I'm in a state of shock. I thought we had a slim chance to hang around if we got one more starting pitcher, but now I feel like we just torpedoed the whole season.

Bray and Majewski better magically turn into Rob Dibble and Randy Myers circa 1990 for this to just be an EVEN trade.

I hope Bowden at least took our front office to dinner and a movie first.

I thought the reds actually had a competent front office now.

      Guess I was wrong.

This was a good trade for the Reds. Kearns was an overrated hitter who struck out way too often. Lopez, I liked, and am disappointed he was traded. But to get Majewski, Bray, Clayton, Thompson and Harris in return was a steal. Kearns won't do anything in giant RFK. Majewski and Bray will be good relievers, and the Reds bullpen has already cost the team multiple games this year.

Not only do you think that the deal was better for the Reds, you think it was a STEAL?

          You have to be kidding.

As I have said before, this deal downgrades the Reds at three positions, to improve the bullpen, only a little.

I am wondering how the contracts look though.

I actually dig the trade for the Reds. Kearns has been a hot and cold type of player, and Lopez is the same way. The problem is, Lopez's defense can be horrid at times. Wagner was done in the Cincy organization. The Reds pen is upgraded with Gary Majewski and Bill Bray. That's been our big concern all year, and along with the Eddie Guardado move, WE have pen depth now. Our offense will be fine. We've got enough bats to survive. Denorfia has been needing a spot for awhile, and he'll get it, and this may also get Ryan Freel more consistent playing time. We all know Harris, and he's a solid utility guy.Definitely not that bad of a deal for the Reds...
            and watch Denorfia folks

Tom Gordon is on the block, anyone see any suitors?

Heard that NY, Mil, and LA are all interested.

Heres a question...do you guys think the Rangers would trade Gary Matthews Jr., if/when they fall out of the race?

He is 32 years old, and is a FA at the end of the year. He is having a career season at the plate, made the All-Star game, and is a very underrated defensive player (well, until he made that catch).

I think he could be dealt. Yankees?

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas

I'm a Deads fan and at first, I was a bit ticked but I think it'll work out. The thing holding the Reds back was relief pitching. The bullpen was absolutely horrid and now we acquire two pretty good guys in the pen. Kearns was overrated much like Lopez. Kearns can't ever stay healthy and Lopez is the worst defensive SS in the league. Furthermore, he has Boras as an agent and he can walk either this year or next. Boras will overvalue him and he'll be priced out of the Reds liking.

Getting relief pitching for two everyday players is never going to look good on paper. It isn't sexy. However, this was needed for the Reds. It was a pure baseball move and the fans may not like i tbut in the long run, it might end up being a good thing.

Also I forgot to add that this trade was also done in part due to Chris Denorfia, an OF that has been in the Reds system. They feel he is ready to take over in the OF and at the leadoff spot.

If he goes to the Yankees and they put him anywhere but center, it'd be about as big a joke as Jeter staying at short when A-Rod was acquired. According to most anyone who knows how to rate fielders, Matthews is one of the very best defensive outfielders in baseball...even before he got noticed for producing this year.

Heard that the White Sox are in talks with the Giants for acquiring Jason Schmidt.

The deal would send Brandon McCarthy and Brian Anderson to SF for Schmidt. Then the ChiSox would deal for a CF (Griffey, Luis Matos, Taveras, Pierre, Brady Clark, Gary Mathews, etc), maybe by trading one of the SP to be bumped out of the rotation, (Garcia, Vazquez, Garland).

Probably a few donuts or something.

Just saw "Ponson to Yankees" on ESPNNews...give me a sec.

And...it just says "agree to deal"...did St. Louis release him or something?
