like it. So that may be another solution.
Anyway, glad to get some PS2 people to share in the conversationsComment

Re: Smart Counts
Maybe a couple of us could try the 1-0 count as mentioned above and some others could go back to no count at all. I may try both. I would like to see 4-5 pitch at bats.
Here's an interesting point that I would not have imagined. I was watching an MLB game and a particular hitter was up to bat and the announcers said that he was one of the most patient hitters in baseball. He averaged 4.2 pitches per at bat and that ranked 5th in the Majors. So, while there are times when walks seem abundant, like the Red Sox 2 nights ago and the Braves last night, it seems like we really can't realistically expect more than what occurs in the bigs.
I think I'd be satisfird to walk 2-3 times per game.Comment

Re: Smart Counts
I'm starting to not like Smart Counts anymore. My pitchers get tired WAY too soon. When I wasn't using them, I threw a 3-hitter with Tim Hudson, but all of my other starters get tired after 3 innings work. I got beat 15-3 my last game, against the Mariners. -Jay Illestrate, Emcee/Producer/Graphic Artist
