Re: Is Gary Sheffield done with NY?
I can see him trying to come back on September 1, but not having his stroke back. I think at that point, it will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him (shut him down, keep playing him). I don't think we will see a pre-injury Gary Sheffield hitting for the Yankees in 2006 though. This makes those lineup projections from yesterday a tad silly.Comment

I don't think that means his time in NY is over though. As much as a I dislike Buster Olney, I think he makes a valid point in saying that its cheaper for the Yankees to pick up Sheffield's option than gamble on a Carlos Lee or somebody else.Comment

Re: Is Gary Sheffield done with NY?
Originally posted by camulosI agree, and I think that's a big part of the reason they made the trade for Abreu.

Originally posted by camulosIt's cheaper because Sheffield will cost them $13 mil as opposed to $50+ mil for a guy like Lee or Soriano.
I understand what you mean, and yes I know the risk is less as it is only a one year deal, but I think they could spend that money someplace else.Comment

Re: Is Gary Sheffield done with NY?
Originally posted by Rob_NYYWhat are you talking about with Lee or Soriano? They have Matsui, Damon, Abreu for the OF next season.
Sheffield is done in New York after this year, but that was most likely true regardless if they made this trade or not.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

I think the Lieber example given by Olney is a good one. They didn't want to spend $8 mil for a year of Lieber so spent $40 mil on Pavano, which didn't work out too well.Comment
