I agree with you here. Joe Buck is a pretty good PBP guy the only thing I dislike about him is his smugness and holier then thou attitude. I don't know if his father was like that because he was always very professional in the way that he called games. I wish Joe would take some cues from his pop but then ppl would say that he's become boring. Tim McCarver has really lost his grasp on the game. It's hard to believe he was a pretty good announcer back in the 80s and early 90s.

I don't really get that from Joe Buck, I can see how some people would though. He just seems like somebody you could joke around with, a total sarcastic smart ***.

I'm usually pretty sarcastic so that's probably why I don't take offense to him.

Now McCarver is a complete ******, hopefully a splintered bat will end his commentary career....soon.

I enjoy listening to Jon Miller on the ESPN broadcasts; his home run calls are superb. Joe Morgan's self-aggrandizing really grates on me, but his analysis seems to be top notch. If he had better facts at his disposal ("Billy Beane wrote Moneyball"), I'd think he's even better.
McCarver is a complete idiot for sure, but Joe Morgan...ehhhh. His analysis consists of repeating obvious facts and mumbling about how playing second base back in his day somehow equipped him to be a color man... Example: "The Giants are down by 1 in the 9th so Barry Bonds is looking to hit a home run here." Nooooo, reeeaaally!! Old school knowledge and likeability in the league does not mean you know what you're talking about. If you struggle to explain why you would put on a slugger because a base is open, or make errors explaining other obvious situations, chances are you're in the wrong profession. It's not just knowing Michael Lewis was the author of a great book.

You're probably right re: Morgan, but I notice whenever I catch Sunday Night Baseball, he does a great job explaining the mechanics of hitting. He does it in a way that I find credible, and also fascinating at the same time. I agree he is a master of stating the obvious. I guess he brings something else to the table for me personally, because I love it when announers get into technical parts of the game, and stay away from: "Mike Piazza denied he was gay to the papers yesterday".

That said, I'm willing to bet Morgan will only get worse as time goes on, a la McCarver, who is truly out of touch with today's game.

Haha, that's the spirit! Joe Morgan is definitely credible and clearly loves being around the game...it's just that I don't agree with him a lot of times. When you're Captain Obvious and can't look at things the way GMs and managers think today, you're just getting in John Miller's way. Also, I think he talks more than any other color man in the biz, which if you have nothing new or insightful to add....shut up!

I was suprised earlier this season during a A's/Giants game when Morgan actually had some kind words for Billy Beane. Everysince Moneyball came out for some reason he's had a grudge against him. And of course I'm hoping by now he knows Billy Beane didn't write Moneyball and Moneyball doesn't = drawing walks.

Funny thing is, most Moneyball adherents consider Morgan one of the most underrated players in history. I didn't realize his career OBP was so high (.392).

Dunae Kuiper and Mike Krukow are good too.

I think the worst color-commentary man has to be Rex Hudler.

Joe Morgan tonight after Andruw Jones gets 2 strikes on him in the 8th:

"See, he cut down his swing, that was an upper body swing, a no lower body swing."

I've heard of cutting down your swing with 2 strikes, but when you hit a gapper to left center that one hops the wall, I'm pretty sure you need to use your legs Joe. He can take a valid theory like swinging for contact and less for power with 2 strikes and totally eliminate the lower body in the equation....just by being Joe Morgan. In the replay, Jones's hips come flying around too so he can get his hands through the fastball. How was this guy a great ballplayer and this stupid in the booth???
