Is Gary Sheffield done with NY?

His option for 2007 is worth $13 Million, and now they have Abreu. Sheff will be 38 this fall, and is coming of a big injury.

Someone might be able to sign him, somewhat cheap.

    Yeah he's finished.

Expect him to complain and moan about it vociferously to the NY media (if he holds up to form that is)

He is as good as done. No way he is back next year.

I can see him trying to come back on September 1, but not having his stroke back. I think at that point, it will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him (shut him down, keep playing him). I don't think we will see a pre-injury Gary Sheffield hitting for the Yankees in 2006 though. This makes those lineup projections from yesterday a tad silly.

Like Kenny Lofton and Reggie Sanders? Maybe.

I agree, and I think that's a big part of the reason they made the trade for Abreu.

I don't think that means his time in NY is over though. As much as a I dislike Buster Olney, I think he makes a valid point in saying that its cheaper for the Yankees to pick up Sheffield's option than gamble on a Carlos Lee or somebody else.

Cheaper than $13 million? On a player coming off a major injury who will be 38 years old?

It's cheaper because Sheffield will cost them $13 mil as opposed to $50+ mil for a guy like Lee or Soriano.

                    $13 mil for just 2007.

I understand what you mean, and yes I know the risk is less as it is only a one year deal, but I think they could spend that money someplace else.

What are you talking about with Lee or Soriano? They have Matsui, Damon, Abreu for the OF next season.

                        Exactly.

Sheffield is done in New York after this year, but that was most likely true regardless if they made this trade or not.

They're just examples of bats that will be on the market...

I think the Lieber example given by Olney is a good one. They didn't want to spend $8 mil for a year of Lieber so spent $40 mil on Pavano, which didn't work out too well.

They will probably spend that money on pitching.

He'll try to come back this year because he needs to look good in September if he wants to make any money next year. He won't be a Yankee next year though.
