Update on my Orioles franchise (Year 3):
As I said in my last post, the Orioles were dangerously close to collapse. However, Baltimore's prayers were answered and the O's won the division by 3 games over the Yankees (who, ironically were in last place for most of the season). Still, they were the worst division winner in baseball at just 88 wins so I knew it would be an uphill battle in the playoffs. Series were as follows:
NLDS
Cincinatti Reds (WC) vs Philadelphia Phillies (East)
Milwaukee Brewers (Central) vs Los Angeles Doders (West)
ALDS
Texas Rangers (West) vs Cleveland Indians (WC - won a 1 game playoff against the Angels)
Baltimore Orioles (East) vs Chicago White Sox (Central)
I swept the White Sox, who were surprisingly offenseively inept against my starting pitching. The Rangers won in 4, the Reds in 5, and the Dodgers in 4, so the the matchups are as follows:
NLCS
Cincinatti Reds vs Los Angeles Dodgers
ALCS
Texas Rangers vs Baltimore Orioles
I'm already up one game in my series and the NLCS hasn't started yet. So far, the biggest surprise has been Vlad Guerrero who has turned on the power in the playoffs. After finishing with 18 HRs on the year, he has hit 3 in 4 games in the playoffs. Another pleasant surprise was Adam Jones who hit over .500 in the ALDS.
Shawn Hill, last years AL Cy Young winner, is back on my MLB roster after a 4 month injury with a broken elbow (ouch). His ratings have taken a hit in the meantime so he's my emergency long relief, which hopefully won't be needed in the playoffs.
One interesting item of note is that I still do not have closer; It's basically closer by committee when it comes to the 9th. It's definitely unusual for a team to have this level of success with that type of situation, but the one saving grace has been my powerful offense which usually has the game in hand in the later innings. It is clear, though, that I will need to address the bullpen in the offseason as I do not have any "shutdown" guys in there.
