Mariners GM Bill Bavasi confirmed Wednesday that the team won't be a part of the bidding war for Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. We disagree with the decision, but at least the Mariners are being up front about it, as opposed to the handful of teams that will throw in token bids and then say "well, we tried" to their fan base. The Mariners are still likely to pursue Jason Schmidt and Adam Eaton, among others.

Well, I guess he could refuse to sign with a team if he wanted to, because if he refuses to negotiate a contract after posting, he could just go to Japan and play there for another year then just become a free agent next season.

I highly doubt the mets are going to be able to outbid a team like the Yankees who are obviously going to be looking for pitching this offseason, especially since Mussina is a FA as well. The mets might have the "inside track" with the latin american players because of minaya and the rest of the latin american players on the roster, but the Yankees and Mariners have closer ties to Japan. I still think the Mets are going to end up with Zito instead.

dont get it twisted bro, we (the mets) have Yankee type spending money, we could outbid the yankess as could other teams, its just 9 times out of 10 we choose not to, if wilpons and minaya have it in their head that this guy will be a met, they have the money to make that happen.

I was listening to ESPN radio tonight, and they said this guy is the best FA pitcher out there... Better than Zito, Schmidt, better than anyone. Also said he's this good and hasn't even reached his prime. So I guess he's supposed to be kinda good LOL.

Bids due by 5 PM tomorrow. Should be very interesting. Pretty much down to the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox in my opinion.

Here are my quick odds on who wins the bid.

            Yankees - 75%
            Mets - 15%
            Red Sox - 10%

According to the ESPN radio report today, its between the Yankees and the Cubs. With Red Soxs, Rangers also making bids.

This would be a nice surprise, and it would show me they were serious when they said things would change. I can only imagine how much cash is in the Tribune Cubs piggy bank.

A guy on another message board is saying the Cubs offer is $21 Million. If that's true, the Yankees will win the bid.

I thought the bids were blind. Are they not?
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Yeah they are, but there is always speculation. Wasnt the bid the negotiate with Ichiro like $13 milliion?

FUKUOKA -- The talk on the field before tonight's Game 5 at the Yahoo! Dome is that the posting price for Daisuke Matsuzaka will be significantly below the early projections of $20-$30 million. Teams have until 5 p.m. Wednesday EST to submit their blind bids, with the anonymous winner to be turned over to the Seibu Lions, and it sounds like the number will be much closer to the Mariners' bid that won Ichiro Suzuki's negotiating rights -- $11 million -- back in 2000.

I don't really think that the bids will be that low. Even if they are, the Seibu Lions can reject the offer and keep Matsuzaka for another year.

Edit: I read that Bob Klapisch is reporting the Yankees' bid is $20 Million. If that's true and none of the other teams pursuing Matsuzaka bid anything higher, the Cubs might win. Assuming that their offer is really $21 Million, of course.

Ah the Cubbies, looking to end another great pitcher's career.

That is an absurd amount of money to pay to just have the rights to NEGOTIATE with the freakin' guy.
