I'm a PC gamer as well as a console gamer, and I've seen games go through six or more patches before the next pay-version of a title hits the shelves, and PC games typically cost $10-20 dollars less than console titles!

With the existence of online services for both the 360 and the PS3, I don't think they have any really legit excuse for stiffing us on a patch. That's not to say they won't stiff on us a patch...odds are they will; I still have the right to consider it distasteful, however.
I agree to a certain extent; however, we don't know how long it takes to patch a game. It could take a week, month, a few months, etcc.... before it hits MS certification for 2 weeks.

Unless a game is severely broken, I would rather see the producers put their full energies into next years offering. If they worked a patch for the current game, it would cut into the development of next years game.

    Just my thoughts.

      Re: patch coming?

Big fixes to physics, like the more foul balls, collisions, etc are not going to be coming in a patch. That is obvious. Even the much maligned franchise AI is probabbly to big a issue to tackle for a patch. They could try tweaking the values the AI uses to build its lineups, but there is no guarantee they would not break something else in the process, and they are not going to rebuild the AI in a couple of months.

However, a couple of the smaller, but still prominent issues, in particular the ERA/BB scoring could and should be patched. Most of the people on this forum could probably whip up a spreadshee to calculate ERA accurately; we are not talking a high level of programming here. Assuming they remembered where they put the scoring code , tweaking a few lines or changing some numbers should be all that is necessary.

I will be very bugged if 2K wastes time on something like the "Bigs" without releasing a fix for something as simple as the ERA/BB bug.

He does have a valid point though. PC games get patched on a regular basis, especially RPG's and Strategic games which seem to be patched a few times before their next effort. Yes, MS certification takes two weeks, but we're all not going to just step away from 2K7 and wait for their next effort.

Yes, but the vast majority of PC gamers are online. The same can't be said about console gamers.

Also, there are usually different teams that work on patches and expansions for PC games. I don't think console game developers really have that luxury.

Keep in mind that I am all for console developers putting more patches out there, but I just don't see it happening. Oh, and I remember reading or seeing an interview a couple years back about how MS discourages console game developers from putting out patches. MS feels that if console game developers get in the habit of patching games, then they won't be as pressed to release a complete and finished product out of the box. I've seen many a PC games released early with tons of bugs in them and sure, yeah, a patch comes out some weeks or a month later, but other times (like Medieval Total War II for example), you sit around for months and months and months on end just waiting for a patch to make the game play decently. So I kind of hear what MS is saying, but at the same time console game developers should acknowledge when their games have bugs/glitches in them and make a reasonable attempt to fix what they can.

That's what I was trying to say, but you said it better.

I used to be a PC sports gamer and HH, Madden and MVP would be patched on a consistent basis. Most of the issues were gameplay issues. The DB's in Madden, the bug in Wrigley for HH, the LH bug and the stuttering in MVP, etc.....

I don't see as many patches for the games I have on console vs PC.
