I think Bonds is a better outfielder than Pujols is a first-baseman. But, that's just me and my opinion, and this one is not because he is my favorite player. I merely defend him because he is my favorite player.

Originally posted by BlzerLike I said, that statement can be said for a lot of people, so when it comes up in my case, that's the automatic thought process when reading my posts. But take away that damn Giants logo and put a Yankees, Cubs, or A's logo on it (or trade Bonds to one of those teams). I still say the same thing because he is my favorite player, not because he is on my favorite team (and I honestly think they are only my favorite team because I live here. If I lived anywhere else, I think the Braves would be my favorite team).Comment

Re: ESPN and Bonds
[QUOTE=BGarrett7]Of course Conti is going to say that. He probably still has aspirations to become a dealer again, so he's not going to throw himself under the bus as easily as saying everything despiraging about himself in the book is true.
Do you really believe that. The guy just got out of Jail. He would be quiet, but instead he says that! I am not saying it means anything. I hope it does. But the truth is it will be hard to prove it either way!Comment

How is he a better OF's than Pujols is a 1b. How could you even pretend to make that distinction.
Why do I bother, arguing with a 16 yr old?Comment

Originally posted by BlzerI'm biased towards Bonds, but not because he's a Giant. You guys are always categorizing me as a "typical Giants homer". Wrong. I am a "typical Bonds homer". That's all. He's not my favorite player because he's on the Giants, and I am not defending him because he is a Giant. This is exactly why I posed that question to joeboo... because apparently your favorite team does not always seem to bring out your favorite player, and vice versa (see my situation with Sheffield and the Yankees).Comment

Re: ESPN and Bonds
I can see that you still do not understand, though I make perfect sense.
Let's make this clear right now: If Bonds was on the Yankees, Cubs, or A's, I would still defend him as I do now. If Alex Rodriguez were on the Giants, he would get less appraisal than joeboo would give Bonds if he were still on the Pirates. My favoritism toward a team will not effect my outlook on a player, but the inverse may be true to some extent (in that my favoritism toward a player may effect the outlook on a team).

Better?
That's something else that I don't understand... the age doesn't determine the quality of a person's arguments (or anything else). If that's the case, then by age you should be a better player? Why is Pujols better than so many 30 year olds? Why is he better than the 41-year-old Bonds? (at least, in your mind).
You argue with me because I make points that are worth debating, even if you can beat me in all points. I just don't back down because I enjoy debating, and because your statements will not change my beliefs on Bonds as a player or a person. I have them set in stone, and they will not change. I've heard all of you guys and your statements... I just want mine to be heard, and clearly understood without being ignored. I've already repeated many points in this thread because they have been overlooked.
Maybe that comes with age, though. Us youngins just don't get that respect yet, I suppose.
What I say and input should not come as a surprise anymore. Collectively, I've had at least 11,000 posts on OS (if that means anything). I never try and make a point without reasoning. If you still find them humorous, then I can explain them being ignored. If they're being ignored in the sense that you contradict my statements without directly replying to me, then I start to wonder.Last edited by Blzer; 04-03-2006, 10:54 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: ESPN and Bonds
Pujols is the top hitter in the game as far as I'm concerned. As comparisons with Bonds go, he is a plus defender (and could easily win a Gold Glove) and just a better, pure hitter. If he didn't have guys like Edmonds and Rolen hitting behind him there would be no way he'd get pitched to as often as he does. In 2003 and 2004, who was hitting behind Bonds? I honestly couldn't tell you, though I do know that Benito Santiago was hitting behind him in the 2002 playoffs. Plus Pujols is far more durable than Bonds. Even battling injuries to his plant foot last year he still hit .330/.430/.609 and went to the plate 700 times. I wouldn't include speed in Pujols' repertoire, but he is a better baserunner than Bonds is now and was only caught twice in 18 attempts last year (where as Bonds is practically imobile at this point in his career). And anyone can accuse anyone of using steroids, but Pujols has never been caught and has never even been suspected by anyone with an opinion that holds any credence, where as Bonds' steroid use has been well published.
There's no doubt in my mind who I want at the plate with the game on the line. Even as a Boston fan who has tremendous respect for the reputation created by David Ortiz in the clutch, I have to take Pujols. Pujols is just a different breed. He is never trying to hit homeruns it seems, just everything he hits is hard and on a line. I've never seen a hitter hit more line-drive homers than Pujols. As a hitter, I think he is comparable to Manny Ramirez in that they make it look effortless, but Pujols' ability to track the ball is beyond comparison to anyone at this point and his consistency is remarkable. It is almost an insult to call him a power hitter, because his ability to make contact is just so good (just 65 K's in 700 plate appearances last year, 52 in 692 in 2004). In 617 PA in 2004, Bonds struck out 41 times, but walked 232. If he was pitched to as consistently as Pujols, he'd likely strike out more than Pujols would.Comment
